Discontent Content Issue 6
Welcome, subscribers, to the sixth Discontent Content newsletter! Discontent Content is a newsletter aiming to collate and improve Wikipedia articles in need of more eyes and hands to get them in shape. Its unique trimodal structure allows editors to work where they feel comfortable -- with stubs and starts needing to be brought to standard, mid-quality articles with Good or Featured potential, or quality-assessed articles needing help to maintain their status. Articles in this category are those that need to be brought up to a minimum quality standard. Some will be stubs; others will be longer articles that nonetheless have significant concerns putting them far below B- or C-class adequacy. This issue's Category 1 articles are:
Articles in this category, while in better current shape than Category 1, are still missing something. They have the potential to be truly high-quality content, and may have been at one point. With work, they can be brought up to dizzying heights. This issue's Category 2 articles are:
Articles in this category have been assessed through a content review process in the past, but may require work to be brought up to current GA/FA standard. Editors can help bring them to a level where the star or plus near their names can once again shine. This issue's Category 3 articles are:
After my prior thoughts on GA sweeps and their viability, work is beginning to break down what parts of the backlog can be tackled. Planning is beginning at User:Vaticidalprophet/GA reform and its talk; feel free to give your opinion, participate in current GARs, and assess articles. The current plan is to look at GAs with outstanding cleanup tags as our first priority. Sorry for the delay this time around -- I've been having A Month healthwise. I expect to maintain this at an approximately monthly schedule and will try not to let it slip further. I'm enthused by the work going on at GAR lately and hope to work something excellent out of it. |
Question from Rj binay on Talk:Budoff (13:46, 27 July 2021)
How to edit --Rj binay (talk) 13:46, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Rj binay: hello! I think Help:Editing might be able to help you. Do you have any particular questions? Elli (talk | contribs) 14:51, 27 July 2021 (UTC)
Problem
I was looking at the article for Medicaid, and I saw that the map showing states who have expanded Medicaid is outdated. The Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the state must expand Medicaid. I tried changing the picture myself, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. Would you mind doing it for me? Scorpions13256 (talk) 19:29, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
- Scorpions13256 it looks like you did it successfully, so it's probably just a caching issue on your end. Clear your cache and reload and it should be fine. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:36, 31 July 2021 (UTC)
Move review: Closing of the Requested move 14 June 2021
Hi, I saw that you closed this transfer request after a single contrary opinion (even outside the maximum time limit). I believe that the current name of that page is objectively wrong and that some opinions expressed before have not taken into account the real name of that party, nor the name used by the sources. So I asked for a new request to move and to date I have received only one opinion in favor of the move. The situation has stalled, so I have received the suggestion to start a move review. First I must therefore contact the closer of the first procedure, which is you. I'm not very familiar with this procedure, but I think it closed a little quickly. What should I do in this case? --Scia Della Cometa (talk) 19:58, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- Comment – As the nominator had provided valid reasoning as well as reliable sources and was unopposed, I initially intended to close the nominator’s second RM as 'moved'. But upon seeing that a clone RM, not a month earlier, had an objection and was closed as ‘not moved’, I abstained. However, I do agree with the nominator that your close was a bit premature (8 days following the nomination and only 1 day following the latest engagement) and, without offense, a single objection and a single supporting vote (the nomination) doesn't constitute a "consensus to not move". So I counseled the nominator to contact you (/initiate a WP:MR). Colonestarrice (talk) 20:34, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Scia Della Cometa and Colonestarrice: hi, thanks for both of your comments. I tend to close low-participation RMs where all the comments are the same way to get the backlog down - if you had replied to the comment there I likely would've relisted. If you asked me to undo my close at the time, I would've - the line between closing and relisting is often not clear. Anyway, since you've started another RM, taking the first one to move review now doesn't make sense - just wait for your second RM to be closed. I'd suggest advertising this RM neutrally to relevant wikiprojects to get more comments and a clearer consensus. Please feel free to ask if you have further questions/concerns! Elli (talk | contribs) 21:06, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, before we make this anymore complicated than necessary: @Andrewa: do you have any ongoing objections? If not, I will close this RM as 'moved'. Colonestarrice (talk) 21:44, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately I had not had time to respond to the user's contrary opinion and I had not asked you to undo your closure because I am not familiar with the procedures of en.wikipedia. Anyway I don't know how to advertise this RM. In the meantime, however, let's await the opinion of the other user. --Scia Della Cometa (talk) 21:48, 1 August 2021 (UTC)
- Scia Della Cometa no worries! If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask. Elli (talk | contribs) 23:22, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, and a request
Thanks for your help on the page I created for Phratora tibialis! I worked on the main Phratora page and I did a lot of editing of the pages for Phratora vitellinae and Phratora laticollis. I even added a bit of info and a picture to the Phratora purpurea page. The picture there was taken in Kalamazoo, where I found those beetles in 1991 and where I grew up. I wonder, how could I get the pages that I edited reviewed? It seems like new pages get noticed quickly, but existing ones that are edited aren't noticed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by NCalBeetleGuy (talk • contribs) 03:10, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
- @NCalBeetleGuy: awesome, thanks for all of your improvements. As for reviewed - new page patrol - which is what I do - only applies to new pages. If you'd like the ratings of pages you've edited updated on their talkpage, you can just do that yourself. If you'd like a more formal review process, you might want to look at either requesting a peer review, or nominating it for good article status, both of which involve review processes of your articles. Does that help? Elli (talk | contribs) 03:29, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Can you please create a template?
Hi Elli, hope you had a wonderful vacation. And now that you're back can you help me by creating a template that I can put in sections such as Alabama's 1st congressional district#Voting, which reads as "The district may have undergone boundary changes due to redistricting, and may not be reflective of the district's current geographical position." or something else that conveys the core message. I came across confused people, who are confused if the results are calculated on the basis of current map or just the results of the older map. Basically, the template must be something that works on mobile version too, since a lot of templates don't work there. I wanted to make something that could look similar to the {{See also}} template, on mobile devices. But I couldn't. Please make one if you know how to. Thanks! ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 16:54, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: sure - does {{see also}} not work on mobile devices? I thought it did...
- let me know because whether or not it does matters a bit (as to how I would code the template on the back-end). Elli (talk | contribs) 00:20, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Elli: {{See also}} works perfectly on mobile devices, that's why something similar should work. It's just that I was a bit overwhelmed by it's code, so I concluded that the work will be better done by experienced template editors. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 03:53, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
Page moves
Hello Elli. Just an FYI, when you move pages like 2021 Alberta referendum following an RM, you should also change any links to the page on templates that appear on that article (i.e. in this case {{AlbertaElections}}) – see Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions#Sidebars and navbars. Cheers, Number 57 11:39, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

DYK for 537 Votes
On 24 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 537 Votes, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that 537 Votes, documenting the controversial 2000 United States presidential election in Florida, was released in the run-up to the 2020 United States presidential election? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/537 Votes. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 537 Votes), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- @Smela07: you seem to be getting the hang of it - WP:TALKREPLY might help for some of the details (particularly how indentation works). Question from Gwhitlow (09:32, 31 August 2021)

- @Gwhitlow: hi! Do you have any questions about how to use/help with Wikipedia? Elli (talk | contribs) 15:31, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
Question from Gwhitlow on User talk:Elli (06:40, 1 September 2021)
I have an article to submit, already edited and submitted to Wikipedia editors, but I have no idea if I submitted it properly. Each time I check, it still requests to submit for review (blue box), which I thought I had already done. It's all of two paragraphs. --Gwhitlow (talk) 06:40, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwhitlow: you need to press the "submit" button, then scroll down and press the blue "Publish changes" button. When you do that, the draft will be submitted for review.
- Additionally, looking at your draft, it likely won't get accepted as you have not cited any sources. It's necessary to cite sources so all content in Wikipedia is verifiable. Can I recommend that you check out Wikipedia:Citing sources for information on the policy, and Help:Referencing for beginners to get you started? If you need any help with that, I can assist, of course. Elli (talk | contribs) 07:03, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Question from Gwhitlow on Draft:Gordon H. Whitlow (08:04, 1 September 2021)
Thank you, Elli. A bit confused, because when I do submit for review, the next thing I see is a large template page with many down arrows inside but none of my text. Below this it has the blue box "Publish changes". Now, I had received two acknowledgments ("Your notices") stating I had made my first edit and the other welcoming me to Wikipedia, so perhaps it is already under review. As for citations, there are several available, including existing Wiki pages created by others. --Gwhitlow (talk) 08:04, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwhitlow: the draft isn't submitted for review yet. You need to actually click "Publish changes", or else it won't be submitted. The UI for this isn't the best, but your draft will still be there, even though it doesn't show up in the box - just click the publish button and you'll see.
- As for sources, you need to edit your draft to include them. I'd recommend doing that before submitting for review, but it's up to you. Elli (talk | contribs) 08:06, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Question from Gwhitlow on User talk:Elli (08:09, 1 September 2021)
Thanks. Do I place the sources as URLs directly in the Publish box? I can easily do that. --Gwhitlow (talk) 08:09, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwhitlow: no - they go along with the article text. I strongly recommend reading Help:Referencing for beginners, it should be able to help you. Click the edit button on your draft, then click the "Cite" button from the toolbar, pick the type of citation you want, fill in the details, then add it. Save the page by pressing "publish changes". Elli (talk | contribs) 08:12, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Question from Gwhitlow on Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout (08:42, 1 September 2021)
I have added 6 references. After selecting "Publish changes", I received the following message: Draft article not currently submitted for review. This is a draft Articles for creation (AfC) submission. It is not currently pending review.", and another blue box below to "Submit the draft for review". Do I need to again submit for review? --Gwhitlow (talk) 08:42, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwhitlow: it looks like you eventually submitted it and it was declined - you need to improve the sources. significant coverage in reliable sources is what's necessary to show notability. Elli (talk | contribs) 12:46, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
Question from Gwhitlow on User talk:Elli (14:30, 1 September 2021)
I attempted to strengthen it with some published articles, etc., but I think I will need to change some of the citations to footnotes, as I think Fade was suggesting. --Gwhitlow (talk) 14:30, 1 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Gwhitlow: yes, I'd recommend that. Elli (talk | contribs) 14:36, 1 September 2021 (UTC)

- @Myeko Miso: hi, I'm not quite sure what you're asking. If you want a Wikipedia page about you, I would recommend against it, the relevant guideline strongly discourages writing about yourself.
- If you'd like to create a user page to help with collaboration with others, just go to User:Myeko Miso and start editing.
- Hope that helps! Feel free to ask any further questions. Elli (talk | contribs) 00:44, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Thank you!
Hello, Elli,
Thank you for tagging all of those hoax articles. I vaguely remember encountering this editor before, they created a lot of articles on American Horror Story seasons that hadn't aired yet. Have you run into them before, do they always edit as an IP or are they a blocked editor? Thanks again. Liz Read! Talk! 04:43, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: not sure - the first I saw of them was your mention of them on PMC's talkpage. I looked at their contributions and everything seemed to be a hoax, so tagged them. Thanks for deleting! Elli (talk | contribs) 04:44, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- Looking into them more closely, I see that some of these pages I deleted before in July 2021. It's an IP editor from Elk River, Minnesota and, in fact, yesterday we deleted a whole bunch of other articles they created about nonexistent TV series. But they seem to switch IP accounts with every other edit. NinjaRobotPirate created a range-block yesterday but we'll see if that stops them. Liz Read! Talk! 04:50, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: hopefully. I checked the whole /64... but in seeing that it looked like they'd edited some pages created by a different range... and that looks like another rabbit hole of hoax drafts (though some looked legitimate? what a mess) Elli (talk | contribs) 04:52, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Rcat standardization
Hey! I was wondering where are you at with your User:Elli/rcat standardization project. I was researching something related to see how section ids and anchor ids are generated and it would seem that by checking the target ID, the template can determine if the target is a section ({{R to section}}) or anchor ({{R to anchor}}). DYK for The Presidential Vote, 1896–1932
On 12 September 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Presidential Vote, 1896–1932, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that as documented in The Presidential Vote, 1896–1932, fewer than a quarter of the United States' counties voted for the same party in every presidential election from 1896 to 1932? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Presidential Vote, 1896–1932. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The Presidential Vote, 1896–1932), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
Hello Elli,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.
To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:31, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Vandolizm
Someone vandalized on Georgia's senate election 2020 (Raphael Warnock and Kelly Loeffler) i tried reverting it but its too much. Can you help? also he vandalized the one With David Perdue and Jon Ossoff, but i could fix that one. Trenton 1214 (talk) 22:07, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Trenton 1214: I'm not seeing any vandalism on the page. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:24, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Trenton 1214: I did notice a major change to the infobox - I undid that, but it was not vandalism. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:25, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Editing
Also sorry about what happened on the recall page. I was trying to add John H. Cox, but I realized that it removed the whole first part of the article. So I tried to reverse it. But you already did it. Trenton 1214 (talk) 22:32, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
I saw John H. Cox on the Washington post. So I got my information from there Trenton 1214 (talk) 22:33, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Trenton 1214: no worries. You inserted nowiki tags for some reason. Also, generally candidates shouldn't be in an infobox unless they got >5% per a long-standing consensus at WikiProject Elections and Referendums. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:34, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Question from LibrarianAtLarge (22:28, 18 September 2021)
Hi, Elli: I created an article for an individual who I thought merited one. This person already had a redirect page. Should have done something with the redirect page rather than creating an entirely new article? I've included links below. Thanks very much for your help. Melissa
REDIRECT PAGE: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Josh_Kiszka&redirect=no
MY ARTICLE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Josh_Kiszka --LibrarianAtLarge (talk) 22:28, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- (Talk page enjoyer) Hi LibrarianAtLarge! What you've done here is entirely okay – because your article is a draft waiting to be reviewed, we want the redirect to stay there so that people will be redirected to Greta Van Fleet until there is a mainspace article about Josh Kiszka. If/when your draft is moved to mainspace, it will replace the redirect. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 23:27, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
- @LibrarianAtLarge: hi - ezlev's answer here is right - just wait for a review and if accepted the draft will be moved over the redirect. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me! Elli (talk | contribs) 00:58, 19 September 2021 (UTC)

PRODS
Hello, Elli,
Could you pace yourself on tagging articles as PRODs? Right now, there are 137 tagged PRODs expiring next Monday and they each have to be evaluated by an admin. There are only two or three admins who regularly patrol these categories every day and there are typically only 15-30 PRODs expiring each day so this is a big increase. If there are any more pages to tag, please wait a day to do the remainder. Thank you! Liz Read! Talk! 19:29, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: thanks for the message - I was PRODing very similar articles by the same user, so I figured it shouldn't be too much trouble for each of them to be evaluated. I was divided between this and doing a mass AfD, but as I felt the AfD would be unlikely to be contested, I chose to PROD (also, mass AfD isn't really a great procedure to start with). I've tagged about a third of the articles, I think, and I'll be happy to wait for a day to tag the rest (and probably split over the next few days) if that would make things easier. Sorry for any inconvenience! Elli (talk | contribs) 19:32, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Rhode island turnout
Hello, I hope you are having a great day. I have a quick question about RI. 2020 presidential turnout. Is the turnout supposed to have 7.4pp after the arrow to show you an increase from 2016 election turnout? Because the 2016 election had that for the 2012 election. RonMcDonald721 (talk) 22:53, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- @RonMcDonald721: that seems appropriate. Also, the turnout should probably have a source, currently it isn't sourced anywhere in the article. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:57, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
Okay, thank you. I just wanted to know because it didn't look normal RonMcDonald721 (talk) 23:01, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
Ok, so I added 7.6pp, but I'm not going to put a source down because I don't know where to get one. RonMcDonald721 (talk) 23:10, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
Is that okay? RonMcDonald721 (talk) 23:18, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- @RonMcDonald721: sure, you didn't really add any content, you only performed a routine calculation - in general when you add content you should cite a source though (so the person who added the turnout numbers, in this case). Elli (talk | contribs) 23:28, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi. What you did to Maciste All'Inferno makes no sense to me. I see lots of refs using it either with all uppercase initials ("Maciste All'Inferno"), or with lowercase, Maciste all'inferno. But I can't find refs using the mixed casing you applied to the page. Please revert your changes. —capmo (talk) 20:19, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- Campo, hi, I didn't notice the capitalization of the I. Because the majority of entries are spelled with lowercase, I'd suggest moving it to the all-lowercase version. Feel free to do this - or I'll do it in a few hours when I get back to my computer. Thanks for your message and sorry for the inconvenience! Elli (talk | contribs) 20:34, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
- No problem! I agree with your suggestion that the all-lowercase version is the best place for the dab. Since it was created by me yesterday, I thought there should be no problem in moving its contents to Maciste all'inferno instead of yet another page move that would involve deleting the target page. Edit warring
You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.
Please be particularly aware that Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:
- Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made.
- Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.
If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing.
Please don't start edit wars across multiple articles. If you have sources to back up your claims please present them on talk. -69.121.9.199 (talk) 08:33, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Editnotices
Hello, Elli,
Before deleting all of these pages that you tagged for uncontroversial deletion, I'd like to see that you notified or spoke to Oshwah about this. It doesn't look like you have. They aren't technically User pages but they do concern his Userspace. Liz Read! Talk! 01:15, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: I was planning on notifying him, thought I'd do the tagging first. He last edited four days ago, though, and I highly doubt he would mind. He originally intended to use a group notice but that didn't work - the reason being he didn't create Template:Editnotices/Group/User:Oshwah with
{{editnotice subpages|TalkPageArchives}}
(that is pretty unintuitive so I don't blame him). I figured since that was his original intent, and the display of the editnotice would not change at all, that he would not mind, and tagging these for speedy deletion would save time compared to taking them to, say, TfD. Elli (talk | contribs) 01:18, 19 October 2021 (UTC)- Okay, I appreciate your speedy response. I know he had a recent move and hasn't been as active on Wikipedia lately. Besides my concern, I just had a general reaction of "What is up with all of these pages?" and wondered if it was another Cluebot mistake but no, Oshwah created these pages. Liz Read! Talk! 01:22, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Liz: yeah, I know he's been busy lately. And yeah I could see why you might be surprised - I'm working on a decent sized standardization-and-cleanup of editnotices - there's a lot of stuff like this, where people didn't realize what they wanted to do could be accomplished more simply. I really appreciate your work dealing with the g6s that result! Elli (talk | contribs) 01:25, 19 October 2021 (UTC)

I'm not asking because I think it isn't – I'm just genuinely not sure. Thanks so much! ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 05:23, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Ezlev: I would generally say that's appropriate - in some cases it can be split out to a separate article, like Electoral history of Andrew Cuomo, but that doesn't look necessary to me. Elli (talk | contribs) 14:33, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
