Mass protections, wow.
Holy hell... 1000 protections in 10 minutes. We're all getting lots of things done this weekend aren't we? Like me making over 2000 edits yesterday... The Thing // Talk // Contribs 01:07, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- 2000 edits in a day! Bloody hell! I only made four clicks to set Twinkle off doing that. It's easier than going through one by one and I'll just reduce to semi for any requests. Good job I pressed the right buttons or I could have deleted them all just as quickly! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:15, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ,
What is "batch protection"? I'm wondering if it's possible to protect what's in transclusions of a template (such as the IPA-fr you just protected) without protecting the entire article it's embedded in, or if it's possible to be notified if transclusions of a template have been modified; say, if someone changed the French pronunciation of an article in the IPA-fr template. I have over a thousand articles on my watch list because of IPA matters, where I care nothing about the article as a whole, and it would be nice to be notified specifically for modifications of IPA transclusions. — kwami (talk) 01:59, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Batch protection is a feature of Twinkle that lets one protect every page linked from the page you're on in just a few clicks rather than manually opening each page. All that's been protected is the templates themselves. It won;t affect any of the pages the template is used on. Does that answer your question? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:02, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, you must have a really, really fast connection :) Diego Grez (talk) 02:06, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'm not sure. Is what you're saying that when you batch protect {{IPA-fr}}, all French IPA transclusions in all articles are protected from editing, but that the rest of the articles are not? That would be perfect, and should perhaps be done with IPA-en and pron-en. A lot of IPA transcriptions are messed up by anon IPs who don't know what they're doing (such as subbing the IPA with respellings, or Spanish with English); given the 11,000 just for English, that's a lot to keep track of. (Logged-in accounts aren't normally a problem, and the few problematic ones tend to become good IPA editors once they understand the system.)
- Also, is it a one-time thing, or do subsequent transclusions inherit the protection?
- Or did you just protect the code of the templates themselves, leaving any text embedded in transclusions of those templates free for editing? — kwami (talk) 02:09, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Only the code of the templates themselves would have been protected. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 02:13, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

What exactly was the purpose of fully protecting the template? They've been around since 2007, where only the 'to do' template has been vandalized only once. By adding such a high-level protection, no one who participates in the Cambodian Wiki Project can actively contribute to the page. This further goes against the norms established over at Wikipedia:Protection policy and also goes against the first criteria mentioned over on Wikipedia:High-risk templates which you cited. "Page protection may be permanently applied to all templates and template redirects that have been identified by the community as being of high risk to Wikipedia". Please consider lowering if not removing the protection level. — Io Katai ᵀᵃˡᵏ 03:20, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Template full protection
Hello, HJ. Is there a reason you full protected a slew of templates? There are a number of non-admins who work on those templates. Wouldn't semi be enough? Thank you. -- Avi (talk) 03:22, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- I protected a load from the first two pages of a database report per a suggestion on RfPP. If anybody wants a specific page unprotected, all they need do is ask and I'll downgrade it or unprotect it. Likewise, if someone give me a linked list of pages that need downgrading/unprotecting, I'll copy it to a sandbox and gladly run a batch unprotection. Lock down on templates
Hello, I am the creator and a primary maintainer of about a dozen major templates you just locked to admin edit only. Since you made these changes, I cannot touch these templates without requesting permission from an admin, which is really inconvenient. Could you please change following templates permissions to semi-perm instead of full:
- Template:WikiProject Food and drink
- Template:WikiProject Wine
- Template:WikiProject Wine/class
- Template:WikiProject Food and drink/class
- Template:Box-footer

Template protection
Location map templates
You've protected them (sysop only) and now I can't add interwikis since I'm not an administrator in enwiki. The trustfull members of the german map creating team now can't change the maps to better quality ones. I suggest to change the protection to autoconfirmed. Me and many of the mapmakers have the templates in our watchlists so that possible vandalism will be detected very fast. --Obersachse (talk) 07:15, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

And, on a personal note, can we drop the bad faith assumption and the pointy new headings for each and every template HJ's protected? TFOWR 10:22, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- And if you'd like to drop the bad attitude. I put my note on here, because when a persons actions causes inconvenience or in my case, prevents you making corrections to a template that is not working properly, it's a reasonable that you would turn to the person responsible. I think you are the person assuming bad faith here, so perhaps you should think twice before making your own pointy comments. Crazy-dancing (talk) 10:37, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Palenque Island Dispute
Dear HJ Mitchell, Sorry, I first posted this on the talk page for Palenque Island, but this looks like the more appropriate place to put it.
Thank you for freezing the page from additional changes. I welcome your advice on this matter, since I'm a bit of a novice on the wiki and don't know all the procedures. I did read that I needed to contact the user before pursuing any other action, so that's why I wrote on the talk page. I was about to submit a request for an admin to look into it when you protected the page. You can understand more about the what is happening by reading my message to Factox1983 on the page's talk section.
If you think it best, I would really appreciate it if you would undo the changes by FactorX1983 while you are looking into the dispute. A quick review of the his posts and ours will show reveal that we have participated in good faith, which for them this is an attempt to use this wiki for their personal grudge. This person has been harassing our employees and customers despite intervention from the courts and the police. They know we are vulnerable here and on WikiTravel, and are trying to scare away buyers of the homes we are building on the island by posting false information - and with the page frozen with their content on it, I worry that they will succeed.
We have tried to contribute to this page in a way that is informative and in keeping with the encyclopedic style, as you will see when you review it. The content they have entered this weekend is false and inappropriate, not in keeping with what we believe is the intent of the wiki. I have total trust in the democratic methods of the wiki, and I eagerly await the results of a review.
Sincerely, Flimoncelli (talk) 23:45, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, I simply protected the page from further changes in the hope that all the people reverting it back and forth could discuss it on the article's talk page. Unfortunately, I cannot revert the page to a previous version because it's against policy and would be a misuse of my administrator access. I'm hopeful that you can reach a solution on the talk page and I can remove the protection early. While you're here, I would suggest you carefully review our conflict of interest guideline and consider being a little less "hands on" with articles on people and companies you're involved with. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:03, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for you reply, HJ. The trouble is, this person is a known to us and has the sole goal of defaming us. He will never come to a consensus. This is bad faith all the way. He is frustrated because his legal dispute was thrown out of court as frivolous so he is using this wiki to do us harm in the eyes of the public.
I have reviewed the conflict of interest page and I am sure that any neutral editor would agree that their edits are a clear conflict of interest and are not in the best interest of Wikipedia. They are posting false information to further a personal grudge and talk about their side of a legal dispute. All we have done is remove content that has this conflict of interest. We have made no attempt to tell our side of the legal story on the page.
Can you advise me on how to go about getting someone to review this? The longer his content is on the page the more damage it does to us. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Flimoncelli (talk • contribs) 00:45, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
- I suppose the best place to go would be the incidents noticeboard, where other editors and administrators will provide input and, if it's deemed necessary, we can discuss reverting the page. Follow this link to start a new section there. Bear in mind that, if you have a potential COI (from your use of "we", I'm thinking you might), you'll need to say so and you'll have to inform the other editor that you're discussing him at the noticeboard. Hi, I'm an uninvolved editor who just happens to have looked at this dispute out of curiosity. It's clear to me that Wikipedia's protection policy is trumped here by the fact that the current version contains potentially libelous statements without proper sources. My bot made large semi-automatical work on interwiki. You can see in its contribution, that there were ~200 edits of the same type (football seasons pages).
When I found mistakenly created pages, I added {{db-a1}} since there is no more proper template for speedy deletion (in some other projects any page can be deleted if it have the only author and this author make the deletion request). I did it under bot's account when I think that any page can be deleted under it's only author request.
Anyway, all of edits (including mistaken ones) were supervised by operator and errors were quickly uncovered. I think that a situation when somebody makes an error and then repairs it is very usual.
Also, I added to my bot's script an existence checking function and it will not create the mistakenly pages anymore. --Emaus (talk) 03:41, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

So I am going to give up talking on the threads. No use wasting my breath to people who aren't willing to listen. I think you did good and nothing should be reverting. I have said that a group of admins should go through to the ones fully-protected and check them for heavy vandalism. If it is present, leave fully-protected, if it isn't, switch to semi-protection. - I sympathise with - hell, I agree with - the concerns about the level of protection, but the angry mob/pitchfork stuff is pissing me off. HJ followed policy-as-written (and written since 2009), in response to a request at RFPP, and gets pilloried. I wanted to get that down as part of any resolution, and the previous attempts at resolution by 67 et al while well-intentioned didn't seem to be moving forward. In the time we've spent arguing the toss over HJ's rouge-ness we could have made a pretty good stab at restoring the previous levels of protection and even, gasp!, looked at which templates had been vandalised: we could have reached a point where everyone agreed that the project was better off now than it had been. Instead we're pissing about attacking HJ for following policy and actioning RFPP requests. Some days I just despair... TFOWR 12:44, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
- This surprises you? It's ANI! Apparently the place has been short of dram lately, so it's a good job some horrible abusive admin followed policy so they didn't have to go cold turkey! What makes me laugh is the number of RfPP requests I've actioned or the number of articles that could have been written or the amount of anything else productive that could have been done. ;) Anyway, I might have an idea on how to at least partially "fix" this, but I've got to run it past Franamax. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:56, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Protection mess-up
Sorry about that. I failed to notice that you had already pc-protected September 11 attacks and I indef semi'd it. I was about to undo that when another user put a pp-semi tag on the page, and about that time I noticed three unconstructive anonymous edits had been reverted between your protection and mine. Still want to give pc-protection a couple of days? Let me know and I'll undo my mess. In general, though, I find that pc-protection on a politically controversial page just adds workload to the regular editors there; it seems to work better on quieter pages. ~Amatulić (talk) 00:54, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- No, I think three hours was enough to see that unprotection isn't going to work well any time soon. It's almost amusing taht we had three different conspiracy theories in as many hours. Anyway, I'm fine with being semi'd. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:58, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

"Please"
Hi again. When I looked at the RFA for Marcus Qwertyus, one of the things you mentioned in your oppose was the word "please". Qwertyus' second edit request didn't pass at first, because an admin expressed the concern that he had forgotten a few important words. However, Qwertyus added those words later, and then his request passed. Why is that word so relevant/important in requests? Also, FD wrote at my talk page during my block, basically advicing me also to write "please" or "could you" in my requests. /HeyMid (contributions) 13:27, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- It's just good manners. Many people think it's rude not to say "please " and "thank you", especially if you want somebody to do something for you and even more on WP where we're all volunteers. I suppose it's only a word, but it's not much effort to type it out. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:25, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
- I think some people just seem to forget that they're interacting with another human being on the other end. I can iamgine how easy it can be to be totally selfish and dissociate yourself when all you're doing is reading words on a screen. Teenagers (not all) often treat this as just another computer game, where they issue commands to the 'receiver' on the screen and start demanding things expecting an instant reply, because "hey! this service exists to accommodate ME!" and if there's no reply then "it must be broken!" Fortunately they grow out of it. ps. this is just a general observation and is in no way directed at you, Heymid. -- Ϫ 15:57, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

When can I go for another RfA
I don't mean to sound anxious to make another go at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship, I just want an administrator's opinion on how much work I still have to do in order to become an administrator. So, how do you think I'm doing? Do I need to improve in any areas? Are there certain things that I should do before becoming an administrator? And when do you think I'd be ready for an RfA? Please don't say later this month, I've decided to wait until at least late October The UtahraptorMy mistakes; I mean, er, contributions 01:00, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- I'll have a look for you at some point. The issue of the moment of course is content work (at least we've moved on from automated edits), so having a few GAs or something that you can point to is always good. The other thing I would say is that I think en.wiki admin has the potential to be one of the most stressful jobs on the planet and it's very, very rare that anybody says thank you, they'd rather drag you to ANI. I think that's part of why RfA is so tough. It has its good moments, though, blocking vandals is always satisfying and it's nice to be able to help people by doling out things like rollback. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:07, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- I haven't done much in the neighborhood of article creation, and in my last RfA they recommended I create a few more articles. So I could do that. Plus I could try to bring my best article (that is, the highest rated one), Silver Reef, Utah, to GA. It'd be difficult, but I could try. Maybe I'll have to wait longer than October, and that's OK. I'm in no rush to become an admin. After all, it's just a set of extra tools. Is there anything you'd recommend I read that talks about how to use the admin tools wisely? A reliable source
I saw a YouTube video in which Miley Cyrus describes some songs from her EP. I am currently doing the EP and plan to use the information she discussed in the video in the article. The video was a form of reward for people who bought her concert tickets using an American Express card. Is it reliable? - If it's an "official" video and it was published on YouTube by AmEx or her record company, you might be all right, but you need to be careful. It could easily be a copyvio, which is why it's generally advised to avoid YouTube like the plague. If you're certain it's legit and you can't find it anywhere other than YouTube, then use {{cite web}}. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 11:20, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

A Query
Hello my friend, I have aware for some time that certain Wikipedians, for one reason or another, have been harassed or even worse, identified by an angry somebody-or-other. Whilst this has been swirling around in the mists of my conscience, I am also well aware that I once uploaded a picture of myself (albeit ammended slightly) onto Wikipedia (not the Commons, just this branch). I have observed the quantity of vandalism to my userpage, and it has always occured to me that the picture and the corresponding introduction of myself may not be an altogether clever idea. Whilst some Wikipedians are fine with showing and describing who they really are, I'm not sure my main activity (when I have time) as an RC Patroller makes this altogether wise. In short, may it be deleted for now? Very best regards, Orphan Wiki 21:36, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- I've deleted the image, is that what you wanted? From a personal perspective, I'm quite open about my real name on my userpage, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable uploading a photo of myself. I suppose it depends a lot on the areas you work in. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:41, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
- Many thanks, much appreciated. :) Yes, the image of myself I feel now was a tad risky, or maybe I'm just paranoid, but I feel somewhat more secure now. Not that anything had happened, I was just being cautious. Working on anti-vandal related stuff comes with many angry attacks on userpages, and thus an image may not be a grand idea. Really appreciate the rapid response. :) Orphan Wiki 21:45, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
