happy new year

Have a good start into 2023, with small yellow flowers that bloom in January even in Germany, and a bright blue sky, - colours reminiscent of the Ukrainian flag. My latest DYK was about a composition by the other Graham, and you can hear his birthday concert, GW60. The delightful speech was given in German by his former chemistry teacher, Andrew Szydlo, who remembered how the boy Graham was the first to tell him that his violin playing was beautiful, and then asking 1) if they could play together, 2) if on the street, 3) if on a Paris street. Lasting friendship. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:23, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

I'm on vacation, - click on songs! I tell my own stories now, instead of relying on DYK. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:47, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

I'm back. - Melitta Muszely died, RIP - the other story is 10 years old OTD ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:51, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

Image Captions

Hello! I was going off of Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions when I added the period to the image caption on Flying toilet. Looking back on the edit now, the caption isn't really a full sentence, so I appreciate your later edit.

Thank you!

May I request feedback regarding screen reader accessibility user experience

Howdy Graham. Thanks for pinging me on the technical Village pump regarding the apparent failure of log out confirmation scripts; that issue seems fixed now and I honestly have no idea why. I noted that you are a user of screen readers and as such I would frequently find it highly beneficial to hit you up for feedback regarding the accessibility and user experience of coding work I do. I try to get it right but know I could almost certainly do better. I have no immediate request for feedback, and am just asking (now while it's fresh) if you'd be okay with me asking later when I do have specific questions. Cheers Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 17:19, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I remember in the past you reverted some edits of mine for overlinking and since then I have tried to learn from what you told me. I recently found an article that has an large number of links and I believe that many of those links violate WP:OVERLINK. However, there is an user that frequency edits said page that keeps adding the links back after I remove them. I want to avoid an edit war with this user so I was wondering if you could check the article out to see if the links in the page truly do violate WP:OVERLINK. The page is Luís Filipe Vieira. Thank you DiSantis19 (talk) 17:10, 2 February 2023 (UTC)

@DiSantis19: Nope, they don't violate the overlinking guideline and SLBedit is correct here. "Advance payment" is not that common a term and it's OK to repeat links after the lead. Graham87 01:08, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Ok cool good to know DiSantis19 (talk) 02:10, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

New account

Hi Graham87, a few weeks ago we spoke when I was an IP but could not get an account (for technical reasons on my end).

I now have this account and was wondering if my past IP addresses can be added to this account to accelerate my privilages?

They were 78.18.228.191 (talk · contribs) and 78.18.249.143 (talk · contribs) (the one I talked to you from). I have ovrehauled whole articles (e.g. Catherine Destivelle, Wolfgang Gullich, Taylor Parsons, Piolet d'Or, Jumbo Love, and Free solo climbing) so getting autopatrolled (so I could create new climbing articles and categories), and autoconfirmed (so I can rename articles) would be great if appropriate?

Thank you for any help you might be able to offer. Aszx5000 (talk) 20:16, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

@Aszx5000: I've gone and given you the confirmed user right for now, which is all you'll need to create articles/categories ... I've set it to expire when the software automatically gives you the autoconfirmed right in four days' time (which it would've anyway, no matter what I did, because you've already made more than ten edits with your account). Any further permission requests should go to requests for permissions. Graham87 01:51, 9 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for that Graham87, much appreciated! Aszx5000 (talk) 08:30, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Tables vs lists

Hi Graham, TheDJ here. I've recently been working on some cleanup for File pages, with a goal of making them more suited for mobile devices, but also just doing some long needed updates to unify styling, layout and accessibility. Now as part of this, I've been staring at the "File upload history"-part of pages. For instance this linked example. I've been considering turning such tables into lists, much like page history and recent changes and many other pages types like this are lists. This would allow for them to be easier to render on mobile devices. As part of that, I'd loose the table headers of course and this might reduce accessibility a bit. What do you think about that ? Are these labels necessary for comprehension of that action, could we do without, or do we need additional accessibility labels within the list ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:12, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey @TheDJ: I don't think we'd lose much if anything accessibility-wise by removing those headers. The history pages are still easy to understand without them. Graham87 14:52, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Help regarding IP ban

Hello, I have some questions and I would really appreciate your help. I’ve been editing and contributing to Wikipedia for almost a year now, and I have spent a great amount of time doing research to be able to contribute. Although i’ve been here for almost a year, I will admit that I am not the best when it comes to technology. Many things on Wikipedia can sometimes be extremely confusing, so I tried to just stick to doing the basics in case of breaking any rules. Just recently, I was about to create some new articles, only to find out that my IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia. It starts off by informing me that “most people who see this message have done nothing wrong”, so I am hoping that i’m one of those people—as I don’t believe I did anything wrong. It now says that I am blocked, and that this block will expire in many months.

Additionally, the message says that I will still be able to edit my user talk page, but it seems to be locked and not allowing me to. I am trying to reach out to you here because I am not quite sure what exactly to do. I apologise if this was not the correct way to go about it. Please help, and I would like to thank you in advance.

Sincerly, Meladjawdat Meladjawdat 1 (talk) 16:48, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

@Meladjawdat 1: You needed to be logged in to edit, which you've done (otherwise you wouldn't have been able to post this message here). However, please try to use your earlier Meladjawdat account (I assume that was yours); you won't be able to create any articles with your new one for a while because it doesn't have enough edits (unless I give it a special flag). Graham87 16:57, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
Hello Graham, i can't login into original account as i'm blocked from hence why i created this new account, any advice or help would be appreciated.
Sincerely Meladjawdat Meladjawdat 1 (talk) 17:22, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
@Meladjawdat 1: Could you let me know the IP address it says in the block message, either here or by emailing me at grahamwp gmail.com (because it does reveal your approximate location). I try to set all anon blocks to anon-only so unless either I've made a grave mistake or the block's been modified, you should be able to log in. It might take me some time to respond as it's past 1:40AM in my time zone. Any talk page watchers including admins can feel free to take whatever action they like regarding this situation if I'm not around to deal with it. Graham87 17:44, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
I'll send my IP address to the email you specified Meladjawdat 1 (talk) 18:01, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, got it. I'll continue this conversation by email as I can't find anything unusual regarding that address. Graham87 18:07, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Accessibility concerns with large articles?

Hi again. You may recall I asked recently if I could hit you up regarding accessibility concerns? Some naysayers offering little but opinionated rhetoric inspired me to request an expert evaluation of the validity of guidance regarding large articles. It occurred to me that beyond the technical, there are likely to be accessibility concerns, and wonder if you might have any feedback there? Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 16:53, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

@Fred Gandt: I don't really have anything to add; it's not a major issue in articles for screen reader users ... and if it becomes one, the article's would probably be close to the template limits anyway. Graham87 17:26, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
Good to know; thank you 😊 Fred Gandt · talk · contribs 17:32, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Vandal reported

Hello, I'd like to report an anonymous vandal using the IP 151.30.229.210 to disrupt some pages, the IP had already been blocked globally but returned after the expiring, in another language Wikipedia it's currently blocked but here not yet. I see that you're a sysop, could you block this IP for a bit longer time to prevent more damaging? 5.170.28.224 (talk) 15:17, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

I've blocked it, but you might want to try the usual place for this or asking the stewards as I have done next time. Any particular reason you asked me? Is it because of my work on vandals like this or something else? Graham87 15:31, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, I didn't know about those places to report the vandal, I'll follow your advice next time! I've written to you because I was looking for a sysop who blocked someone today, some days ago I asked another sysop for the same reason. 5.170.28.224 (talk) 15:41, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

Please, unblock the students

This is a training and edit - a - thon event that was carried out earlier last week. So the students are practicing how to wiklink. If there are editoral violations, I don't think it's intentional.

Please, unblock all of them. We all are still learning. Thanks very much for your positive response. Onwuka Glory (talk) 19:15, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

@Onwuka Glory: Thanks for reaching out to me. I will if you agree to get them to practice wikilinking on their user pages or in their user sandbox and not touch articles. I could enforce that through the software but I'd prefer not to. The number of editorial violations they've made is far too high for my comfort. For practice editing in the article namespace that should be less error-prone, might I suggest the Typo Team? Assuming that'd be suitable for mobiles. They don't have to join it officially (and probably shouldn't) but if they just stick to searching for and correcting very obvious typos like "offical", that'd be fine. If they're going to edit actual articles, please get them to slow down ... the autocnofirmed threshold is ten edits in four days. Graham87 19:29, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
Also having them create a user page saying that they're your student in a format like "This user is in Onwuka Glory's class." would be a good idea. Graham87 19:32, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

We will correct our errors and mistakes

Good morning. I 've read through all your corrections and do promise that from now I would put up a barn on our group chat so that they would stop.

However, I would be very grateful learning from you on how to use the user page and sandbox for effective learning.

Thanks once again for your understanding. Onwuka Glory (talk) 03:51, 26 February 2023 (UTC)

Need your advice on something

Hey there, Graham. On a non-Wiki related website I asked for a feature where keyboard shortcuts would be implemented. I got a commenting asking if the mentioned shortcuts are already taken by browsers or screen readers. I know about browsers. But can you check if they are in conflict with any screen readers you use?

"Is it technically feasible to implement such a feature on PC, Mac and Linux?

  1. For previous and next meeting you can use, similar to what Youtube has, Shift+P and Shift+N.
  2. Ctrl + (1–8) for the drop-down menu and Alt + (A–Z) for the initials of each option in all 8 tabs, for a lack of better term, similar to what MS Word has with its menu bar tabs.
  3. Log in and log out global hotkeys Alt + I, Alt + O, respectively.
  4. Global hotkeys for common TM meeting roles, excluding Zoom master, Joke master,... (Alt+Shift) + Numpad numbers (1–9) for TM, GE, S, SE, TTM, WOD, AC, TMR in that order.
  5. Alt +(1–9) for TT speakers.
  6. Drop-down menu be easily accessible with ↓ and ↑ arrows.
  7. Request a new speech: Alt + R.
  8. Access meeting agenda with Alt + A.

I am only on PC. If consensus is reached for the above mentioned suggestions, I will come up with equivalent shortcuts for Mac and Linux users. Purpose of this: to alleviate the impaired, visually or otherwise, to use Easy speak with better navigability." Qwerty284651 (talk) 04:43, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

@Qwerty284651: The alt keys are OK but messing with the numpad/arrows is not a good idea for screen reader users. I can't answer any questions beyond that. Graham87 04:55, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, Graham. Qwerty284651 (talk) 06:14, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi Graham. I just answered your comment about the addition of the link to the update of the research of Deque entitled "Why Don’t Screen Readers Always Read What’s on the Screen? Part 1: Punctuation and Typographic Symbols." Not sure you can read my reply on my page (It's the first time I edit a Wikipedia page, and start a "talk" about it), so I will copy it here: Hi Graham. Did you read the article ? It is an update of the article from Deque entitled "Why Don’t Screen Readers Always Read What’s on the Screen? Part 1: Punctuation and Typographic Symbols." You find a huge table of special characters, including ? ! ... , ; etc, and how they are being read by screen readers today in 2023. Because the support changed quite a lot since the last research back on 2014 by Deque. So the research is particularly fitting the page of Wikipedia about screen readers as a whole, and particularly the Verbosity settings, which is the one that defines how detailed the special characters will be read. It would be a pity to not make the readers aware that the support differs from one screen reader to another and that it also changes with time. Thank you for reconsidering your decision. 2A02:A03F:6BBD:7900:A8E1:BA7C:B9D8:4E62 (talk) 14:25, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Suspicious user

I want to inform about a user, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/JeffFatt55, who appears to be a potentially disruptive user. Their recent edit see them changing the birthdates of the people the articles are about from their actual birthdate to a different date, changing the birth month to March. Also changing the place of birth for Jeff Fatt, one of the articles I’m referring to, from his place of birth to a place where he wasn’t born. I have a suspicion that this user might be related to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Marykember, one of the most notorious users on Wikipedia, as the editing patterns are very similar. I can’t actually prove that this user is actually a sockpuppet of Marykember, but I feel like it is. Dipper Dalmatian (talk) 15:57, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

@Dipper Dalmatian: Well they're disruptive so they've been blocked. In future, please go to the administrators' incidents noticeboard for situations like this. Graham87 16:01, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

March 2023

Your recent editing history at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2023-03-20/Interview shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. ––FormalDude (talk) 06:34, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Nice to be remembered!

Hi Graham! I just saw your revert of my airport edition about the Boeing 737 crash in Australia. I did not mind at all specially because I saw that you remember me! Recently I passed the 20 years milestone here and I see that you are about to surpass it too! Its funny because in 2008, I remember explicitly telling my cousin, while taking a swim in her home's pool during a trip to Puerto Rico, that I was about to retire from Wikipedia as I thought everything that I had to write about was already written yet here I am still, in 2022 I broke my personal records both in edits for one month and for the year LOL! Lots of things happened since, I even came out as transgender in my user page but unfortunately, someone deleted that and it went to a vote where most people agreed with him etc. cause my user page is not for personal information blah..I thought I could put my bio on my user page and it was there about 5 years, but alas, I guess not.

Anyways it is good to be remembered! Hope we can still be saying this to each other 20 further years down the road! Thanks and God bless you! Antonio now Transgender Miss Jeanette Martin (yes?) 07:52, March 25, 2023 (UTC)

@AntonioMartin: (or Jeanette Martin) Thanks for the note ... time flies! Yeah Wikipedia will never be completely finished ... that's the beauty and the curse of it. I too once thought I'd achieved everything I could here back in 2007 ... how wrong I was! Congratulations on making it to 20 years and coming out as trans! I hope we can edit for many more years ... Graham87 08:10, 25 March 2023 (UTC)
Hi Graham! Time sure flies for real and Wikipedia will never be finished that is another beautiful thing! Thanks for your kind words! In a world where people a lot of times don't understand us or respect us, words like that are reassuring that there are still good people out there1 Anyways, check out my latest article that I finished today, Angelica Chain- the photo on it is not the best but its the only one of hers I found on wiki commons lol!- part of a project I am a member of, named Women in Red, which aims at making women biographies 50 percent of all biography articles here in wikipedia! I hope you enjoy the new article! Thanks again and God bless you! Jeanette la loquita Martin (y que?) 09;05, 26 March, 2023 (UTC)

Help Regarding Page Creation

Hi Graham87,

Apology for interrupting in your regular work,

Happened to came across your talk page and need your quick help regarding it,

Actually I have created page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:2004_Indian_general_election_in_Uttar_Pradesh which is already pending for review.

All I see is huge backlog of reviewing other articles too along with it which is increasing by day and still the count is quite high, 3400+ as I am writing here.

Please help me out if possible in reviewing the draft or looping in other editor or admin who can quickly review and update me as I am not sure whom to reach out for early review and resolution, otherwise it may take a much longer time for the answer on the draft page.

Please see if my drafted article can be reviewed faster and expedited.

Waiting for your timely response and help whichever is possible at your end.

Thanks and Regards,

@Work2win: I don't deal with articles in this situation and I don't know anyone who does. Asking random users, as you have previously, is highly disruptive; stop queue-jumping. Also see the first paragraph of Wikipedia:Articles for creation and note that you have far too many edits to need the articles for creation process. If you need any further help, please use the teahouse. Graham87 03:42, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for quick response,
Will check the teahouse,
As regarding queue-jumping I had waited for few days then on no response from it then contacted you,
As you are an administrator and here with a good experience so felt asking you as a right person of contact of help. Work2win (talk) 20:14, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

I have seen those edits before and also raised my concern at the Wikiproject:Terrorism. I suggest to rollback all his category edits. I have also seen other questionable edits by him, not only the ones mentioned in the discussions. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 07:04, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

@Paradise Chronicle: Yeah I was just about to do that. If you can, have a go at Listen to Wikipedia; you'll be able to hear and see when I do a mass-rollback of many of his edits. Graham87 07:07, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

I see you reverted an editor pursuing a class assignment. Look at the edit history at Orange County Training School. Cheers! Magnolia677 (talk) 18:54, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

@Magnolia677: Just wow ... thanks for that. Graham87 18:58, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

Orange County Training School

Hi - I am an instructor trying to get students to participate in Wikipedia. I have been using suggested Wiki Education material. As of now, they are just trying to improve links, provide citations, and fix grammar mistakes about pages related to local history. A student has told me that you blocked them for an invalid link. It seems a bit strong to block a person because they added an improper link rather than just reverting the change and instructing them on what policies they didn't follow. Is there a way to unblock this student? Or could you tell me which policies they were violating? The goal behind the project was to improve wikipedia not disrupt it. I'm happy to instruct the students in best practices, I just ask that they receive some grace just like all new wikipedians. Thanks. Cjr100B (talk) 19:31, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
