GA nomination for Zainab Salbi

I have seen you nominated it for GA. A section on family or personal life might help. I have found some info on her divorce in 2007 and also a bit on her wedding gown of the first marriage. Her relation with the Saddam family could also be clarified a bit.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 07:26, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

There used to be more content about the relation with the Saddam family, I've just realised it's no longer there. Will put more in. Regarding the sections, the usual "early life and education", "career" and "family life" order don't work well for this biography because education and personal life are family life are all overlapping chronologically so much. Will work on this now, thanks. CT55555(talk) 14:09, 31 December 2022 (UTC)

Drag performance protests

Hi CT55555. I note your concluding comments at the Articles for deletion/Crystal Quartz. Just wanted to run this past you. Are you unnecessarily restricting your proposed article? Up to you, of course, to decide upon the article's scope but I wondered whether you've consider widening it to say "Drag performance protests" rather than restricting to Ontario or 2022. I was going to suggest merging the library storytime protests into Drag Queen Story Hour but that article seems restricted to a business venture and wouldn't be appropriate for the family restaurant show protest you highlighted. If you're interested, I'll provide you with links to some UK news items that may be of interest. Rupples (talk) 02:13, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for this suggestion. Quite soon after making my comments I also considered that indeed I had restricted it too much. I think I agree, I just need to search and look into this a bit more before reaching conclusions. CT55555(talk) 03:15, 30 December 2022 (UTC)

AfD

I'll learn from my mistakes here. I'm assuming deleting based on quick Google searches is not a sufficient way to delete articles, correct? I'll take some time reading WP:BEFORE, learn from my mistakes, and find a more sufficient way to determine the cause of deleting the article. Sarrail (talk) 17:55, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Thank you. This is the outcome I was hoping for. Yes, please do wider searches and if you update to say that you did, I will happily update my vote accordingly. All the best. CT55555(talk) 17:57, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
And yes, in summary, you should check google, google news, google books and google scholar. If you are even slightly experienced on wikipedia you will be entitled to access the wikipedia library, which is great. And if you are willing, for people who are likely to be noted in sources other than English, some sensible use of google translate or checking other language sources is a great thing to do, but beyond what WP:BEFORE calls for. CT55555(talk) 17:59, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
Yes. I'll collect more resources and data and see what I can find. I'll update once I am finished. Thank you for your cooperation.   Sarrail (talk) 18:18, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

I've managed to find two sources: [1], [2]. I checked Google, Google News, Google Books, Google Scholar, Wikipedia Library, French Wikipedia, and Yahoo but never came up with anything except those two references. Additionally, "Sophie Adam" still translates in French to "Sophie Adam". Sarrail (talk) 04:30, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Akshata Murty

On 7 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Akshata Murty, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Akshata Murty, the wife of British prime minister Rishi Sunak, reportedly has more personal wealth than King Charles III? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Akshata Murty. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Akshata Murty), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. In modern English, actor includes women and men. Actress is increasingly seen as archaic. Technically she is an actor and an actress.

OK thanks for the notification. It all feels a bit hasty, as inevitably the bots will reduce the file size, as I think they do for every file uploaded like this. Am I missing something? CT55555(talk) 19:30, 13 January 2023 (UTC)
Fair use files should be reduced on upload - otherwise we're still hosting the full size file, and the full size then gets populated to the various search engines image results. You can't just pull full size photos off Instagram and use them - even the BBC and similar sites made them smaller. It only takes a few minutes to crop.Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (Message me) 18:27, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Guru Jagat Edits

Hi CT55555,

I am starting a thread here to go over edits to the Guru Jagat wikipedia entry.

I recently submitted edits to the lede which you rejected citing: "The lede exists to summaries what is there, it's generally not the place to introduce new content or cite things."

Item 1. RE: The lede exists to summaries what is there. I previously submitted a much larger amount of information to the Guru Jagat entry which was rejected as soapboxing. My intention is to give a more macroscopic picture of this individual's life and contributions It is not possible for my lede to merely summaries what is there without submitting additional information to later sections.

Item 2. RE: it's generally not the place to introduce new content or cite things My edits added missing information about how the individual (Guru Jagat/Katie Griggs) was known (poet, author, teacher...) and why she was known (her major accomplishments and contributions). It does not introduce new content but simply adds further information to what was already written. These are all sourced from reliable references.

I am not interested in white washing. Please advise on the best way to submit additional documented facts. Thank you. AlioftheGreenHeart (talk) 21:14, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

You say "I previously submitted a much larger amount of information to the Guru Jagat entry which was rejected as soapboxing." but your edit there seems like your first edit. Did you do that initial work using a different account? CT55555(talk) 21:18, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

rollback

Hi CT55555. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 04:36, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Thank you. I have read the guide and will only use with caution and care. CT55555(talk) 13:18, 7 January 2023 (UTC)
@Beeblebrox can I ask your advice please? Obviously this tool came with the caution to only uses for vandalism. But I'm looking at a real example where someone has added a lot of uncited personal information to a BLP article of a notable criminal. In all liklihood, this ned editor is acting in good faith, but obviously completely ignorant of wikipedia norms. They made 9 edits, none of which are good, because they all add uncited information (date of birth, spouses' name etc etc). It's not vandalism, it's just bad due to privacy, verifiability, original research.
Should I rollback? Or, because this is not strictly speaking vandalism, does it mean I need to revert all 9 edits individually? Can I use common sense and roll back, or would that be me over using rollback? CT55555(talk) 21:10, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Hi CT, this may or may not be vandalism (depends) but no need to roll back individual edits. I suggest adding the WP:Twinkle gaget but absent that, you pull up the last good version in the history and click "restore this version" (at the top underneath "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia") with an edit summary. I have rollback but rarely use it unless it is rapid fire vandalism because Twinkle does everything I need. S0091 (talk) 21:20, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I activated Twinkle for the first time and that was easier than expected and avoided me having to worry about the Rollback thing. CT55555(talk) 22:32, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Oh good! Twinkle has other uses such as reporting to AIV, SPI, nominating articles/pages for CSD or AfD, tagging articles...all kind of things so quite handy. S0091 (talk) 22:40, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
I personally never use rollback, in fact I actually run a script that blocks it (admins get it by default whether we want it or not). I find Twinkle much more useful. Beeblebrox (talk) 03:50, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Template coding

Are you any good at template coding? Following the discussion at WP:MINING, I looked into the mine infobox; and it does have a parameter to embed another template. So I'm thinking I'll make an "EJ impact" template (or something like it) to describe impacts, and this can be embedded in the mine infobox without any need to alter it. This means people would have to fight it out on each page to get that template embedded (if it were contentious), but I'm willing to heed warnings that tinkering with the mine infobox won't go over well.

I'm sure I can figure out how to do this, but since you had expressed interest in it, I thought I'd see if you were experienced at interpreting the mess of curly braces that seems to make up template code... ThanksLarataguera (talk) 22:39, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Actually, it wasn't as hard as I feared it would be. Look here and tell me what you think? Larataguera (talk) 23:42, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
I'm sorry that I don't know how to do this, but I could figure it out, but I think that since you asked you have figured it out. CT55555(talk) 13:25, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Yes, I did. Sorry if that was confusing! I'm proposing the template at the discussion at WikiProject Mining, and I have placed the new template in the infobox at Mirador mine. Let me know if you see any problems. Larataguera (talk) 13:31, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

It looks good to me, I'm not happy with how the conversation is going over at WikiProject Mining so far, because it seems like people like the status quo of including positive things (which are mostly form primary sources) and not negative things (which are mostly from independent sources) and think that adding negative to the positive is WP:POV, when I think the opposite is true.
But I'm not saying any more for now to give others space to comment. I'm also curious about what others say about this.
Well done on pushing it forward. CT55555(talk) 13:49, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
Yes, statements like, listing negative stuff only can be pov pushing and misleading readers are just weird. But honestly the conversation is going far better than I thought it would. It's hard to know how and when to respond to some of the strange comparisons that people make while also being mindful not to clutter the discussion. Larataguera (talk) 15:34, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Page mover granted

Hello, CT55555. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! Salvio giuliano 23:25, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Just wanted to reach out and say thanks for the work you put into UFO-Memorial Ängelholm to rescue it. The site in Ängelholm is definitely weird, but if being normal were a prerequisite for this web site then I wouldn't be here. Take care, Rjjiii (talk) 23:03, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

AFDs

Hello, CT55555,

Although I don't always close discussions in keeping with your opinion, I just wanted to thank you for your thoughtful participation in AFDs. I can tell you take the process seriously for each nomination and carefully evaluate articles and their sources. Unfortunately, that care is not as wide-spread as I had hoped for when I first started handling closures last year. So, I appreciate your participation and I always carefully consider the opinions you state in deletion discussions. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 04:54, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Thank you. I was very active at AFD a year ago, then I found the battleground culture a bit much and stepped back, now I'm reengaging with a focus on women's biographies and ones that are relisted many times over. I share your concern that too many people seem to vote without care, and I fear nominate without searches. I am trying to do my little bit to improve the culture by role modelling more thoughtful answers. I appreciate your feedback. I notice that a very significant number of AFDs are being closed by you. I cannot tell if that is because few admins are working in this area, or if our interests overlap, but you certainly seem to be volunteering a lot. So thanks for that. CT55555(talk) 04:59, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
I had rarely participated in AFDs until January 2022. Then I put it on my daily roster of tasks to check on every day. The number of admins who patrol the day's closing AFDs varies a lot, we usually are short a few admins on the weekend, especially Saturday. I think we don't necessarily have a shortage of closers but we have a shortage of admins willing to make unpopular closing decisions. There are some closers who only handle AFDs that are unanimously Keep or Delete. I used to be very critical of this but I think I have three closures right now being reviewed at Deletion review, which is like ANI for admins, so I now I understand the reluctance to jump into a very divided AFD discussion. It's no fun to be put on the hot seat and have your decisions scrutinized even when you're confident you made the best decision.
We really need more editors participating in discussion in a thoughtful way. I know there are editors I use to regular see who don't frequent AFD any more probably because it's a lot of work to seriously evaluate an article subject. Plus the frequent disputes can wear down an editor's enthusiasm. I really appreciate editors who comment after relistings because often no one does. And I could be criticized for relying on relisting too much but I swear, I have seen outcomes change when new editors showed up after a discussion had been relisted a couple of times. So, you never know! Liz Read! Talk! 06:34, 15 February 2023 (UTC)
I have have the perception that WP:AFD used to be busier and kinder, but things seemed to become polarised in the run up to the ArbCom conduct at AFD case and while I think things have calmed down since some editors were topic banned, the effort needed to try and argue during that time exhausted me and frustrated me, because it seemed like some editors wanted to delete a lot, but did not want to do the searches first, nor did they listen to any argument, it felt very battlegroundy. So I've decided to give up on trying to rescue lots and focus on areas that seem more important (less about postage stamps and obscure television show and more about women scientists, activists and leaders).
I think AFD participation is also discouraged by the low-effort-high-volume nominations. It's an effort to rebut a deletion suggestion, but it seems acceptable to nominate like "fails GNG", so that's really off-putting I suspect. Especially when it feels like some people just agree with the "fails GNG" without convincing me that they really checked. A find that frequently a quick check of google books finds sources about older arts topics, Wikipedia Library often has sources on technical topics, but "a quick google search" seems to be a common justification to delete. Anyway, I'm preaching to the converted here, so: keep up the good work and thanks for the kind note(s). CT55555(talk) 06:48, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Draft:Move/Peter Cvjetanovic

Hello, CT55555,

You moved this page to this title earlier today and now another editor has tagged it for deletion. But typically these leftover pages from page moves are redirects and this page has an edit history. Did you mean to leave it at this title or is this part of an incomplete move? Thanks for any clarification you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 23:46, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

This is a strong clue that I'm doing something wrong. I used my new page mover powers to shift this out of the way (it was just a redirect with no meaningful history) so that I could move the draft of it in that I made.
I've done such a thing about three times so far. And I thought I was doing things correctly by shifting the not-needed one into draft, not leaving a redirect, and then moving the good one in.
So I was finishing doing what I was doing. Indeed deleting it is fine. But I guess now maybe I'm doing something wrong? CT55555(talk) 23:50, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

Also, one existing links weas broken, Way Back Machine helped me find it. I found some quotes on very unreliable sources, but was able to google elements of them to find better sources. Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Civilians killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine

A tag has been placed on Category:Civilians killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Talk! 01:54, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

@Liz, I'm confused..or I think I'm confused...which perhaps confirms I am confused, lol.
Maybe the category was empty a few hours ago and I think that User:Silver_seren has made edits to populate it since. I cannot find where the discussion is taking place. Perhaps the population of the category has ended the discussion? Sincere apologies, this is a new scenario for me. So if there is a discussion that I can take part in, and if either of the tagged editors could direct me towards it, I'd be grateful. SS, thanks for your recent edits. Liz, as always, thanks for the maintenance work you do. Peace. CT55555(talk) 04:48, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
It was empty when I got there. I would presume, if the cat was in a number of articles prior, that someone systematically went through and removed it from all of them. It's difficult to figure out who that was unless you remember one of the articles that was on there previously to my additions. SilverserenC 05:04, 22 February 2023 (UTC)
I think I've figured out the chain of events: The category was created at the same that I created Mykhailo Korenovsky. Sadly, I had to make that article into a redirect today, so that probably removed the only article with that category.
So no bad actors here, just nobody else using the category until today. So thanks for doing those edits! CT55555(talk) 05:27, 22 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi User:Onel5969, I think it was our disagreement at the AFD for the Romina Ashrafi article that prompted your kind note. I wanted to update you that since it was kept, I've improved it and I hope the improvements will help you see why I was so passionately disagreeing with you. CT55555(talk) 15:54, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
It could have been, but I think it was more a body of the entirety of our interactions. Other than the times when an AfD is closed solely on a !vote count, rather than policy, (which happens way too often), I rarely mind when an article is kept. I've said often, I know that some folks fervently believe that AfD is not for cleanup, but coming from the perspective of someone who takes patrolling new articles seriously, I much prefer the philosophy of the essay, Wikipedia:Using deletion as cleanup, as sometimes the only way to bring an article up to snuff is to force folks, through the threat of deletion, to work on the article. You've done a bang-up job on the article, and you should be proud of that. Onel5969 TT me 17:06, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. I see both sides of the not for cleanup and use for cleanup arguments, although I favour the first one. I wonder if we could change the incentives towards us all collectively spending more time on article improvement.
I'm imagining a system like an apprenticeship whereby nobody gets to create an article until they have first improved one to C-class level. I know what will never fly, but right now there are a bunch of indicates that many enjoy like number of articles created, number of articles deleted, number of AFDs proposed/won/lost etc, but much fewer incentives to do the work of improvement.
I don't have a solution. But anyway, thanks again for your note. I appreciate wikipedia's culture of respectful disagreement. CT55555(talk) 17:14, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
Trying to think of solutions as I start to understand better the motivations to use deletion as cleanup...what if there was a WikiProject:Article_Improvement?
A place where editors who saw poor articles with potential, would like them improved, found tagging not to work, could direct improvement requests as a half way house between tagging and AFD? The project could use barnstars and leaderboards and other incentives (that I know some people will say are not, should not be needed, but I think the psychologists will agree do work) to incentivise improvement. What do you think? I see some polarization on Wikipedia and labeling of others (deletionist, inclusionist) and this might be a way to bridge some common ground and align people around a common purpose. CT55555(talk) 17:51, 19 February 2023 (UTC)
Hi. Not ignoring this, but pretty busy, and want to devote appropriate time to the response. Onel5969 TT me 17:04, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
Okay, so finally have a moment or two. First I don't think that the C-class idea will ever fly. There are quite a few competent editors who do nothing but create stubs, which satisfy either GNG or one of the SNG's. In fact, I would hazzard a guess that there are more of those than editors who have created GA or FA articles. Second regarding WikiProject:Article_Improvement. I think that's a great idea. And much less prone to the issues which have cropped up from time to time over at Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron – Rescue list, where many editors treat it as a way to do fly-by voting at AfD, rather than actually improving articles. There are quite a few editors who love to work at improving articles (one of the first projects I was involved in was over at GOCE, for instance). I don't think you'd have the deletionist/inclusionist issue, since you're not asking folks to comment on notability, simply asking volunteers to help improve articles. It's a daunting task, but I think it could be a worthwhile one. I checked and there isn't a current project which is like the one you're proposing, although there are several similar ones: Wikipedia:WikiProject Quality Article Improvement, Wikipedia:WikiProject Lead Improvement Team, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub improvement, but none are what you're talking about. There are some interesting tips on starting a project at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide#Creating a WikiProject. I'd definitely be supportive, and would probably join the project, although I don't know how much help I'd be. One suggestion I have, is if you could sort the articles into areas of interest. For example, at NPP, we can sort by subject matter: e.g. films, geography, etc. That way folks with an interest in a particular area could focus on those. You'd also need to decide if there will be a template which can be added to existing articles which need work. Many projects use something like that (e.g. the stub templates, or copy edit templates), and that way an automatic article list would be created. Or, will you simply rely on folks adding articles to the list, similar to what ARS does? If you do go for it, I'll be happy to help in any way that I can, depending on my time commitments. Anyway, sorry for being so long-winded, but as I said, I wanted to give a comprehensive answer.Onel5969 TT me 18:15, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

World War II and the history of Jews in Poland: Arbitration case opened

Hello CT55555,

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland/Evidence. Please add your evidence by April 04, 2023, which is when the first evidence phase closes. Submitted evidence will be summarized by Arbitrators and Clerks at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/World War II and the history of Jews in Poland/Evidence/Summary. Owing to the summary style, editors are encouraged to submit evidence in small chunks sooner rather than more complete evidence later.

Details about the summary page, the two phases of evidence, a timeline and other answers to frequently asked questions can be found at the case's FAQ page.

For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

Image stuff

Hello CT5! Copyright law and image licensing stuff is complicated and confusing. I think the only way that this article can legally include an image of their 2D work is if it is not in the public domain, or if it is uploaded with the proper non-free use rationale - see: Template:Non-free 2D art if there is enough critical commentary about the specific work in the article, and the image must be within non-free use specifications. This is why I started to include additional content on her MTA mural, The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao and also her installation, To breathe full and free: a declaration, a re-visioning, a correction (19º36’16.9”N 72º13’07.0’’W, 42º21’48.762’’N 71º1’59.628’’W). I think those paragraphs need to be more developed before fair-use images can be added.

Here's several links about images and image sourcing that may (or may not) be helpful:

DYK for Satoko Kishimoto

On 20 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Satoko Kishimoto, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Satoko Kishimoto is the first elected female mayor of Suginami, Tokyo? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Satoko Kishimoto. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Satoko Kishimoto), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thanks for the feedback. I expected that degree of rigour, but still I thought I'd lost the path to success at one point. I am grateful for your advice about how to get things back on the rails.
And you have predicted correctly, I plan to submit Uranium mining in the Bancroft area once I have incorporated all the learnings from this process into improving the article. CT55555(talk) 18:23, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Albuquerque Unicycle Club

Hello, thanks for creating the Albuquerque Unicycle Club page. It looks like you have some insight knowledge here. I'm collecting all information about the history of unicycle hockey. If you have any photos or newspaper articles (in addition to what is now available through the wikipedia page) about unicycle hockey in Albuquerque, I'd be very interested in those! RolfSander (talk) 11:53, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I don't have any more information other than what I put into the article. I learned about it while writing the article about Ted Jorgensen and then when his notability was challenges, it prompted me to dive deeper to learn more. I found all the news articles via the newspaper archive of the Wikipedia Library, most editors can get free access to it and I recommend that highly for researching most things. Freeness of File:Genesis Market criminal website screen grab.webp?

Hi CT55555

The domain seizure screenshot you uploaded is a work of FBI, which as work of U.S. government, it would be considered as PD. As it's currently tagged as non-free (likely due to it includes non-free logos, which is potentially considered as derivative work), maybe you can check if it's PD, and if appropriate, retag it with {{PD-USGov-FBI}}? I'm not sure if its truly PD with logos shown considered de minimis (too trivial to be considered derivative work). Stylez995 (talk) 21:48, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks. I had not thought of that, I have added the free use tag. CT55555(talk) 14:36, 6 April 2023 (UTC)

Article for Dupont PFAS contamination event?

I'm pretty sure that we should have an article for either the Dupont Washington Works chemical plant, or for the pollution event (maybe Dupont PFAS contamination) during which Dupont dumped PFOA into the environment around that plant from 1951-2003 (maybe even into 2020?! [4]). Possibly the best information about this on WP right now is at Robert Bilott the lawyer who represented the plaintiffs in a legal case about the disaster. (Should there be an article for the lawsuit?). I guess I'd like your opinion about the best approach here. Is it better to write an article about the facility or the pollution event? I'm sure different people have different opinions about how to do this. I suspect all 3 options here are notable, but I haven't hung out at AFD or done a lot of new article reviewing. Thoughts?

If this topic is interesting to you, feel free to help out. I won't be able to get to it for a while anyway... Thanks for your advice.

I saw you got an article featured. It's a good one. Congratulations! Larataguera (talk) 16:39, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. I'll need to research a bit before I can comment if the plant or the event is notable, but this is a great tip and I'll look into it.
And thanks for noticing the Ignace Tonené article. Given your interest in mining and equity, I'm pleased you like it. It will be featured on the front page on May 30th (Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 30, 2023) so that might serve to educate more people about this relatively unknown slice of history. That's great. Thank you!! Larataguera (talk) 01:00, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Do you have any more suggestions of important things that currently lack an article? CT55555(talk) 18:32, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I could probably come up with several. Are you mostly interested in concrete topics like places and people? How about Events? Abstract concepts? Are you equally interested in expanding stubs, or do you prefer articles that still need creation?
For instance, Dupont Chambers Works is another DuPont factory that could probably have its own article [5], but is currently a redirect. Larataguera (talk) 18:51, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Do you mostly edit topics related to US and Canada? Larataguera (talk) 18:52, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
I consciously try not to, but both are over represented in what I spend time editing. I prefer to edit articles about topics that are under reported. CT55555(talk) 19:05, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
That's where most of the sources are, so it's easy to get stuck there, and there are many articles in the US and Canada that do need to be written! This was part of the reason I passed Washington Works to you, actually. But if you like getting article suggestions I'm happy to make more. I just wouldn't want to make presumptions on your time.
Any thoughts on articles for PFOA contamination events? We have Water contamination in Lawrence and Morgan Counties, Alabama. That article has some information about PFOA contamination in other parts of the US under 'Related events'. I'm not sure of the best structure for this. Would PFOA contamination in Parkersburg, Virginia warrant a similar article? Or perhaps a single article should cover all of it? PFOA contamination in the US? Anyway, I'll pass on further tips if I find any that you might like. Larataguera (talk) 19:27, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
I would not start an article with the title "PFOA contamination...." because I doubt anyone is seeking articles with that title. I think it is better to write about things people might likely be searching for (companies, factories, rivers, very famous events). Although careful use of redirects can solve that.
Anyway, please share any list of suggests you have and if I feel like I can write something, I will. I might also add to my offline list of articles to get to and tackle it later. So don't hesitate to share suggestions, I think we have a mutual desire to create articles about important climate/equity/pollution related topics. CT55555(talk) 19:31, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
Sure. For a new article there is Big Sandy lithium mine, under development in Arizona. [6] [7]. It's an interesting one, because the developers have made an agreement with a Navajo-owned company, Navajo Transitional Energy Company, [8] but the mine is on land belonging to the Hualapai.
Is article creation important to you, or are existing stubs and redirects interesting? Larataguera (talk) 19:48, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
I find it easiest to start from zero. But expanding stubs is almost as easy. The more complicated an article already is, the more difficult it is, but I care more about making sure the important information is online than anything else. CT55555(talk) 20:03, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
That makes sense. So in addition to the above, you might consider Myron Dewey [9] and [10]. I don't know about notability for people, (I almost never edit articles about people), but if he got an obit in the LA Times seems like he might make it? Most of the news coverage is related to his death. Larataguera (talk) 20:10, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
A good suggestion. Done: Myron Dewey CT55555(talk) 01:30, 9 April 2023 (UTC)
New articles today:
  1. Cholla Canyon Ranch
  2. Cofer Hot Springs
  3. Big Sandy lithium mine
  4. Arizona Lithium
CT55555(talk) 23:06, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
damn you're fast Larataguera (talk) 23:25, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

One more. I might start a list in my user space for needed articles, and then you can watch that list so I don't have to bother you all the time! I'll post that list here if I do, and then you would be free to add to it (Although you write articles so fast, maybe you wouldn't need to!) There's a stub for Dairi mine. I think it might belong at Dairi Prima mine. Lead and zinc in Indonesia. [11] and [12] and [13]. Very dangerous exposure to Tailings dam failure. Plus all the usual I-don't-really-want-to-live-next-to-a-lead-mine stuff. Larataguera (talk) 22:49, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

I'll keep a list here and update it occasionally as I think of things. Larataguera (talk) 23:25, 8 April 2023 (UTC)
I've filled that list out a bit. I'll try to keep it up. I'd like your thoughts on integrating local social/environmental impacts into infoboxes when those impacts are well-documented and clearly salient in literature about a project. For example, Washington Works is mostly notable because events at this factory led to greater understanding of PFOA/PFAS toxicity. If it weren't for this, it would just be another factory and hardly notable. Unlike the mine infobox, the factory infobox does not have a space in which to insert the nested template I made for this purpose. Neither does Template:Infobox oil refinery. So we'd have to modify these infobox templates in order to give due weight to local impacts in specific cases where those impacts are highly notable and well documented. Many of the articles I'm proposing derive their notability from local impacts and resulting coverage of conflicts/lawsuits/etc, so I think those issues should be emphasised in lead paragraphs (which is easy) and infoboxes (which is harder). Thoughts? Larataguera (talk) 13:56, 10 April 2023 (UTC)
I've done some work today on Dairi mine and created an article on the owning company. CT55555(talk) 22:27, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to COVID-19, broadly construed, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. Thanks. All good. I think everything I've done is aligned with this and I'm glad this area gets extra scrutiny, it needs it! CT55555(talk) 15:47, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Draft:Pearleen Oliver

Hi CT5, want to take a crack at this one? S0091 (talk) 22:56, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Excellent, I'll have a go at that shortly. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Don't be surprised if it takes me a few weeks, but I'll fix it up. CT55555(talk) 23:46, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Awesome! I think it was created by someone participating in an edit-a-thon and they haven't been back since. I tagged it with "promising draft" which will keep it from deletion for a year so you (or anyone else) have plenty of time. S0091 (talk) 15:57, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
I've added several secondary sources and expanded the content. Ronald Caplan's wrote a whole book about her in 2020 Pearleen Oliver: Canada's Black Crusader for Civil Rights so I think that removes any doubts of her notability. Should I resubmit? CT55555(talk) 19:12, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
You can do that or go ahead and move it mainspace. I don't see a need for it to go through AfC but let me know either way what you decide to do. If AfC route, I would like to change the submitter to the creator, if you don't mind, before accepting so they get the notice or if you move it, leave the creator a note letting them know its now an article. Just so you know, there is no obligation a draft go through AfC even if previously declined. If you improve a draft or come across one you believe was erroneously declined (it happens...we are all humans), you are more than welcome to move them mainspace. Another option is to create a redirect which I have done for subjects that do not meet notability but are covered in another article or list. S0091 (talk) 20:11, 26 April 2023 (UTC)
