- Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
- It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
- If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Sign your messages with four tildes (~~~~), be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
- When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
- If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
- Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.
Happy editing! Cheers, Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 02:03, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

Greenman (talk) 10:43, 24 May 2022 (UTC)ATU numbers into sandbox
editHi KHR FolkMyth. Thanks for adding the ATU numbers to the entries in my sandbox. I’ve been wondering what, if anything, to do about the individual numbers. They could go into a “list of...” article, and the database I’m gradually building up (helped by the numbers you’ve provided) would allow me to create that, but it would then be quite a bit of work to find references for the ones that Aarne et al don’t mention themselves, and it would need to somehow note any reclassification that has taken place in the past. Multiple numbers would be needed to deal with different sources using different numbers for that reason. For the groups, I’ve simply categorised articles into several groups if they have several ATU numbers for any reason (multiple themes, debatable classification, re-classification etc.) Maybe any use of specific numbers belongs in the articles themselves and not in categories or lists? --Northernhenge (talk) 21:45, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

Fixing the problems with Two Pieces of Nuts
editHello, GenQuest. I saw the warning atop the article page and was wondering: barring the "LEDE" section, what does it mean to be an "indiscrimate list"? The extensive "See also" section? The tales listed at "See also" are other tales from the same tale type, collected and published from all over the world and separated according to geography and common motifs - of course, based on the appropriate scholarship. That said, I have replaced the "See also" for a template that lists the tale type and other variants.KHR FolkMyth (talk) 04:32, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, KHR FolkMyth. Yes. The SA lists are waaaay too long. Please review LINKFARM. They seem to be present throughout the folklore articles you've authored, so I only marked two. Same with the LEDEs. 05:22, 14 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hello again, GenQuest. Following your advice, I've edited the articles to remove the extensive "See also" for a template. As for the LEDE, any tip on how to improve them?KHR FolkMyth (talk) 00:07, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, KHR FolkMyth. That's a start. However, you needn't remove the See also sections entirely. Focused lists of 1–5 entries are optimal, as long as they can add to the understanding of the article. I went ahead and did the LEDE re-write for you, and some other minor edits for clarity, on the article. All in all, good job. GenQuest "scribble" 14:34, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" are against Wikipedia policy and not permitted; Wikipedia articles should be written objectively, using independent sources, and from a neutral perspective. Fr. Richter
editRichter, Fr. "Lithauische Märchen" -- I failed to find any scholarly reference which discuss this person and this collection. Therefore I am afraid this is not a reliable source for folklore. The texts of these fairy tales are not accompanies with information about their sources, i.e., they are of unknown provenance. This is not how ethngraphers publish their work ven in 19th century. I strongly suspect it is a literary hoax. Unless you convince me otherwise with good sources, I am going to remove refs to him from wikipedia. - Altenmann >talk 19:12, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Altenmann: well, some of this "Richter"'s fairy tale collection have been discussed in academy:
- Bolte/Polívka's 3-tome Anmerkungen of the Grimm's tales list "Das Mädchen und die Schlange" under the discussion of "The Frog Prince" (Vol. 1, p. 7).
- The tale "Der einäugige Riese", also by this Richter, was at least referenced in Frazer's scholium of Apollodorus's Libraries as a modern version of the Polyphemus's tale.
- The tale "Der starke Hans und der starke Peter" was also listed under Bolte/Polívka's discussion of Grimm's tale nr. 60, The Two Brothers.
- Richter's tale "Der Rabe" was also listed by Bolte/Polívka.
- Tale "Der Bote aus dem Himmel" was listed in Bolte/Polívka's Vol. 2, in the notes to tale nr. 104, "Die klugen Leute".
- This "Zeitschrift für Volkskunde " is also a source on folklore, according to its article.
- KHR FolkMyth (talk) 23:47, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- I did see them. I searched google myself. But none of them discussed Rischter and his credentials, with one notable exception: Apolidorus wrote (being a polite person, I guess :-) "From Lithuania is reported a tale, which bears a close, if not a suspicious, resemblance to a Homer's story." He also footnotes it: "The author says nothing as to the source of the tale". Ethnographers know only too well about contamination by literary influences of narrators. This was even a subject of a funny scene in one old Russian film when villagers's choir sung an excerpt from Tale of Tsar Saltan pretending it is a genuine local folk song. We know nothing about a "Fr. Richter", and per sikipedia WP:RS rules he cannot be a reliable source to be cited. Initially I mistakenly thought he was Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, a.k.a. Jean Paul (Fr. Richter), but he died long before this publication and anyway none of bibliographies of this famous poet contain "Lithauische Märchen". - Altenmann >talk 01:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Parameter for pages
editHello KHR FolkMyth; I hope you are doing well. Regarding your partial revert (diff) in Aeolic Greek, it is my understanding that commas are only used for non-sequential pages. For example, per Template:Citation Style documentation § pages, which I linked in my edit summary (diff) as well:
pages: A range of pages in the source that supports the content. Use either
|page=
or|pages=
, but not both. Separate using an en dash (–); separate non-sequential pages with a comma (,); do not use to indicate the total number of pages in the source. Displays preceded by|pp.
unless|no-pp=yes
.
Likewise, per Help:Citation Style 1 § Pages:
pages: pages in the cited source containing the information that supports the article text. Separate page ranges with an en dash: – , for example
|pages=236–239
. Separate non-sequential pages either with commas or semicolons, for example|pages=157, 159
. The form|pages=461, 466–467
is used when you are citing both non-contiguous and sequential pages. For page numbers higher than 999, either do not use thousands separators or enclose the page number in accept-this-as-written markup to avoid commas being erroneously interpreted as list separators, e.g.|pages=((1,234{{endash}}1,235))
. For multiple hyphenated pages, use the accept-this-as-written markup to avoid the hyphens being converted to dashes, e.g.|pages=((1{{hyphen}}2)), ((3{{hyphen}}4))
.
Lastly, see the relevant Template:Harvard citation no brackets § Location in the source text, which also includes an example with sequential pages; similar to the aforementioned in Aeolic Greek.

I don't think the etymology by Beekes (2010) [2009], being separated into two entries, affects this. Anyway, thanks for your time. Demetrios1993 (talk) 20:26, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, no problem at all. Thank you for the notice. If you wish to revert, I'm not opposed to it, if it is part of Wikipedia's standards. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 22:28, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

editHi KHR FolkMyth. Thank you for your work on The Belbati Princess. Another editor, TechnoSquirrel69, has reviewed it as part of new pages patrol and left the following comment:
Thanks for creating this article! I've added a few cleanup tags to highlight some issues with the prose; primarily, the retellings of the tale are excessively detailed and need to be significantly pruned to be encyclopedic. Let me know if you have any questions!

- I pruned the main plot summary some, but obviously a lot needs to be done. KHR, I don't know if you care, but each one of these articles on tales you churn out could have been on the front page in the DYK section. Drmies (talk) 21:56, 25 May 2024 (UTC)

editHi, I see you've contributed a lot to The Child with a Moon on his Chest (Sotho), would you be interested in joining a wikiproject on oral tradition? Kowal2701 (talk) 15:36, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Kowal2701:, sorry for the late reply. I'm honored for the invitation, but I think I might pass. Wish you good luck on this endeavour! I'm still editing articles about myths, literature, and folktales/fairy tales, though. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 16:58, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- I'm genuinely really impressed with the work you're doing, relentlessly high quality. I understand a lot of editors prefer to work independently, if there's any way we can assist you, please feel free to let us know. You might find the assessment categories useful once they're done? Kowal2701 (talk) 17:10, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Btw the page is at WP:WikiProject Anthropology/Oral tradition taskforce, it's still very new so won't be of much use atm. We hope to make resources like style guides, like WP:WikiProject Climate change/Style guide, and your input would be greatly appreciated, but absolutely no worries if not, sorry for badgering Kowal2701 (talk) 18:08, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- No problem at all. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 18:09, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Kowal2701:, I think the people at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mythology (Wikipedia Project Mythology) can be of help, since there is a great overlap between oral tradition, written literature and mythology, any help from any of the other camps is very useful. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 18:14, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, but I 've already messaged all of them lol. I'm going through various categories and messaging editors who contributed lots to a related article. I've done Category:Oral tradition, Category:Oral literature, doing Category:Folklore now, have Category:Legends and Category:Ethnic groups in Africa by country lined up, are there any others you know of that might be good? Kowal2701 (talk) 18:21, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Category:Mythology would be good like you said Kowal2701 (talk) 18:22, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- No one at the moment besides those you mentioned. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 18:22, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Kowal2701:: A good starting point could be the Enzyklopädie des Märchens. Many reputed authors wrote articles dealing with the local and national traditions of many countries. If you have access to De Gruyter, it is available there, in German. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 01:44, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, I’ll add that to the bibliography on the page Kowal2701 (talk) 08:57, 10 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Kowal2701:: for Madagascar and Indic Ocean traditions, specially from African populations, search for the works of Lee Haring. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 12:11, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Kowal2701:: The page Cuento, in his further reading, has many sources I added. Perhaps there are valuable references that may add to the study of Spanish/Latin America traditions. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 23:47, 14 August 2024 (UTC)
- I added something I found elsewhere but it might be worth adding one of the general catalogues. Do they discuss oral tradition specifically? Kowal2701 (talk) 07:23, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Kowal2701: The catalogues may discuss oral tradition in their introductions or in a conclusion-like chapter. In the articles I edit, I use their indexing/classification, which is their "meat", so to speak.
- You are free to add anything you may find useful to that page. I do not own the article. I am simply someone deeply fascinated with folklore and comparative mythology. KHR FolkMyth (talk) 11:56, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll have a look. Yeah I can see that lol, it's a great way to get to know other cultures. Feel free to add any drafts you're working on that you would be comfortable with other people contributing to to the taskforce page, honestly some drafts I do I have a vision for what I want it to be so don't like people contributing it or having to articulate the vision, so no worries if not Kowal2701 (talk) 12:19, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Your contributed article, The Horse of the Cloud and the Wind
editIf this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, The Horse of the Cloud and the Wind. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – The Wonderful Sea-Horse. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at The Wonderful Sea-Horse. If you have new information to add, you might want to discuss it at the article's talk page.
If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:40, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hey KHR FolkMyth, to say I was surprised when I was reviewing this article would be an understatement. Could you explain why you forked almost all of the content from one article into another? —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 03:45, 23 September 2024 (UTC)
- @TechnoSquirrel69:: to be frank, I can re-add the tales back into "The Wonderful Sea-Horse", since they refer to a cycle of tales that exist in Iran and adjacent areas (but mostly Iran) wherein the hero finds his equine companion, the magic sea-horse, either in the sea (which is occurs in most of the tales) or rescues the foal from the rim of the well.
- However, I separated the tales since, to add "The Horse of the Cloud and the Wind", which is a variant of the cycle, to my mind, would have made the page even larger.
- Since I edit mostly about fairy tales, you can see for my history of contributions that larger pages about tales, like The Dancing Water, the Singing Apple, and the Speaking Bird, The Love for Three Oranges (fairy tale), Egle the Queen of Serpents/The Lake Beetle as Groom and Swan Maiden, I've been trying to break off their contents to shorter and more manageable pages with scholarly sources focused on them.
