ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Vegan scholars

I was looking at the categories vegan activists, do you think it is worth me creating a category for vegan scholars? Or is it just easier to keep all under activists? Psychologist Guy (talk) 21:37, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

I think I'd support something like that. But there's an ambiguity; are we talking about 'scholars of vegan studies', 'scholars whose work addresses veganism' (which will include lots of critics of veganism!), 'Scholars who advocate veganism in their scholarly work' or 'scholars who happen to be vegan'? The last wouldn't be useful; the first would be potentially quite narrow (but may be a valuable subcategory of the larger category). But yes, broadly, I'm supportive. Josh Milburn (talk) 12:02, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
@Psychologist Guy: Sorry, forgot to ping you. Josh Milburn (talk) 12:03, 8 December 2023 (UTC)
You raise valid points. Having thought about for this a long time, I have created Scholars of veganism for academics and scholars who have written about veganism or vegan studies. Those in the category do not have to be vegan themselves, just written about the topic from an academic perspective. I noticed there is an issue with the category veganism activists [1] because some people on that list are not activists they have just written about the topic. I believe this category was needed for the separation for scholars and activists. This is now similar to how we have separate categories for animal rights or welfare scholars and the other for activists. Psychologist Guy (talk) 18:39, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
@Psychologist Guy: Great; no objection from me. I've added it to a few articles, and will try to remember to use it. Hopefully this will also be helpful in getting around the 'are they aren't they vegan' thing we've talked about before, as what matters is whether they write about veganism, not their own practices. Josh Milburn (talk) 19:10, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Emelia Quinn

On 20 December 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Emelia Quinn, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Emelia Quinn argues that "monstrous vegans" have recurred in literature since Mary Shelley's Frankenstein? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Emelia Quinn. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Emelia Quinn), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Begotten

Hello JM, just wanted to let you know that Begotten failed its FA nomination for the third time. Oddly the review seems archived too soon, but that is not the point. Just trying to figure out how to properly get this through cause prose seems to be the issue now. I find it difficult to do that considering Merhige is frustratingly cryptic in all his interviews, leaving out details that FA reviewers have commented on. If you have any suggestions as to how to get this article to finally pass and find a balance of prose I would appreciate it. I am currently alternating between this article and expanding the article on the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre film by pulling information from the Russian Featured Article version (into my separate userspace drafts as per usual). Anyways, I know you are busy and if you are unable to help I completely understand. Paleface Jack (talk) 18:18, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

@Paleface Jack: I'm not surprised that the nomination was archived, but full respect to you for remaining committed to getting the article where it needs to be. I'll aim to finish my review. If the sourcing issues are resolved, it might 'just' be a case of getting the writing up to scratch. I don't think Merhige's interview style should be too much of an issue. It's just about presenting the information we do have as clearly as possible. (Also, I'd love to see a FA on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre!) Josh Milburn (talk) 11:38, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
I am notoriously stubborn as you can tell with the other FA nominations and me continuing to that. I do agree wording and presenting thew info is important, and it is more of a challenge considering how Merhige presents the information in interviews (I honestly would have loved more information on the costume/special effects in addition to some cast interviews but have never found anything on that sadly). I had my own ideas on certain issues with the article and how to fix them up.
In terms of getting The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to FA, I found a version of the article on the Russian Wikipiedia that is Featured status so I have been transfering that into a userspace draft while adding sources with updates to the citation style (Sadly the current state of the article on the English Wikipiedia is has a citation style that is all over the place). I also plan on getting back to my work on the Leatherface article so it eventually gets FA status though that would require collaboration and time. Paleface Jack (talk) 19:48, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Begotten: Costume Design

Hello my friend, just wanted you to know I have been making more improvements to the article little by little. I found a credit that I found interesting, costumes for the film were designed by Celia Bryant who also worked in The Producers (1967), Shaft (1971), and Ganja & Hess (1973). The only source I have found so far that gives her this credit (apart from IMDb) is the film itself, so I am stumped on what to do. Anyways I will keep editing fine-tuning the prose till I deem it worthy of your fine eye. Paleface Jack (talk) 03:40, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Gaz Oakley

Gaz has given up veganism. There was a big backlash in the vegan community on social media against him from vegans. He has deleted mention of "Avant-Garde Vegan" on all of his social media and changed accounts. I left some comments on the talk-page. The issue is that I doubt any WP:RS exist documenting this, unfortunately it means we will be left with an inaccurate article until we have good sources. You may know more about this issue. Psychologist Guy (talk) 02:19, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

@Psychologist Guy: I confess that this is the first I've heard about it. What about the article do you think is inaccurate? Josh Milburn (talk) 22:28, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
@Psychologist Guy: I've lightly updated the article; I see you're right that the YouTube channel and Instagram page aren't using the 'Avant-Garde Vegan' title any more. But I don't know if we need to get into any 'is he vegan' questions. If some decent sources come up further down the line which discuss a move away from veganism, perhaps we could revisit? Josh Milburn (talk) 01:06, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
The article is accurate per sourcing but obviously not accurate per real life. We have to go by sourcing so we cannot insert WP:OR but I do believe in the future when we have referencing it should be updated. A wait and see approach is probably the best thing to do here. A lot of plant-based diet influencers are not vegan (I know some are but the majority are not). I created a plant-based template [2]. Gaz can probably be added to it in the future when we have more references since he has dropped veganism. I am in contact with a lot of vegans and they tell me Gaz has been consuming eggs for a long time.
Based on what I have seen Gaz Oakley has unfortunately received abuse from militant vegans on social media who have sent him a lot of harassment. If you check his video [3] it has nearly 4000 comments and a lot of abusive messages from vegans there, some of which are being removed. People have reached out to Gaz on social media and he has denied identifying as vegan. He doesn't use that term anymore and has changed to just using his name. Psychologist Guy (talk) 01:40, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
The only recent source on Gaz Oakley is a podcast intervieIw done about 2 months ago, it describes him as a plant-based chef and Gaz doesn't mention vegan throughout the entire interview [4], only "plant-based" is used. When there are more sources we can update the article. Psychologist Guy (talk) 01:57, 3 January 2024 (UTC)
@Psychologist Guy: Understood, but I fear I'm missing something. Again: What in the article do you think is inaccurate 'per real life'? Josh Milburn (talk) 02:18, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

@Psychologist Guy: On an unrelated note, I've just created an article for Gregory Tague, which may be worth adding to some navboxes. Also tagging Throughthemind, as you may be interested to learn about a couple of animal-y journals he founded that you may not have heard of. Josh Milburn (talk) 17:14, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't realize you had updated the Gaz article and changed it to former. I agree the article is accurate for now. Hopefully we get more sourcing this year. Thanks for creating the Gregory Tague article, I will add some of his papers to other articles. A brave book I recently came across that was published is called the imperfect vegan by Cat White [5]. She unfortunately will not qualify for a Wikipedia article but if sources do develop I will create it in the future. Psychologist Guy (talk) 02:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. Karen Bradshaw

Just to let you know, next week I will create Karen Bradshaw's Wikipedia article. I noticed you mentioned her in one of your papers on animal property rights [6], I see you mention the work of John Hadley [7]

There isn't a Wikipedia article for animal property rights it redirects to Hadley. Do you think it is worth creating a small article on it? Psychologist Guy (talk) 03:00, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

@Psychologist Guy: I'm certainly not opposed to an article on animal property rights; when I created the redirect, Hadley was 'the' animal property rights guy. In addition to Karen Bradshaw, Hadley, and I, Connor Kianpour has a paper in Politics & Animals. There'll be other stuff out there. And yes, an article on Bradshaw would be excellent. A fun fact is that her book was included in 2022 Grammy gift bag. Josh Milburn (talk) 17:40, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
I will have a go at creating Bradshaw's article, but the article on animal property rights might need more of an expert such as yourself or the user throughthemind. It's hard to find older writers who have touched upon animal property rights. As you say Hadley seems to have been the main guy promoting it. Stephen St. C. Bostock touched upon it very briefly on the topic of zoos. There's a book I purchased called "Respecting Animals" by David S. Favre, he's pretty much against animal rights as he sits in the welfare camp but he came up with the idea of animal living property. He is a Professor of Law. I will probably create his article as well. Psychologist Guy (talk) 22:00, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
@Psychologist Guy: Yes, I'm aware of Favre's work, though I don't think he's really doing the same sort of thing. I think the 'trouble' with animal property rights is that there's oodles of work on animals as property (the property vs. personhood debate is very much entrenched in animal law); the novelty of the animal property rights approach is thinking of animals as owners of property. There's the occasional nod to it in older literature, but mostly (as far as I've seen) just acknowleding it as an interesting philosophical possibility. TFA

Thank you today for Last Gasp (Inside No. 9), introduced (in 2015) as "the fourth episode of the first series of Inside No. 9, and is a free-standing, half-hour comedy about a terminally-ill little girl's birthday. Critics generally agreed that this was a weak episode of a strong series, but one journalist went so far as to describe it as "not funny ... not clever and ... so utterly, irredeemably, naffly silly that it ends up being incredibly irritating and nothing else". Personally, I thought it very funny, but without the depth/originality which characterised the other episodes of the series (it also stars a number of faces which will be familiar to fans of British television)." -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:56, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to   Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Further questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. TFA

Thank you today for The Riddle of the Sphinx (Inside No. 9), introduced (in 2018): "This is a half-hour (very, very black) comedy about cryptic crosswords. I've never attempted a cryptic crossword, and I didn't find the episode particularly funny. Nonetheless, I think it might be my favourite ever episode of my favourite ever TV programme. It is brilliant, and I spot something new every time I rewatch it."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:43, 13 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is   AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion,   BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place,   Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are:   Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points,   Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points,   BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points,   Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and   AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!
