Problems

• Sites with a wikimedia.org address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [1]
• Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [2][3]
• Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [4]

Changes this week

• The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [5]
• Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [6][7]
• The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [8]
• The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [9][10][11]
• The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [12][13]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

The code is at https://github.com/kaldari/hotarticles. I wrote it a long time ago as a small weekend project, so it doesn't have any support for string localization, error handling, configuration, etc. but you are welcome to create a French fork of it and run it as a separate Tool Labs project. Hello, I have already found the code. As you are the creator of this code, can you change (or indicate me what I must change in) the code in order to allow this script to run on french wikipedia. @Gratus: You won't be able to run the bot on your own computer because it requires having access to a mirror of the Wikipedia databases. There is a mirror on Tool Labs, so if your ran a fork on Tool Labs, it could work. A fork is a copy of the code that has been modified to suite a different purpose. The only code you would need to change would be changing the English strings to French strings. For example, $output .= "These are the articles that have been edited the most within the last...". All of the logic code will work fine for any Wikipedia. The first step would be to create a Tool Labs account and set up a new Tool Labs project for the fork. Recent changes

• Syntax highlighting support is now available for 53 more computer languages. [15]
• When you get a notification that an edit has been reverted, the notification now quotes part of the edit summary. [16]
• RESTBase is now using scrub_wikitext instead of scrubWikitext. [17]

Changes this week

• Wikidata will have a new data type called "math". It will be used for formulas. [18][19]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 February. It will be on all wikis from 11 February (calendar).

Future changes

• Other sites will be able to tell when visitors come from links on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites. They used to be able to do this until we started using forced HTTPS in June 2015. This is planned to happen on 15 February. [20][21]
• Wikidata will have a new data type called "external-id". It will be used for references to external resources. It will be enabled on February 16. Some properties will be changed to the new data type. [22][23][24]

Recent changes

• You can now edit pages on the mobile site version without JavaScript. [25]
• You can now use the Math extension to write chemistry formulas. [26]

Problems

• A few editors might have been logged in as someone else because of a bug. For security reasons everyone was logged out on 9 February. If you have seen this bug, you can report it. [27][28]

Changes this week

• There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. The plan was to have it leave beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. It will happen on 16 February instead. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [29][30]
• Cross-wiki notifications will be available as a beta feature on Wikidata, MediaWiki, Commons, and all Hebrew and French wikis on 19 February. [31]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 February. It will be on all wikis from 18 February (calendar).

• There was no new MediaWiki version last week. Changes that were planned to happen last week will happen this week instead. This is because of a bug that made saving pages take longer time. [35][36]

Link HotArticlesBot

Finding the bot's user page is hard for non-tech-savvy users. Well, it's easy if you know how to (edit page, find the transcluded subpage, check history --> HotArticlesBot), but I can imagine that many users don't know how to do that. Maybe sneak in "Last updated by HotArticlesBot 31 March 2016." in the footer? jonkerz ♠talk 22:34, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Czech Republic edit

Could you post on the talkpage about your edit to that article? Prononciation appears to be the subject of several active discussions there and the article is full-protected to prevent several patterns of edits that do not have consensus. If you're making an edit due to your evaluation of a consensus there, an edit-summary noting that would have been useful, and a note in the relevant discussions too. Or if you didn't notice the discussion, please undo your edit and join one of the discussions. Otherwise, it might look like you were using your higher edit privleges to make an end-run around several site policies. DMacks (talk) 21:37, 15 April 2016 (UTC)

HotArticlesBot accuracy

For WP:SPIDERS, the bot as of now shows Hexurella with 19 edits. However, it's a new article and the history shows it has had 4 edits in total, including its creation. The same happens with other new articles (another example is Pseudonemesia: claimed 11, actually 2). Why the discrepancies? Peter coxhead (talk) 10:31, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

@Peter coxhead: Finally got this fixed. It turns out that the recentchanges table includes all sorts of changes besides edits. For example, it was also counting interlanguage links being added via Wikidata. It should be accurate now. Kaldari (talk) 01:50, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

Statistics for page counts and breakdown of the source of the page counts

You appear to know alot about page counts at Wikipedia. Page count statistics are stored and available for all Wikipedia articles for the cumulative number of page hits per day on one of the tabs readily accessible on the edit history pages of all articles. Do you know if these page count statistics are broken down anywhere as to the source of where the page request is coming from? What part of the the cumulative page count at Wikipedia comes from searching and linking from the Yahoo engine, as opposed to the Google engine, as opposed to the Wikipedia search box engine, how many are from desktop, how many are from mobile, etc? Which percentage of page counts for individual Wikipedia articles come from which sources whether from inside Wikipedia or from outside Wikipedia? Hi Kaldari,

Did you see the announcement that http:// access to the API is going away in a few weeks? It looks like HotArticlesBot is going to break as a result of this change. BTW, I'm encouraging people who need help updating their code to ask at w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard or on the mailing list, so if you can keep an eye out for requests, it'd probably make someone's day much better. • @Crow: Unfortunately, only I have access to that that data currently (since it's in the Google dashboard). Today we've done 7535 queries, yesterday, 1707, the day before, 116. State

Belize is both a country and a sovereign state. "Country" is the more commonly used term on Wikipedia and more easily understood. I don't see any advantage to using "sovereign state" in this case. Kaldari (talk) 22:39, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

It definitely is both. It is also a nation, so that can be disputed as well. Again, it needs to be referred to that a country like England cannot compare to a state like Belize, as England is solely a country and nothing more as opposed to a state like Belize. England has no sovereignty, while Belize can. Therefore, therein lies the difference. Wikipedia doesn't also really support the term country, e.g. List of countries, redirects to list of sovereign states.66.46.53.106 (talk) 00:59, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

All the articles on Central American countries refer to them as "countries", not "sovereign states" (with the exception of Honduras, which is referred to as a "republic". Personally, I think "sovereign state" is far to jargony for lead sentences. "Country" works fine. The exact nature of the country's political status can be discussed in the article body. I apologize but to refer to states as countries are terrible for all those articles, especially with Hounduras having such a terrible decline in its term. While state is an extremely technical term, it is absolutely necessary as the state is absolutely defined and where country should be placed in articles very well needed. Although I've already taken your recommendations to talk in the Belize's article, it doesn't resolve the change inmediately, nor does it justify country to still have its term in the article, leading to the final question as to why it's fair to still have the term country? 66.46.53.106 (talk) 02:29, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

Outdated material

Hi. Re your message on my talk, too often articles about recent events are written as if they were breaking news stories. But as is often said, Wiki is not a news ticker. It's an encyclopedia, and most articles will long outlive the immediacy of breaking news. Consequently, information included should not be transitory, ephemeral, etc. The freeway shutdown in Oakland – 1,500 miles from the Castile shooting – on July 8 lasted only a few hours, and was of little note outside the Bay Area. @Sca: The Oakland protests were covered outside of the Bay Area,[38][39][40] and seemed to be significantly larger and more disruptive than the protests elsewhere, but I agree it's a fine line to decide what protests are notable enough to mention. Kaldari (talk) 19:40, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

@Anthere: I'm not sure where exactly to generate the HotArticles report for the Wikipedia Primary School project. The main portal seems to be on meta, but this subscription would be for the English Wikipedia articles specifically. There is also Wikipedia:WikiProject South Africa/Wikipedia Primary School, but I'm not sure if that is the appropriate location either. It seems strange to me that it's set up as a subproject of WikiProject South Africa. Shouldn't it have it's own WikiProject portal on English Wikipedia? Kaldari (talk) 19:02, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

I agree... it would have been WAY logical to have it be a WikiProject on its own. I inherited that project one year after its beginning and it had been set up this way. I am not too familiar of how the WikiProject are working, so I assumed the person who made that choice did it on purpose, knowing rules I was not aware of. HotArticlesBot issue

Hi. While enjoying this great new widget, it just occurred to me today to check into the edits of some in the list. I checked several entries in today's list for WP Louisville and the numbers are off. For instance, the last entry says "16 edits" but should only be "4 edits". Odd orange link

I've been using your extremely useful "turn-dab-pages-orange" gadget; it helps a lot when trying to find piped links, especially. Today I noticed an orange link in a template at the top of a new article (permalink), which is definitely not a link to a dab page. It may be caused by the disambig templates in this table. (They are listed using the {{tlrow}} template.) I wonder if you'd have time to look at it and fix whatever your gadget is picking up on. Thanks. — Gorthian (talk) 22:34, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

@Gorthian: You are correct. It is considering Wikipedia:Template_messages/Cleanup a disambiguation page because it includes the {{disambiguation cleanup}} template. I'm not really sure how to fix this though. Kaldari (talk) 21:13, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

I noticed it does this wherever the "tl" prefix is put in the template name. I know zip about the coding here, but couldn't it make an exception somehow if it detects those letters immediately inside the brackets? — Gorthian (talk) 21:21, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

@Gorthian: The problem is that {{tlrow}} actually transcludes the template (unlike {{tl}}). So there's no way for the parser to know the difference. You could subst the {{disambiguation cleanup}} template into that table and remove the DISAMBIG magic word, but it would be a bit messy, and if the template were changed, it wouldn't be updated in the table. The real solution would be to add a secret parameter to the {{disambiguation cleanup}} template that suppresses the DISAMBIG magic word and use that parameter in the template call in the table. HotArticlesBot not counting right

Kaldari, I see that Wikipedia:WikiProject Women scientists/Hot articles is now running. Thank you! However, the numbers are wrong. In the Sept 23 update, it says that Temple Grandin had 77 edits in the last seven days, but the actual number is two. The other numbers are also greatly inflated. Yes, I previously reported this behaviour for WP:Spiders articles too, albeit not so inflated. Thus in the 23 September data, Parawixia shows 13 edits, whereas the page history shows the creation + 5 subsequent edits. Peter coxhead (talk) 21:57, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi Kaldari! I noticed that you added PageAssessments support to {{WikiProject Military history}}, and wanted to let you about a quirk in this particular template: the value of the class= parameter won't necessarily match the assessment class displayed (and used for categories, etc.) by the template, since there is some internal logic that adjusts the parameter value based on a combination of other parameters. I'm not sure whether this is important for the extension, but if you're trying to capture the actual assessment rating used by the project, you'll want to use the following in place of {{{class|}}}:

The basic idea is as follows:

1. Most non-article classes (e.g. Template-Class, Category-Class, etc.) are set according to the namespace from which the template is invoked; the value of the class parameter is entirely ignored in those cases. For example, if the template is used on a category talk page, but includes |class=Stub, the template will behave as though class=Template were used instead.
2. For articles, one of two discrete sets of ratings is used depending on whether the article is a list or not; this is triggered based on the value of the list parameter, which overrides the class parameter. For example, including |class=Start |list=yes will cause the template to behave as though |class=List were used instead.
3. For articles rated at the Start-Class, C-Class, or B-Class level, the template uses the values of the five B-Class-X parameters to calculate the rating; the value of the class parameter causes this logic to be invoked, but is otherwise ignored. For example, using |class=B |B-Class-1=no |B-Class-2=no |B-Class-3=no |B-Class-4=no |B-Class-5=no will cause the template to behave as though |class=Start were used instead.
