Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Many thnaks for reviewing the article. I have introduced a link to the article in the last hour. If you could review it again for me I would be most obliged. Many thanks.Gomach (talk) 17:25, 16 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey

Hey Ben...how've you (snicker) been? Teehee. Okay, enough chit-chat. I think we both know why I'm here. I decided that a template needs to exist and I'm useless at that. Any chance you can give me a hand again? Achowat (talk) 14:56, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Achowat: Sure! (If I can ;-) What needs doing? benzband (talk) 16:02, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
File:Puerto Rico National Merit.JPG has an image (which is being use) but no standard template. As I try to standardize the WP:Awards pages, that has become inconvenient to me. So I said, 'do you know what guy I used to work with a year ago would know how to fix this?' Then I spent 10 or so minutes digging through my old Talk Archives until I remembered! Achowat (talk) 16:17, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: Okay, what should it be called though? ("Puerto Rico Barnstar of National Merit" / "Puerto Rican Barnstar of National Merit" / "Puerto Rico National Merit Medal" / … ?) benzband (talk) 16:25, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
There seems to be 6 or 7 standards being used. Why not "The Puerto Rico Barnstar" and ignore the tricky question of Puerto Rican nation-hood. Achowat (talk) 16:28, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
WAIT!! It seems that the people using it the Puerto Rico National Merit Medal. What can we do about this? (and yes, by 'we', I mean primarily 'you') Achowat (talk) 16:39, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: I have just created it at Template:Puerto Rico Barnstar (before I saw this) on the model of other BoNM templates. (Is it okay or does it need any changes?) We could move it to "Template:Puerto Rico National Merit Medal" or leave it and create a redirect from that page, but I don't know which is the best solution. benzband (talk) 16:52, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Award looks great. As to what the best solution is; if it's a Template issue and you don't know, lord knows I don't. Achowat (talk) 18:45, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: I've asked at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Puerto Rico#Barnstar. benzband (talk) 19:42, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: The creator of the barnstar image was favorable to calling it "Puerto Rico National Merit Medal", and the WikiProject calls it that too so I have moved the template, leaving a redirect. I've also added a |title= parameter though, so that editors who wish to have it display a different name can do so. benzband (talk) 18:07, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
¡Excellente! So we should be all set, right? Achowat (talk) 20:58, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: Indeed, I think so! benzband (talk) 21:15, 20 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

VisualEditor newsletter • 19 December 2013

edit

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has worked on some toolbar improvements, fixing bugs, and improving support for Indic languages as well as other languages with complex characters. The current focus is on improving the reference dialog and expanding the new character inserter tool.

There have been dozens of changes since the last newsletter. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Rich copying and pasting is now available. If you copy text from another website, then character formatting and some other HTML attributes are preserved. This means, for example, that if you copy a pre-formatted suggested citation from a source like this, then VisualEditor will preserve the formatting of the title in the citation. Keep in mind that copying the formatting may include formatting that you don't want (like section headings). If you want to paste plain, unformatted text onto a page, then use Control+⇧ Shift+V or ⌘ Command+⇧ Shift+V (Mac).
  • Auto-numbered external links like [1] can now be edited just like any other link. However, they cannot be created in VisualEditor easily.
  • Several changes to the toolbar and dialogs have been made, and more are on the way. The toolbar has been simplified with a new drop-down text styles menu and an "insert" menu. Your feedback on the toolbar is wanted here. The transclusion/template dialog has been simplified. If you have enabled mathematical formula editing, then the menu item is now called the formula editor instead of LaTeX.
  • There is a new character inserter, which you can find in the new "insert" menu, with a capital Omega ("Ω"). It's a very basic set of characters. Your feedback on the character inserter is wanted here.
  • Saving the page should seem faster by several seconds now.
  • It is now possible to access VisualEditor by manually editing the URL, even if you are not logged in or have not opted in to VisualEditor normally. To do so, append ?veaction=edit to the end of the page name. For example, change https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random?veaction=edit to open a random page in VisualEditor. This is intended to support bug testing across multiple browsers, without requiring editors to login repeatedly.

Looking ahead: The transclusion dialog will see further changes in the coming weeks, with a simple mode for single templates and an advanced mode for more complex transclusions. The new character formatting menu on the toolbar will get an arrow to show that it is a drop-down menu. The reference dialog will be improved, and the Reference item will become a button in the main toolbar, rather than an item in the Insert menu.

If you have questions or suggestions for future improvements, or if you encounter problems, please let everyone know by posting a note at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/Feedback. Thank you! Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 20:35, 19 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I wish I knew how to quit you.

So, aside from Templates...might your expertise extend to areas more tabley? Achowat (talk) 05:49, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Achowat: So far I've only had experience creating basic tables, but I'm eager to try! benzband (talk) 17:26, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
So, I'm creating a sandbox to fix WP:RIB. But there is a problem here. See, usually there are three columns per row (1 of the award image, then three for the ribbons). The problem comes with those Incremental Service Awards. Now the image of the award in the first column applies to 4 row of the other three columns. So, the ideal solution would be to somehow have a row that was one box four rows long, and then three columns of the four individual rows or ribbons (or the space where ribbons should be). If that makes any sense...Achowat (talk) 20:25, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: Does this do the trick? I added | rowspan="4" to the first out of every four rows on the first column, and removed the other three out of four; and this for the Registered, Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Yeoman and Experienced editor levels. benzband (talk) 21:53, 23 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know what you did, or how, but it's perfect. Bravo! Achowat (talk) 04:24, 24 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yup, this again

Oh great Duke of all things Template and wondrous. I come again to you, hat in hand, in this my hour of need. If you have a sec. I don't even begin to know how difficult my requests are. So if they're particularly egregious, feel free to smack me (trout or otherwise). Achowat (talk) 15:10, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Achowat: You flatter me :) What's to be done? (Also, I hope you had a Merry Christmas!)   ~ benzband (talk) 20:42, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Merry enough. I hope you had a sufficiently joyous occasion yourself. So I'm working on getting Portal:Canada up to FPO standards. And one thing I need is work on the "Selected Panorama" template. Essentially, I need the "More information" that populates to disappear and another criteria to give a photo credit (similar to the "Selected Picture" template of the same portal). Achowat (talk) 21:00, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: Yup, same here, thankyou. I've added the extra parameters from Portal:Canada/Selected picture/Layout to Portal:Canadian/Selected panoramic picture/Layout (see diff), but I figured I'd better check before editing all the /Selected panorama/# subpages; does this first one: Portal:Canada/Selected panorama/1 (see diff) now look as it should? benzband (talk) 22:59, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I believe so, yes. Achowat (talk) 23:01, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat:   Done the 19 selected panoramas. All good? benzband (talk) 23:45, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Things look pretty good (I'm having cacheing issues, but I checked a few). Did you legit research and add the image credits? Achowat (talk) 23:47, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: I used the image credits that were given in the file descriptions.
As for the cache, I had that too at first, but I use a gadget which gives a link for purging the cache (you probably already know these though; under Appearances: there's a "purge tab" one, and one which combines a purge button with a UTC clock - I use the latter). benzband (talk) 23:57, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good work. That saved me about 10 minutes worth of work. And I haven't slept since Christmas night, so I appreciate it. Achowat (talk) 00:05, 28 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Achowat: No problem! I'm glad I was able to help. benzband (talk) 00:23, 28 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
