mnemonics

This is the other way around, really: I remember the acronym for the Seven hills of Rome (which I just added to the official List of mnemonics) very well, but only about half of the hills' actual names. — Aaron M. Ucko 19:59, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

How about one for remembering the EM spectrum?:

Stalactites / Stalagmites

I've always remembered these because stalactites have to hold on tight. —midg3t 08:52, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Stereotype threat

Thanks for the smart edit! futurebird 01:07, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Glad you thought it was thoughtful! —mako (talkcontribs) 14:51, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

stalactites and stalagmites

An elementary school teacher of mine evoked insects crawling up your pants, and what you would do about it, with When the mites go up, the tights come down. --ESP 02:41, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

World, flesh, and devil

I think my main concern with the article is the possibility that there is a fundamental classical Christian source for the phrase that I'm completely ignorant of, so the article might be misleading if I didn't find it. So I think I should do a little more research. Schoen 19:36, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

vegetarian

perfect! go ahead and add that statement, as well as cite your source. this is, after all, an encyclopedia. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Borislutskovsky (talkcontribs) 20:32, 29 March 2007 (UTC).

help with categories

I found this in Wikipedia:Categorization and I thought of you. I hope this helps...

If you go to the article from the category, will it be obvious why the article was put in the category? Is the category subject prominently discussed in the article?

borislutskovsky 20:37, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Like I said earlier (look up), go ahead and put "Matt is a vegetarian", just cite your source. I'm not after Matt in particular (in fact, i'm kinda partial to him because i use Ubuntu at home), it's just that lots of categories have become polluted on wiki with random additions with no reference. I can just as easily update Matt's page and say "Matt is a happy carnivore," and it would hold just as much water as the other statement if i don't cite a source. borislutskovsky 21:59, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Alright

Im sorry for vandalizing vegetarianism. The reason I removed the talk page is because of the orange banner that says you have new messages and this computer is used not just by me. But ill keep it since it still shows the orange note even when i deleted the talk page and its kind of unwelcomed in Wikipedia to delete your own talk page.

Cool? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.36.134.13 (talkcontribs)

LoC

A quick note because you voted on this AfD ... I am sad that this decision led to the deletion of ALL the LoC schedule pages, and am considering reviewing. Isn't the world a better place when you can find out on Wikipedia that, for instance, CT 9960-9998 is for biographies of "Other miscellaneous groups (Including adventurers, eccentrics, misers, etc.)"? The AfD totally ignored that the schedules are only available online from the LoC in .pdf or .wpd (!) format -- a pain in more ways than one. -- phoebe/(talk) 21:20, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Anyway, they're back for now, but should probably be cleaned up in light of all this. -- phoebe/(talk) 07:52, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

Esolang

I am afraid that the Esolang wiki's license is not compatible with Wikipedia's GFDL, so moving content there must not be done. --Ørjan 12:12, 18 April 2007 (UTC) (posted to Esolang as well)

I should have checked more carefully. Thanks for the nice note. mako (talkcontribs) 15:11, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Jacksonian3623

I think that all since there is an actual organization that includes all of the colleges in the Hartford/Springfield area, it would make sense for the pages of the colleges and universities that are a part of the alliance to to contain some reference to it. Therefore I am going to add a blurb about the "Knowledge Corridor". However, I will form it as a sentence or two.

Notability of Howard Sutherland (attorney)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Howard Sutherland (attorney), by Awitelin (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Howard Sutherland (attorney) seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Howard Sutherland (attorney), please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 21:28, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Suggestions of plagarism and NPA

Hi Mako. Thanks for your message. I'm happy, of course, to defer to you on WikiPedia style. However there is no question that ITRW (a) quoting an article abstract as I did with a reference it is neither copyriht violation nor plagarism and (b) to accuse an author, by name, of copyight violation (which is in principle a criminal offence!) and plagarism is quite a serious personal attack. Creative Commons criticism

Hi mako. I added that tag because Creative Commons does now have a minimum required freedom for its licences (see here), so I think that should be mentioned. I'll make the changes myself if I get round to it. Guyjohnston 19:49, 17 June 2007 (UTC)

eleventiness

Thanks for the note -- I've copied a version of the eleventy pool into your userspace. See also discussion at Wikipedia talk:Pools; perhaps appropriate for a review. +sj + 00:34, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Copyleft

According to your last revert on Copyleft#History, I'm afraid that the non-techincal audience will not understand that "Lisp interpreter" is a computer program. --Ans 13:58, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

I guess I'm biased. I'll try to find a wording that works. Thanks for your message! mako (talkcontribs) 16:40, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
I've run this by a few people and have concluded that the link to the article on the Lisp programming language is going to be sufficient. mako (talkcontribs) 13:13, 22 June 2007 (UTC)
Where did you talk about this with those people? Please, let me know. And what if the article is printed on the hard copy? The link is still sufficient? --Ans 09:07, 30 July 2007 (UTC)
I just asked a few non-technical people what they thought. In any case, links exist to provide more information people unfamiliar with a term. It's fine if we use one here. That's what links are for. —mako 14:04, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
But when it is printed on a hard copy, the people will unable to access the link? --Ans 14:35, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Please help-Amharic language request

Hello! The Wikipedia:Graphic Lab is working on artwork related to Ethiopia, and we need some help to get the proper Amharic language text into the artwork. Please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Graphic_Lab/Images_to_improve#Ethiopia_Scout_Association and see if you can help! Thanking you in advance, Chris 07:23, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Egg Whites

Even if it is common knowledge with chefs such as myself, it is still not common knowledge to all chefs and not to the general public either. I am going away for the next two weeks, so if you can wait until then I will properly reference this section for you using On Food and Cooking from Harold McGhee or the CIA text book when I have a chance.--Christopher Tanner, CCC 21:38, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

AfD Nomination: Scott James Remnant

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, but all Wikipedia articles must meet our criteria for inclusion (see What Wikipedia is not and Deletion policy). Since it does not seem that Scott James Remnant meets these criteria, an editor has started a discussion about whether this article should be kept or deleted.

Your opinion on whether this article meets the inclusion criteria is welcome. Please contribute to the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Scott James Remnant. Don't forget to add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of each of your comments to sign them.

Discussions such as these usually last five days. In the meantime, you are free to edit the content of the article. Please do not remove the "articles for deletion" template (the box at the top). When the discussion has concluded, a neutral third party will consider all comments and decide whether or not to delete the article. -- mms 00:46, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the note! I'm happy we were able to resolve this to everyone's satisfaction. —mako 14:15, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

FSF's endorsement of Ututo

Dear Benjamin. I hope you are the right Wikipedian to ask for clarification in the debate wheather the FSF has ever endorsed the use of Ututo. Please answer on Talk:Ututo#FSF endorsement. Thanks in advance. --mms 17:01, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Great, I got an answer from Richard and responded there. Hopefully that settles it. Let me know if you need/want more. —mako 13:17, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Finally, some common sense!

Thank you for having some common sense on the Ubuntu article and the Criticism section. I think it's highly biased. I use Ubuntu as one of my primary operating systems and I have some criticism toward it. Thank you for having common sense and understanding that software isn't perfect. Peteturtle 12:04, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

Didn't mean to make you feel bad by adding a criticism section (since you're part of the Ubuntu dev team), but I'm glad you understand my point : ) I'm still a new editor, as you said. I like your idea of moving things slowly from the talk section. Peteturtle 14:16, 16 August 2007 (UTC)

University information

Hi I´m a college student from Mexico. I´m up to write something about the MIT. What I´m looking to is people who can tell me about the Student life there, and in your case the support the MIT gives to foreign students. It would be great if you could tell me about those things Thank you

Echg07 17:57, 19 September 2007 (UTC)echg07

I am not, nor have I ever been, a foreign student at MIT. If you have specific questions about MIT though, I would be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. —mako 04:37, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

photos of greatness

I still like that new photo. Please homophonize to your heart's content. It's probably worth setting up a site to store cool pages permanently... meta is probably a good stepping stone, but one devoted to permanence would be even better. Any ideas? +sj + 23:46, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Es5-screenshot.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Es5-screenshot.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 06:30, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

I believe I have addressed this issue completely and I've removed the template. —mako 17:39, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

oh well

It was worth a shot, anyway. Guess some people are just weightier than others. -- phoebe/(talk) 23:33, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Status of the GFDL

Hey Mako, you left a message on the listserv back in August saying that you were planning on pinging the FSF about the status of the new GFDL/GSFDL draft. I was wondering if you had uncovered any information yet. I emailed Brett Smith and he said I needed to ask RMS directly, so I emailed RMS last month but never got a reply. Believe it or not, your email to the listserv is the only communication from the FSF about the GFDL draft that I have seen in the past year. Surely there needs to be some sort of dialog about this. The Wikipedia community has a lot of feedback that they would like to discuss with the FSF before moving forward, but so far all of the communication has been one-way apparently :( Kaldari 16:48, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Google juice

I have nominated Google juice, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Google juice. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. h i s s p a c e r e s e a r c h 13:47, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
