Template:Cite AV media

- Yes! I have one suggestion though, in regards to Template:Citation Style documentation#Section usage, the 'Description' section should really be changed to be in order of the way it is in the template. E.g., 'Anchor', which is the 'ref', makes more sense at the end, as it is at that place in most of the 'cite' templates. In fact, the way the sections are ordered in the further below "Parameters section" on that page, is following the template code order, and not the order described under 'Section usage'. I feel some consistency would be helpful, because the order described on that page in the 'Section usage' part, and the order actually used in the 'Parameters section' are contradictory; thus, the confusion. Happy New Year, Gadget850. Though I know you've worked so much in templates, in the case of {{cite AV media}} I think it suffices to show only ONE shortcut, {{cite media}} with {{template shortcut}} rather than showing many; a tidy, well chosen display facilitates to remember. (This view is shared in Template talk:Template shortcut#Expand? by User:David Göthberg.) I'm not sure if it's better to list many redirects in "Aliases" section; some are unused at all, and others are purely historical. For example, {{wiktionary}} has this many aliases, but many are useless from practical viewpoint.
Obviously you don't have to delete (old) template aliases, but at the same time it's better to keep them well organized. See for example {{Wiktionary templates common doc}} which is a part of the docs of {{wt}}, {{wtr}} etc. (I created most of these shortcuts and the table recently, but it may be an excess, I know. Let's see what will happen. Wikipedia is still in its cradle.)

- Upon reflection, the box is not listing shortcuts, but redirects, thus {{template redirects}} is more appropriate. But we don't need to know what redirects to a template, so I have removed all and deleted the template.--— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:25, 5 January 2013 (UTC)
Ok, but as pointed out at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2012_December_10#Template:Cite_video by User:delldot, the shortcut {{cite media}} is nice; fairly general and descriptive, yet easy to remember and use, so I re-added it to {{cite AV media/doc}} with {{template shortcut}}.
At the same time, {{template shortcut}} is sometimes used to show long but good aliases. (I can't cite a good example here, but in Japanese Wikipedia, templates imported from English Wikipedia often have a Japanese name, and the original name as redirects. In those cases, it's good to show English aliases, which are not necesarily short.) If you know some such examples too, changing the text "shortcut:" in the box of {{template shortcut}} to "aliases:" may be good. But it's probably better to propose first at the talk page than discussing here between two of us. Thanks anyway. --Ahora (talk) 06:11, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

- It does no harm, but it is redundant and it leads to reuse. I have cleaned up a handful, but a bot would be more thorough and efficient. See Template talk:Lang#xml:lang is now redundant for my original discussion. I noticed it was no longer whitelisted at
Sanitizer.php

Hello again from the Help Project! In the last newsletter (which was quite a while ago sorry!) I talked about my fellowship and the plans for improving the main portal page, Help:Contents. Well I'm sad to say that my fellowship is now over, but very happy to say that the proposed improvements to that page have been completed and implemented. Do check it out if you haven't already. Another important and frequently used help page, Wikipedia:Contact us, has also seen a significant revamp. You may recognise the design inspiration from the new tutorial pages. In project news, we now have a subscription to the "article alerts" service. Any deletion nominations, move discussions, or requests for comments on pages within the Help Project's scope will now show up at Wikipedia:Help Project/Article alerts. So that's definitely a page which project members might want to watch. Any comments or suggestions for future issues are welcome at Wikipedia:Help Project/Newsletter. Dress uniform
In 2007, this image was removed, File:BSA scouter dress uniform.jpg from this page, Uniform and insignia of the Boy Scouts of America#Scouter dress uniform because it was "Replaceable fair use." WikiCup 2013 February newsletter
Round 1 is now over. The top 64 scorers have progressed to round 2, where they have been randomly split into eight pools of eight. At the end of April, the top two from each pool, as well as the 16 highest scorers from those remaining, will progress to round 3. Commiserations to those eliminated; if you're interested in still being involved in the WikiCup, able and willing reviewers will always be needed, and if you're interested in getting involved with other collaborative projects, take a look at the WikiWomen's Month discussed below.
Round 1 saw 21 competitors with over 100 points, which is fantastic; that suggests that this year's competition is going to be highly competative. Our lower scores indicate this, too: A score of 19 was required to reach round 2, which was significantly higher than the 11 points required in 2012 and 8 points required in 2011. The score needed to reach round 3 will be higher, and may depend on pool groupings. In 2011, 41 points secured a round 3 place, while in 2012, 65 was needed. Our top three scorers in round 1 were:
- Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), primarily for an array of warship GAs.
- Miyagawa (submissions), primarily for an array of did you knows and good articles, some of which were awarded bonus points.
- Casliber (submissions), due in no small part to Canis Minor, a featured article awarded a total of 340 points. A joint submission with Keilana (submissions), this is the highest scoring single article yet submitted in this year's competition.
Other contributors of note include:
- Sven Manguard (submissions), whose Portal:Massachusetts is the first featured portal this year. The featured portal process is one of the less well-known featured processes, and featured portals have traditionally had little impact on WikiCup scores.
- Sasata (submissions), whose Mycena aurantiomarginata was the first featured article this year.
- Muboshgu (submissions) and Wizardman (submissions), who both claimed points for articles in the Major League Baseball tie-breakers topic, the first topic points in the competition.
- Toa Nidhiki05 (submissions), who claimed for the first full good topic with the Casting Crowns studio albums topic.
Featured topics have still played no part in this year's competition, but once again, a curious contribution has been offered by The C of E (submissions): did you know that there is a Shit Brook in Shropshire? With April Fools' Day during the next round, there will probably be a good chance of more unusual articles...
March sees the WikiWomen's History Month, a series of collaborative efforts to aid the women's history WikiProject to coincide with Women's History Month and International Women's Day. A number of WikiCup participants have already started to take part. The project has a to-do list of articles needing work on the topic of women's history. Those interested in helping out with the project can find articles in need of attention there, or, alternatively, add articles to the list. Those interested in collaborating on articles on women's history are also welcome to use the WikiCup talk page to find others willing to lend a helping hand. Another collaboration currently running is an an effort from WikiCup participants to coordinate a number of Easter-themed did you know articles. Contributions are welcome!
A few final administrative issues. From now on, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! The Old Hickory council did not integrate until 1974. You seem to be following behind me and changing my edits. I caught it with this edit and was going to let it slide. I just thought it was a waste of your time as well as mine. Then I came across this edit, where you actually broke the shortcut category by using uppercase letters. Gadget850, don't you even check your edits to see if they do what you want them to do? Now you need to go back and check your recent edits to see if you've broken anything else. And please explain why you feel the need to alter my edits. Do you have some wasteful intent to unpopulate the Redirects to sections cat in favor of the Redirects to anchors cat? – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 06:06, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
- I just fix stuff on my watchlist; I have no idea what you do elsewhere. I checked each one as I updated; I rechecked Wikipedia:REFGROUP and it is working. Let's look at that one: someone before you changed it from the anchor to a direct link, but I didn't catch it at the time. The linked page includes a {{shortcut}} template which creates an anchor: in this case named WP:REFGROUP. When you create the redirect, you should link to the shortcut anchor, not the section name. If the section is renamed (which happens), the shortcut anchor remains the same and the link still works. You edit wasn't broken, but linking to the {{shortcut}} anchor is more robust. - I see your POV, however it really makes no sense to me to alter a perfectly good shortcut that works. If a header is changed in the future, then those who change it need to learn to anchor the old header in order to not break links to the section, to include shortcut links. In my opinion anchoring the shortcut to the shortcut is just one more reason for editors who change section headers to fail to anchor the old section names.
- But all that aside, what this is really about is your changing several of my recent edits without letting me know what you think I'm doing wrong. If I'm doing something wrong, then I need to know it so I'll stop doing it. When you come behind me and change my edits like that, it makes me feel like it's a waste of time to make the edits in the first place. See if you go for this, Gadget850... I've been catting redirects gnomishly for some time, now. The vast majority of the shortcuts I find that go somewhere besides the TOP go to section headers, and the vast majority of those are not pointed at a shortcut anchor, but to the section header itself. Every once in awhile I come across shortcuts that go to embedded anchors where there were no section headers. Someone occasionally uses the semicolon for headers
- like this line that begins with a semicolon in the code.
For those, I never hesitated to cat them with {{R to anchor}}. Up to now, just so there would be standardization, when I came across a shortcut that targeted an anchor that was also to a section header, I would alter the redirect to target the section header. A few minutes ago I came across one like that, and rather than alter the target, I just slapped the {{R to anchor}} Rcat on it and kept going. That's what I'll do from now on, since it's faster and works just as well. I hope that meets with your approval, and you won't feel you have to alter any more of my edits. My main thrust here is to improve Wikipedia without wasting a lot of time on edits that will be almost immediately altered by another contributor. Girl Scouts
Gadget850 - Yesterday I thought I would help with disambiguation so I went to the disambiguation page and randomly picked Girl Scouts. I spent an hour reviewing all the groups on that page and then I checked some of the articles that linked to Girl Scouts. About 95% of the links to Girl Scouts were looking for an organization NOT on the Girl Scouts disambiguation page. What they were looking for, of course, was the Girl Scouts of the USA. Now I had read the talk page and I saw your comment about not putting the individual national organizations on the Girl Scouts disambiguation page, but, I decided you were wrong. And I put the Girl Scouts of the USA on the page. You have reverted me. I have become BOLDER and have now made the correction to the page I should have made in the beginning. What do you think? Palmares
I really need some help, and it seems like you your right person to ask. I want to add the same column options used in {{Refbegin}}
for {{Palmares start}}
, so it can be set like this {{Refbegin|3}}
or {{Refbegin|30em}}
. The default is two columns and there is another parameter for a source. The problem is that when viewed on a small screen (mobile) the lines split and it becomes impossible to read. I've set up a sandbox and the appropriate testcases. Hopefully you can help me out, as I'm struggling. If you can't, could you point me in the right direction. Cheers. I saw your feedback at the help desk about using the {{mem}} template for the notable alumni list at Hollywood High School. That's pretty damn cool. Unfortunately, though, I didn't see your comment until long after I had already spent hours creating a collapsible table using the method advised by the other admin (Yunshui). That page you referred me to even has a section specifically about using the template "For lists of notable alumni"! You're very good; I'll bet there aren't too many editors who even know about. Anyway, I used the method Yunshui explained at the help desk and the table looks very similar to your way. I created three columns (Name/Class year/Notability), but now I'm not sure (after seeing your template) if there will be any problems with the way I did it. If you see anything wrong with it, please feel free to make any fixes. Of course, the sole problem which prompted me to go to the help desk in the first place was the excessive length of the list; it was just overwhelming the article because it was so incredibly long compared to the rest the article. So as long as the table is collapsed by default, I'll be happy with whatever template is used. So again, if anything needs changed, I won't mind one bit if you do it. In fact, I'd appreciate it because I'm sure that's easily the biggest notable alumni list of any high school article. Anyway, thanks a lot for educating me on that mem template. Cite ship register template redux
I want to revisit a topic we breifly discussed earlier this year.
Today I added {{cite ship register}}
to the list of templates that use citaion/core because it does. As part of that I reread Help:Citation Style 2. That document says that CS2 citations are based on {{citation}}
which seems to be born out by the other templates in Category:Citation Style 2 templates. {{Cite ship register}}
is not based on {{citation}}
so isn't it now mis-categorized?
Doesn't {{cite ship register}}
really belong in Category:Citation Style 1 specific-source templates.

Notability question
Evrik (talk · contribs) is un-merging a large number of local councils into their own articles because state wide articles cannot support individual logos. My question is do the individual council articles pass the general notability guide? For example I have no clue why Pacific Skyline Council should have its own article. I’ll stay here until Gadget850 kicks me out. ;-) Seriously though, Gadget mentioned earlier that he is not a fan of the long state article, and back in 2006, neither was I. I had just started the long project of trying to clean-up all the state pages when I was sidetracked by the discussion on the images. I disagree that the smaller articles lack independent notability. I think each of these articles has a lot more potential, and are not like the List of Characters from X, because of the 100 year history of scouting. They have had an impact on their community. Maybe by breaking them apart they will flourish?
- Listing references to the debates won't get us anywhere as I disagree on the premise that the article is a list. I think the long state articles are ugly, but they are not necessarily lists. Now that all the content has been stripped out of Scouting in California, it's a list. Really though, this only affects the larger state articles, and not the smaller state articles. Hi, I know little about templates, but this edit would seem to change the sense of what the page is talking about. The examples seem to outline indents, not citations. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation. - VisualEditor news:
- VisualEditor was temporarily disabled on Wikipedia sites on June 14 due to an issue that inserted a lot of HTML code. The issue is now fixed and VisualEditor works as before.
- Users can now use VisualEditor to add images and other media items from their local wikis and Wikimedia Commons. [6].
- VisualEditor also allows editing references. [7]
- The new Disambiguator extension, which was previously part of MediaWiki itself, was enabled on test wikis. It adds the magic word

Sandbox deletion??
I got an email a while ago telling me that my sandbox had been deleted. Following the link in the email, I arrived at an empty sandbox that had the following notification:
"This page has been deleted. The deletion and move log for the page are provided below for reference. 19:18, 17 June 2013 Gadget850"
However, after I signed in I went to the sandbox and everything looks normal (i.e. nothing gone that I hadn't removed myself).

A big problem with efn template

TfD consensus to keep fast-cite templates
The following fast-cite templates were discussed at wp:TfD, and the community consensus was to Keep those templates, with some marked as historical:
- {{Cite quick}}
- {{Cite fast}}
- {{Fcite}}, {{Fcite book}}, {{Fcite fast}}, {{Fcite journal}}, {{Fcite web}}
All of those templates were closed at wp:TfD as Keep. Those templates must remain where they are, per the results of community consensus. See for example, Template:Cite_quick which outperforms the Lua-based cites (of Module:Citation/CS1), in allowing more than 2x (twice) as many citations per page:
There is no consensus to either delete them, or userfy them, to reduce access or mislead users into thinking those templates were not used in many mainspace articles. Those templates are used in many prior revisions of several major articles and are needed to support the formatted display of those prior revisions, as they appeared at the time. - VisualEditor deployment has been delayed by a week. It is now planned to enable the editor for logged–in editors on chosen Wikipedias on July 22, and on all Wikipedias on July 29.
- A bug that made it impossible to save VisualEditor edits that triggered a CAPTCHA has been fixed. [15]
- Several bugs that occurred on right–to–left wikis have been fixed last week (bug #49416, bug #49613, bug #50543).

Hello from Hong Kong, and the Wikimania DevCamp! Just a quick bulletin to update everyone on recent goings-on:
- There was a Wikimedia blog post about our experience at the Open Help Conference.
- Based on discussions at the Open Help Conference, Seeeko, Ocaasi and the wub have drafted a series of guidelines for writing and improving help pages.
- There is now also a system in place for assessing help pages by quality and importance. See Wikipedia:Help Project/Assessment for more details and the two scales we are using.
- A project collaboration has been started, the first one is focusing on the above mentioned Assessment. Discussions about this are welcome at Wikipedia talk:Help Project#Current collaboration (and the next).
- Wikipedia:New contributors' help page/questions was merged into Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions
- A couple of other mergers have been proposed:
- Help:Introduction to talk pages and Help:Introduction to policies and guidelines have both been overhauled and updated to use the new tutorial design.

Problems fixed
- There was a bug where file redirects didn't work when a file was renamed; it is now fixed. There is still an issue with purging, but it should be fixed soon. (52200)
- Maintenance reports provided by special pages will now all be updated on each wiki every six months. This will for example give you recent information on uncategorized pages, unused templates and most wanted pages (see details).
- There was a bug that caused false positives for anti-blanking edit filters; it is now fixed. (52077) [55]

- The "edit" and "edit source" tabs and section edit links can now be changed more easily; for example, some wikis are using "edit source" for wikitext editing, and "edit beta" for VisualEditor. You can ask for the same change in bugzilla.

- The conversation has been fading, but someone is going to notice that all of a sudden,

is no longer including the link note. Once they do, then isn't it pretty much a done deal? The conversation devolved into a discussion about tangentially related topics – there is relatively little about the parameter and the link note and nothing, as far as I can tell, saying that we must keep|via=
with the link note. I would guess that if we do nothing, no one will complain.

Of course our citations are important because our content is only as good as the references. That means the work you do extremely important to enwp. You're right, it is a thankless job and it's definatley under-appreciated, but it's probably the most important work that happens on the project. I am very thankful for all the thousands of hours you have donated to the project over these many long years. Your work has been immensely valuable as noted by the well-respected editors commenting here. Please do take a break if it will help, but I do hope you will come back to citation work in the future. There are so few people doing it that the loss of an expert such as yourself would be a significant loss for enwp and its readers. Thanks for all your great work. - Special:Listfiles can now display old versions of files a user has uploaded. A new link was also added (Special:AllMyFiles) that gives a list of all files the current user has ever uploaded (that haven't been deleted).

Chip Chocolate, an alias of Jesse Wellens, had a UK #68 hit with Cookie Dance, which causes him to pass WP:MUSICBIO criterion #2. VisualEditor news
- You will soon be able to switch from editing in VisualEditor to editing wikitext directly without having to save the page. You can't yet switch from wikitext to VisualEditor but developers hope to make it possible in the future. [81]

- There was a problem on October 31 during the activation of MediaWiki 1.22wmf2 on test wikis. mediawiki.org was also broken, and if you had problems logging in, it was probably because of this as well.

JavaScript / Gadget developers

- You can now use the "Autonym" font of the Universal Language Selector (ULS) to display the name of languages (for example in navigation templates) in their correct script. To do this, add the CSS class
"autonym"

Problems
- There was a problem with Parsoid (the program used by VisualEditor to convert wikitext to annotated HTML) on November 4, between 19:40 and 20:40 (UTC). Encoding issues caused non-ASCII characters (including those with diacritics, like "é") to be broken when converted to wikitext and saved to the page. [85]

- The Beta Features announced before are now available on all Wikimedia wikis. You can test new features easily by changing your Beta preferences. VisualEditor is one of those features on sites where it works and isn't automatically enabled. There is also a new media viewer and changes in the article text style. [92]
- Tools developers can now create tools that use the OAuth protocol to connect to accounts on Wikimedia sites. As a user, you can use those tools to make edits and other changes with your account without giving the tool your password. [93]

Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf8) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on December 19. It will be enabled on non-Wikipedia wikis on December 31 and on all Wikipedia wikis on January 2, 2014 (calendar).
- You can now test the new search tool ("CirrusSearch") on all Wikisource, Wiktionary and Wikimedia chapter wikis hosted on Foundation servers. Enable "New search" in your Beta features preferences. [115]
- There was a bug where notifications were not sent when the signature of the user leaving the message linked to a translated namespace. The problem was fixed in the software and will soon be fixed on Wikimedia sites. [116] [117]
- You can now use the log-in system for external tools (OAuth) on all Wikimedia wikis that use the unified login. [118]
- If your wiki adds stars or other icons to interwiki links for featured articles in other languages, you may need to change the JavaScript code. [119]
- You can thank other users for their edits even if your browser does not have JavaScript. [120] [121]
- All edits made through Flow, the new discussion system for MediaWiki, are now visible in user's contributions. You can test it on the Flow talk page on MediaWiki.org. [122] [123]
- You can test a visual tool that shows edits made to an article over time. It only works for English Wikipedia pages for now and is slow on long articles. [124]
- You can test the first version of the new mobile Wikipedia app for Android and iOS. [125]
- Translatewiki.net, the site where you can translate the MediaWiki software, now has a new main page for users without an account. [126]
Future software changes
- There will be no technical changes this week (December 23 to December 29) due to end-of-year holidays.
- When someone deletes, restores, uploads, or moves a file on Commons, pages on all wikis that use that file will be refreshed. [127] [128]
- New users will soon have their user and talk pages added to their watchlist as soon as they create an account. [129] [130].
- The new search tool (CirrusSearch) will not show the text of versions of a page that have been hidden. [131] [132]
- You will soon be able to see the raw HTML created by some wikitext by using the Special:ExpandTemplates tool. [133] [134]
