red-outlined triangle containing exclamation point' skip section tag'

edit

I have some ideas for your skip section tag... I'm only giving one because I'm lazy: It seems a bit redundant; how about having a tag to flag sections with an importance level (low/mid/high), and the menu could automatically put high sections in bold+italics, or something like that. Squish7 (talk) 19:43, 1 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

However i wouldn't be able to implement such a change. You could discuss it at the idea lab (before proposing it). Above i have customized the section header using {{warnsign}}, but this doesn't show in the table of contents (TOC). I'll see what i can do; also please feel free to propose any more ideas, no problem. benzband (talk) 08:10, 2 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. In your recent article edits, you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

MotD

edit

First of all, hello! Now that that's over with... A nomination for Wikipedia's birthday was just passed. However, there was an alternative that got proposed, but t didn't really get a chance to be discussed. As this is a somewhat important day, I think it would be best if all options were able to be discussed. If people prefer a different one, there is still time to switch out the motto, so there is still time for discussion. Any comments you might have would be greatly appreciated! ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 00:10, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

  Well, it was me who nominate the alternative in the first place ;-) Thanks anyway, benzband (talk) 16:30, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Re: The Encyclopedia of Punk

edit

Hi Benzband, thanks for your message. I found this article only because it had been reporting an ambiguous link here, that I followed for the purpose of fixing. I removed the ambiguous "punk" link, only because I assumed it had been placed there accidentally, by someone unaware that it linked to a dab page. I would normally have disambiguated the link to target either "punk rock" or "punk subculture", but because those links already exist in the list, it seemed most logical to simply remove the ambiguous. WP:SEEALSO tells us not to include red-links or links to disambiguation pages in this section, so it's likely to be removed again and again by bots and other disambiguators if you decide to restore it. Using the same reasoning, they might even remove the entire section. I hope this helps address your questions and concerns. :)  -- WikHead (talk) 19:14, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem :). You could probably introduce additional links from "punk" elsewhere in the article, if/where applicable, or get creative with hatnotes or other similar link templates to help work around the "see also" issue. Best of luck to you. Happy editing! :)  -- WikHead (talk) 21:21, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

~~~~
edit
In a template, is there a way of making the user's signature appear upon use, but not on the actual template page? A bit like in the Wikilove extension, where the four tildes are added automatically. benzband (talk) 10:01, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes - the template {{firstarticle}} supplies the signature automatically. Look at the text of that to see how it's done -it looks complicated, and I can't say I understand it, but it works. JohnCD (talk) 11:15, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I've copied the text into {{towel}} and it now works properly. I also think i've figured it out :
This: ~~<includeonly>~~</includeonly><noinclude>~~</noinclude> shows up as :
  • ~~~~ on the template page
  • ~~~~ on the target page
It's all the <includeonly> </noinclude> tags. It cannot expand in the template page because of the <noinclude> tags in the middle, that rule it out like in {{4~}}. However after substitution on the target it can expand as the four tildes are in a row. Cheers, and thanks again, benzband (talk) 12:25, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Interesting. I've never really got to grips with "noinclude" and "includeonly". You learn something new every day! JohnCD (talk) 14:29, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Frankly I feel a bit disappointed about this[6]. Am I the only editor who feels a simple "NO" would have sufficed?--Djathinkimacowboy irrelevancies 20:22, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps I read it in error. Looks like a NO-in-the-making. They've stripped the star of meaning, laughed at your design and now want to squeeze out anything that had to do with the original idea. It was so simple, to award this star to editors who help other editors with rules, and secondly, editors who do the coverage thing about Wikipedia. They can't understand that?   Hello. You have a new message at Djathinkimacowboy's talk page.
OK, benzband, you may have tired of this as much as I, but if you'll look at Guayabera, Zucchetto as examples... I think it'd be nice to create a barnstar for editors who enrich, improve and expose such "orphaned" articles to the public. Please reply my page. Do you think they'll like a rusty iron star with an image of a raggedy orphan in the centre ? Oh, I already know there is a star that would cover that... my thinking was inspired to see if we can streamline this star-creation process, get better stars and encourage more awards. Hi Benz, glad I could see that thread, and of course I contributed a few lines. I'm sorry, I don't want you dragged into anything but then again, I am not starting anything... only, I had to tell those people this pisses me off. That new barnstar proposal they all love so damned much is our barnstar and they know it.
I mean, I was totally dismissing the fact that you moved in on the Quasar to get your star, I nearly congratulated you for that. To have someone come out of the blue and steal my idea is another matter. You didn't notice that it was my original idea for the Quasar??--Djathinkimacowboy what now?! 13:16, 14 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I just caught wind of a December 18th post in which Pine warned the editor to go through the right channels to propose a new barnstar[7]. For me, it is a little more evidence that the editor stole my idea. Read his reply to Pine's admonition. This whole thing sucks. I feel like I cannot trust anyone on here.--Djathinkimacowboy what now?! 15:13, 14 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
WELL DONE AND THANK YOU! I will take a look again tomorrow to see if it is possible to approve the "SOPA initiative" nomination. BESTest! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:36, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh... wait a moment... but if there will be a full blackout (and, IMHO, it is necessary to take the strongest action possible), then the motto of the day will be obscured too (lol). –pjoef (talkcontribs) 18:33, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
I gave my unconditional (and strong) support to option #1 (full blackout in the US and banner outside the US), but I've also supported the full blackout all around the world. I really hope that this initiative will bring the desired results (especially for Wikipedia). About the motto nom., and as I wrote before, I'll take a look at it tomorrow morning. No need to thank me ... the pleasure is all mine (^____^) ...kidding! And, yes about the protest/resistace thing ... hahahaha – At least in the music world, Franks Zappa was the granfather and the standard bearer of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. I really love Frank and his fantastic Music (with the capital "M")!!! But there are also a couple of songs by a favourite "act" of mine that are good for this "occasion" ... or, to be more precise, four songs: 1. 1; 2. 2; 3. 3; and 4. 4. But, the atmosphere is strange out on the town, so, there is nothing left to do, other than a great WaRdAnCe (^____^) (which is my favourite of them ... and IMHO one of the best songs ever).  HaPpY BlAcK OuT DaY  ... Pjoef: Being the nosy sort, may I remind you re: your statement: "At least in the music world, Frank Zappa was the grandfather and the standard bearer of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution."...I'm afraid that honour goes to John Lennon. It doesn't matter when he moved here, because as he said, he was "born American". Zappa was great, but you cannot ignore Lennon, Hendrix or Marley as forerunners.--Djathinkimacowboy 21:01, 20 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, of course, and also MC5, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, among many others. However, John Lennon was more related to the 2nd Amendment, because of his murder. About Frank, I was referring especially to this: "The first thing I would like to do, because I know there is some foreign press involved here and they might not understand what the issue is about, one of the things the issue is about is the First Amendment to the Constitution, and it is short and I would like to read it so they will understand. It says: &#147;Congress shall make no law...&#148;" (COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, SCIENCE, AND TRANSPORTATION; 1985). But, there are many other examples. For example, there is a 1988 article by Frank, On Junk Food for the Soul published by New Perspectives Quarterly, which covers some of those aspects. John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, all are among my favourites in music and not only in music, and it could not be otherwise! Thanks for your reply... and all the best. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 12:36, 21 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
You should perhaps read the official policy on fair use, which notes that "Non-free content is allowed only in articles (not disambiguation pages), and only in article namespace". Ironholds (talk) 18:28, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Wow. Thanks for informing me. However am i to understand that all the other mottos are to go too? That is, because they are mostly quotes (from songs, films, books, speeches, etc.)? Cheers, benzband (talk) 18:35, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
With something that wide I'd suggest an MfD for the whole thing (which I'm happy to start). Ironholds (talk) 18:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
It seems that something like that would probably be necessary... If we can't use quotes such as that, there wouldn't really be much left of the project, so sending it all to MfD would probably be best. Would having quotes like this for sure not be allowed, then? I would think that somebody would have brought this up a while ago, but I suppose it could have gone unnoticed... Ironholds, what about the sentence in the fair use policy stating that "Articles and other Wikipedia pages may, in accordance with the guideline, use brief verbatim textual excerpts from copyrighted media, properly attributed or cited to its original source or author, and specifically indicated as direct quotations via quotation marks, <blockquote>, or a similar method."? I'm probably missing something, as I'm not at too terribly familiar with this subject, but I figured I should at least point that out. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 18:53, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) o_O Note that deleting today's motto didn't solve much as an other was displayed in it's place. Oh well, this probably means something drastic for MotD. And Ironholds, please inform me if you ever do start an MfD, so i can oppose it   benzband (talk) 18:58, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi878: "in accordance with this guideline" :). I'll get a quick sanity check before doing anything, I promise. Ironholds (talk) 19:15, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I did notice that... What was "the guideline" that it was referring to? I couldn't quite figure that out. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 19:17, 22 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Isn't a quotation published (for example) on the English, Italian, and Portuguese Wikiquote, in the public domain and available under a CC-By-SA-compatible free license?
I think it is necessary to move (and/or copy) all these discussions (User_talk:Pjoef#Speedy...2012, User_talk:Marcus_Qwertyus#Speedy_deletion, User_talk:Ironholds#Reply, User_talk:Benzband#MotD_CSD, and User_talk:Hi878#Speedy_deletion) from the users talk pages to the project talk page. I got a beepin' notice for having approved a beepin' motto by following the second conduct policy, primary way of decisions on Wikipedia, and the best method to achieve our goals (a.k.a "consensus"). Also, I would like to nominate: " Hi. I'm Marcus.", or something like: This page has been darkened..../Imagine Wikipedia without Motto of the Day...." for January 22, 2012 to replace the deleted/blanked page. I think I will go with the first one (and, for the very first time, with or without "consensus"). –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:55, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • pjoef, the mere fact that something is published on wikipedia does not mean that the copyright holder has magically been forced to give up their rights; it could be fair use. On the MotD front, the sanity check has basically said "just IAR and pretend you never saw it", so we'll go with that :). Ironholds (talk) 11:34, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
    I have tried but I cannot understand what you are saying. If something is published into the public domain than it isn't a copyvio. Fair use does not apply for public domain works with CC-By-SA-compatible free license such as Wikiquote. Anyway, I was just asking. What has IAR to do with using (very short portions) songs' lyrics at MotD? Can it help? I do not claim or pretend anything, but I'm just asking how to proceed for not repeating such things again. I would like to remember you that it is possible and it is acceptable to use quotations for interest or decorative purposes on user pages, And, the MOTD is displayed on user pages. If I am wrong, please correct me. You are more than welcome to join our project and take part to the review process. For these reasons, I think it is necessary TO MOVE this and other related discussions to Wikipedia talk:Motto of the day. All the best and happy editing. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 13:19, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
    I agree that it would make more sense moving this to WT:MOTD as this concerns the whole project. Also i must say i agree with everything pjoef has just said to defend the case. As replacing the motto, i would have supported that but i'm a bit late for it. Also, i'd like to point out that today's motto, for example ( Viriliter Age), is not a copyright violation (unless you live in a country were copyright extends 2 or 3 millennium after the author's death, of course ;-). benzband (talk) 18:28, 23 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hi. When you recently edited Military and smoking, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Department of Defense (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
The edit you identified as vandalism was not. You seem to have overlooked the edit summary that explained my edit (that's what I took the trouble to use it for). STiki's "state-of-the-art detection methods" appear to have failed. Neither was my edit a "test". I am experienced editor with over 5 years of editing under my belt. ClueBot now thinks I'm a vandal as well, so I'd appreciate a note on my talk page acknowledging my good faith edit. I'd appreciate it far more if you'd go back to the article and revert to my original edit. Thanks, 173.48.120.161 (talk) 02:07, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes indiscriminate blanking of articles is obviously bad. But that's not what I did. As I mentioned above, my edit summary explained why I removed what I did; I wasn't randomly vandalizing. If you disagree with my edit and reasoning for it, can you please explain it to me, beyond "blanking sections violates many policies" (especially since I did not blank any sectons)? Also, ClueBot thought my reverting you was vandalism because you tagged my original edit as vandalism, not because of what I did in my original edit. Thanks in advance for your clarification. 173.48.120.161 (talk) 23:39, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Joking apart, I was taking a look at (and experimenting a bit of CSS with) your Motd template I was trying to move the floating right part that contains the motto of the day, and create a rounded but not convex (concave set or non-convex set) border, but I need (at least) an image to do it because CSS only accepts positive angles. Best!
Re: English Civil War
edit
I really don't mind about music styles (and their changing) in infobox templates. Music styles are for music critic, while chenaging the filed value(s) is for edit wars. Personally I think it is a Rock/Punk Rock song with a bit of Ska, and strongly influenced by (derived from) a Traditional song. A note about music critics: they do not see anything even if it is right under their noses [or ears ~ hahahaha] (in the sense that they are not ready to novelties and innovations, and this applies in all fields, not only Music.) Bestest! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:10, 27 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hum... I think I will wait and see what happens... thanks for the advice! Combat Rock isn't Punk Rock. ~ lol –pjoef (talkcontribs) 16:08, 27 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it was obvious that it was going to end this way (*_~). I can always bet on it, and, for this reason, I haven't paid any attention to this. Thanks for giving it a look! Best! –pjoef (talkcontribs) 13:16, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
