Orphan tag for Qorivva and Hercules (processors)

Does the orphan tag mean “Zero articles link to it” or “too few articles link to it”?

• One article and now a template link to Qorivva
• One article and now a disambiguation link to Hercules (processors)

As the ISO 26262 technology has increased presence on Wikipedia, more links should be made, such as the microcontrollers listed under See also. This (cross referencing) is my intention to help make happen when I have the opportunity; however I think such links should be collected under one or more list articles.

Nah, as per the criteria, an article is orphaned if no other articles link to it. Tagging is recommended when the articles have ZERO incoming links. AWB detected Qorivva and Hercules (processors) as orphans and I tagged them; if they are no more orphans, then the tags should be removed. Faizan 08:36, 21 February 2014 (UTC)

They each had at least one link to start with. A bot came through and removed the orphan tag for us.

Also, if AWB automatically reformats the dates that the editor's cite template tool automatically inserts, then either the cite tool or AWB should be change -- presently the to have different date formats. IveGoneAway (talk) 14:05, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Carmelo Zito

I noticed you added an orphan tag to Carmelo Zito. I left a message on the talk page on the subject. Clearly you left the tag because you can not see the reference to the article about Carmelo Zito in the Italian Americans article on Wikipedia. We created his article with a link to Italian Americans, but due to some "mistake" this link was removed. I tried to put it back, but it does not take, so I invite you to go to the article on Italian Americans then look under newspapers and find the link and replace it yourself, since my edit is not taking. I have been in the past able to create a hyperlink on other subjects such as linking Lynn Samuels back to herself in other articles. But, now the article is frozen and my changes are not taking.Apriv40dj (talk) 14:27, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Well yes, I added the tag as the article had no incoming links from other articles on the encyclopedia. But now, as I can see that Italian Americans links to it. So the article is not an orphan any more and the tag ought to be removed. Besides, the addition of orphan tag was not related to the dispute. Faizan 14:55, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Incorrect orphan tags

In the Wikipedia glossary, an orphan is defined as "an article with no links from other pages in the main article namespace". You have just tagged Leptasterias muelleri as an orphan, an article I created on 20th February and which has two incoming links. Similarly, on 20th February you tagged as an orphan Pteria penguin, an article I created on 16th February which had 2 incoming links at the time (it now has 3). When I write an article I always ensure that it has incoming links and I do not much care to see the articles being tagged as orphans unnecessarily. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 06:25, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

My regrets, maybe it is an AWB false-positive, because it detected both of them as orphans. Anyhow, as evident from [1][2], the articles are not orphans and the tags should simply be removed. My Best regards. Faizan 06:35, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

That's OK. Perhaps the false-positives were something to do with the fact that they were newly created articles and the system had not had time to catch up. I notice, for example, that where a new article has equivalent articles in other language Wikipedias, it takes a couple of days for a bot to get round to adding the languages. Hey how are you Faizan? I was hoping that I would be able to get another opinion, just to be sure that I am correct. It has to do with a subject that is related to Pakistan, and furthermore it seems that you are from there. :) Am I allowed to mention the page at all? Sorry, wrong word of choice; no third opinion as there is no discussion about this. The topic is Allahabad_Address that is being rewritten as "Pakistan Concept". After having read the entire cited source and doing some research I have also found on page 178 to 183, especially page 182 on Tinderbox: The Past and Future of Pakistan By M.J. Akbar[3] to be quite the contrary. There is also a supposedly a 1932 address in which it was written in the paper? (not sure how credible it is) that he did not want a separate country but an autonomous province within India. Going to run as Canada is playing for Gold :) ... WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
2. Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
3. WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

• Hahc21 (submissions), who helped take Thirty Flights of Loving through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
• Prism (submissions), who claimed the first featured list of the competition with Natalia Kills discography.
• Cwmhiraeth (submissions), who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance salamander, now a good article, scored 108 points.

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

Neville Chamberlain is a featured article. It is OK there. The ref-improve tag in Joseph Chamberlain cannot be removed still as there are many sections which are not referenced. Martineau family is OK. Faizan 06:23, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

VisualEditor newsletter—March 2014

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor team has mostly worked on changes to the template and image dialogs.

The biggest change in the last few weeks was the redesign of the template dialog. The template dialog now opens in a simplified mode that lists parameters and their descriptions. (The complex multi-item transclusion mode can be reached by clicking on "Show options" from inside the simplified template dialog.) Template parameters now have a bigger, auto-sizing input box for easier editing.  With today's update, searching for template parameters will become case-insensitive, and required template parameters will display an asterisk (*) next to their edit boxes. In addition to making it quicker and easier to see everything when you edit typical templates, this work was necessary to prepare for the forthcoming simplified citation dialog. The main priority in the coming weeks is building this new citation dialog, with the ultimate goal of providing autofill features for ISBNs, URLs, DOIs and other quick-fills. This will add a new button on the toolbar, with the citation templates available picked by each wiki's community. Concept drawings can be seen at mw:VisualEditor/Design/Reference Dialog. Please share your ideas about making referencing quick and easy with the designers.

• The link tool now tells you when you're linking to a disambiguation or redirect page. Pages that exist, but are not indexed by the search engine, are treated like non-existent pages (T56361).
• Wikitext warnings will now hide when you remove wikitext from the paragraph you are editing.
• The character inserter tool in the "Insert" menu has been slightly redesigned, to introduce larger buttons. Your suggestions for more significant changes to the special character inserter are still wanted.
• The page options menu (three bars, next to the Cancel button) has expanded. You can create and edit redirect pages, set page options like __STATICREDIRECT__, __[NO]INDEX__ and __[NO]NEWEDITSECTION__, and more.  New keyboard shortcuts are listed there, and include undoing the last action, clearing formatting, and showing the shortcut help window. If you switch from VisualEditor to wikitext editing, your edit will now be tagged.
• It is easier to edit images. There are more options and they are explained better. If you add new images to pages, they will also be default size.  You can now set image sizes to the default, if another size was previously specified. Full support for upright sizing systems, which more readily adapt image sizes to the reader's screen size, is planned.
• VisualEditor adds fake blank lines so you can put your cursor there. These "slugs" are now smaller than normal blank lines, and are animated to be different from actual blank lines.
• You can use the Ctrl+Alt+S or ⌘ Command+⌥ Option+S shortcuts to open the save window, and you can preview your edit summary when checking your changes in the save window.
• After community requests, VisualEditor has been deployed to the Interlingual Occidental Wikipedia, the Portuguese Wikibooks, and the French Wikiversity.
• Any community can ask for custom icons for their language in the character formatting menu (bold, italic, etc.) by making a request on Bugzilla or by contacting Product Manager James Forrester.

The developers apologize for a regression bug with the deployment on 6 March 2014, which caused the incorrect removal of |upright size definitions on a handful of pages on the English Wikipedia, among others. The root cause was fixed, and the broken pages were fixed soon after.

Looking ahead:  Several template dialogs will become more compact. Looking further out, the developers are also working on support for viewing and editing hidden HTML comments. You will be able to see the Table of Contents change live as you edit the page, rather than it being hidden. In-line language setting (dir="rtl") may be offered to a few Wikipedias soon.

WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! We need your help testing latest huggle

Hello,

I am sending you this message because you listed yourself on meta:Huggle/Members as a beta tester. We desperately need attention of testers, because since we resolved all release blockers, we are ready to release first official version of huggle 3! Before that happens, it would be nice if you could test it so that we can make sure there are no issues with it. You can download it packaged for your operating system (see Wikipedia:Huggle/Huggle3_Beta) or you can of course build it yourself, see https://github.com/huggle/huggle3-qt-lx for that. Don't forget to use always latest version, there is no auto-update message for beta versions!

Should you find any issue, please report it to wikimedia bugzilla, that is a central place for huggle bugs, where we look at them. That is i mportant, if you find a bug and won't report it, we can't fix it.
