Rollback granted
Hi Hummerrocket. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Widr (talk) 20:11, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
Pending changes reviewer granted
Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.
Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

You're relatively new--that's fine, but please ask yourself what the point could be of warning an already blocked user. Thank you, Drmies (talk) 03:36, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Drmies: I had used Huggle, and when I saw the edit I simply reverted and warned it. There was no indication of whether the user was already blocked or not, or else I wouldn't have done that. Hummerrocket (talk) 14:15, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Your revert of my counter-vandalism efforts
Hi Hummerrocket,
You recently reverted my edit on Otávio Henrique Santos, and left me a template message on my talk page.
The edit I reverted, by an IP user, contained the text, "Dan is a malaka", in the WP:LEAD portion of the page. As this text has seemingly no reference to the article, and the word "malaka" is usually used as an offensive slang term, this edit is quite obviously vandalism.
I would appreciate some further insight into why my revert was undone.
--HunterM267 ❯ talk 18:46, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Hunterm267: Apologies. I am using Huggle, and I'm quite new to it, so I intended to revert the vandal, not you, but before I could I already reverted it. I hope you understand and thank you for your contributions. :) Hummerrocket (talk) 18:49, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- I understand, thank you for clearing it up. For what it's worth, I've found great luck with WP:TW - something worth checking out if Huggle is causing some problems. Happy editing. --HunterM267 ❯ talk 18:52, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Hunterm267: Thank you; I appreciate it. I've used Twinkle in the past and I may return to it as you suggest if Huggle is problematic. Hummerrocket (talk) 18:54, 9 October 2017 (UTC)
The Marketer (Building) Deleted Unjustly
Hummerrocket, a different admin deleted the page I had created to show the new building Empower MediaMarketing built (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:The_Marketer_(Building)&action=edit&redlink=1). The page was initially flagged for promotional content that I noted as a placeholder and quickly fixed. I believe that everything on the page then met Wikipedia's guidelines, however it was still deleted. Upon my inquiry to the admin, I was just told it was obviously spam. However, I provided sources for the information and made sure that the copy fit the standards of other similar building pages. Please review the case and let me know if this is something that can be overturned or if there is something that i need to do to fix the page before it can be re-activated. Arachlow (talk) 17:24, 10 October 2017 (UTC)Arachlow
- @Arachlow: Could you please provide me the administrator who deleted your page, along with a draft of your page in your sandbox? Hummerrocket (talk) 21:17, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
@Hummerrocket, after additional admins contributed to my cause, i have found that the page was correctly deleted as i, with a lack of knowledge of the processes of Wikipedia, did not properly follow the guidelines. I plan on taking a fresh look at the page and going through the afc process to request the page and avoid potential COI. I have dug further through those guidelines and I plan on contributing to Wikipedia only through the addition of facts and to avoid "marketing language" and COI as other admins pointed out. I now understand why the initial admin had such an adverse reaction and I appreciate the help other admins provided. Arachlow (talk) 13:32, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
VDL Nedcar
I am reverting your change to VDL Nedcar. A Limited liability company "is the United States-specific form of a private limited company." VDL Nedcar N.V. is a naamloze vennootschap.
- Ok. Please make sure to add a new section on talk pages, though. Hummerrocket (talk) 17:15, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think there's any need for a new section on talk pages. 202.144.187.248 (talk) 10:44, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Counter-Vandalism Unit Academy
CVU Academy Graduate | |
On behalf of the Counter-Vandalism Unit Academy, congratulations! You have successfully completed all assignments and have now graduated from the Academy. You completed your final exam with a score of 95% and no major issues arose during your 7-day monitoring period – well done! Further information on your achievement can be found here. It's been a pleasure to work with you these past few weeks. I'm fairly new to this CVUA thing, so I hope you've gained at least something from my ramblings. Counter-vandalism is an important behind-the-scenes task on Wikipedia, and throughout the course I appreciated your interest towards it. As always, if you have any questions, you are always welcome to leave a message on my user talk page. See you around, Mz7 (talk) 21:50, 20 October 2017 (UTC) |
Water Polo
Dear Colleague
I appreciate you must be from the US, and I from the UK. But the use of offense/offence and defense/defence is a. not good English and b. will put off and confuse many non-American readers. 'S versions' of such word pairs are verbs and 'c versions' are nouns, as in 'practise/practice' and 'advise/advice'. For example, would you go to 'practicing solicitor for advise'?
Best wishes

- @81.159.40.77: Thank you for the clarification. However, be sure to provide an edit summary whenever you make edits like these, or else it will be considered vandalism. The reason why I warned you is because you kept re-adding the same information without an explanation, so be sure not to do that in the future. Hummerrocket (talk) 20:51, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

EERA
Hi there, I tried to put out some information yesterday on the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). I am not a wikipedia pro - so I probably didn't do it justice, probably to much cut and paste from the webpage. :)
I could get some help to rewrite it. The reason I think it should be on wikipedia is because EERA represents more than 175 European research institutions, ie. 55 000+ researchers working to promote low carbon energy solutions in Europe. Thus it has impact on research funding and also solutions that are important for European citizens. It is a key player people should know about. They are based in Brussels and work actively towards the European Comission and national institutions to make sure that the research efforts on a specific area is coordinated - for more impact. EERA represents all the mayor research institutions such as Fraunhofer, SINTEF, VTT, TNO etc. who do research on future sustainable energy solutions and innovations. Best regards,
- Hello. Here at Wikipedia, the articles have to be in a neutral, unbiased tone, and certainly cannot be advertising. See WP:NPOV. Therefore, when you create the article, you have to make sure you are writing in a neutral format and that you are also not copyrighting the work. Otherwise, your article will be speedily deleted. Why are you reverting changes made to Steve Laury's wiki page?
Steve is a personal friend of mine and he is getting frustrated that every time we change the content, you seem to be changing it back. Please clarify what we need to do so that changes are not rolled back. Thx ~
- @76.176.2.80: Please read WP:COI. Edits from friends especially are strongly discouraged on Wikipedia, so you actually have less of a right to edit the page. If you would like to request an edit to the article, you should do so in the talk page of the article. However, what you are adding right now are quotes that are both irrelevant and inappropriate. Therefore, I suggest that you refrain from your edits to his page. Hummerrocket (talk) 01:12, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewing
Hello, Hummerrocket.
I've seen you editing recently and you seem knowledgeable about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. |
- @Insertcleverphrasehere: Hello, I would be truly interested in obtaining the New Page Reviewer right. I was declined a month ago due to my lack of page quality experience, but since then I have put a greater effort towards that, rather than just speedily deleting articles. Hummerrocket (talk) 16:31, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
- Glad to see that you haven't been soured by being declined the first time. Sorry for not getting around to replying before you applied again at PERM. I am glad to hear that you are keen on helping out, but I will note that NPP focuses far less on CSD and PROD than it did before ACTRIAL started (the rate of true garbage is significantly down). You also don't need to feel like you are obligated to review anything; if you don't feel 100% confident, do the stuff you are confident about and then leave it as 'unreviewed' for another reviewer to look over. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 18:38, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer granted
Hello Hummerrocket. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.
- URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
- Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
- Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
- Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Alex Shih (talk) 21:00, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

Furqan Rizwan (talk) 21:27, 23 November 2017 (UTC) |
- @Furqanrizwan: Thank you for the barnstar! However, the article you created looks to only promote the company that you are writing about. In order for it to not be deleted, you have to ensure that it is written in a neutral, unbiased tone. See WP:NPOV. In addition, make sure to include reliable sources to confirm the validity of the organization, rather than just directories and profiles that are there right now. Best of luck, Hummerrocket (talk) 21:32, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

UCL
Hi, I would be grateful if you can explain what is not neutral about "ranked as one of the leading universities in the world" in this context. UCL's average ranking across the major global rankings is within the world top 15 (higher in a number of other rankings). I also think reference to national rank is redundant, if it's one of the highest ranked in the world it obviously is in the UK as well. Thanks.88.98.220.49 (talk) 19:53, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
- @88.98.220.49: Hello; thank you for your contributions. The content that you added wasn't wrong, it's just that the word "leading" is slightly biased, and therefore "top" had been used because it is more quantitative. Looking back, though, I shouldn't have warned you, so I'll delete the warning on your user talk page. You can still make the edit, but without the word "leading." Administrators' newsletter – December 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).
- Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.
- Wikimedians are now invited to vote on the proposals in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey on Meta Wiki until 10 December 2017. In particular, there is a section of the survey regarding new tools for administrators and for anti-harassment.
- A new function is available to edit filter managers which can be used to store matches from regular expressions.
- Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is open until Sunday 23:59, 10 December 2017 (UTC). There are 12 candidates running for 8 vacant seats.
- Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
- The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.
ArbCom 2017 election voter message
Hello, Hummerrocket. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter
Backlog update:
- The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
- Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!
Outreach and Invitations:
- If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with:
{{subst:NPR invite}}
. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.
New Year New Page Review Drive
- A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
- Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.
General project update:
- ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
- The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
- To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Thank you for making a report about Truongphan123 (talk · contribs · block log) on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, it appears that the editor you reported may not have engaged in vandalism, or the user was not sufficiently or appropriately warned. Please note there is a difference between vandalism and unhelpful or misguided edits made in good faith. If the user continues to vandalise after a recent final warning, please re-report it. Thank you. — Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 18:26, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Coffee: Thank you for the notice. However, from my knowledge, this user is clearly not here to contribute to an encyclopedia. I've reported more vandalism-only accounts than I can remember, and so far the administrators have easily blocked these accounts, even after making one/two non-constructive edits. Maybe this time around I was a bit too harsh and realize it was a test edit, although it was done a second time even after a warning. In general, if the user has done some vandalism, even if not 3-4 instances, I have found it sufficient enough to report it. (I myself am a CVUA instructor.) Thank you. Hummerrocket (talk) 18:35, 24 December 2017 (UTC)
hi can you explain the warning for speedy deletion
the page I'm talking of is Dnipropetrovsk Medical Institute of Traditional & Nontraditional Medicine. I already stated in the article that the university is recognised worldwide. Please explain your problem with it so I can improve the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osmanelmais (talk • contribs) 16:12, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Osmanelmais: Well, you changed it to at least prove that it is notable. But before there was no claim of being recognized so it just seemed like an institution with no claim of significance other than being listed in a directory. However, it is now fine. I'll remove the tag. Hummerrocket (talk) 17:01, 25 December 2017 (UTC)
Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology
Just a friendly heads up on Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology. I declined your speedy deletion request on this article. You had asked for deletion based on no context, but A1 explicitly says that if the title combined with a web search can tell you what the subject is, then A1 is not appropriate. You also asked for A7, but that explicitly excludes educational institutions. You might want to take a second to review the speedy deletion criteria before tagging more articles. New Years new page backlog drive
Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!
We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!
The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.
Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

Eva Morris edits
Hello there, when I edited Eva Morris' 'known for' bit on her page my edit was factually correct. Both the '3rd Millenium' and the '21st Century' do start on 1/1/2001, not 2000. I know, you would think that they do, and I only recently discovered this, but it's true. Proof: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21st_century https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_millennium
Just for future reference! Regards, Elliott :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elliott M (talk • contribs) 18:06, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Elliott M: For all I know you may be correct. That's not why I reverted your edit. I did that because the way that you implemented it in the article was inappropriate, as if you were talking. If you can adjust the edit without adding "!" or "Correction:" that would be wonderful. Cheers! Hummerrocket (talk) 19:04, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
Hey man my justification for the inappropriate editing thing with 'Correction' is that I am literally brand new to wiki editing and was hoping that someone would stumble across my 'Correction' comment and adjust it as I didn't know how to do it, so sorry. And fyi even though you reverted the edit, someone ELSE edited the page to 'Known for
World's oldest person 1999-2000', and that may be right or wrong, but I'm no longer bothered about changing it, it's ok. Oh and by the way, I have edited Violet Brown's wiki page to add an interview and I pasted the URL as plain text and not a hyperlink. I quoted something she said about 'Hard work' in an interview and then wrote the URL to the interview as plain text, could you please make the 'Hard Work' quote a reference, and then make the plain text a hyperlink and add it to the sources at the bottom please? I don't know how to. What I wrote is: 'When an interviewer asked Brown 'what is your secret to long life?', she replied "Hard work". The interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN2tbLYo7Ag&t=50s' but wrote the URL as plain text. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violet_Brown — Preceding unsigned comment added by Elliott M (talk • contribs) 20:46, 10 January 2018 (UTC)

Acclaim = unanimous?
Hi Hummer, re: this edit, I was confused by your explanation, although I didn't revert you, because I understood you were fixing another editor's attempt at puffing up Padukone's performance summary. Acclaim doesn't mean unanimous praise, since there's no such thing as unanimous (or universal) praise. Although typically when we say something was acclaimed, we mean that the good response significantly outweighed the bad. Such a summary would have to be attributed to a reliable source, which it was not. Anyway, just wanted to clarify. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 06:14, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Cyphoidbomb: Hey, yeah I just used the wrong word because I was rushing through the edit summary a little bit. What I meant to say was that it was an unsourced claim that didn't have much support from the critical response section. Instead of saying that, for some weird reason, I picked "unanimous." Thanks for letting me know though. :) Cheers, Hummerrocket (talk) 19:32, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

- Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.
- A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.
- The Arbitration Committee has enacted a change to the discretionary sanctions procedure which requires administrators to add a standardized editnotice when placing page restrictions. - † Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.
- The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
- Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
- A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
- A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.
- CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
- The edit filter has a new feature

Backlog update:
- The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
- We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!
New Year Backlog Drive results:
- We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!
General project update:
- ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
- Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

ACTRIAL:
- ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Subject-specific notability guidelines
- The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies. A further discussion is currently taking place at: Can a subject specific guideline invalidate the General Notability Guideline?

- Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
- Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
- The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
- The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.
- There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.
- The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.
- A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018
ACTRIAL:
- WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.
Deletion tags
- Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.
Backlog drive:
- A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.
Editathons
- There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
Paid editing - new policy
- Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.
Subject-specific notability guidelines
- The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
Not English
- A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.
News
- Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.

- Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
- Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.
- A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.
- In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Wikipedia policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
- A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.
- Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
- Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon ( ) in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
CVUA
I would like to join the CVUA as I want to be better at reverting vandalism (I have already learned Twinkle) and to have a mentor as I was recently blocked for being a jerk. Thank you. RandNetter96 (Talk) (Contributions) 20:07, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
- @RandNetter96: Hello, thank you for expressing interest in CVUA. Unfortunately, at this time, I am not accepting new requests for training. Perhaps you could ask one of the other trainers if they are willing to train you, and if they don't have an open slot you can wait until there is. Sorry, Hummerrocket (talk) 21:34, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
Counter-vandalism training
Hi Hummerrocket, I am interested in counter-vandalism training and it appears that you have a slot open. I am also in the Eastern time zone, and have plenty of time for training. I am currently in the process of reading the suggested articles and am eager to get started. I look forward to hearing from you. Coryphantha Talk 22:18, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Coryphantha: Hello, sorry for the delay. Sure, I am willing to train you, but I would like to let you know that from June 20th to July 8th (2018) I will not be very active since I will be on vacation, and I doubt there will be good Internet access at my location, but it is still possible I can pop in. However, if you are still interested, we can start now and get as far as we can and resume when I return, or else you may ask Mz7 or Vermont as well. Knowing this, do you want me to create your academy page? Hummerrocket (talk) 20:44, 17 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Hummerrocket: Thanks for getting back to me, I didn't mind the delay. Why don't you go ahead and create my academy page, assign some reading or something to that effect and I can get a head start getting familiar with things. I'm sure there are a mountain of things to learn. I'm not in any hurry and in our family we just happen to have lots going on during that time as well. Thanks again. Coryphantha Talk 03:55, 18 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Coryphantha: Ok, I created your page at User:Hummerrocket/CVUA/Coryphantha. You can start the first assignment there. Cheers, Hummerrocket (talk) 13:14, 18 June 2018 (UTC)

- @Hummerrocket: Just checking in, I'm sure you have a lot to do after returning from vacation. When would you like to resume? Coryphantha Talk 18:43, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Coryphantha: Yes, I actually had left a follow up question on the academy page before I went on vacation. If you could answer that first then we can resume the course. Hummerrocket (talk) 22:03, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
- @Hummerrocket: I'm so sorry, I had no idea you were waiting for me next. And here I was waiting for the next assigment, I'll get right on it. Coryphantha Talk 22:47, 14 July 2018 (UTC)
CVU
Hello, I would like to be trained into the CVU. I am a rollbacker on Wikipedia and the vast majority of my edits since day one have been fighting vandalism. Snidester (talk) 11:51, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Snidester: Sure, I'll be more than happy to help! I've created your page at User:Hummerrocket/CVUA/Snidester. You can start your first assignment there. Hummerrocket (talk) 21:20, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Hummerrocket: I have completed the assignment. Snidester (talk) 19:30, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Hummerrocket: I may have to put the assignment on a hiatus for a bit of time. Hopefully I can get back to it soon. Snidester (talk) 23:26, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Snidester: Sure, no problem. Thanks for letting me know. Hummerrocket (talk) 00:12, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

- @Snidester: Sure, whenever you'd like. Welcome back! Hummerrocket (talk) 00:52, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.12 30 July 2018
|
Hello Hummerrocket, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!
- June backlog drive
Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.
- New technology, new rules
- New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
- Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
- Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
- Editathons
- Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
- The Signpost
- The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

Administrators' newsletter – August 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).
- After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.
- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.
CVU RafaelS1979
Hi,
I would like to know if you could train me for the Counter vandalism unit?
Regards,
RafaelS1979 (talk) 23:54, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
- @RafaelS1979: Hello, I have created your Counter Vandalism Academy page at User:Hummerrocket/CVUA/RafaelS1979. You can begin on the first task that I have put there. Hummerrocket (talk) 14:00, 30 March 2018 (UTC)
- Ok thanks for accepting my request, I'll take a look. RafaelS1979 (talk) 17:25, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Hummerrocket, I would like if you could help getting the rollback permission (and help me eventually with Huggle) that I was denied about one week ago. Also can I say that I'm a CVU member and place a tag in my user page? F RafaelS1979 (talk) 16:29, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- @RafaelS1979: Sure, you may put a userbox/tag on your page that you are a CVU member, although a student tag may be better. As we continue through the course, there will actually be a point where I will ask you to apply for the rollback right, and at that point you will likely have the experience neccessary to attain that right. It's unlikely that in a week you will receieve the right, so the assignment is pretty midway in the course. Hummerrocket (talk) 00:37, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- In fact I applied for the rollback right, pending changes review and new pages reviewers but I was only able to obtain the pending changes reviewer right. I applied for the three status before starting the vandalism course. RafaelS1979 (talk) 23:40, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- @RafaelS1979: I cannot guarantee that you will obtain the new page reviewer right from this course, as it only covers speedy deletion over page quality. However, you will have the sufficient rollback experience needed for the right as you progress throughout the course. In fact, the next assignment after your current one is to find and revert vandalism, which in general you should do for the right. Hummerrocket (talk) 20:37, 7 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. Should I apply for a course for new page reviewing? By the way, for the vandalism revert exercise, can I add them as the come along or I have to complete whole exercise at once and saving? I'll take my time as you said and anyway I'll be fairly busy in the next few weeks so it may take some time. Finally can I add examples from the french wikipedia where I'm also very active? RafaelS1979 (talk) 19:41, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
- @RafaelS1979: As of now, unfortunately, there is no course for new page reviewing. It requires that you are knowledgeable in page quality, as in writing an article well and understanding what makes a well written/poorly written article, which no course can accomplish. However, what you can do is on your own gain some knowledge in new page reviewing, and visit WP:AFD to evaluate whether certain articles should stay or not and why. It would be nice to look at articles of your interests, too. For the vandalism exercise, you can add them as they come along instead of just all at once, and you can take your time, thanks for letting me know that you will be busy. You can add examples from the French Wikipedia, but I don't speak French, so please make sure the vandalism is clear for English speakers, or if not just explain it. Thanks, Hummerrocket (talk) 20:57, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks again for your understanding. By the way, I will try to get all my examples from the english wikipedia, I was just asking if it would bother you if I'd get examples for foreign languages, but I know that french is difficult language to learn and understand so I won't put you in a difficult position. RafaelS1979 (talk) 02:02, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- I completed the assignment on warning and reporting. RafaelS1979 (talk) 22:39, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
- I created this discussion here, not to create complications, but to have a better understanding and trying to get a little bit of help. I think you may read it for your future students and regarding my final exam, I'm almost done, but concerning the CSD, I've been denied three times, so I'll leave my current answer and I will complete the two remaining ones. RafaelS1979 (talk) 15:09, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
- I hope you had a great vacation and that you're well-rested! I've completed my final exam, you can take a look at it when you have time. RafaelS1979 (talk) 01:06, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- @RafaelS1979: Ok great, thank you! I will grade it soon, but it may take me some time since I am slightly busy right now in real life, if that is ok. Hummerrocket (talk) 20:57, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- Take your time, I'm not in a hurry. RafaelS1979 (talk) 23:16, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- I was wondering, maybe if you don't have time to correct my final exam, maybe you could ask for someone else to correct it? Maybe it would diminish your workload. Just saying. RafaelS1979 (talk) 20:38, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
- @RafaelS1979: Sure, I will do that. I'm very sorry that I haven't been grading your final exam. The last month or so has unfortunately been quite active for me. Hummerrocket (talk) 03:40, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
- It's okay I understand, the daily grind can be very exhausting and you have a life outside Wikipedia, like we all do. RafaelS1979 (talk) 11:32, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Just a Heads-Up
Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that Coryphantha is currently on a short wikibreak, if you hadn't already noted so - not sure whether it is to take a break from a recent string of irritating editors she's had to deal with or completely unrelated to such.
Yours,
Nosebagbear (talk) 16:22, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
- @Nosebagbear: Ok, thanks for letting me know. Hummerrocket (talk) 14:00, 25 August 2018 (UTC)
Counter Vandalism Training Request

- @Hummerrocket:, could you please keep me in mind when a vacancy arises? Pablothepenguin (talk) 22:57, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2018).

- Optimist on the run → Voice of Clam
Interface administrator changes
- Amorymeltzer • Mr. Stradivarius • MusikAnimal • MSGJ • TheDJ • Xaosflux
- Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.
- Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
- Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says
Deprecated. Use ... instead
. An example isarticle_text
which is nowpage_title
. - Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is
page_age
.
- The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.
I have returned
After 2 months of hiatus, I have returned to Wikipedia. Just letting you know I have not abandoned the CVUA nor Wikipedia, and plan to complete the final course as soon as I finish up with my side project. Snidester (talk) 20:53, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Snidester: Sure, no problem. Take your time with both. Glad to have you back! Hummerrocket (talk) 19:44, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
