Username change

edit

Hi, I see here[1] that you marked as done the username change from User:Welsh Nationalism Foundation to User:Siluris on Dec 30, 2009. However, as of Jan 5, 2010, the new edits by this user show under the old name, User:Welsh Nationalism Foundation, see, for example, here[2]. Was there some kind of a technical problem with how the name change was done? Or is something else going on? Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 02:14, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Any updates on this? As of Jan 8, the user's new edits still show up in history logs under the old username, e.g. here[3]. Nsk92 (talk) 14:28, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

From the sky report, Peter Mandelson, who is widely credited with saving Mr Brown's leadership after an attempt to oust him last year, warned against "over-reacting" to the move.

"It is not led by members of the Government. No one has resigned from the Government," a spokesman for the Business Secretary said.

John Mann MP: 'This Attempt Has Got No Support'

"The Prime Minister continues to have the support of his colleagues and we should carry on government business as usual."

One of Mr Brown's closest Cabinet allies, Schools Secretary Ed Balls, told Sky News Mr Hewitt and Mr Hoon's attempt was a "damp squib".

"I have a lot of respect for Pat and Geoff but they're not speaking for the vast majority of the PLP and certainly not the Cabinet.

"The Cabinet is united behind Gordon Brown."

Children's Secretary Ed Balls: 'Cabinet Fully Behind Brown'

Health Secretary Andy Burnham also backed Mr Brown saying: "My support remains with the Prime Minister.

"I do not support the secret ballot."

He told Sky News that Mr Hoon and Ms Hewitt had "misread the mood" in the party.

Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward told Sky News he was "astonished" at the ex-ministers' attempt to create "a school-party debate".

And Mr Hoon's successor as Chief Whip, Nick Brown, said there was "no significant support for this unhelpful gesture from ex-ministers."

He added: "The whips are united behind the Prime Minister and the Cabinet." Off2riorob (talk) 16:46, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello Dweller. Thank you for semi-protecting the Actor article. The ongoing blanking is annoying and it will be nice to not have to deal with it for awhile. I noticed that you noted the semi-protection on the talk page but I was wondering if you wanted to put the protection template (the cute little lock) on the main page? If not don't worry about it and thanks again for taking care of this and happy editing. MarnetteD | Talk 15:29, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for the note. I spotted your comment at an IP talk page, which is what alerted me. I'm not a big fan of the padlock icon for semi protection - I think most IPs and new editors would either not see it or not know what it is - but if you'd like, there's nothing to stop you from adding it yourself! I certainly wouldn't take umbrage. Cheers. --Dweller (talk) 15:35, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think that you are right about it going unnoticed. Not only that but when the semi expires the icon often does not get removed. Cheers back at ya. MarnetteD | Talk 17:21, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unreferenced BLPs

edit

Hello Dweller! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 6 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 14 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Deleting/Restoring an article takes "only a few seconds"

edit

Re: the discussion on Tammy Jennings, while I can understand that deleting an article takes only a few seconds, I'd appreciate knowing how restoring a deleted article takes only a few seconds. How does one obtain the text of a deleted article? Thanks. cojoco (talk) 21:10, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

All admins can see the edit history of deleted articles. From that page, it's a simple matter to restore all or some of those revisions. It really does take just a moment. --Dweller (talk) 21:38, 19 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
This does seem a bit admin-centric. If a normal user creates an article, which later gets deleted, it is actually quite a lot of work for them to get it re-started again should the subject become notable again, especially including the amount of discussion that is likely to be necessary before anything happens. cojoco (talk) 05:25, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I do take your point, but in practice, a note to an admin is sufficient. WP:DRV is the bureaucratic option, but that's only needed to overturn an incorrect decision, not to restore an article which will be different because either circumstances have changed or a bunch of RS have been found. --Dweller (talk) 10:08, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Would you be able to recover the text of the deleted article Australian Protectionist Party which I created? I don't disagree with its deletion as it's definitely not notable, so it shouldn't be back in the article space, but I'd like to have some record of it in my sandbox, if that's OK. Thanks. cojoco (talk) 23:38, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sockpuppets

edit

See my post on User talk:Tnxman307. I've solved the sockpuppet puzzle for you and I've informed Wikipedia via Tnxman where all this goes from here. For the last two years I have had to put up with harrassment and defamation, not to mention an anonymous letter sent to my wife, when all I wanted to do was get on with writing about sports history. The so-called administrators on the site have been told more than once about the Daft/Tillman/Gall scenario and failed to take adequate action until I took matters into my own hands. As JH says on WT:CRIC, the whole thing stinks. --86.148.207.61 (talk) 07:40, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I would like to return the compliment to User:Eustress by nominating him as a sock puppet master but I don't seem be able to activate the process. I wonder if you would care to oblige? I have set up a temporary page at User talk:86.148.207.61 which contains my evidence including diffs. I think it just needs 86.148.207.61 to be replaced by Eustress in the two main headings.
By "sheer coincidence" I see his alter ego User:Derek.cashman retired from the site only yesterday. The main IP address used by Eustress/Cashman is 99.156.92.12 (see also the link below) and he has maliciously used others including 85.210.83.167, 88.109.8.46, 85.210.127.158 and 212.139.99.159.
I would point out that the evidence found by User:Nev1 and reported on WT:CRIC indicates that OM was never used maliciously, while DM was only introduced recently as a fresh start after the HughGal fiasco was brought to a climax. OM was itself a fresh start after my argument with Eustress in Dec 2008, which pissed me off completely at the time.
So, while I have used alternate accounts to "hide" or for a change of scene (per the two I temporarily had in 2006/7 or whenever), Eustress is using his other accounts maliciously and is acting out of pure spite. If you see the December 2008 edits on this page and look at this GAN review you will be able to follow Eustress easily enough to the point where he gave himself away by writing to WT:CRIC, though Nev1 deleted his post there.
For some more history, see this ANI topic.
Much obliged and sorry if my problems have caused you any problems. --86.148.207.61 (talk) 10:30, 30 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wikitables

edit

"Loathe" is a pretty strong word. As the one responsible for that new format, I'd appreciate more info in an attempt to improve it. Is it the visual format that gets you, or is it too complicated, or nonsensical...or? Thanks -  Frank  |  talk  13:29, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's not that particular one, it's all wikitables. They terrify me with their strange floating inexplicable | signs and random dashes. Of course, they're a necessary result of the shortcomings of wikimarkup (ie extraordinarily not userfriendly and very far from WISYWIG) but they are horrid for all but the most conversant in their use. --Dweller (talk) 13:33, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough assessment; that new format wasn't the easiest to devise. I hoped the use of a template for each row largely masked that but it's true I didn't put the wikimarkup for the row begin and end inside the template. On the other hand, I think it can be said that table formatting in HTML itself is no less dense but we do still manage to get some pretty complex things going, especially in footer templates all over the place here, so...whaddyagonnado? :-) Anyway, if you think of an improvement, I'd certainly like to hear it. Your comment was the first unsolicited one since I made that change months ago. The solicited ones were approving but I only asked a few folks.  Frank  |  talk  13:55, 8 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

"I would like to take the article History of logic to FA. I have already sought input from a number of contributors and have cleared up the issues raised (I am sure there are more). I wrote nearly all of the article using different accounts, as follows:

I would like to continue this work but I am frustrated by the zealous activity of User:Fram who keeps making significant reverts, and blocking accounts wherever he suspects the work of a 'banned user'. (Fram claims s/he doesn't understand "the people who feel that content is more important than anything else").

Can I please be left in peace with the present account to complete this work. It is already linked in the lead, does it still need linking in this section? I generally don't bother as there's lots that comes up a few times. But I could be wrong, so I thought I'd check! I intend on putting it up for FAC again. If you are carrying on with the copy edit (which would be very useful!), I'll wait till you're done (and I think YM is having another look too) and do another tidy up myself. I think it needs shortening, so I might take out some content to make new articles. If you have any other suggestions for it, apart from copy edits, I'd be glad to hear them. Shahidul Islam

edit

Hi. You (and then I) seem to have stumbled into a bit of edit warring over this unreffed cricket BLP. There's a journalist of the same name, which is why you couldn't find any cricket connection when you looked. I've now created a separate Shahidul Islam (cricketer) page, but fell foul of someone's bot when I tried to rename the journalist page as well. It can probably stay as I've left it, but I thought you with your admin hat on would be able to sort it if it's not quite right. Cheers. Johnlp (talk) 21:28, 8 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note (and work). I can't work out what happened but it looks OK now. Do you agree? --Dweller (talk) 10:25, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I think it's fine. Someone else with admin powers went in and tidied after I'd gone as far as I could, so it actually looks like a small oasis of logic now. The articles, mind you, are still pretty grim. But then someone who played one fc match in Bangladesh eight years ago is unlikely to be a priority, except to his mum. Thanks. Added the stats over the weekend, and now I think you've got at least a DYK-able article there, having been expanded by about a factor of eight. Not sure for featured though unless someone can get hold of a picture of him. Any ideas? Perhaps email him at school? The Rambling Man (talk) 10:09, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

DYK that Richard Ellison, became "an unlikely hero, with a white man's Afro" for "hooping the ball around corners" during the 1985 Ashes series? Or does it need to be more explanatory? --Dweller (talk) 14:25, 9 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mediation Case

edit

A request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning Genesis Creation Myth has been filed with the Mediation Committee (MedCom). You have been named as a party in this request. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Genesis Creation Myth and then indicate in the "Party agreement" section whether you would agree to participate in the mediation or not.

Mediation is a process where a group of editors in disagreement over matters of article content are guided through discussing the issues of the dispute (and towards developing a resolution) by an uninvolved editor experienced with handling disputes (the mediator). The process is voluntary and is designed for parties who disagree in good faith and who share a common desire to resolve their differences. Further information on the MedCom is at Wikipedia:Mediation Committee; the policy the Committee will work by whilst handling your dispute is at Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Policy; further information on Wikipedia's policy on resolving disagreements is at Wikipedia:Resolving disputes.

If you would be willing to participate in the mediation of this dispute but wish for its scope to be adjusted then you may propose on the case talk page amendments or additions to the list of issues to be mediated. Any queries or concerns that you have may be directed to an active mediator of the Committee or by e-mailing the MedCom's private mailing list (click here for details).

Please indicate on the case page your agreement to participate in the mediation within seven days of the request's submission.

Thank you, Weaponbb7 (talk)

I was considering changing my name to Eddie The Wonder Dog, but my brother stole the name and vandalized wikipiedia. Due to the fact he used my computer, my IP addrress was blocked including my user name and i was in trouble becuase people felt it might be Socket puppetry. Porcupine Mentorship

edit

Hello,

One of the editors that you were a mentor to some time ago [6] might be reverting back into the pre-mentorship state.

Could you look at his recent behavior with respect to user:Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ). There was a disagreement about something or other and then Porcupine|Treasury Tag started nominating user:Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) images for deletion and moved on to other rudeness and aggression [7], [8], [9], [10].

I'm not asking you to intervene, but could you compare his current behavior to the behavior that was responsible for the one month block he got before the mentorship [11] and if you think he is starting to go back to the dark side, could you leave him a note to remind him of the old days when he brought happiness, joy, love, and benevolence to Wikipedia?

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Lionel Wigram. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Proposed deletion of Lionel Wigram

The article Lionel Wigram has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Hello dude

edit

(a) No football speak (b) hope all is well in your universe (c) nice to see you here, albeit to edit Ipswich hero "Gunny"'s page! The Rambling Man (talk) 18:48, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi there. Nice to hear from you, too. I don't get much editing time these days :-( but Gunny's son, also a keeper, on NCFC's books, but playing for England - too juicy to omit! We've been playing some cracking stuff recently - I just hope no "big" clubs notice our manager is a bit of a genius. --Dweller (talk) 19:33, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Man alive, that's in a dreadful state. Suggest you tell Raul to axe it from TFA unless a major overhaul is finished within a fortnight... The Rambling Man (talk) 19:20, 9 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello old friend. Yes, I think that's a sensible idea. --Dweller (talk) 19:22, 9 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
You should see what I've been trying to do recently (recent contribs) – I've wasted an awful lot of my time here recently, so it's time for me to get back to improving article space! Can't wait. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:25, 9 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
What is all that geeky mediawiki space stuff? --Dweller (talk) 19:28, 9 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
