Outflow boundary GA limbo

I seem to have gotten myself into a pickle, for all the right reasons. Someone who made one edit to the outflow boundary article submitted the article for GAN in June. I started a review of the article, mentioning that I could not possibly be the reviewer of the article since I did most of the edits. Then, the person who submitted it for GAN didn't do the requested work, so I compounded the problem by improving its look, content, etcetera. Now the GA template on the page implies I'm the primary reviewer, and I think it's keeping potential reviewers at bay. What can be done here? It's been listed at GA for 9 weeks now, which even for me, is an extraordinarily long time. Thegreatdr (talk) 00:35, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

I responded to your comment on the GA page. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:59, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Please save my nether region

Hi, about a year ago you did an Afd for me since I did not know how. I have just tried doing one all on my own (speedy aren't I?).

The page was "List of Riots" and while I thought I followed the direction on the Wiki help exactly (even used written notes) something didn't come out right.

The AfD tag never appeared on the page top and while I ended up creating the AfD discussion page, and it show on the page history, somehow the AfD has not shown in the log of AfD on the official page.

Would greatly appreciate if you could fix this or (I'm willing to do the work) tell me how I failed when I thought I was so careful.

Thank you,

Fireworks

I saw your msg on wade's page and thought of leaving my two cents.

  • For many fireworks in a singe picture, use a wide angle lens, around 17mm would be good.
  • Use long exposures. Usually around 1s-onwards
  • Use a tripod or beanbag for stability.
  • Just take shots before the fireworks start to capture the whole motion

Hi Julian

I created the page Outlet Property Services over a week ago and it's still not showing when I do a search. It's still in my contributions and each time I have done an edit, I saved the page.

Is there a problem or am I not doing something right?

I look forward to your reply.

Seems you created the page in your userspace (User:Markgraindorge/Outlet Property Services). Only pages in the mainspace show up in default search results, which is why you haven't been able to find it. Once you're done with that article you can use the 'move page' function to move it to the article space. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:12, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

User:Stilltim

Hey,

I was just looking for your opinion on your granting of Autoreviewer access to Stilltim even though he has a long history of creating POV forks. This issue went to an RFC and he seems to have been getting better, but I was still curious as to how you felt about that. Thanks!--Gordonrox24 | Talk 02:18, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, I was honestly unaware that any such issues existed. I saw that the user had created hundreds of seemingly valid articles, but please do link me to the RfC and other relevant discussion. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. –Juliancolton | Talk 02:27, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
here is the RFC. If you look at his talk page he has not archived it and you can see all of the AFD discussions that resulted from his creations. I am not sure how much relevance this has on his recent work though. Thanks--Gordonrox24 | Talk 02:58, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks Julian. I do think it will benefit the project having WP:NP keep his pages monitored. He does seem to be doing great work now though.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 17:45, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Stilltim autoreviewer

I have concerns about your granting of autoreviewer to User:Stilltim. He has been the subject of an RFC/U about creating numerous excessive articles contrary to consensus in the past. Even his recent Deleware articles are massive copy/paste jobs that mostly duplicate each other. That he's filling up the new pages once again is an alarm sounding, we shouldn't just cancel the alarm without investigating whether there is a problem. Gigs (talk) 15:39, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

I've removed the right for now, since a few others have raised similar concerns. I apologize for any inconvenience I've caused; I was honestly unaware of the controversy surrounding this user's articles when I enabled autoreviewer on their account. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:45, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Indeed. At the moment it's looking like it'll be closed as "no consensus" or "keep". I think the nominator's arguments would have been more convincing if he had nominated each article individually, since there is really no precedent to batch-delete 20 GAs and FAs. Oh well, I'll keep an eye on it to see how it turns out. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:36, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
Agreed. Really, not to get all Machievellian, but if you want to put a hit out on an article, you're better off doing test cases, singling out the weakest ones, and then going after the others later per a precedent. Batch article deletions rarely end in a delete, in only because an admin doesn't want to sift through the discussion that way. I have to say though reading through those articles that it's clear gamecruft isn't endemic only to video games... --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 15:41, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I'd be more sympathetic if they were nominated before the became GA/FA's. Aaroncrick (talk) 15:46, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
But GA/FA criteria has nothing to do with notability; it's actually a fairly common occurrence that articles get deleted after getting GA/FA. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk) 15:52, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
It has something to do with compassion. YellowMonkey has spent a hell of a lot of time writing those articles. They may not all meet the inclusion criteria (that's still being hashed out), but remember that we are dealing with people here, not machines.
Can you back up your assertion that it's a "fairly common occurrence" for FAs and GAs to be deleted? Nev1 (talk) 15:55, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I don't know about it being a "common" occurrence, but it has happened. However, more often than not an FA at AfD will be speedily kept. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:56, 6 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm aware it's happened (although I couldn't name any off the top of my head), but to state it's common is an interesting claim, one I would like to see substantiated. Nev1 (talk) 15:58, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Speedy declined --> AfD?

"Typically when I decline a speedy deletion, I ship the article off to a procedural AfD nom." Why? There are all sorts of bad reasons for speedy deletion nominations, and it would surely be better to do a cursory search for sources, some adding of tags and adding WikiProjects to the talk page than sending all the articles to AfD. As far as I'm concerned a "procedural nomination" isn't a valid one. If you can't come up with a reason for deletion that accords with policy, I think the correct response is a speedy close. Fences&Windows 15:45, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Most declined CSDs are borderline in nature, so it's reasonable to request additional feedback via AfD. Such practice is standard as far as I'm aware. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:51, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Weather articles

Hi Julian, it seems you are interested in articles related to weather. A lot of Wikipedia's articles on basic meteorological topics are not very good. I've been gradually working to remove some of the blatant errors and spruce up the writing. I don't know whether you have any formal training but if you'd like to pitch in that would be great. 02:29, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the note. Yes, meteorology articles in general could use some work (as could most Wikipedia articles!). I've noticed that articles on specific events (eg. Hurricane Fabian, Typhoon Paka, 1994 Christmas nor'easter) tend to be of higher quality than the more broad topics (Climate, Severe weather, etc). I'm more experienced with the former group, but I'd be happy to help. The problem is that meteorology is inevitably a boring topic, so it's hard to write "brilliant" prose on the subject. Still, factual errors inaccuracies to be dealt with. You might want to post at WT:METEO specifying which articles you find need the most work, as I know there are actually quite a few users there who can turn crap to excellence in a matter of hours. Good luck, and thanks for your efforts so far. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 02:41, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

Sysop aSsistance Solicited

Julian, got a situation I've not faced before that I suspect an admin can handle.

I reverted some page blanking by an anon of someone's user page. Then the anon comes back and posts on my user page that she is the user, but that she's lost control of the account, and wants her personal info out of public view. First problem is determining if she is the actual user. Perhaps you can verify that, but of course I cannot. But I'm inclined to believe her. Another issue is this: The actual user posted that she's 15 years old, and included a photo of herself and much personal info. I'm willing to take a chance that this anon is pulling our leg just to be on the safe side and permanently delete the page. I explained to her that, even if it's blanked, anyone can restore it at will, unless it's permanently blanked.

So I'll leave it to you. The anon's talk page is User talk:72.222.147.24, and the User page in question is User:Missalicia1994. Let me know if I've been unclear about anything. Unschool 03:10, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

I moved North Fringe back to North Fringe of Bristol, a title which gives some necessary geographical context. Although the term "North Fringe" is in local use, that is only because the city of Bristol (of which it is a "fringe") is taken as understood. I'll be away for a few days so will return to this next week. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:25, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

But we don't have another article titled "North Fringe", so the disambiguation is unnecessary. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:26, 10 September 2009 (UTC)
True, but North Fringe of Bristol is a clearer title anyway, and preferable to North Fringe (Bristol) which I admit may well have been contrary to a naming guideline somewhere (though I can't put my finger on it right now). Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:38, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. O Fenian (talk) 23:01, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

SWGIT

Hi Juliancolton. I would like you to reconsider the deletion of the SWGIT article. It should be obvious from the article that there is no personal/business gain as this is not a company, but rather a law enforcement best standards scientific working group set up by the FBI. No products/services are offered, no products/services are endorsed. Also, several other SWG groups have Wiki pages.

Seems we have run into problem after problem trying to put SWGIT on Wiki, most likely due to none of the members being fluent in Wikiese. Could you help us edit the article to make it conform more to Wiki standards? Swgit (talk) 11:52, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I deleted the article in accordance with the proposed deletion policy, which states that if a nominated article goes uncontested for a week, it may be speedily deleted. The original nominator cited concerns that the article was promotional in nature; therefore, it will likely take significant work to bring the article up to standard. I'd be happy to restore the deleted content into your userspace, to allow for you to address any issues in your own time; it could then be moved to the mainspace when ready. Would this be satisfactory?
On a side note, you seem to use terms such as "we" and us". Please be aware that role accounts for businesses and companies are not allowed, and may be blocked, as in general one account should be used by just one person.
Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 13:32, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

I've got to say, I'm surprised to see you buckle to off-site canvassing. What sort of time period were you thinking of before allowing a renom ? Because I'd send it to AFD right now. --Cameron Scott (talk) 10:00, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Once a discussion is polluted by chronic canvassing/sockpuppetry, it simply becomes impossible to form a fair and meaningful consensus. Not "buckling" by any means. The mop at the Commons

JC, I was wondering, since you have the mop over at the Commons what you participated in before being considered for the mop? I am looking to expand my usefulness and know that I need to start working at the Commons more often first off, but what types of non-Admin tasks should I look at working on more to both help out and possibly make myself look more useful. Thanks --Admrboltz (talk) 14:24, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

For the most part, I did a bunch of categorization and general cleanup, and in the weeks prior to my RfA I did some flickr reviewing and participated in deletion requests. Commons also looks for some degree of interaction with the community, so a few posts at AN, VP, etc. would definitely help. You might also want to patrol NewFiles from time to time to check for potential copyvios and other similar issues. It's great that you're considering becoming more active at Commons – we need all the help we can get at the moment! Hope this helps, –Juliancolton | Talk 15:17, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Yeah, I figured about AN and VP - and I have asked for the Flickr reviewer tag so I can help out with those as well. New files is tough sometime, so many look like professional photos, but could very well be regular images... --Admrboltz (talk) 17:03, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Hardy Boys

Dear JC, I have been deleteing those sections of the Hardy Boys page, because the books are one of my favorite series, and I don't like the the sections discussing homosexuality and homoromance. I find it insulting since they are well-written and popular book characters, and they are not gay or show interest in their friends or each other. They just work as a team and help each other out. They are supposecd to be only about a year apart, so they get along well, and fight seldomly. I myself am a year older than my younger brother and we get along and are close and rarely fight. He is one of my best friends. So just to say JC, that I don't appriciate those crude oppinions on the Hardy Brother characters. So I would be greatly enjoy if you would let me remove those section for the sake of myself and other avid Hardy Boys readers looking for info on the book series. Thank you!

Bleed for Me requested move

Why did you remove my requested move (Bleed for Me (Dead Kennedys song)Bleed for Me) saying it should be discussed? I don't see why it's controversial, there's only two pages so a disambiguation page is clearly unnecessary, and just looking at the page contents (Bleed for Me (Dead Kennedys song) vs Bleed for Me (Black Label Society song)) makes it rather obvious which one is more deserving of the non-dab page. -Joltman (talk) 23:57, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Uncontroversial requests are completed only if they are indisputably minor and uncontroversial; my experience at requested moves suggests some might object to such a move. –Juliancolton | Talk 00:00, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Wanted you to know...

Hi, Julian. I am going to remove the autoreviewer right to User:Dr. Szląchski which you granted on Aug 29. Besides being under the 75 article minimum, all of the articles were copy-pastes. Although the majority were public domain, there has been some past history of copyright violation. I'm not comfortable with this user having autoreviewer yet. Let me know if you disagree. Cheers. CactusWriter | needles 07:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Deleted article

I was disappointed to find "Triple Seven" article deleted. I wanted to confirm that, indeed, there is some special significance in the "lucky 777" combination in gaming. I've found plenty of confirmations, including this DELTED article. Is there any way to see the deleted article? I'm interested in the history - why 777 has some special "lucky" meaning? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.98.166.154 (talk) 10:52, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

It was deleted in accordance with the proposed deletion policy; basically, if a nominated article goes uncontested for seven days, it may be deleted at any time. In this case, the original nominator cited notability concerns, which, upon my own uninvolved review, I tend to agree with. If you create an account, I can move a copy of the deleted content into your userspace to allow for you to bring it up to standard in your own time. Would that be satisfactory? –Juliancolton | Talk 13:49, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

I think our highest priority right now is to create a handful of shining examples of completed and matured outlines to use as examples when demonstrating their purpose to the skeptical folks. Numbering on JMA Tropical Depressions

Some users has been insisting of adding designations to JMA Tropical Depressions but they can't provide any evidence that the Tropical Depressions are designated as such by an official agency. For example, nowhere outside Wikipedia indicates that Auring is designated as Tropical Depression 01. Even worse, these designations are largely different from those can be found in SAREP issued by JMA(RSMC Tokyo). This creates a very confusing situation. If there is no official designation associated to a particular system, then leave it as such. This has been the case for extratropical lows, thunderstorm, tornado and many other severe weather events.[4] You won't have extratropical low 1, extratropical low 2, extratropical low 3, etc. (unless a certain official agency decides to do so in the future) Tropical Depression is nothing different from other forms of severe weather events. If there is an official designation, use it. If there is not and the Tropical Depression has sufficient impact to warrant its own article, then use relevant descriptions such as place, month, festival, year, etc. whichever appropriate. This is the encyclopediac way to refer to them. Please join the discussion in [5].Typhoon2009 (talk) 14:16, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the West Pacific naming conventions. However, while your argument sounds valid, continuously edit warring is not acceptable. Crop circle protection

Hello. It appears that the sudden avalanche of vandalism on the Crop circle article is due to the Wikipedia article gaining a higher profile via Google's use of crop circles in today's logo [6]. Since these click-able, search-able logos do not typically last longer than a day, the page protection probably will not be needed after about 24 hours. You might want to reduce the protection length, but that is entirely up to you. Also, I removed the "small" parameter from the template so that all the extra visitors explicitly know why they cannot edit this article on "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit" plus then they can see that the protection is only temporary. If you feel that my action here was improper, please feel free to revert it at your discretion. Thanks, — Kralizec! (talk) 14:21, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I took that into consideration, but I figured it's best to leave it protected for a few more days to avoid any residual vandalism. I don't object to you or another admin removing the protection before it expires, however, if they feel it's necessary. Re. the template, I generally use the |small= for reasons outlined in this essay, but again, no big deal. Cheers, –Juliancolton | Talk 16:33, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

User:NarSakSasLee

Hi there. I see you gave User:NarSakSasLee rollback rights yesterday. You might want to keep an eye on him, I've had two cases in the last two days of him reverting perfectly valid geotags with no explanation in the edit summary. Turns out "he thought they were gibberish" - I guess this is more likely to be a problem with a non-native speaker of English, it's harder for him to distinguish genuine gibberish from tech-speak gibberish. All resolved amicably enough now, but I thought I'd mention it; I don't know if there's been other examples that the "victim" hasn't noticed. 82.3.241.225 (talk) 16:18, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. You're right, that is worth keeping an eye on. The good news is that he technically didn't use rollback for the reverts in question, but I'll leave them a note if I see any more questionable actions. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 16:20, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Can you review Star Trek (film)

This morning there was a category added to this page that classified it as a reboot film. I searched Star Trek reboot and found several reliable sources that classify the movie as such. I sourced four of them OC Weekly, Mtv, HighDef digest and The Examiner. User:Darrenhusted insists that because the director isn't quoted as saying it's a reboot we can't include it. If you look at the sources in the page history even the titles themselves classify the movie as a reboot. I am loathe to violate 3rr and the other editor is very close to. Follow-up to mentor request on 7 September

Did you have a chance to look at the review of 2009 Giro d'Italia for GA? The user told me earlier today (in US Eastern Daylight Time) that he had been mugged and his computer had been stolen the day after the seven day grace period expired to correct the article upon my suggestions. I failed this article and the two others because the GA Procedures stated this. The user (Nosleep) as I expected was upset at my decision, but I was not responsible for him getting mugged and having his computer stolen. All I was doing was following the WP:GAN rules set when I put those articles on hold. Your thoughts on this. Chris (talk) 01:22, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Since he also did some other vandalism yesterday (see here) it might be worth looking into yet another SPI on ScienceGolfFan (unless the school can be blocked by just blocking the account). -- Soap Talk/Contributions 01:25, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Possible mistake

Was this a mistake? Debresser (talk) 12:36, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Nope. I was removing links to userspace in a few hundred articles. It looks like AWB botched the edit summary, but other than that the edit seems fine. Thanks for the note. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:17, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
You removed the forward slash in the second ref tag (</ref> -> <ref>), making the page look like this. Debresser reverted - Kingpin13 (talk) 15:20, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Julian

The article I created a few weeks ago still is not showing. What am I doing wrong?!

My messages do not sem to reach you either so am trying again :-)

I look forward to your reply.

MarkG 14:59, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I actually responded to your initial query, but it seems you missed it. I think the issue is that you created your article in your user-space rather than the article-space; only pages in the later namespace appear in Special:Search. Once it gets moved into the article-space, it should be visible immediately. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 15:24, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Julian

Sorry I missed your reply! And I have failed the move... I opened the page in user, clicked the 'move' tab and renamed the article Article:Outlet Property Services' but it remains in my contributions. So asking for your help again so that I can do this. Sorry for being so useless!

Hi. I'm afraid I'm going to have to respectfully decline; I know little of the subject, and some might accuse me of a having a COI since I protected the page. I'll be happy to weigh in on any discussions if necessary, however. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:40, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
Too bad. It seems that when the word Microsoft attaches to an article a whole bunch of people gets very anxious to apply different standards to reality. I do hope someone with an objective view from the outside can help. If you were to contribute to the discusions that might definitly help. hAl (talk) 17:58, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I don't see what full protection is going to resolve. Four or five editors have repeatedly explained to HAl (talk · contribs) what the problem with his edits is, and yet he continues to revert them back in. In a week's time there's still going to be the same consensus that the edits he's making are unacceptable. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 18:26, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

If edit warring resumes after the protection expires, then blocks may be in order. Until then protection seems like the most appropriate course of action. –Juliancolton | Talk 18:27, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I am familiar with the topic, that's the anime Dauros is a character from. If you want to delete the character, I'd say redirct it to the anime he's from. When I go to put it in there is gives me a warning that I shouldn't start the page again. Is it okay for me to simply put a redirect on the page and then let people talk about it if they disagree? Most of the newspapers I know of only go back as far as the mid-1980's for on-line refs., and I'd like to find something that went back as far as maybe the 1960's. Know of a site? — Ched :  ?  14:33, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

There are quite a few sites with good historical weather data. I like this site, which goes back to Jan. 1, 1946. Here's another useful one. Re: this comment at Requested Moves. On its own, Pastor Theo was generally a very constructive and useful account. It would have been next to impossible to find anything suspicious before ArbCom's desysop. Of course, there's a chance that any and every account is a sock of a blocked user, but you just have to AGF. Hi, I've requested to User talk:Xeno that they be deleted. The task is too huge (and mind numbingly boring) to take on alone. I tried fleshing a few out and even had a few DYKs out of them and some de stubbed but the sheer amount needing doing is too much,. As there clearly aren't many editors working on them it is best to salvage what has been edited and just delete the sub stubs. Is this relisted AfD to be considered a completely new debate? The new WP:AIRCRASH is completely different to the old one. Would it be better to procedurally close this one and immediately reopen a brand new debate? Mjroots (talk) 06:45, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Not exactly a "new" debate, but given the changes to WP:AIRCRASH, I thought it would be better to let the discussion remain open for seven more days to receive new, more accurate feedback. It might have made sense to close it as "no consensus" and immediately re-nominate it, but it should be easy enough for the closing admin to weigh/discount initial votes as appropriate. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:48, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, the way that is reading to me is that the inital AfD has been/will be voided. Am I correct? It should be made clear on the AfD as to whether comments made before WP:AIRCRASH was changed which refer to the old version will be counted or not, and comments which referred to what was then the draft version which were made before the new version was posted will be counted or not. It's all getting a bit messy IMHO. BTW, as you know, I've got an RfA running. It looks like I'm going to be granted Adminship. I'll not perform any admin-related action in respect of the AfD discussion as I'm an involved editor so you needn't worry that I'll steam in myself come Monday morning. Mjroots (talk) 17:46, 23 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, the comments made before WP:AIRCRASH was changed won't be necessarily voided; indeed, some of the comments still appear valid, which is why it's better to keep the discussion in the same place rather than start a new AfD. –Juliancolton | Talk 17:49, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Whose Responsible This

I would very much like you to look at this deletion again. I don't believe that:

"Arguments for keeping the article are almost all irrelevant or non-existent"

is accurate or true. There are more than several comments voting to keep the article that quote secondary sources including an article in The Guardian online written by a respected (read paid) journalist. The article in question makes a very valid point about humiliation and mass cyberbullying.

I would like to hear a coherent argument against these votes rather than having them dismissed out of hand. In my opinion there is a greater issue here.

Like it or not - and clearly you do not - Wikipedia has a role to play in recording modern culture for posterity. As there are no realistic limits to the amount of space that Wikipedia can occupy, the removal of articles that describe small scale and ephemeral events is both unnecessary and creates a dishonest picture of the time. To take a more serious example, what would French history be without evidence of the "j'accuse" controversy? Without the 'disposable' cartoons and satirical writing of the day would we understand events as we do?

Yes, the internet is awash with such pieces of pop culture, but the technology that has permitted this also allows a virtually limitless capacity to archive them. Yes, this is a reasonably pointless meme but who are we to decide on its cultural importance, at this early stage?

As an advertising copywriter in digital I have a great deal of experience of the 'churn' of the internet and can categorically state that the argument that 'nothing vanishes' from the web is nonsense. Content vanishes all the time and when it does, it disappears forever.

I have been asked not to 'attack' Wikipedia contributors, an accusation that I will accept and for which I apologise. The essential essence of my hyperbolic statement remains however. There appear to be forces at work, 'deletionist' forces, working unilaterally to make Wikipedia something that they believe is right and fitting. This deletion has not done much to disuade me of this view.

On a lighter note, may I congratulate you on your continued work for Wikipedia and your recent 'day'.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Matt Killeen

Hi, thanks for the note. I actually believe consensus was clear. As you know, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia; and while we do accept content that is more befitting of almanacs and specialized encyclopedias, an Internet meme created two weeks ago hardly meets our inclusion policies. That said, I examined some of the arguments for retaining this article, and I've determined that very few actually explain their reasoning satisfactorily. For example, with all due respect, your vote, "Stop trying to control Wikipedia you information Stasi" is irrelevant to the discussion, and thus I was forced to discount it. The same goes for "Avast there ya landlubbers,I votes we keep it", and many others. It is clear to me that this AfD was canvassed for participation off-wiki. As EVula (talk · contribs) noted, if this meme becomes established and truly notable after a year or so, then we can reconsider this decision. Hope this helps. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:54, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of ClearPoint Credit Counseling page

I'm looking for some clarification. A page I created for ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions was deleted for various reasons, one of which is that it was advertising. Let me say that I am in complete agreement with this standard, I only want to understand its application. There is a nearly identical page for Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Atlanta. The only difference I can see between that page and the one I created is that there are some additional links. That in itself doesn't seem like a sufficient distinction to merit deletion; it seems additional editing would suffice. Can you clarify?

Also, my user page was deleted, apparently because I had a draft of the ClearPoint page stored there. It was my impression that I was the only one seeing contents of my userpage; perhaps I misunderstood. I request restoration of my user page.

Thank you!

Richmondwriter (talk) 15:19, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. You might want to check out this discussion on the article to determine the reason why it's been deemed unsuitable for inclusion. If there are other similar pages, those may have to be dealt with as well. As for your userpage, it will be visible to anybody, which is why many content policies do apply to the userspace. You're free to create a userpage with information about yourself, however. Hope this helps, –Juliancolton | Talk 16:13, 24 September 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of Discworld Stamps article

I was about to add another reference to the original article but you made your decision to delete it. I believe that this was an unfair deletion. I am a member of the Discworld Stamps forum and have just joined as a Wikipedia User.

In my view the rebuttal by Bernard Pearson, who produces the stamps, was very strong. The stamps were an invention of Sir Terry Pratchett himself, author of the Discworld novels, he was the bestselling author of the 90s and has sold over 55 million books worldwide (see Wikipedia entry), and first introduced the stamps in the Discworld novel 'Going Postal'. At that time Waterstones booksellers gave away a free Discworld Stamps First Day Cover with each book. The stamps were even illustrated in the end papers of the book. Since that day Discworld Stamps have grown hugely and are regularly shown and sold at Discworld conventions in Britain, USA and Australia. The stamps have been featured in Stamp Magazine and Gibbons Stamp Monthly, Britains leading stamp magazines on several occasions including a mention in the current edition of Gibbons Stamp Monthly featuring an article on the Bath Postal Museum and the link with Terry Pratchett.

The stamps are traded on eBay almost constantly with rarer stamps fetching over £1000. They are an important part of Cinderella stamps. Over 2 million stamps have been produced in their 5 years of existence. The fact that they are now archived in the British Library Philatelic Collection testifies to their importance.

I would ask that you reconsider your decision to delete the article.

Thank you, DJ Easterbrook (talk) 01:39, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I would like to (belatedly, as I've been gathering them over the last couple of days after discussion with DJ Clayworth) cite some of the missing references from third party sites etc as to the notability of these stamps and their producer, |Bernard Pearson:

  • There was a feature article in the October 2005 edition of the magazine, but unfortunately it does not seem to have been reproduced on the web archive.
For the purposes of this discussion I have scanned and temporarily made available the article (here).
* This was also covered in an article in Stanley Gibbons - again temporarily hosted here.
  • Bernard is regularly one of the invited guests at the various Discworld Conventions around the world, for example DWCon 2010, NADWCON 2009, Irish DWCon 2009 plus many others. These invites are regularly repeated year on year, as a wider historic search on those sites shows.
  • http://www.bathpostalmuseum.co.uk/explore/history/history_1800s2.html Noted part-way down the page is reference to the special event held with the Bath Postal Museum to mark their re-opening (Sir Terry is their Patron). At this event a number of the first Discworld Stamps were perforated using their Victorian perforating machine, many by Sir Terry himself.

There have been further collaborations which should be verifiable as third-party proof of notability (Cinderella Stamp Society, The Kipling Society and the British Library to name but three), although unfortunately they do not have anything I can link to on the web as proof. I will continue to see if I can find things though. DarrenHill (talk) 08:01, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I also looked at these references, and to some reference additions that were made to the article between when I last looked at it and when it was deleted. I view of these I wouldn't be opposed to a reinstatement. If they had been there when I first looked at the article I probably wouldn't have nominated it. DJ Clayworth (talk) 13:24, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, since it was deleted via AfD, I can't really unilaterally restore it. If you believe you've found sufficient sources to overcome the concerns raised at the deletion discussion, the most appropriate course of action would be to file a request at WP:DRV. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:04, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Thank you gentlemen. I will scan and temporarily make available the Stanley Gibbons references tonight (for the purposes of this discussion only, given they do not seem to be available on their own website for some reason I don't plan to host it permanently). After that I will file the request as you suggest. In the meantime, might I propose and request a temporary undeletion of the article, as described here ? DarrenHill (talk) 14:09, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I have now done as you requested and filed the request. I have also temporarily added links to scans of two Stanley Gibbons articles to the links above. As these are not on their own website I will remove them again once this discussion is completed and hopefully the deletion is reversed.

One more I forgot, the joint commemoration between DW Stamps and designer Mark Valentine in support of the Rockall Ho! venture. The sale of the covers alone raised over £2000 for charity.

See here. Cheeers, Dabomb87 (talk) 01:49, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of CyanogenMod

I think a software package that's covered on both Gizmodo and Slashdot (and whose YouTube channel became the 33rd most subscribed even before its official launch) is certainly notable enough to merit inclusion on Wikipedia. I realize notability is subjective to some degree, and the perspective of an outsider (i.e. someone who's not in the Android-modding community) may be very different from that of someone who has an active interest in this particular software niche. But if the issue of notability arises for a page like compressor stall, then I would naturally expect the opinions of pilots and aerospace engineers to be given greater weight than others. I don't know what the page looked like when you chose to delete it, but I hope that you'll have the decency to leave the new page alone this time around--or simply use a refimprove template or something similar to give suggestions for improvement. That would at least be constructive, rather than destroying a useful page out of spite for its authors.--71.105.214.189 (talk) 18:24, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Who said it was "destroyed out of spite for its authors"? –Juliancolton | Talk 18:40, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I'd like to point out that after seeing the cease and desist served via Google, I immediately came to wikipedia first in order to look up what Cyanogen was. I won't be the only one doing this, there will be plenty of people looking to access this information now that this story has broke. Any chance we can have a re-vote to restore this article? --Pvvni (talk) 20:30, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

That event is little more than a news story, and is thus unsuitable for inclusion within Wikipedia. –Juliancolton | Talk 20:41, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
We've seen this issue with experts dictating what was notable enough for inclusion and what wasn't. It didn't end well. The notability guidelines are the notability guidelines, no matter how important something is to Android owners, or Rush fans, or people with dog allergies. --King Öomie 20:46, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

Please restore the article about the National Research Center for Women & Families

Dear Julian,

The National Research Center for Women & Families was described in a short wikipedia article, because it is frequently quoted in the media around the world (and in wikipedia). I'm not sure why you deleted it, but apparently you thought it was too much like advertising. However, the article seems no different than articles for many other think tanks and nonprofit organizations. If there is a problem, let's revise it rather than delete the entire article.

I hope that we can discuss this. The Center is a think tank that does not accept money from companies whose medical products it reviews or evaluates. It does not sell anything -- all the Center's work is provided for free. Center staff have testified before the Canadian Parliament, the U.S. Congress, and many scientific organizations and agencies. They are often quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and major media in many other countries as well. If you google it, you'll see what I mean.

Hanuman (2010 film)

I am seeing result of AFD as 'Keep'. But the tag of AFD is still there on article page.

Can I nominate this article for AFD again? Not only because it is future film, not only because even actor playing role of Hanuman is unknown, and not only because production is not started.

I want to nominate because basic source, official announcement by Disney, is absconding on net. I am not finding news in US or western media. Indian media is infamous for carrying hoax news. Few years back "alien" monkey in Delhi and around was reported by media 24/7.

I want basic reliable source, official announcement by Disney.

Can I nominate this article for AFD?

I removed the residual AfD tag, which was left in place accidentally after the closure of the discussion. Your RfA response

Fashionably, someone had responded to my oppose comment on another RfA page, with the same comment that appeared on my RfA. Well, it is a fairly rude and dismissive way to oppose. You should provide your rationale for opposing, and let the readers decide for themselves whether or not it's a super-absolutely strong argument. Frankly, receiving a "Super-Absolutely Strong Oppose" oppose would seem rather discouraging and redundant. That said, not everything has to be accepted by Jimbo. –Juliancolton | Talk 14:22, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia administrator

Hello Julian: As you know I'm writing a draft article about Wikipedia administrators. Would you be able to tell me if Larry Sanger was ever an administrator of Wikipedia? and is Jimmy Wales an administrator or does he have all the admin privileges by default since he's the founder? Were the co-founders both admins by default or has the definition of administrator evolved over time to make the question of Larry Sanger having been an administrator, moot? Varks Spira (talk) 15:02, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure how likely an article on Wikipedia administrators would be kept around, but as far as I know, neither Jimmy Wales nor Larry Sanger were elected to be administrators in the conventional sense. Basically, the two of them were administrators before there ever were administrators. But my word isn't good enough. If you're writing an article, you have to base it on reliable, published sources. @harej 15:08, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, that's interesting. Yes, of course, they wouldn't be administrators and therefore they haven't gone through the Request for Adminship process, but they have the tools to get caught in a Wheel War, right? Varks Spira (talk) 15:12, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
See Larry Sanger and Jimbo Wales. This indicates that Larry Sanger is not an administrator now, and that Jimbo Wales is. This log listing indicates that any changes to Larry Sanger's status occurred prior to the keeping of logs about such things, so difficult to ascertain what user rights he had at some point in the past (at least with my limited knowledge of the system). Editorial control changes

In Time magazine I read, "Under the new plan, people can freely alter Wikipedia articles on, say, their local officials or company head — but those changes will become live only once they've been vetted by a Wikipedia administrator."(http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1924492,00.html) This would greatly expand the powers of the Wikipedia administrator. Is this true?

No, because that statement is not true. As it currently stands anybody with the "reviewer" flag would be able to approve changes, not just administrators. Admins have very little "power" in reality. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:16, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Did I misread it or did Time magazine get it wrong? Varks Spira (talk) 15:18, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, many sources are misinterpreting the upcoming changes regarding flagged revisions. –Juliancolton | Talk 15:31, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
It looks like that article is confused between the Flagged Revisions and "WikiTrust" proposals; however neither of these involve Wikipedia administrators directly as Juliancolton has said. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 15:22, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Lists

Featured lists are a waste of time. Gathering references to substantiate inclusion of entries is inane, since includability is usually obvious and WP:VER clearly states that only entries that are challenged or likely to be challenged should be referenced. And since lists generally present links, the nature of the topics that are linked is explained in each those linked pages -- and those explanations are subject to referencing which provides referencing to the lists by "passing through" the links. Copying the references to the lists that already lead to them is pointless busywork.

I am strongly opposed to wasting man hours on such a task. The greatest improvement in useability and usefulness to the OOK can be achieved by tackling these priorities:

  1. Fixing errors, especially those in the government branches sections of the country outlines!
  2. Writing the outline article: User talk:The Transhumanist/Outline (this should alleviate confusion about what an outline is and what it is for)
  3. Recruiting editors to work on the outlines
  4. Renaming the outlines that are still named "List of" (there are hundreds and hundreds of these), starting with those listed at Lists of mathematics topics
  5. Reformatting the newly renamed outlines
  6. Further integration (links to outlines, notices about outlines, and links between outlines)

Confusion will subside over time. Improving outline instruction pages would also help.

Hello. I am asking your opinion on User talk:71.112.77.101 and Private prison. In summary, I noticed that the ip has removed three references from the above article. The ip cites WP:SYNTH as the reason, but I believe that does not apply if valid references are removed. I would like to ask a second opinion before I proceed with the comments. Respected, need your help. Article Rankers Point Coaching Institute Indore; I had nominated it for deletion. because this article is of one private coaching class in Indore ,apart from this it disobeys many policies of wikipedia, & also discussed the matter in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rankers Point Coaching Institute Indore .Now this User:Wikindia24x7 has undone my nomination for deletion telling that he has wikified the Article, but when i reviewed it, i cant find any good addition. so i reverted his edits & nominated the article again for deletion. Jeremy Dunning-Davies

Julian: you closed the AfD discussion Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Jeremy_Dunning-Davies as delete back in June, yet the article was not deleted. Please could you now delete the article? Failing to do so was not helpful. Thanks. Mathsci (talk) 10:01, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

See here. The article was deleted, but it was expanded and improved by Headbomb (talk · contribs) and recreated. PeterSymonds (talk) 10:04, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
You're right about the deletion - my apologies, Julian. There is no improvement in the article. The problems of notability mentioned in the AfD have not been addressed. This kind of editing - the recreation of recently deleted BLPs with minimal changes - is disruptive and time-wasting. Headbomb (talk · contribs) has essentially ignored the AfD discussion - he should have made his additions then. Being a spokesperson for CERN is no sign of notability, I'm afraid. Certainly the promotions committee in the University of Hull did not consider it grounds for promoting Dunning-Davies to either reader or professor. Headbomb did participate in the AfD: he claimed quite incorrectly that Dunning-Davies was a Fellow of the Royal Society. The grounds for deleting the article remain unchanged. Storing it privately when an AfD discussion has gone against you and then putting it back wth minor modifications would seem to be a blockable offense. Why is the history of the page still intact if it has been recreated from scratch? The reinstatement of the deleted article from the userspace of Headbomb seems to have been done by admin NuclearWarfare (talk · contribs). Adding one sentence to the lede after a prolonged AfD discussion and then restoring the article without discussion makes a mockery of the deletion process. The content of the article has hardly changed as this diff shows [19]. There are several new redlinks and a copy-vio image. Mathsci (talk) 10:38, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I don't understand this diff [20] at all. Apparently Headbomb recreated the article and NuclearWarfare moved it back into his userspace. I'll have to look more closely at what Headbomb did, since he went against an AfD decision and an administrator. Mathsci (talk) 11:00, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Julian, everyone, here's our earlier discussion [21]. I'll have to say I don't see much difference. Dougweller (talk) 12:02, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I discovered that the so-called "expansion"/"improvement" by Headbomb resulted from an extremely careless misidentification of John David Davies, a spokesperson for CERN (see [22] and [23]). It was not at all helpful to have added that to the lede. I've prodded the article once more as it is unchanged from the time of the AfD (apart from a few better sources that I've added). It has now been speedily deleted once the false "significant expansion" had been corrected. Mathsci (talk) 00:16, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Pohnpei Liberation Day Games Soccer 2009

Hi Julian,

I was very disappointed to see that the article on the Pohnpei Liberation Day Games Soccer tournament 2009 had been deleted. I was just wondering how it infringed on Wikipedia's policy. At the moment we are trying very hard to raise the profile of the game in Micronesia and documenting the first major club tournament on island for several years seemed like an important step forward, obviously then I was saddened to see the article had been removed. Do you think you could explain what exactly was wrong with it because I would love to make the necessary corrections myself?

Best wishes Paul Watson 206.49.89.133 (talk) 23:02, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi. It was deleted in accordance with the PROD policy, which allows for an article to be summarily removed if no-one contests its proposal for deletion goes uncontested for seven days. In this case, the editor who nominated it for deletion cited concerns related to the lack of notability. If you believe you can overcome these concerns by bringing the article in line with verification policies, I'd be happy to restore it. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 00:50, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Julian, Thanks for the reply. I will happily have a go at bringing the article up to standards. I have read the guidelines for notability and would try and add a few sources etc if the article were restored. Thanks Paul —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.49.89.133 (talk) 13:07, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Van Jones

I believe the controversy over Van Jones has died down now, and that protection thru 16 December is no longer necessary. -- 209.6.238.201 (talk) 06:02, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

Given the persistent vandalism following two previous protections, I think a lengthy duration is necessary. Still, you're welcome to start a discussion at WP:RFUP to see what other administrators think. –Juliancolton | Talk 13:04, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
That's what I usually do straight-away, but I thought I'd give you first crack at it, on a lark -- certain editors like to advise me that I should be asking the protecting admin first, prior to an un-RPP request, and so I thought I'd try doing it their way one time for argument's sake. I win, haha. I must presume, though, that you are a Euro and out of touch with the U.S. zeitgeist; this gentleman is no longer upon the MSM radar, was thrown under the bus, etc. Any few obsessive IP vandals, like moths still circling the light bulb, could be dealt with on an individual basis, imo. -- 209.6.238.201 (talk) 01:46, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm from the US and aware of the situation actually. Vandalism doesn't immediately cease as the real world controversy dies down, however. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:47, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. I got Joe Wilson (U.S. politician) unprotected the other day, and it's running at one vandal edit every 12 hours or so, which is perfectly manageable, and his heckling was much bigger news (and more recent) than Jones, to even where it was the subject of an SNL skit only 9 days ago. For the most part, vandals, since they know they'll be auto-reverted, want to be and end up where the red meat story of the day is; they are a hundred times more fickle than my cats. -- 209.6.238.201 (talk) 02:06, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Requests for mediation

A request for formal mediation of the dispute concerning Mediation case name has been filed with the Mediation Committee (MedCom). You have been named as a party in this request. Please review the request at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/User:Linas and then indicate in the "Party agreement" section whether you would agree to participate in the mediation or not.

Mediation is a process where a group of editors in disagreement over matters of article content are guided through discussing the issues of the dispute (and towards developing a resolution) by an uninvolved editor experienced with handling disputes (the mediator). The process is voluntary and is designed for parties who disagree in good faith and who share a common desire to resolve their differences. Further information on the MedCom is at Wikipedia:Mediation Committee; the policy the Committee will work by whilst handling your dispute is at Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Policy; further information on Wikipedia's policy on resolving disagreements is at Wikipedia:Resolving disputes.

If you would be willing to participate in the mediation of this dispute but wish for its scope to be adjusted then you may propose on the case talk page amendments or additions to the list of issues to be mediated. Any queries or concerns that you have may be directed to an active mediator of the Committee or by e-mailing the MedCom's private mailing list (click here for details).

Please indicate on the case page your agreement to participate in the mediation within seven days of the request's submission.

Thank you, linas (talk)

After your rejection for mediation, I have filed a formal complaint with the arbitration committee. I am now asking you to voluntarily relinquish your admin powers, and to voluntarily take an indefinite leave of absence from editing Wikipedia, in recognition for for your actions. I have filed a formal complaint here: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case#Attack by multiple admins upon User:Linas linas (talk) 02:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
You are welcome to initiate my recall procedure if you firmly believe I have abused my admin rights. –Juliancolton | Talk 02:46, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

I'll ask you now before bothering with DRV: could you relist this as needing more time to determine consensus? The article is currently crap and I doubt anyone is going to bother cleaning it up.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 01:18, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

I think consensus was pretty clear, actually, since no-one raised any arguments for deletion. Being "crap" isn't necessarily a valid reason to delete an article, and Wikipedia has no time limit, so it's inevitable that someone will clean it up eventually... –Juliancolton | Talk 01:20, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I thought it should be deleted and one of the two commenters said it's a "possible keep". There was barely a response to the discussion.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 01:21, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, that's a given, as you were the nominator. I'm not really sure what can be done; personally I see no real reason to re-open and relist it. As always, you're free to start a discussion at DRV, or better yet re-nominate it in a few months if it hasn't been improved. –Juliancolton | Talk 01:24, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I've removed 12kb of text from the article to fix it and have notified WP:INDIA.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 01:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
