Anglo-Scottish war (1650–1652) scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Anglo-Scottish war (1650–1652) article has been scheduled as today's featured article for July 22, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/July 22, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:13, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello Girth Summit! It's been a long time and I hope all is well with you! I received a call from an actress and producer named Mycole Metcalf because her long-standing Wikipedia page has Disappeared without reason. I'm wondering if you can take a look at it to see what happened and if it can be restored. Thank you Girth Summit, and please let me know. - Glenn Glenn Francis (talk) 22:18, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Toglenn - the article was deleted a few weeks ago, following a discussion you can see at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mycole Metcalf. I wasn't part of the process, and I haven't reviewed the deleted article thoroughly, but from a quick look I can see why people took issue with it - it seems to be lacking any sources which tick all the boxes of reliability, independence and WP:SECONDARY. If better sourcing was available, of the sort described at WP:GNG, we might be in a position to create a new article, but someone would need to do the legwork in terms of finding them. Apology, with a question

I just discovered that I've been blocked for "Disruptively adding findagrave pages." I ceased doing that as soon as I was asked to, but I never thought of it as disruptive. Some biographies on Wikipedia have findagrave links and some don't; I thought I was being helpful, completing incomplete pages. In any case, I apologise for having overstepped.

I was also blocked because I haven't responded to questions directed to me, but I don't recall ever seeing any, so my question is: Where do they appear?

Incidentally, I am writing today because I wanted to correct information about actor Ronald Colman (1891-1958). The name of his first wife does not agree with the name in his obituary in Variety (21 May 1958, p. 79<ref>https://archive.org/details/variety210-1958-05/page/n224/mode/1up?view=theater&q=obituary<ref>): His first wife was English actress "Thelma Victoria Maud, whom he married in 1918. They were divorced in 1936." The Wikipedia page identifies his wife as "Thelma Raye," which was one of her many surnames <ref>https://footlightnotes.tumblr.com/post/42172461451/thelma-raye-n%C3%A9e-thelma-victoria-maud-bell-morton<ref>, but not her maiden name. Since I'm blocked, a punishment I shall have to learn to live with, perhaps you want to consider the correction.

Sockpuppet query

Hello, Girth Summit,

I just deleted some draft pages and blocked a couple of users who were creating pages about Abdur Rahman, a YouTuber, but I don't remember the exact name of the SPI case. There also seemed to be some overlap in participation of editors identified as sockpuppets in Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Julian Lawrence Hall which you handled a few days ago. I just like to report these incidents to a checkuser who is involved in SPI cases in case some reporting needs to be done. Liz Read! Talk! 06:35, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

SPI open at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Gamer10101, should probably be merged with Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Abdur9470. Pikavoom Talk 07:19, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your note, Liz, and for yours Pikavoom, and apologies for the delay - the end of the school year is approaching, and things are pretty busy at work. I've investigated the Gamer10101 case, and been able to confirm a bunch of those socks. Girth Summit (blether) 20:12, 9 June 2022 (UTC)

Sock IP

Hello GirthSummit, hope you're doing well. As you were the clerk and enforcing admin of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Solavirum/Archive#11_May_2022, I wanted to inform you that Solavirum is still using his sock IP range even after their sockpuppetry ban (diff). Regards, ZaniGiovanni (talk) 10:58, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Another instance. I'm not sure if I need to open a new SPI, just letting you know as the enforcer. ZaniGiovanni (talk) 11:48, 28 May 2022 (UTC)
Hi ZaniGiovanni - apologies, I haven't been around much over the last couple of weeks, real life is unusually busy. If it's a problem, please raise another SPI case, listing the IPs and similarities. Cheers Girth Summit (blether) 11:49, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
I totally understand, I'm low on time myself. And no problem, I think I'll make a new SPI when time allows. I had just remembered you asked me to let you know if the IP came back (it's the same range), so I wanted to inform you first. Regards, ZaniGiovanni (talk) 10:41, 31 May 2022 (UTC)
Hi again Girth Summit, hope all is well. I followed on your suggestion and opened a new SPI. Since then, the master (after more than a month) commented and pinged us both on their talk page [2], denying that the new IPs are them and that they haven't edited since the sock block. I found this denial extremely odd to say the least, since the range 89.219.164.0/22 (talk · contribs) edits clearly show that all the IPs come from the same sock range, including the new ones I reported, and that Solavirum actually edited with that same range again even after their sock block. I thought you should be aware of this. Regards, ZaniGiovanni (talk) 16:44, 6 June 2022 (UTC)
Hi ZaniGiovanni, apologies for the slow response - it's getting near the end of the school year, and work is very busy at the moment. So, my problem here is that my hands are somewhat tied by the CU policy in what I can say publicly about IP addresses, when I have run checkuser on an account. I'm going to leave that report to another SPI clerk/admin to handle. In general terms, I'd say that you shouldn't give too much thought to their denials - someone who has recently been caught evading their TBan by editing through an IP is not likely to be given much credence when they claim not to have continued doing the same thing to evade a block. Girth Summit (blether) 20:21, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for your time, and good luck with your IRL responsibilities. ZaniGiovanni (talk) 01:35, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

SPI

I'm new to this sockpuppet investigations thing, so could you please help me be a better evidence finder? What do I need to do? NASCARfan0548  17:40, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Did you read Blablubb's guide, which I linked to at the SPI? That has some good advice. We're looking for diffs, not just a link to an account or an IP adress and you saying 'they are doing the same thing' - show us that they're doing the same thing, give us diffs that the sockmaster or previous socks performed, and similar ones that the IP performed. Girth Summit (blether) 17:43, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
OK, thanks! NASCARfan0548  17:45, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

NickJr Fanon2021 SPI

Not sure if it's worth a new request given the one that was just closed, but they already seem to be back at 64ZooLaneFan22: similar username styling/format and even same editing on Little Charley Bear (see [3] vs. [4]). Personally I don't see a reason to request this in the SPI, especially given how obvious it is with that evidence. Thanks in advance. Magitroopa (talk) 08:06, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Girth Summit,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here.   Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 13763 articles, as of 16:00, 4 December 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

False noses? Well, I did say it was bad schoolboy French, and I meant it! I actually lived in Brussels for a year in the early 2000s, but my ability to learn either of the languages was hampered by the locals' tendency to raise their eyebrows at my poor attempts and then reply to me in perfect English... Girth Summit (blether) 20:12, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
lol. I did better. I lived in Paris for a few years, and most of the French couldn't speak "perfect English". I became so fluent I began to dream in French. It's fairly rusty now from disuse.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:22, 24 June 2022 (UTC)
Yeah - Paris is a different kettle of fish, you can't rely on them speaking English. In my experience, the most competent English language speakers in Europe are the Dutch, then the Norwegians, then the Belgians. Swedes and Danes rank highly too. The English themselves are probably in the top ten, but I wouldn't be confident about that. Girth Summit (blether) 20:25, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Small note on SRG reporting

Hi,

In case like this (Steward requests/Global#Global lock for Giubbotto non ortodosso sock(s) where same accounts and additional accounts are being requested) please don't use script and edit the original request manually, unless the request has already been handled. It makes our (crazy) life easier. Thanks! — regards, Revi 14:01, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Hi Revi - apologies, I should have been more careful there. The script allows me to select which accounts I want to request lock on, I should have unticked the boxes for accounts that had already been reported. I take it that it's OK to use the script if I avoid double-reporting? Girth Summit (blether) 14:32, 26 June 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, it's absolutely fine to use the script as long as it's not duplicate. — regards, Revi 15:45, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

Lastminute.com shenanigans

There is something going on that I thought an admin might be able to help with. A new user left what was clearly a disgruntled Yelp review on the Lastminute.com page but a recently created account 'LM Corporate' removed. I would say both of these users should be prevented from editing further but I wasn't sure who to warn first...any help you might have would be very appreciated. Best, Kazamzam (talk) 15:42, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, Kazamzam. I've advised the person who left the original comments that they were inappropriate; the lm corporate account has been blocked as a username violation. For future reference, accounts that have names representing a company, and which are editing about that company, can be reported to WP:UAA. I also undid one of the changes you made to the page; the links to Which? were not an attempt to use the {{which}} template, they were references to the UK consumer group of that name. The reference I'd like to use is the top result here. Seasider53 (talk) 11:06, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Sounds technical - I'd suggest posting at the Helpdesk, that side of thing isn't my forte. Girth Summit (blether) 16:18, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
Ha, I had it all typed out for the help desk, then decided to try creating the reference manually. I was using the cite option in the visual editor, which must do some errant magic to the URL when it's generated. Long story short, I is good now. Seasider53 (talk) 16:50, 30 June 2022 (UTC)
If you were using the visual editor, I'm doubly the wrong person to ask! I remember looking at it once, years ago; my main recollection is a strong sense of confusion tinged with dismay. Maybe it's improved since then? Girth Summit (blether) 05:34, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
It's mostly decent. I have to revert to the source editor for the occasional thing, but I recommend it, especially if you're just copyediting. Seasider53 (talk) 13:09, 1 July 2022 (UTC)

Patient advice

Hello, I see that you've previously given very patient advice to user Kitchen Knife. They seem to be going off the rails again. Perhaps you can provide some third party advice to them (or to me, as you see fit). I see they have been an editor with thousands of contributions since 2007, so I'm perplexed by their current behaviour. (Hohum @) 18:16, 2 July 2022 (UTC)

Hi - sorry for the delay, haven't logged in for a couple of days. I see you blocked already, but I took a quick look and they are confirmed. Any other accounts at present, but they're using a couple of very wide ranges so it's hard to be sure. Girth Summit (blether) 09:11, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

idk if a youtube query search in which a decent list of info is available to define the term "monkey branching" is valid as a source. Regardless, here is the link if you should be so inclined to pick and choose to determine if the definition holds.

This can't be permitted, can it? From the talk page at Treasurer's House, York: "Hello! During late June, July and some of August, I'm working on a paid project sponsored by the National Trust to review and enhance coverage of NT sites. You can find the pilot edits here, as well as a statement and contact details for the National Trust. I am leaving this message when I make a first edit to a page; please do get in touch if you have any concerns." Seasider53 (talk) 11:15, 4 July 2022 (UTC)

Undeclared paid editing is forbidden, not just by local policy but by the WMF terms and conditions. Declared paid editing is a different kettle of fish - if you declare your connection, it's permitted. The WP:COI guidelines still apply, but providing the subjects they're writing about are notable (I doubt there are many non-notable NT properties) and their editing is neutral and properly sourced, there shouldn't be a problem. Reporting a sockpuppet for blocked user Filbert007

Can you please let me know if I made any mistakes when reporting this sock puppet yesterday, something I've never done before, and if so, what corrections do I need to make? Thank you. Dolmance (talk) 17:04, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

There were a few issues with it - you filed it under the stock's name rather than the master's, and it didn't actually link to the master, but don't worry about it - SPI formatting is tricky to get right, especially if you don't do it regularly. I've fixed the issues with it, but didn't want to investigate it myself at the time. I may come back to it, or another admin or clerk may pick it up. Girth Summit (blether) 17:22, 9 July 2022 (UTC)

Stavros Halkias continues

Hi, in light of the full protection you placed on Stavros Halkias, this edit, where user places the warred-over content on a related page, strikes me as highly inappropriate, especially with the user's stated intention in the edit summary to begin edit warring again at Stavros Halkias as soon as protection expires on there. A.C. Monza FA candidate

Hey, how's it going? I see you've reviewed football-related articles for FA in recent years. A.C. Monza has been a candidate for over three weeks, and there are almost no comments. I would really appreciate it if you took some time to leave a comment (it doesn't necessarily have to be a full review) :) Nehme1499 21:09, 16 July 2022 (UTC)

Phony claims

User:Ilovehistory16, whose account was created on June 28, claims on their userpage (the Good Article icon) that they helped bring an article to Good Article status back in October 2021. They also claim that they live in Germany - I just blocked an IP range they are using, which geolocates to Virginia (see Special:contributions/2600:1702:3233:a30::/64). Meanwhile they have been creating a fair amount of disruption creating new articles, new drafts, articles-forced-into-drafts, and submitting drafts created by other users for review (I see no pattern to the submissions in terms of a connection between the user and the authors of the drafts). They also copied User:Ilenekrall/sandbox to Draft:Monte Belo Condominiums. Ilenekrall created the sandbox back in 2017 and has done nothing else with that account. I've come close to blocking them for disruption, but I'd like to know if they are a sock first. Of course, any evidence that they are a sock may be too old, but I think there's enough here to warrant a check.--Bbb23 (talk) 22:09, 17 July 2022 (UTC)

I see you've blocked already. The editing other users' user pages and copying drafts from their sandboxes was indeed suspicious, so I took a look. I'm going to record what I found in an SPI case for future reference... Girth Summit (blether) 15:26, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for checking, and thanks for the ping at the SPI. Yes, the disruption the user was causing kept rising, and I wasn't sure how busy you were.--Bbb23 (talk) 16:21, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Busy isn't exactly the right word. School has broken up, I'm in Dumfries and Galloway visiting parents. Today I've been on a driving tour, taking pictures of historic buildings to decorate my next few articles. Glad to say that it's about 15 degrees C cooler here than it is in Englandshire - still warm and sunny though. Happy days! Girth Summit (blether) 17:45, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
The stereotypical Brit revels in warm, sunny weather, although perhaps not quite as hot as it has been lately. Where we used to live, it sometimes climbed over 100 degrees F, but we moved to a much cooler part of the country, thank god.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:55, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
  • I forgot to ask about your comment at the SPI. naming for the oldest account with edits I detected. Not sure what you mean by that. The oldest account is R1322. Do you mean that you couldn't see ("detect") the edits made in January because the account is stale but were only able to confirm through login data? Even so, if you can confirm and call them a confirmed sock, it seems that they should be the master. I'll obviously defer to your decision, but...--Bbb23 (talk) 19:36, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
By 'I can detect', I meant that there is probably an older master. I'd overlooked R1322's deleted edits from January - if you want to move the case to that name I wouldn't object at all, but I wonder whether the more prolific (if slightly later) account is a more useful name in terms of recognisable behaviour. Girth Summit (blether) 20:18, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
We frequently have sockmasters who have made fewer edits than their socks. I see no reason to make an exception here. With your permission, I'll request a clerk move the case and retag (patrolling administrators aren't permitted to move cases).--Bbb23 (talk) 20:24, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
Sure, go ahead - I'd do it myself, but am on my phone and would probably screw it up. Girth Summit (blether) 20:42, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

It was a rhetorical question. :-) Is it okay for me to tag the accounts at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/GTNO6, or do you have more to do first?--Bbb23 (talk) 16:54, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Have another look now - I was doing a bit more poking around. There were a few more, with some pretty nasty stuff in their contribs, and more than one had TPA/e-mail revoked. I've re-blocked all sans TPA/e-mail, and tagged. Girth Summit (blether) 16:57, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Is there an actual behavioral pattern, or it just trolling-vandalism-and-weird beefs?--Bbb23 (talk) 17:09, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh, I think I forgot to say thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:11, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
No worries. I didn't really do a behavioural investigation - all these connections were purely technical. The impression I got was GHBH, where the GH had an interest in patrolling and SPIs (amongst other things), and the BHs did random childish trolling, with an interest in racism and being an edgelord (amongst other things). Feel free to peruse their contribs to get a feel for them - some of the revdelled stuff is particularly pleasant. Girth Summit (blether) 18:30, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

The nom has withdrawn their nomination, and there are no outstanding delete !votes, because I thought my !vote for a redirect is essentially a !vote to delete. July songs

Thank you today for that one, introduced: "Another joint venture from the itinerant repeat nominator Gog the Mild and the Scottish history expert Girth Summit. Charles I was king of England and Scotland, as two entirely separate matters. When the English chopped his head off they didn't consult the Scots. So when the Scots crowned Charles II it was as king of Britain (not Scotland). Which, with massive understatement, could be described as a provocation. In short order Oliver Cromwell was leading an English army across the border. The campaign was hard fought, but ended with the whole of Scotland subjugated. OK, in some ways it ended with Charles and the Scots' army going down to defeat in Worcester. Which part of Scotland is Worcester in, you ask? Read the article. Lovingly crafted and fresh from a rigorous GAN courtesy of Tayi Arajakate we believe this is ready for the exigencies of a FAC." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:11, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

Wish to keep you informed

Greetings @Girth Summit,

There is some credibly sourced content added by me to the article Tourism in Pakistan. In last moth end part of it got deleted first then contested by a user and subsequently that user was proved to be sock. The sock user had added talk page message to contest the content, by the time I partially prepared reply in my sandbox, other users seems to have realized that it was a sock account and content was restored and their talk page message was reverted (by your edit dif 1101324993) , so I had no hurry to post my reply. (Almost immediately after sock edits were reverted, another user entered the scene to delete the next sourced content section added by me so my priority changed towards thinking over discussion for the same, which still I have not written and opened. Personally I make point to not engage in any content edit wars or personalizing disputes from my end and limit myself to talk page content dispute resolution mechanisms).

While I could not find time to open discussions @ the article talk page a new user account opened up User:ImmortalTruthIII (contribs) directly entered my sandbox to engage in discussion with attitude of whataboutism and personal aspersions. Idk if they are same sock account, but IMHO other users are less likely to keep track of my sandbox which is named very unrelated. Idk what are sock related identity and processes. I have kept good faith from my side. Posted reference sources shared by them @ Talk:Rape in India#A note and called upon users @ India notice board for India related articles improvement vis a vis discrimination against women in India. And there after replied the new user account @ their talk page User talk:ImmortalTruthIII#Your discussion. My reply @ their talk page speaks for itself so I would not repeat that here.

I do not know if discussed account is sock or not and what are observation and sock control processes. While replying that account in good faith, as responsible member of WP community I wish to keep you informed of the developments, so you can guide me, if needed. This is for your information.

Thanks and warm regards.

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Girth Summit,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

DYK for Crossmichael Parish Church

On 9 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Crossmichael Parish Church, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that within the graveyard of the Category A–listed Crossmichael Parish Church, there is a memorial (pictured) to William Gordon of Greenlaw that is itself designated Category A in its own right? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Crossmichael Parish Church. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Crossmichael Parish Church), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Deletionist

PDXBart's first edit was to nominate VersaLogic for deletion. After that he nominated many other articles for deletion and voted in others. There's also this very odd deleted edit at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Kbabej, a user who Welcomed them, ostensibly because of their interest in Oregon articles (Kbabej was unblocked several years ago after I CU-blocked them - I didn't even realize there might be a connection until I started writing this). The user's edit summaries are not that of a new user.

What brought the user to my attention initially, was none of the above. It was a multiple speedy tagging of an article that I reverted and for which I warned the user. I also asked them about other accounts. Their reaction was, uh, not optimal. See their Talk page. What do you think?--Bbb23 (talk) 13:15, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Having looked at that old SPI case, I'm taking a look. Girth Summit (blether) 13:31, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
(edit conflict) (talk page watcher) @Bbb23: I know you're more than capable of standing up for yourself, but I felt obliged to leave an NPA warning nonetheless. I concur on the obvious sockiness. My own first edits, a decade ago, were to start an AfD (as you may recall, having defended me from the ensuing sockpuppetry accusations). My defense at the time was, essentially, that you can start an AfD successfully just by being book-smart. These edits read street-smart, though. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 13:36, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
I wouldn't say you're unique in being able to start an AfD as your first edit, but I would say that you're relatively rare. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 13:39, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
I took a look - the fact that one of Kbabej's first socks was called PDX_er1 did make me suspicious. However, CU doesn't point to a connection between the accounts, and there's nobody else on their IP. A bit of Googling tells me that PDX is the code for Portland International Airport, so perhaps it's not that suspicious. I agree that the editing looks like someone who has been here before, but I can't point to anyone in particular. Girth Summit (blether) 13:44, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks very much.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:05, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Kinda urgent SPI request

Hey Girth, can you take a look at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Metaverse Yadav - I don't think a CU is needed but it's a little time sensitive cause I'd like to stop the disruption via page hijack that has happened yet again (and before Google indexes it.) They're obvious ducks. PRAXIDICAE🌈 14:24, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

looking... Girth Summit (blether) 14:27, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
re: protection - I think it's probably best not to since it'll just slip under the radar, it's a good honeypot, especially now that it'll be on a few more peoples WL. But if you wouldn't mind G5ing Manoj Yadav so I can move the other article back, that'd be appreciated. PRAXIDICAE🌈 14:39, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Earlstoun Castle

On 14 August 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Earlstoun Castle, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ...that defence was not a significant factor in the design or placement of Earlstoun Castle, which was unusual for a 16th-century tower house? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Earlstoun Castle. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Earlstoun Castle), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. SPI case

Hi Girthsummit! I noticed the note on the SPI case I filed, and kind of wanted to explain my rationale for filing it. I looked at the contributions for Communicationstmathews, and saw that most of the edits they made were redacted. When the new account was created, their edits were identical (me and one other user reverted them, so I saw the edits yesterday before they were deleted.) My thought process was that this new account was evading a block and making the exact same edits that were permanently deleted the day prior for whatever reason. My fault was not checking the talk page to see what kind of block was made (soft or hard,) but I only saw the contributions page and noticed the block. Just wanted to explain my thought process so it didn't seem like I was filing the case in bad faith, which is something I really do try hard to avoid. I do appreciate the feedback though and will keep all of this in mind moving forward. Thanks! SPF121188 (talk this way) (contribs) 14:42, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

No worries, easy mistake to make. Just check the type of block before reporting in future. Their edits were completely inappropriate, I've left them some guidance on their talk. Let me know if they ignore that and keep adding it - they're not socking, but they are replacing sourced content with breathless, unsourced puffery, which is also not cool. Girth Summit (blether) 14:45, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Will do, thank you! I really do appreciate the feedback, and I'll be sure to keep that in mind moving forward! Always working to be a better contributor where I can! SPF121188 (talk this way) (contribs) 14:49, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I'm a bit puzzled by the 3-month block of this IP. Their only edit was actually a good one (despite being reverted, I've since restored it). I must be missing something, can you tell me what? Thanks and cheers! --Randykitty (talk) 09:57, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

It's a range block on 92.40.160.0/19, which was being used by an abusive LTA. It's always possible there could be good faith users affected by any range block, so I've got no problem with your reinstating good edits you see from it. Girth Summit (blether) 10:03, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Oh crumbs - about now deleted Santi García Cremades

Hi GS - and here was I adding the edit summary

Tidy reference 1 - my Spanish is limited, but this would appear to be about his participation in an academic conference about science communication. Which is great, more science communication is needed on and off wiki, but may not assist a narrow assertion of notability, in this case WP:NACADEMIC. This is in no way prejudicial to a broader WP:GNG assertion as a person.

At work, when I make these kind of mistakes I send "embarrassedwhippet.jpg" to my colleagues. Pete AU aka Shirt58 (talk) 11:13, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

I have a bored whippet lying next to me who wants me to take her for a walk! If you've spent time assessing the sources and think an article could be written, feel free to recreate. Girth Summit (blether) 11:17, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Sudip Kumar Nepal Why do you keep asking people about checkuser? So far you've asked me to check you twice, you asked Bbb23 about it, and you've been asking questions over at WT:CheckUser. Given the failed requests to get their block lifted by multiple admins

I think it's time to consider adjusting talk page privileges on your block at User talk:Moonlight Entm. We've all done our best. BusterD (talk) 18:36, 3 September 2022 (UTC)

It's not something I'd do myself as the blocking admin - except when it's a sock of an LTA, I only revoke TPA on accounts I've blocked myself in fairly extreme circumstances, on the grounds of WP:ADMINACCT. That said, there's nothing stopping any other admin from drawing a line under it by modifying my block if they think the requests are just a time sink at this point. . Girth Summit (blether) 18:50, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
I agree that removing talk page access for User talk:Moonlight Entm is abundantly justified. EdJohnston (talk) 18:59, 3 September 2022 (UTC)
I've taken the liberty of removing talk page access, per Ed's agreement. BusterD (talk) 16:39, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
I think that's reasonable, but you should probably put a template on there indicating that you've done that, pointing them at UTRS. (Deepfriedokra will thank me for saying that I'm sure...) Girth Summit (blether) 16:44, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
Sure. I can ignore them there as well. 😋 -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:51, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
I am happy to say, I have had little prior experience with such templates or with UTRS. In many ways I still feel like a trusted amateur. Only doing the easy part of the work. Dipping my toes in deeper waters these days. Could use all the feedback I can get from editors in this conversation. Just asked Liz to critique me with my AfD work. Went back through new page patrol school with Atsme a few months ago. So much to be familiar with... A sticking point is my pagespace work; there's an inner stuckness I haven't been able to breech yet. BusterD (talk) 17:29, 4 September 2022 (UTC)
There's a lot to learn! Still, you don't need to learn it all - we all find our niches. That doesn't look like the right template - it's talking about anonymous users - I think the one you wanted there was Template:Blocked talk-revoked-notice. I almost always use a tool like Twinkle or SPIhelper to apply blocks - they select the right template for you automatically. Girth Summit (blether) 17:38, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

I find the tasks I gravitate towards largely involve making peace and herding folks in a positive direction. Don't need tools for that, but the trust I feel is useful. BusterD (talk) 17:50, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Trust is always good to have, and worth earning. That template looks good now. Girth Summit (blether) 17:58, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Unprotection

The IP is complaining about my refusal to unprotect Christine Weston Chandler. -- Malcolmxl5 (talk) 16:10, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, I know - they tried creating an RfC on its talk page (see Yapperbot's message above this), which I have twice now G8ed. Girth Summit (blether) 16:17, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Apologies for the inadvertent talk page stalking, but just wanted to say there is likely to be more of this nonsense given the recent tsuris over Kiwi Farms. Cheers, and thanks for all the thankless admin work! Dumuzid (talk) 16:25, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Ah - that had all rather passed me by to be honest. I get all my news from Radio 4, Kiwi Farms hasn't made it onto the Today Programme yet... Girth Summit (blether) 16:34, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
I would like to make it clear that I am neither a supporter nor member of KF. I have been heavily involved in the dropkiwifarms campaign and am a member of one of the marginalized groups that they target. I believe that not only should there be an article on Christine be created based on its notability, but also to provide a nuetral, non-hateful source of information, as currently the first result for her name is the "real life villains wiki". I believe that the article about her should be placed under page protection to prevent bad faith edits against her. 168.8.125.20 (talk) 16:49, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Girth Summit -- I am far too old to know any of this, so I envy you! And to the IP, I did not mean to cast aspersions upon you or any other specific person, but I think what I said holds true. And even if an article were to be created with the best of intentions, I personally believe there is no way it would not be damaging and harmful to its subject. As such, I will be a forever no !vote, but consensus can change. Cheers. Dumuzid (talk) 17:25, 6 September 2022 (UTC)

Stavros Halkias flares back up

Hi. I figured I'd notify you in case you feel it's worth taking any action: after a period of quiet, the Toronto IP appears to have relaunched the edit war at Stavros Halkias. Brycehughes (talk) 03:42, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

So I see. I've protected for three months now. Why this person won't just engage on the talk page is beyond me. Girth Summit (blether) 17:38, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

A heads up

Hello! I am letting you know that I pinged you on User talk:HiltonCalifornia since I am not exactly sure how a user would go about messaging Wikipedia to alert they are the copyright holder to an image used by The NY Times. Also, this same user is possibly a sock (Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/HiltonCalifornia), and with this new possible copyright violation, my suspicions are even higher. Elijahandskip (talk) 05:15, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

I'm personally not an export on handling copyvios, especially image ones - however, the SPI was a good shout, this account is   Confirmed to the others. Next time, please raise the case so that the oldest account is the master (even if they're already blocked), and the new account is listed as a sock. I'll go tidy it up now. Girth Summit (blether) 05:33, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Tagging of articles

Hi Girth Summit - Sorry to trouble you with this. A new editor has recently tagged some 40 articles, some of which I have written, with notability tags. While the editor may well have a point that these articles can be improved, these articles are about large listed companies (constituents of the FTSE 250 index mainly). The new editor seems very familiar with our guidelines (see User talk:Dormskirk#Notability of investment trusts) so I suspect they are not really that that new to wikipedia. Thoughts welcome. Best wishes. Dormskirk (talk) 08:22, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

I agree that this is an unusual pattern (and an unusual interpretation of WP:N). Please leave it with me for a bit until I get chance to take a proper look. Girth Summit (blether) 10:29, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Many thanks for that. Dormskirk (talk) 11:11, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
The account was the sock of an LTA. After a bit of digging around, I just blocked about fifty accounts, including that one. I have rolled back all their live article-space contribs. Cheers Girth Summit (blether) 12:50, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
Great. I suspected as much. many thanks. Dormskirk (talk) 12:57, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
