Ways to construct sentences with >5 hads
I learned a sentence with 5 had's in English class. Here is an explanation:
There was a couple who could have no children. So they needed to find a woman willing to have a baby for them. They had had their child had.. One day they that child misbehaved and had had no breakfast. Thus:
The child the parents had had had had had no breakfast.
I know I saw someone do a 6-had sentence once, and it was without resorting to the use/mention thing, but I dont remember it. Perhaps it was some sort of Buffalo type embedding, but Ive asked him if he can remember it and even he doesnt remembre it now. Haplolology Talk/Contributions 20:49, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Linux summary threads
Hi Mako,
Just to let you know that the reason I haven't edited the Talk:Linux/Referring to this article is because I happen to agree with the current state of it, rather than because I'm avoiding it or whatever. Thanks for taking the time to help forge an agreement here. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 17:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
Monokini image
Hi, I noticed you removed an image from Bikini because it was the subject of a deletion request on Commons. Please be aware that there is a bot, User:CommonsDelinker which removes images which are deleted, and that the image in question is likely to be kept. The fact that the woman is potentially identifiable is irrelevant as the image was clearly taken in a public place. -mattbuck (Talk) 16:17, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
What's wrong with bank notes?
They're anonymous and you can exchange them for goods and services!
Or is your objection simply to the 'sight-ist' US implementation? I think sac-jays are pretty great, personally. Miserlou (talk) 03:20, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I do like the sac-jays as a replacements for dollars and I do prefer cash to credit cards or checks. What I I do not like is the demoninations, colors, and sizing of the US bank-notes and coinage. There are other issues as well: for example, a dime doesn't actually specify how much it's worth! I much prefer Euro banknotes and coins. Each denomination is sized according to its value and colored and groved so as to be more clear. Japanese bank notes and coinage take a different approach but with similar effect. In fact, the US bank-notes and coinage, seem to be particularly annoying! —mako๛ 22:22, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

denomination optimization
(an inkidabiddy pinkidabiddy!)
let E be the expected # of coins and D be the # of denominations. We want to minimize T=E+D for a given set of values N. To start out, we approximate this with an approx. minimum for T/logN, which will be a good solution for all N.
current US
1,2,5: E + D = 1.9 + 3 (4.9 for 10) 1,2,5,10,20,50 = 3.6 + 6 (9.6 for 100) ...,100,200,500 = 5.3 + 9 == each iteration adds 1.7 + 3 (4.7n for 10^n, T/logN = 4.7)
trinary and quaternary venutian
1,3 (3) = 1 + 1 [2 for 3] (over time : 2n/3^n, T/logN = 4.19) 1,4 (4) = 1.5 + 1 [2.5 for 4] (2.5n/4^n : E/logN = 4.15) 1,x (x) = [(x+1)/2 for x] (T/logN = (x+1)/2log(x) = S(x)). 0,1,2,3,...,x-1 : (x-1)/2 x | S(x) 2 5 3 4.19 4 4.15 5 4.29 S'(x) = 1/logx(1/2) - 1/log^2(x)[log(e)/2(1 + 1/x)] S' = 0 ==> log(e)xlogx = (x+1)log^2(x)

- "The common name is the same as the scientific name, which is a rarity."
What part do you not trust about this statement? I can provide a reference for the first part of the sentence, but surely the last part is obvious. This is the only case that I know of where the binomial (not just the generic or the specific) and the common name are the same, and certainly as far as snakes are concerned. (PS -- Please answer here, as I've temporarily added your talk page to my watchlist). --Jwinius (talk) 11:18, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- I think the first part of the sentence is obvious (the scientific name is right there) but saying the second part conveys little useful information. Is it unique? If not, are there other examples? If it's not possible to answer that question, maybe it's not worth stating it or saying something slightly more concrete. If the question is not answerable, maybe it's worth changing, "is a rarity," to "is unusual," which doesn't seem to cause me to wonder "how rare" quite as much. Thanks for the message! —mako๛ 14:45, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Very well, I will change it "unusual." --Jwinius (talk) 14:48, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
