Help Project newsletter : Issue 3

The Help Project Newsletter Issue III - August 2012 | |
|
Welcome to the (slightly delayed) third issue of the Help Project newsletter. The past month has once again been a busy one for my fellowship. The full results and conclusions from the extensive user survey on help pages are now available, and make interesting reading. These do confirm a number of our suspicions about Wikipedia help, and suggest that the current plan for the remainder of the fellowship is a sound approach. Also last month I was fortunate enough to attend Wikimania 2012 in Washington DC, where I gave a presentation about help pages and the aforementioned survey results. You can find the slides from this on Commons. Wikimania was also a great opportunity for many discussions with staff and community members, and these brought up some interesting ideas which I hope to follow up on. One of the things much discussed was the planned tutorial pages. I've been working on a new design for them which can be seen at User:The wub/sandbox/1, please let me know what you think (especially if you spot any bugs!). Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. If you don't wish to receive this newsletter on your talk page in future then just edit the participants page and add "no newsletter" next to your name. |
Hey Benjamin Zarmuda Band, it's been too long! (And of course, I have a template chore for you ). Any way you can set up arching for the Vandalism Studies talk page? Many thanks. Achowat (talk) 17:08, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- Done in the same way as WT:CVUA (7 days), and added a talk header which will display the archives and a search bar. It should be archived next time MiszaBot runs :-) benzband (talk) 18:41, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- We make a good team, you and I. I notice something that needs to be fixed and then you go and fix it. One hell of a partnership. Achowat (talk) 18:44, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Page Triage newsletter
editHey all. Some quick but important updates on what we've been up to and what's coming up next :).
The curation toolbar, our Wikimedia-supported twinkle replacement. We're going to be deploying it, along with a pile of bugfixes, to wikipedia on 9 August. After a few days to check it doesn't make anything explode or die, we'll be sticking up a big notice and sending out an additional newsletter inviting people to test it out and give us feedback :). This will be followed by two office hours sessions - one on Tuesday the 14th of August at 19:00 UTC for all us Europeans, and one on Wednesday the 15th at 23:00 UTC for the East Coasters out there :). As always, these will be held in #wikimedia-office; drop me a note if you want to know how to easily get on IRC, or if you aren't able to attend but would like the logs.
I hope to see a lot of you there; it's going to be a big day for everyone involved, I think :). I'll have more notes after the deployment! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 20:15, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
Miza
editIf I manually archive all but the most recent two sections here will it mess up Miza? Dan653 (talk) 21:55, 3 August 2012 (UTC)
- I don't know. Misza has run anyway, so that should be sorted :D benzband (talk) 07:17, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
- O, lol, great :D Dan653 (talk) 15:07, 4 August 2012 (UTC)
The barnstar
editHi, there! Although about two weeks late, I want to thank you for awarding me a barnstar just because I created an article for the new NOFX album Self Entitled. I feel very appreciated. One of the biggest fans of The Offspring (what's up?) 23:03, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five
editHi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!
- Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
- More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
- Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
- New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
- Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.
As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

editScholarly Breeze has given you a LOLipop! This horrible pun and delicious candy promotes WikiLove and tells the world how low you will stoop for the sake of humor. Spread WikiLove by giving someone else a lollipop, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past or a good friend.
This is for a) the support you've given me from my nature stories to an image I uploaded b) for the countless contributions to the motto of the day (seriously, how many mottos have you suggested?) and c) for your general kindness and humor. Change to my post at the help desk
editHi Benzband. Knowing you, I know you only had good intentions. Please don't change other user's posts. The code, with the timestamp, was my instruction to the user and even though the timestampt was unecessary, you still shouldn't change it, unless it is something so obvious like a person leaves a red link to a policy because of an obvious typo (and even then you would probably say something in the edit summary like "fixed obvious typo in link, hope you don't mind"). See also WP:TPOC.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 11:41, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed that was out of line, and thanks for letting me know. The only explanation i've got is that I tried your code, and the panel proceeded to removing the timestamp upon pressing save. From now on i will refrain from modifying other users posts (except archiving this talkpage). benzband (talk) 11:59, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- Great. By the way, letting me know that the software would ignore the timestamp code I placed by telling me on my talk page, on the other hand, would have been appropriate and appreciated.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:04, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'll do that next time. This was a big failure on my part, especially seeing as i had previously done a similar thing with the {{helpme}} template. benzband (talk) 12:11, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

'nother suggestion
editI saw your note at the help desk that you were looking for something to work on. You were given a great example of an are needing help. If that works for you great, if it doesn't or, as it seems, you like to poke around and try different things, then Wikipedia:Copyright problems might be worth a peek.
Some aspects are frustrating, but sometimes, you get to play internet detective, and that can be a bit of fun. If you are interested, Wikipedia:Text Copyright Violations 101 is like a how-to manual. The big plus is that if you do like working on it, you ill get the undying gratitude of Moonriddengirl, and that's nothing to sneeze at.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 20:32, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

New Pages newsletter
editHey all :)
A couple of new things.
First, you'll note that all the project titles have now changed to the Page Curation prefix, rather than having the New Pages Feed prefix. This is because the overarching project name has changed to Page Curation; the feed is still known as New Pages Feed, and the Curation Toolbar is still the Curation Toolbar. Hopefully this will be the last namechange ;p.
On the subject of the Curation Toolbar (nice segue, Oliver!) - it's now deployed on Wikipedia. Just open up any article in the New Pages Feed and it should appear on the right.
It's still a beta version - bugs are expected - and we've got a lot more work to do. But if you see something going wrong, or a feature missing, drop me a note or post on the project talkpage and I'll be happy to help :). Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 00:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
I don't know that when it'll be out after getting finished, but can you please wait until 25 August. I plan to nominate quite a few Green Day singles after overhaul as I got a break from my busy life till 23 August. Cheers! TheSpecialUser TSU 09:31, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
Edit conflict at AFC/R
editI noticed you just declined a few redirects and categories at WP:AFC/R because they already existed. They indeed existed because I just created them and hadn't yet found the time to edit AFC/R accordingly. I'm not sure that's the best outcome. Would you mind if I changed the replies to "accepted"? Huon (talk) 11:27, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- Nope, not at all. :-) benzband (talk) 12:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
I've taken a closer look at Jenny Eakin Delony. You've done a nice job of removing a lot of the problematic material, and rewritten much of the rest, but more may be needed. I'm also toying with an alternative approach, considering reaching out to the source to see if it can be properly licensed. This is just sort of a status report, as I am still looking into it.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 12:09, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

editFor the intervention at Nicosia. Now a registered user changes the name of the stadium to his/her liking. I would appreciate if you could interfer again, as I already reverted twice similar changes. Thanks again and all the best. --E4024 (talk) 21:03, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- I came there because i noticed your message at User talk:Sphilbrick. If you are referring to this edit by Seric2 (talk · contribs), i see no reason to revert it because Lefkoşa Atatürk Stadı redirects to Nicosia Atatürk Stadium anyway. Best ~ benzband (talk) 21:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks again. As you may see here, in a German website, the word Lefkoşa is part of the name of the stadium; that is the reason. Take care... --E4024 (talk) 21:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Hey Ben,
All the info you removed from "Jenny Eakin Delony" was written by LDBaker aka (Linda Hastings Baker). She is the author of the article on Jenny Delony that is on the Encyclopedia Of Arkansas. This was not copy and paste. I orginally put the article on and Linda Baker made some changes ( I talked to her about it). If you look at the "view history" you will see where she made changes. Would you please put back what you deleted?

A curious doubt
editHi there..I have been using rollback for a long time now and have made hundreds of edits using it.But in this edit you allegedly added an edit summary!..How the hell? Cheers TheStrikeΣagle 14:03, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- If you revert to a specific revision it allows an edit summary. I'm assuming Benzband used the "restore this version" button. Ryan Vesey 14:06, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

Portal formatting
editHey Benzo, I'm wondering if you can help me make the Portal I'm building a little more attractive (perhaps even both of them). I'm working on Portal:New England (trying to bring it up to Featured) and working on rebuilding Portal:Nazi Germany. The problem is, well, I've had a bit of a history with color blindness. Not to bother you with the medical details, but I'm at a place where I can't exactly percieve what colors work well together (and, aside from picking out ties, Wikipedia is really the only place it is a "disability"). If you could take a look at some of the other Featured portals and just change the colors at Portal:New England/box-header and Portal:New England/box-footer to some aesthetically-pleasing design, I would be forever indebted to you and would gladly name my first born son in your honor. Achowat (talk) 16:23, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

- I'm going to trust your judgment completely. Achowat (talk) 20:39, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

- According to the translated version [1], the chorus repeats "Shit, shit, the Lord's shit!", but using that to state that "the group attacked the representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church as money-grubbing "God's shit" (your edit) is borderline on original research. Also, the lyrics are critical of a wide range of people (from patriarch to Putin to "KGB", etc); so not just one group of people. benzband (talk) 15:53, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your help with "Rudy Buttignol". How do I edit out day and month of birth from infobox?
editHello, Benzband. Thanks for your help today with Rudy Buttignol and the Brittania Mine Museum entry. It's been a couple of months since I've done any Wikipedia edits and I was a little afraid that my Wikipedia brain would not work.
How do I delete Rudy Buttignol's month and date of birth from the infobox? He contacted me wanting only his year of birth here and in other places. I can edit out the other places but can't figure out how to delete from the infobox. Please help.
Sofiabrampton (talk) 18:18, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Sofiabrampton! In the infobox there is a line which says
| birth_date = {{Birth date and age|1951|06|18}}
, where 1951 is the year, 06 the month and 18 the day. - If possible the date of birth should be kept in the article, but per WP:DOB if the subject wishes not to have it displayed, then we can use just the year instead. Thus you can replace
{{Birth date and age|1951|06|18}}
with{{Birth year and age|1951}}
or simply1951
. Hope this helps benzband (talk) 19:10, 30 August 2012 (UTC)- Some hosts have answered your query at the Wikipedia Teahouse. I suggest reading their advice especially about the OTRS. benzband (talk) 19:15, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Hello Benzband, I tried to remove the month and day of birth from RUDY BUTTIGNOL'S infobox as you instructed (see above) but I got this: 1951 (age 60–61) Pordenone, Italy
What do I need to do so that his age appears as "61"?
Cheers! Sofiabrampton (talk) 05:31, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- You could remove the age template altogether by replacing
{{Birth date and age|1951|06|18}}
with simply1951
. If you wish to keep the age displayed, you could use1951 (age {{age|1951|06|18}})
with would produce: 1951 (age 73). Cheers, benzband (talk) 16:20, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
