License tagging for Image:Mine shaft plan.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Mine shaft plan.png. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 22:11, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Ground fault

The page does seem a little odd where it is, but you should handle it as a merge or a move. If all the content is already in another page, call it a merge, and just leave the redirect, if its appropriate. With only one editor you could just ask him instead of following the formal procedure. But I'm not supposed to do a delete as a speedy for something like this.DGG 16:41, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

hey thanks

Thank you for fixing Lake Transit for me, for some reason the stub, notes, cat, and template simply werent showing up. Major cool points. Hey could you take a look at Richmond, California for me? Theres an ongoing debate about whether between Hercules and The Bay Bridge along interstate 80 means that includes richmond or not as being the most congested commute, my logic makes me think that is just like saying states west of the mississippi. that doesnt say california in name but it does mean california, similarly i reckon that between hercules and the bay bridge does mean richmond.Cholga is a SUPERSTAR¡Talk2Cholga!Sexy Contribs 02:12, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

no problem, there was an issue with the cite web template that needed to be cleaned up, don't know enough about the area to pass judgement on Richmond, California though.--Kelapstick 02:24, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Jae (disambiguation)

Hi Kelapstick,

I am confused by your "cleanup" of the Jae disambiguation page. By WP:MOSDAB, disambiguation pages have separate sections according to topic, but human name entries are either all in one section or divided into two sections, one by given name and one by surname. Breaking the performance artists off into their own section seems to be in contradiction with these guidelines. Adding "the name of" to the opening sentence seems redundant as well, as the sentence has the same meaning with or without it. Also, I do not understand your deletion of the "See also" section. If your concern was with the fact that it was filled with red links, I am about to create all those redirects and disambiguation pages. I would like to switch the page back to its original format. If you have reason to believe it should stay the way it is, please let me know.

Naming conventions for territories

Hey there, I noticed you created Category:Mining communities in the Northwest Territories, and then replaced it with Category:Mining communities in Northwest Territories. The former is actually correct according to the convention we've adopted for Canadian territories on Wikipedia. Specifically, we refer to the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Nunavut. A more elaborate explanation can be found at Naming conventions (settlements); these generic rules can be applied to categories too. (I can't find the specific mention for using the Northwest Territoties, but it does exist; for example, take a look at the entries in Category:Communities in Canada). Hope this helps. Mindmatrix 20:40, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I thoguht the Northwest Territories was correct, but then when I was adding Yellowknife I saw that it was in Category:Cities in Northwest Territories, so I assumed that was the correct naming convention, and switched it. Anyway I will flip them back to the new one (there were only two articles linked anyway), and change YK, it is the only one in that category I think anyway. Thanks--Kelapstick 20:46, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Oil shale

Hi, Kelapstick. I wonder if you may be interested to help developing Oil shale and its spin-off articles. I listed Oil shale for the new peer review and related spin-off articles (Oil shale extraction, Oil shale geology, Oil shale industry, History of the oil shale industry, Oil shale reserves, Oil shale economics, and Environmental effects of oil shale industry) for the peer review. Your comments and edits will be most welcome. The intention is to have these articles ready for the GA and FA nominations.Beagel 18:00, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

Climate graph

You added a climate graph to the Flin Flon article in July; I created that climate graph template in April and recently altered it so that all information appears on one line (this way, you can completely remove the sunshine hours, instead of leaving it blank). If you have added any of these graphs elsewhere, please let me know so I can update those ones, too. Thanks.

See: User:Vidioman/Weather/Climategraphs for more. Thanks.

Mining

Hello; I noticed this morning that an edit was made to the introduction of the mining article, and that you reverted the edit because the lead section does not "need to summarize entire article." while I agree that the version of the lead section you reverted would need to be re-written, I was planning on expanding the lead myself today, so that it conforms with Wikipedia:Lead section which states "The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview of the article. It should establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points—including any notable controversies that may exist. The emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic according to reliable, published sources." I believe this means the lead section should, in fact, cover the basics of the points covered in the article, maybe not with as much detail as the edit by user 67.36.19.250 but as it stands now, the points the article covers are not mentioned at all in the lead. Wanted to leave you a message here rather than simply put in detail you just removed.Theseeker4 (talk) 12:36, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for the mining barnstar by the way, just saw that you had given one to me as I hadn't checked my talk page in a little while :-)Theseeker4 (talk) 12:45, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I may have been a little overzealous with my revert, but the intro was a bit much and I found it slightly dramatic...I have no objection to an expansion summarizing key points in the article, but I wouldn't want to see it get too large either.--Kelapstick (talk) 15:13, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Agreed that the edit you reverted needed work. I will start with that and try to pare it down a bit, making it summarize the article without getting too large. I just wanted to discuss it with you first since you reverted something I was planning on working on myself. Also, anything else you think the mining article needs that I may have overlooked, let me know. We (meaning those in Wikiproject mining) should definately make the core article of our project reach featured article status as quickly as possible, which is why I have been rewriting what I thought needed work. My only problem is a lack of sources to add meaningful information, but I will do what I can to make it flow better. Thanks.Theseeker4 (talk) 15:21, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Sounds good to me, I have been working this morning on making the list of minerals mined shorter (i.e. summerizing lead, zinc, copper etc. to base metals). I have a couple of good references here, a Hard Rock Miner's Handbook (available online at http://www.mcintoshengineering.com) and a couple others, plus I get CIM Magazine every couple of months.--Kelapstick (talk) 15:33, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
I added the paragraph you removed from the intro, removing most of the dramatic language and reducing the quantity of information. I think it is much better as a quick summary, but if you have any other changes that should be made to it feel free to do so or let me know.Theseeker4 (talk) 15:59, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
Much more gooder--Kelapstick (talk) 16:09, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

Shopping

Thanks. Yeah, it's certainly valid to discuss a broad overview of the retail sector in a city's economy (frex, the section in Greater Sudbury that discusses the ongoing broad phenomenon of retail businesses running away from downtown), but we don't need to simply list individual stores — it comes off far too much like a tourist guide. I took a crack at the shopping section in the Thompson article, just so you know — I'm not fully satisfied with the results, but I pretty much had to work with what was there. Even though you are the primary contributor, there is no thing as page ownership on Wikipedia. I came across Bill Scott (author) at an AfD and discovered he was an Order of Australia honoree. As I've come to be familiar with this type of award, I knew he was notable. :) I just thought it was a funny coincidence. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:58, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Kela. Using sandbox pages or setting up a tool's page is a good idea. On the other hand I'm a clutterer, so I'd probably add so many tools to it and make it such a mess that I may better off just using the actual help pages themselves, and the ad hoc methods I've adopted so far! :)

Thanks for your interest the article and for cleaning up the refs. As you probably noticed I tried to switch over to a different format so the citation numbers wouldn't look so crazy. I have some more sources I want to add, and then if you want to help me with a DYK hook that would be great. I was thinking something along the lines of "Did you know that Bill Scott was awarded the Order of Australia for his anthologies of Australian bush songs and his long history as an Australian folklorist." Needs to be tweaked, but something along those lines. I think he's a pretty interesting guy. I was trying to find a youtube version of his Hey Rain song so I could hear it (it's been performed by many artists), but no luck so far. I did find the lyrics though, so I'm going to add some of them.

Working on the article got a little stressful last night because it was late, and there was some kind of war of the roses between the nom and one of the voters. Then the nom was editing on top of me, even after I told them to let me know when they were finished and they said they were finished. So that was kind of aggravating when they were still causing edit conflicts. But I think they were stressed out. But it's no excuse and their efforts seemed to be somewhat related to being proven right rather than collaboration and it bugs me when noms are actively trying to kill articles. I'm always happy to be proved wrong and when someone is willing to work on actually fixing an article I'm with them 100% even when there are still issues.

Anyway, thanks again. Now you've helped me vent too! I'll let you know when I'm done adding so you can have a look. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:24, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

In fact I was worried about dropping you a note in case I was going to be accused of canvassing or something. But I try to be transparent and thought it was okay to just drop you a friendly note. I try not to let paranoia run my life, and frankly I wasn't worried about the article beindg deleted at all. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:28, 19 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm not kidding about my keys. Ever since I made jokes at the AfD about the Garden Gnome Liberationists article, I can't find them. That's an excellent hook. You're going to be my go to guy for DYK hooks! ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:34, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

What is Kelapstick? I thought it was some kind of play on words... I did think to check, but after I posted the gal comment. Gulp. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:39, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Re: Wanakee

Hey, give me a chance. She is well-known to African Americans for creating a hair oil and eventually a cosmetics company that catered to the needs of afro-textured hair. She may not be known to all, but the number of magazine cover she had and her song and her acting should definitely pass notability guidelines. At one point she was purported to be the next Beverly Johnson, but......she followed God :-) (but I digress. I have references for everything I put and while it may need cleanup, it certainly isn't unnotable or going to hurt Wikipedia) Tippytim304 (talk) 05:49, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

There is a good chance that the article will be deleted The article has been deleted (not by me personally, by an administrator) before you got a chance to source all of your information, if you do have reliable sources to cite, that is great, and I wish you well with your work on the article. In the mean time I suggest you create a sub-page of your user page (an example might be User:Tippytim304/sandbox) where you can start your article, get it all ready for the main space and move it over when it is ready, no one will delete anything on a user sub-page of yours, and you can ask for someone to review it (I would be happy to if you would like) before you move it over. Personally I have two sandboxes for just this purpose. If you have any questions (this or anything else) please do not hesitate to ask, I will help in any way I can.--kelapstick (talk) 05:58, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
Maybe I'm not saying all of the right things, but with five references, including archive.org's to her website, imdb and hollywood.com, I think anyone can agree I am not talking about some arbitrary lady with some hair. This is a woman that has done things, and is encyclopedic. I actually started this article because I wanted to learn more about her. :-) Tippytim304 (talk) 06:05, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
The five references that you have posted are not what we refer to as reliable independant sources. You have to be able to establish notability and a personal website of hers, IMDB, linkdin and the others that you put do not fall into the category of reliable sources required for Wikipedia. The article will be deleted again shortly, and I suggest that you do not recreate it again until you can establish notability. I have created the sub user page for you so you will not lose all of the work that you did, and you can edit the article there until you are ready to bring it to the main space (as I mentioned before). Please contact me to review it if you wish (mainly your sources but also the format etc.), and I will do my best to help you. But do not recreate the article in the main space until it is ready (which it is not right now). I will be renominating it for speedy deletion (if it hasn't been already). Again an exact copy of it is in your user subpage I created User:Tippytim304/sandbox which will not be deleted unless you ask for it to be deleted. Work on it there for now.--kelapstick (talk) 06:15, 18 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi Kelapstick, If you get a chance, submit your passed DYK to Portal:Canada/Selected Did you know as well so it can be displayed on the Canada portal rotation.

By the way, I looked at your user page and really enjoyed seeing the citations for you putting your nose into others business and being unattractive! :-D

Cheers! DoubleBlue (talk) 02:48, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

I can't take full credit for the citing the talk page, I took the idea from Mindmatrix, that and writing the user page as if it were an article. Besides I can't make libelous statements like being prone to sticking my nose into other peoples business without citing something, and I would hate to have a "citation needed" tag on my page :D.
I just added it to the Canadian portal, that process needs to be clarified. I didn't know what diff meant, originally I thought that you had to post a different fact or wording, before I figured it out. Maybe should translated for those who are not completely fluent in WikiSpeak. Anyway hope I got it up properly. Thanks for the recommendation!--kelapstick (talk) 18:14, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that, The Canadian Business Journal (the article he created) was speedily deleted as copy write violation the other day (I tagged it as questionable notability, but possible), and his edits are pretty spammy, he has been adding external links to articles in the journal, I have given him a gentle note to use the article as a reference not just to dump a link at the bottom. He is defiantly a single purpose account in order to promote the journal, which may or may not be WikiWorthy of an article. I will bring this up on his talk page. Thanks!--kelapstick (talk) 19:04, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

It does a body good

I think my dubious tag indicates my perception that there is a promotional quality to the article as currently written. I think it would be best to stick to the facts. It wasn't clear to me why the milk would be fresher in a square jub than the usual shape, so I'll have to read the article (and carefully). I presume the big issue is that square jubs can be packed and stacked more tightly? Are there any advantages to the present shape? Perhaps less plastic material for the container (if my memory of surface area calculations holds)???Which shape do the cows prefer? ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:14, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

What did one cow say to the other? You're outstanding in your field. Before this gets udderly ridiculous, I just want to point out that I am inherently a skeptic. So I can't help but wonder, if square jugs are such a good thing why didn't anyone make them in that shape before? ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:30, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
"Apparently, while the new jugs are helping cut costs, they kind of suck at pouring milk. “I hate it,” said Lisa DeHoff, a cafe owner shopping in a Sam’s Club here. “It spills everywhere,” said Amy Wise, a homemaker. “It’s very hard for kids to pour,” said Lee Morris, who was shopping for her grandchildren. Sam's Club is offering milk pouring lessons complete with free cookies, in an effort to help acclimate consumers to the milk jug of the future:“ :) I will refrain from making any further comment at this time.
Relearning to pour? This sounds like something out of Stalinist Russia. In the Soviet Union they must have had re-education camps for the rebellious and reactionary traditionalists who insisted on milk jugs that could be poured without spilling. :) Can you tell I've been in discussion on the Ayn Rand article? Okay. I'm going to read the article now. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:46, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

An advocate? I better bust out the tags. I think you're just being modest. I certainly consider you a pioneer. Did the jug fit in your refrigerator door? Why do you deprive us of glorious video evidence? I want to be part of the magic. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:20, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Dravecky (talk) 18:30, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

The square milk jug is taking Wikipedia by storm. Congratulations! It took every last bit of self control I had to restrain myself from responding to the talk page inquiry about the qualities of "milk bags". People want photos of regular jugs for comparison, and there's already talk of FA status. You obviously knew what you were were doing when you didn't turn on the lights for the photos you took. I had my doubts at first, but now I realize what an ingenuous method it was to enhance the allure and mystique. Square milk jugs by candlelight! Of course milk bags are good too, and I hear they're especially popular in Canada? :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:50, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

I made a comment about bags, I love milk bags, but as you can read they don't have the crateless abilities of the square jug. I don't know if the jugs have come to Canada, they weren't there when I left, bags were still the main distribution vessel in the east and the bell jug is king in the west. As for my dim lit photography, maybe it was to increase the mystique and intrigue of the square jug, or maybe it was because I was taking the pictures at work and didn't have time to "set the mood", you can draw your own conclusion, but either excuse works for me! FA status of square milk jugs, could you imagine such a world! I wonder how large an article this could become....--kelapstick (talk) 16:26, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

Also my wife spilled milk this morning (but did not cry over it), however she is not ready to write it off yet!--kelapstick (talk) 17:47, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
Hmmmm... Based on this anecdotal evidence it appears she may not be as adept as you are at handling large jugs. Interesting. Is this a case of practice makes perfect? Or, in an effort to bail us both out of trouble, perhaps it has something to do with arm or wrist strength... ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:02, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

the article is well written

First off, the article is not particularly well written, it is written like an advertisement. Secondly, I personally can not delete the article, an administrator will after the deletion process takes place. Thirdly, GPirate is unlikely to pass the AfD process as none of the sources are reliable, and therefore can not be used to establish notability, which is mandatory for any subject to have an article on Wikipedia. Also if you are going to revert an edit (a major edit at that) which is not vandalism put something in the edit summary which explains why you did it, and discuss it on the talk page of the article, what you did looks a lot like vandalism itself, the user who removed a lot of the content explained that they were removing "unsourced and unencyclopedic material".

If you want GPirate to stay on wikipedia I suggest that you look for reliable sources independent of GPirate to establish notability. That way there will be no question as to if it should have an article or not.--kelapstick (talk) 00:50, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

If you have some time inbetween photo shoots, would you mind explaining to Mikey Schmidt[2] how to use hotcat? He tried, and I couldn't be bothered, but if you post on his talk page I'll read it and see if I can make any sense of it. It always seems best to me to have others do the grunt work, but I'm willing to try most anything once or twice. Thanks boss. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:26, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I appreciate your kind and generous help. You already impressed me with your deft handling of jugs and now you've gone out of your way to show your gentle touch with strangers. You're generosity is too legit to quit and you're mos def a hard core rhyme animal, the uncannibal, THE public enemy number one. Thanks G. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:10, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

I eventually caught up to the most awesome version. They are a team to be reckoned with from what I can gather. You'd fit right in. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:14, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

I didn't see anything that was salvageable. I think the article is probably deletable. Is it a college or a prep school? A recently established team from a multi-site University with no known coverage in reliable sources... Maybe a mention in the school's article? See here [3], "motion denied idiot"? I'd say the editing and collaboration efforts could stand some improvement. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:20, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Is this photo better? Unfortunately, I have some kind of primitive editing software that messes photos up if I rotate them. Some day I'm hoping I can save up enough to upgrade to an Apple IIc. ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:57, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the tools...

I appreciate the assist and input. I had done a little playing with Hot Cat previous, but was unsure. You have confirmed that I at least have to enter a couple genearl cats manually before being able to use it for expansion. And I will do some studying now on Twinkle and Friendle. Thanks much. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 22:26, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

No problem, I do find HotCat a little bulky at times, and will often manually look up the category (today I had to do that with Category:English football clubs, but that was mainly the whole football soccer thing...)I think that you will really like twinkle and friendly, they make things sooooo much easier. Happy editing!--kelapstick (talk) 22:32, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Michael Cohen

Can you give this article some time, this guy has thousands of re-published aritcles on the net its a metter of goign throught them to determine notable sources. The guys aritcles are regularly on coast to coast, dont know why thats not a notable source —Preceding unsigned comment added by Starrion1 (talkcontribs) 06:13, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

In order for Mr. Cohen to pass the notability guidelines he has to be the subject of significant coverage from reliable sources that are independent of the subject. For example, his articles can not be used to establish notability because they are by him and are not independent. Reliable sources are "third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy." I did not see any reliable sources that could be used to establish notability in the article, but good luck working on it though. If it does not pass the AfD you can always recreate the article here - User:Starrion1/sandbox, where you can work on it without it being deleted and work on references etc. before it goes into the mainspace and is under scrutiny by other editors. I am willing help you with it by reviewing, wikifying etc if you want.--kelapstick (talk) 16:59, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Snickers salad

Just add granny smith apples and cool whip.

Thanks very much for your help and comraderie. You're a pretty nice guy for a Canadian. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:50, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations, I am glad to see that your dream has finally come to fruition any chance of expanding it to DYK capacity? As an interesting anecdote, I have never eaten a Snickers bar (not a fan of caramel). And you are going to have to get a hold of some of these that you can't (or are hard to find) get here:
When we have visitors or return to the Motherland we are always sure get some.--kelapstick (talk) 17:57, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I think making it to DYK would be tough. But some day a photo will be added, and the full glory of this "salad" will be realized! Smarties are a popular Halloween candy and in candy mixes people put out in bowls. I've had the other two also I think, or similar bars. Tasty. What do you have against caramel? Do you eat poutine? Someone was trying to edit that article so it existed only in Quebec. I take it you didn't enjoy Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:34, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I just don't like caramel, don't know why, I just don't. As for poutine, I love it, there is a place in Timmins (I lived there once), called Chez Nous (Our place en Français), which also had a sign that said "Poutine Land". Anyway they had about 10 different types of poutine, and you could get it "regular" (shredded cheese) and "Quebec" (cheese curds, the actual way it should be served). Did you ever see the Rick Mercer show Talking to Americans where he told Bush Jr. that Canadian Prime Minister Jean Poutine was one of his largest supporters?--kelapstick (talk) 19:00, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
I'd like to try poutine. I've been to Quebec, but never had it! I haven't seen that show. But it sound good. :) I'll try to check it out. ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:53, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

He's got his own show, satire news, he came from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, which is equally funny. You should just make your own poutine, all you need are fries gravy and cheese, how easy is that (medical bills not covered)--kelapstick (talk) 21:57, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Arctic Ocean and Churchill

I see my error but maybe you should add a note. Commercial leaving Chuchill do not use the Arctic Ocean but in fact head directly to the Atlantic Ocean. Wikipedia itself states only two commercial ships have ever traversed the orthwest passage.

how about i just skip the tildes and just put my name. Normal people consider the words at underneath a message to be the name if it is seperate from the content of the message. I'd rather read wikipedia content then talk page guidelines. I learned years ago how letters are written and the rules apply everywhere.

bipolarintense —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bipolarintense (talkcontribs) 23:16, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Kelapstick has always been a stickler for the rules and he shouldn't be fooling around with Oceanic travel when his work on the square milk jug and snickers salad articles is still unfinished. Imagine the time and fuel savings we can achieve by melting the ice caps. I'm doing my part. -CoM
By all means state that all ships leave Churchill and go to the Atlantic, it would be nice if there was a reference to it although I know that you are right. As for using tildes to sign your messages, we do that because not only does it provide a link to the user page, and their talk page, but also it puts a time stamp so you know when the message was left. Usually if you don't sign a post, a bot will come by and automatically sign it for you, it has nothing to do with the rules of writing letters.
As for you CoM, I want that Snickers Salad recipe!--kelapstick (talk) 23:27, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Just between you and me, I snuck it in one of the citations! Shhhhh!!! I don't think I've ever had it, but it sounds nutritious. Let me know how it turns out. I wonder how it goes with a nice glass of milk? ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:52, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Gavyn Sykes

Hi Kelapstick, thanks for your contributions to the new and long overdue Gavyn Sykes page. I am really trying to get the page right so it's a valuable and accurate resource here =). Coupla points:

  • You have added the tag "This article describes a work or element of fiction in a primarily in-universe style. Please help rewrite it to explain the fiction more clearly and provide non-fictional perspective." Can you clarify how I can help achieve this and what the main issue was? The article is all factual (within the universe) as all elements depicted happen either in the 2 video games or in the 1 movie he appears in.
  • If you want to check you're happy that the copyright infringement no longer applies, then please feel free to remove the speedy deletion tag =) Let me know if there are still any concerns, and I'll fix them (although I can't see any). Thanks for your good work. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ewik (talkcontribs) 23:37, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
Hiya Ewik, I added the in-universe tag for two primary reasons:
  • Look at the introduction of Gavyn Sykes:
    • Lieutenant Gavyn Sykes was part of Bravo Squadron during the Invasion of Naboo
  • Look at the introduction for Luke Skywalker:
    • Luke Skywalker is the main protagonist of the Star Wars films...He is portrayed by Mark Hamill.
The second reason is most of the article is written like it is telling a story, but like you are actually in the story. You have to explain it as if the reader has never seen a Star Wars movie (hard to believe I know, but I worked with a guy who was 40 who never had). Because the article needs to be rewritten "out of universe" this will solve any issues, I don't know how copying from a free license page works here with our copyright policies, I will put a note on the talk page so it isn't deleted without an administrator who knows more than me looking at it, but again if it is rewritten (which it needs to be for wikipedia quality purposes) there will be no issue.--kelapstick (talk) 00:07, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Given your talents as a hooker

Could you do DYK noms for these: African American candidates for president of the United States and Black president in popular culture of the United States? I think they are interesting and timely. Lemme know. ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:30, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Good thing that sort of thing is legal here, I will take a look and see what I can think of.--kelapstick (talk) 18:41, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Did you know...that Shirley Chisholm was the first African American candidate for president of the United States in a major political party when she campaigned during the 1972 election?

Genius. How about add a date? Which election? Except use the title of the article. She was running for president. Winning the nomination is just the first step, but she was still running for president. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:02, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
She was running for the Democratic nomination, not the presidency, George McGovern won the nomination and ran for president. It would be good to get that she was the second woman to run, or the first for the democrats, but that is in her article not the one in question.--kelapstick (talk) 19:12, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
No way. She was running for president, and in order to win she needed the nomination of her party. Read her bio. You don't run for the party's nom, you run for president and the way to win is to become the nominee of one of the major parties.ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:16, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm using it. You snooze you lose. How's the other one coming? ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:17, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

The way it reads to me (as a non-American) is that she actually ran for president in the general election, and she was also the first African American to run for a Presidential nomination for a major party.--kelapstick (talk) 19:19, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Well the way our election works it's a long process, but you don't run for the party nom. You have to win that, but you are running for president. So it's cool. I nommed it (on your behalf). What's done is done. There's no going back. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:25, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Just to illustrate my piont, if you look at Gary Hart, Joe Biden, Jesse Jackson, etc. you will see they were candidates for president, not the party nom. That's not how we view it. The nom is part of the process, but that's not what they are a candidate for. No parliament here yo. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:29, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

The DYK people will mention any problems, so if a case has to be stated for wording I am sure you can handle it. I am editing my talk page in 3 different windows after about 10 edit conflicts...not sure which one is right...--kelapstick (talk)
And i think it should read "candidate for a major political party", I did change it on the DYK Page--kelapstick (talk) 19:35, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

How about

Did you know...that Sammy Davis Jr.'s 1933 role in Rufus Jones for President is considered to be the first portrayal of an African American president of the United States in popular culture?

The only issue is the "probably" in the article, it would be nice to firm that up, and I left a message about a move. I am running for "president in popular culture" next week.--kelapstick (talk) 19:32, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
See [4] joker. It's my page so I get to decide... I had a little bit of coffee and I'm a little jumpy, can you tell? That hook looks okay, let's do an alternate too though just in case. I'm partial to the comedians, I think it's notable that the idea of a joke has come to pass, but others may be sensitive to the idea that it is making fun of a black president. Can we have one saying ...that depictions of a black president in popular culture (United States) have been performed by X,Y,Z,L,P and Y? How are things out on the dairy? ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:50, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Did you know...that portrayals of an African American president of the United States in popular culture have been performed by Sammy Davis Junior, Dennis Haysbert, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Morgan Freeman, D.B. Woodside, Chris Tucker, Chris Rock and Terry Alan Crews?

Do you think the article should be moved to African American? I guess that makes sense, even though the terminology black was used for most of the history we are talking about. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:55, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I like it (more about the depictions than SDJ role), did you see my new title idea, getting rid of brackets. probably should be African American, that seems to be the president precedent for articles here. I don't work at the dairy, it is just in town, but I do know a guy there.--kelapstick (talk) 19:59, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

You know a guy? Does he hook you up with the good stuff? The issue of revising history is something I've pondered. If someone was born in Burma, do you say they were born in Myanmar? If these performances were about black presidents, is it appropriate to call them African American? I kind of think not. The Sammy hook is cool too, baby. ChildofMidnight (talk) 20:13, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I have to get my own milk at the bakery next to the dairy, but he is supposed to get all the milk he wants free, the ones that are dented etc. I think the black vs. African American is something that should be (or has been) decided by consensus. What nationality would you refer to someone as who was born in Sri Lanka when it was called Ceylon?--kelapstick (talk) 21:43, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I would say they were born in Ceylon and then clarify (now Sri Lanka) or something like that. You can't be born in a place that didn't exist. I think historical revisionism is a serious concern. Appropriate context is important to understanding events. But I do see that it's an issue. For example would we refer to someone as a negro if that's the term that was used when they were alive? No. But if there was something called Negro theater, I think it would be inappropriate to change it to African American theater. The issue for me with the black president thing is that there is overlap.

Did we decide on the hook yet? And what about hooks for Wiel Arets, West 8, Kees Christiaanse and dessert bars (did you know that bars are a Minnesota staple???). ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:33, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

All valid points, Honestly I don't know what the page should be called. You can put up both hooks, I think there is a space for an alternate hook in the template. I can take a look at the others at some time, but I need to get back to the work I was supposed to do earlier this week, I was going to procrastinate, but I think I have to put it off...--kelapstick (talk) 22:37, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Sauerbruch Hutton

Hook it up. The Sheffield University project is pretty big... ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:54, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

The part about the £21.2 million sounds ambiguous. It reads like Sauerbruch Hutton completed the construction for £21.2 million. But since they are an Architecture firm I am guessing they just did the engineering, was that £21.2 million? It was probably the cost of the construction that was done by someone else, I'm not used to projects that small so I really have no gauge for that sort of work. I was working to get Joe Dini our local casino owner/former state assemblyman up on the DYK block, now I can concentrate on more serious matters like European construction and chicken fried stubs--kelapstick (talk) 23:13, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Wow, I had no idea such a thing existed--I have to say, the two strips looked tastier! Perhaps we should make this a real Barnstar...but who else could possibly as worthy as ChildofM? Drmies (talk) 19:30, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I actually just made it today out of the left strip of bacon in your original barnstar. It could be a real barnstar I suppose, surely there are others who have fought for bacon representation, is there a WikiProject Bacon, if not there should be!--kelapstick (talk) 20:33, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Nice work... But I wonder if we've reached the end of our strip. Bacon shrimp might not even be enough for its own article... Drmies (talk) 20:43, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Such negative thinking from the Dutchman. Little does he realize...
When are we going live with the Choco-bacon? I'm ready to work on it. ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
I was going to go live once there was enough content for a DYK, 1500 characters, right now I think it s at about 800. But feel free to work on it in the sandbox.--kelapstick (talk) 05:23, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

I can't find the link to it anymore, so if you post a link on my talkpage that would help. And I meant to tell you I was looking at old photos, and the ones I took with my lil camera do get messed up when I rotate them, but not the ones i take with my bigger camera. Wacky. I blame the government. ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:48, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Jah Roots

Photos

How is it you can create bacon photo art, but can't make my uploads right side up? ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:30, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Magic grasshopper, magic...actually I use Paint.net its a free alternative to Photoshop. But as for rotating pictures you should be able to use plain old Windows Photo Viewer for that, shouldn't you? Unless you are one of those anti-windows people...--kelapstick (talk) 22:37, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Bacon art...could be an idea for the champion of all things baconian!--kelapstick (talk) 22:38, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
When I rotate photos using the basic software it crushes the image quality. And unfortunately the Canon software that came with my camera is designed for Apple or Macs or whatever thsoe toys are called. ;) ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:42, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Really, hmmm, well you could use some thing fancier like Paint.net, that you you can clear backgrouds too for stuff (like I did with the bacon). How is it that you have two of the same milk jug picture on your talk page but one is rotated and the other isn't?--kelapstick (talk) 22:44, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Never mind, I see they have different names--kelapstick (talk) 22:45, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
And if you look one is much higher quality than the other. Can't you take photo and rotate them and then re-upload them? YOu do most of my other work for me. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:27, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
The image size (dimensions) are the same, the only difference is the preview resolution goes down when you rotate it (probably so that it fits a certain preview height). Also when you open the image it shrinks to fit the screen (vertically). I rotated it (not using Windows) and it wound up with the exact same image size when uploaded. When you open in scroll over it you should see a magnifying glass with a + in it, that will take you to "full size" for the image.--kelapstick (talk) 23:45, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
Are you sure? I'll have to go check. I swear I used to get an error message that rotating would lower the image quality. But I didn't get it this time... Hmmmm. Now I'm grealty consternated. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:52, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Don't believe everything you read...:)--kelapstick (talk) 00:53, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
You appear to be correct! I will now be rotating at will!!! WOO HOO!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:54, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
I imagine a flurry of WikiPictures being rotated willy-nilly by CoM with his new found power...--kelapstick (talk) 00:55, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

K what's the difference between the two upright milk jug photos? I see one is a smaller file size. Indeed I'm thrilled that rotating doesn't mess up the photos. I never understood why it would. ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:10, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Also, were you going to do hooks for the articles previously discussed or should I take over? ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:24, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

By the way I just checked out the DYK stats page (Bacon explosion is 3rd all-time) and your Square milk jug story did quite well! Nice job. ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:53, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

There is no difference, feel free to revert back. I didn't realized the zoom thing until after I uploaded it. You might have to work on those hooks, the work is starting to get busy again...--kelapstick (talk) 04:32, 11 February 2009 (UTC)
Third in January, not bad, it's no bacon explosion but I will take it!--kelapstick (talk) 05:21, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Time to go live!

Would you please move the article to mainspace. I uploaded a photo for it and I want to leave a message for its author, but they need to be able to find the article. Gracias. ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:52, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Why do people do multiple hooks? Is there some advantage? ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:03, 14 February 2009 (UTC)
No, I don't think there is an advantage, more of a challenge because you created multiple related articles that qualify for DYK within the restricted time period, I once saw 8 or 9 new articles in a hook.--kelapstick (talk) 00:07, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

This user may be using many accounts to edit i would really like if you could investigate it. Thank you Kyle1278 (talk) 19:29, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

That's not using multiple accounts or sockpuppetry, the user may be editing anonymously, however there is nothing I can do about it. The only way you can check is to do a WP:CHECKUSER (only a select number of users have that ability), but that is always a last resort (and wouldn't be used in a case like this) and since there are it looks like they have no contributions, the articles they edited have been deleted. Really the only thing that you can do is keep the page that was deleted in your watch list, and if it is recreated tag it for CSD again if no one else does.--kelapstick (talk) 21:23, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Bantai

Why'd you delete my page!?! See Bantai page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mangaman117 (talkcontribs) 16:57, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

I didn't delete your page, it is still there (for now). But I did tag it for deletion, read the tag on the page, it states that the article has no context, or it does not identify the subject. Also the page is a recreation of an article that was deleted a month ago via the proposed deletion process for this reason:
"Non-notable book (is it a book) that is still upcoming. Has not had time to establish notability".
From what I have gathered by the content of the two times that you created this article is it is a book that you are writing that you are writing that has not been published (or maybe even written) yet. If it does get written and published and is covered by third party reliable sources that are independent of the subject (including the writer) which can be used to establish the books notability than it will have an article, but until then it will be deleted each time you (or anyone else) recreates it (note that it will be deleted by an administrator, not me personally.--kelapstick (talk) 17:08, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Kelapstick is a dream crusher. I thought about writing a book, but he'd just delete the article about the book before I was even finished writing the book. What's the point? ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:25, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
I was going to write the next book in the Twilight Series, but someone deleted my article before I started writing the book. Since them I have become such a stickler about this sort of thing.--kelapstick (talk) 03:41, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Such swift use of the delete button, simply delete content with the statement "non-notable" in the edit summary. Impressive, I wish I had such insight.--kelapstick (talk) 06:26, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Who did that, me? Wunder? Diff please. I liked the edit where he put in the intro: "She is not a philosopher" and also one where he put in BLAM, POW, THWAP after each zinger of a criticism someone put in. Fun stuff. Those would be much cooler tags than and [dubiousdiscuss]. ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:10, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Steve added some stuff including some open questions addressing the reading with his opinion such as

What this has to do with philosophical criticism, I don't know. You would almost think those so passionately against Rand were in a cult. But who? And what? And why?

Also there was removal of content from the race section with an edit summary of "Race: not notable" and from the homosexuality section with an edit summary of "Homosexuality: not notable". This was my reversion, which was quickly re-reverted with the explanation "hey, how about making your points on the talk page! it was not all deletion!". I really think your propose tags would be a helpful addition.--kelapstick (talk) 16:38, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

He does have a unique editing style. He's made some good points, but I suspect a rather weighty block may be headed his way soon. How are your casino and politician articles coming? ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:58, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Yeah I didn't disagree with everything he had to say, although I have limited knowledge of the subject, however the mass removal of content with no consensus (and it looks like there is little consensus on anything) and adding personal commentary into articles (when he knows better) will usually result in mass reverting. Joe Dini is in the Queue for DYK, the Dini's Lucky Club didn't have enough content to make the cut however, which is too bad because they serve a pretty good breakfast. Also Chocolate covered bacon got approved too.--kelapstick (talk) 18:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Good news

I can't tell you how happy I am to see you've been drawn into the Stick candy and Ayn Rand disputes. Now if I can just get you drawn into the Tina Turner kerfluffle, I will have scored the trifecta. These are joyous times indeed! ChildofMidnight (talk) 21:00, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I actually did bring up the discrepancy between when she left him in 1976 bud hadn't seen him in 35 years (or 2011). I really can not believe that calling her an icon is "controversial".--kelapstick (talk) 21:08, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
The issue appears to be a "design by committee" type standard that is blindly followed whereby the lead sentence of every article related to a musician should be: Fred Smith is a musician from XYZville, as if they are all interchangeable. This is very unfortunate and may take some time to correct. Obviously this standard, as indicated by common sense and the policy on leads indictates, ignores the fact that the lead sentence serves as an important summary and introduction of the notable significance and (in the case of biographies) the career accomplishments of the person in question. Unfortuntaely, once one bad introduction is approved with all relevant language gutted (what a great way to eliminate controversy!) others follow, and soon the Sheeple are flocking to poor habits of article writing. Anyway, no worries. It's all good. I'll just have to knock a few heads together. That was you correcting stuff on Tina? I noticed at the time, but got distracted with other stuff. Good job. Now, I'll have to create some new drama and see if I can pull you in. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:01, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Talk:Stick candy

Regarding your question and suggestion [5] [6]:

If the other editors would simply respect core policies, we wouldn't be discussing any of this. Until they learn to respect Wikipedia policies and guidelines, I'm taking the issues one at a time. First, they need to learn to follow WP:TALK, WP:CON, WP:CIVIL, and WP:DR. Then, they need to address the concerns about the advertising links. Then we can move on to the other issues which you're so concerned about. --Ronz (talk) 17:40, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

I really don't know what you are talking about, people seem to be using the talk page, although now that is the only venue we have so maybe it is by default. There was no consensus not to use those sources on the talk page, you are the only one who was opposed to using them although consensus is not a vote it is certainly not one person saying that they are right and everybody else is wrong. The discussion I initiated at the Reliable sources notice board is coming up with mixed reviews, but it certainly is not a consensus either way. Nobody has been uncivil. And we are in the process of dispute resolution. There were clear objections to your deleting of material, and you had every opportunity to ask about the validity of the sources rather than just deleting content because of your interpretation of a guideline. The discussion at the RS noticeboard clearly shows that there are interpretations that are different than yours, so I don't know what makes you think that you are right.
Wikipedia:Reliable sources is a guideline not a policy, if you had taken the time to read the the large banner at the top of the page you would see "This page documents an English Wikipedia content guideline. It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense and the occasional exception". If we allow a store's (and I really do not care what store) list of candy to be used as a source than it is not original research (I know OR is a policy not a guideline but if you took the time to read the large banner at the top of that page you would see "a widely accepted standard that should normally be followed by all editors" perhapes we should put a [weasel words] template after normally since no once can define what is normally done). The only reason you consider it original research is your inability to realize the difference between a policy and a guideline in the case of WP:RS. While the references provided are not ideal sources they are the best that there is right now short of the New York Times writing an article about the various dimensions of stick candy.
Lastly you put a level 3 warning template on Childofmidnight's talk page, someone who is an established user, a new (November) yes, but with over 12,000 edits, 5,500 in article mainspace defiantly established. While that doesn't violate incivility that does constitute bad form. If you are going to leave a warning on an established user's talk page at least have the courtesy of taking the time to write a personal message rather than using a template. Starting at level 3 isn't the right thing to do either, you should know better than that.--kelapstick (talk) 18:17, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
"I really don't know what you are talking about" You should have just stopped there. Did you even bother to look at the third opinion I requested. Did you notice the date I listed it? Did you notice the discussion that occurred prior to my listing it? Did you notice the discussions after? Did you notice the date of the RfC? Did you notice the discussions and editing that occurred after and when they occurred?
Yes, you really don't know what you are talking about. Too bad you chose to lecture rather than finding out, or simply asking questions. --Ronz (talk) 18:31, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

The Fifth Beatle (Film)

Hello, Kelapstick. You have new messages at MichaelQSchmidt's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

If you change the CSD to a redirect to The Fifth Beatle, you won't get any grief, and is is a reasonable redirect if someone does a seacrh for that term.

good point. will do. There is mention of the film in the article, at the proper name with a lower case f.

And just after my above note, I expanded the mention at the Epstein section diff and added cites. Should serve for now. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 19:32, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Sounds good, but the f in film should still be lowercase as per convention...--kelapstick (talk) 19:34, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Just done the tweak. No doubt it was recreated with upper case 'F' in order to get around the recreation of deleted material caveat. What is in The Fifth Beatle now comprises what can be properly sourced from the original article. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 20:04, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Oh sure.... [7] blame me (chuckle). Actually I was on the road before I could remind you that film aricles, even poorly reffed, are not generally speedied when recreated, becaue things can and do change rapidly in production. Then I was going to advise a simple redirect.... just as you have already done. Nice. Regards, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 00:32, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
How does the saying go? Shoot the messenger...or something like that.--kelapstick (talk) 00:34, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I can't find anything on the "Newfie gas chamber" usage. Once things settle down a bit, I'm willing to add it on good faith, but I suppose a stricter well sourced article might be the way to go for a while. I suspect using gas chamber in that way may be offensive to some, but it's a pretty accurate way to describe it I'd say. Tthere seems to be little I do on here that isn't offensive to someone... Exciting times!
I had Dutch oven on my watch list and people kept adding it and it kept getting removed, so finally I'm like: what's the big deal??? Anyway, thanks very much for your help with the disambig. and naming suggestion. I posted on my page wondering about the marijuana meaning and where that information belongs. A Husky? Do they allow dogs in the casinos? ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:31, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Some casinos, such as the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno do, John Ascuaga's Nugget Casino Resort (great oyster bar there by the way) does not, I don't think any in Vegas do. I am more partial to pugs myself.--kelapstick (talk) 19:34, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Interesting... Okay, I'm off to the farmer's market and then I'll try to expand the fart article so you can hook it. I'm thinking of setting up a sock account so it's not associated with my good name. ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:43, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Good name? You? When did that happen?--kelapstick (talk) 18:45, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
I find it disturbing that Farmers' market does not have any citations for the use these weasely worded statements:
  • usually held out-of-doors, in public spaces
  • renowned for being locally-grown and very fresh
  • often feature produce grown naturally or organically
--kelapstick (talk) 18:58, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

I would just take all that content you've mentioned out completely. Totally inappropriate and very POV. "Feature" produce??? Yikes, very misleading. And what exactly is meant by "produce"?[vague] "Very" fresh? No way man! NO WAY!!! Dispute it all.

My quest get Tina recognized as an icon and Michael Jackson's business interests foreclosed is not going well. But it looks like Ayn Rand is going to be a philosopher at least for a few weeks. Is 5 citations enough, I think at one point it had 12? But there's a fascinating talk page discussion about all the sources that don't mention her, let alone that she's a philosopher. :) I notice you haven't added much to the oven article. I suspect as soon as I start in on it, however, I will receive edit conflicts? Ah, the joys of wikipedia! It's finally sunny out here so I'm in high spirits. I started having flashbacks to my time in the Pacific Northwest. Plus I got some good grapefruit and a few cherimoyas for the misses (sic). ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:14, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

It's a double edged sword, you have to source Tina is a icon, but you don't source anything in the lead, so when you put it in it qualifies as being unsourced and is removed (and for other reasons that I do not agree with either). I really can not think of anything about the businessman comment, really he is a singer/dancer/bad actor (did you ever see Captain EO?), not a businessman. Look at Businessperson:

A businessperson (also businessman or businesswoman) is someone who is employed at usually a profit-oriented enterprise, or more specifically, someone who is involved in the management (at any level) of a company. The term businessperson almost always refers to someone with a "white collar" occupation.

I liked the comment I read at Ayn Rand one time (I really am trying to stay out of it) that if enough people call her a philosopher she must be one. Nobody said that she had to be a good one (I really don't know), developing a philosophy makes you one I would think, but I never was good at philosophizing. I wonder if any of the sources that don't call her a philosopher specifically say that she isn't one, cause there are a lot of sources that don't say a lot of things, that doesn't mean that they don't exist. I have never seen a million dollars, does that mean that it doesn't exist? I am out of the fart chamber article, I really don't know how much more content can be added, how much can one say about trapping someone under the covers when farting without having to go into first hand accounts? As for the stick candy, I am out, done, no more for me, if I didn't want to see how it panned out it would be off my watch list, but I am no longer posting on the talk page (notice I never edited the article so I will not be included in the nomination for lamest edit wars). I truly believe that it is a case of a rule preventing us from improving the encyclopedia so we should ignore it (which by the way is in fact a policy, where WP:RS is a guideline).--kelapstick (talk) 22:36, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
You almost sound a little demoralized. Not to worry! I will try keep you out of my petty feuds from now on so we can focus on the important stuff. I remember seeing something about Time magazine having done an article about bacon foods and I wanted to track that down, but I've been busy with other foolishness. I'm also going to start the Swedish stick candy article so I know you'll be right behind me on that... Even Ronz is calling for expansion on the Dutch oven article, so I'm confident we'll have a DYK before you know it. A photo seems more problematic, and I want you to know it's take every ounce of self control I have to resist putting a photoreq up on the talk page. If I could imagine what such a photo would look like I would do it. I think you might need to take a break and have some fun. I'll hold down the fort until you get back. Not to worry! ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:42, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
Not demoralized, I just don't care to argue with people who will not compromise, it is a lot like dealing with NIMBYs, environmental soapboxers and NGOs. I have enough on my plate to keep me away from stick candy, I just want to see what happens. Nobody has been particularly uncivil in this case in my opinion, snarky yes (for example when I was told in an edit summary that I didn't know what I was talking about), although maybe my definition of incivility differs from others. A dutch oven picture could be hazardous to someones health...for both the executor and recipient...--kelapstick (talk) 23:57, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Can you do a DYK nom for this one and maybe help me disambiguate it fromt eh other restaurant of the same name? Let me know if it's not long enough and I'll make it wordier. Polkagris is up. I made sure not to add any reliable sources because it's fun to see all the templates fly WOO HOO!!! :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:53, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh and you can do Lifeguard tower, MBM (architecture firm), and Florida State Fair too. Inbetween promoting Tina Turner's iconic status and making jokes I've been very prolific!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:56, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
You are about 150 characters shy of the 1500 limit, and I think your DYK window (5 days) expired 19 hours ago (unless my math is bad). I am on my way out the door so I won't have a chance to get to it today, I have an evening of Lost and Animal Crossing: City Folk ahead of me (plus watching all the programs that I haven't watched due to my Animal Crossing addiction). I can get to them tomorrow though.--kelapstick (talk) 00:59, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your good suggestions! Much appreciated. I threw a Florida State Fair hook up on the board so I wouldn't be late for once, but I'm open to it being changed. I'm going to expand the Lifeguard one and then see if I can't bulk up the Oven article. How did you do at Animal Crossing? There was a nice list article of the different animals and how many of them there are on each level or something that a young Wikipedian created and seemed quite excited about. I marked it as patrolled but the po po caught up with it and it didn't last long. :( The fury of the Tina and Jackson parties is fascinating to watch. <imagine my best MJ imitation squeal now> As I type this I'm wearing one glove. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:18, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
You probably see my DYK suggestions on your talk. Animal Crossing went quite well, I made almost $2,000,000 on the stalk market (about 4x what I had expected) (sic) selling turnips. Unfortunately there is probably no place for a list of AC characters here (there are so many that it would dominate the main article, my wife likes to go talk to them all, I like to try to hit them with a shovel or axe), there are more then enough game guides out there to cover it without needing what would no doubt turn into a fan site here, and commentary about what each character is like etc. I am quite excited to see how MJ and TT will turn out, and I see that people are questioning the inclusion of her legs in the article, perhaps that should be a spin off to Tina Turner's legs...ready...GO! Oh and did I just miss the overwhelming consensus here? I am not going to argue there was a consensus of reliability, but there is an implication of consensus of exclusion, which I must have missed.--kelapstick (talk) 17:35, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
One man's turnip is another's rutabaga I suppose. Thanks for your fixes and attention to detail on MBM. You are almost the only one to check that stuff. Okay, I'll be back in a while to fluff up the lifeguard towering and oven cooking. Hold down the fort while I'm gone!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:39, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Mining

Thanks for your invitation to the project, I'm happy to join. Regarding your request about the infobox template, I really like infoboxes in articles and not having one available for the Wiluna Gold Mine article I wrote made me create this one. To answer your last question, its yearly production. Especially for older mines an overall production figure could be hard to find or calculate while a yearly production figure tells a lot about the current size of the operation. I will have a look at what I can come up with as a general template, just have a look in User:EA210269/Sandbox, but it will properbly not be today as I'm a little busy turning 40. EA210269 (talk) 23:01, 20 February 2009 (UTC) Yeah, thanks for your invitation to joing the mining cabal Kelapstick. Thanks a lot. ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:15, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Dr. Nutting and us

Hello! Actually, I am heading offline myself -- you are welcome to work on the Dr. Nutting article if your schedule allows. Thank you for the tip on the category adding program. Pastor Theo (talk) 00:25, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, it appears our efforts were not appreciated: [9]. :) Pastor Theo (talk) 00:58, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
I saw that (as you can see by my comment), I have no doubt that it will pass AfD, he will easily pass the general notability guidlines, and as I pointed out Wikipedia:Notability (academics), my guess is a well meaning novice editor with a heavy hand with deletion nominations, I do it all the time (many of my AfDs fail).--kelapstick (talk) 02:49, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Is the Polkagris article long enough? The hook for CCB was excellentm of course. Good job. But it's been a while, so I wanted to give you a chance to get back in the game... ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:21, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Mine

Thanks for the Birthday wishes and now that I've mostly recovered from the occasion I got my act together and created the promised infobox. It can be viewed at Template:Infobox Mine and I've used it on the Balmain Colliery article to get an idea what it looks like in "real life". Check it out and let me know what you think needs changing. At this stage, with only one article using the template, changes are easily made. I've tried to incooperate a map but failed at it, it conflicted with the image. I will give it a go and see if I can fix it up somehow. Hope this infobox suits your needs, all the best from here, EA210269 (talk) 06:04, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

I wanted to have a map like the one you requested in it, too, but its unfortunatly beyond my skills to make it happen. It kept on conflicting with the image. We might have to ask an expert there, however, I don't know how to find one. Regarding the state/province issue, we can either have the label State/Province there (not so good) or go with two options and you choose the applicable one, my prefered one. I guess, in your case, Canada, Province is the more usefull one. I don't know where Territory would slot in, which Australia, like Canada, has too. I will change the template to have an option between the State and Province now. EA210269 (talk) 23:40, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
An even better adaption: You can now fill in yourself what you need, being state, territory or province and wikilink it, like I have done at Balmain Colliery, to States and territories of Australia. Regarding your two new categories, do we enter mines that operate as both, surface and UG , in both categories? EA210269 (talk) 00:01, 23 February 2009 (UTC)
I added your new categories to Australian Gold mines, where applicable but I think, we may have to create sub-categories soon, like Category:Underground mines in Australia to make it easier to find articles. Also, one more question, what about a mine that has strted as open cut, then depleted its pits and went on to UG mining from there. Would you still list them as surface mines? EA210269 (talk) 02:51, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

I've implemented the change as suggested by User:Franamax into the template, works a treat! Have a look at Balmain Colliery now. EA210269 (talk) 00:16, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

EA, there's another thread going at my talk page, so please don't run too far ahead of that. I'm still working on my test template and I'm completely revising the field numbering to put the map up top as Kel suggested. If you're adding fields or changing stuff, it's going to be very hard to merge in what I've done next.
You can take a look at this version to see how I renumbered the fields to allow for future changes. Maybe you can do the same at {{Infobox Mine}} to match what I've got so far.
And maybe we should all do our talking at Infobox Mine from now on to keep things together? Franamax (talk) 00:50, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Hecla Mining

Am I part of the mining cabal now? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:41, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

Impressive, I am surprised they didn't have an article about them, they are pretty big. I sat in on a presentation about one of their Alaska operations (Greens Creek that you mention in the article) at the Northwest Mining Convention in Reno, and there was a show about the Lucky Friday Mine on the History International channel the other day, it was pretty interesting. They still use safety fuses (i.e. light the fuse with an actual lighter rather than an electric detonator where you just tap the wires to a 6 volt battery). Safety fuses are illegal in most (if not all) provinces/territories of Canada.--kelapstick (talk) 19:05, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
Mining is an interesting business. A bit of a resurgence lately even in the United States. But in Australia they do some serious mining. No pesky EPA bugging them as they dig the heck out of the Earth. Have you ever had to sell any metal? Where can I get the best price for some silver I inherited? I don't like anything that tarnishes. So gold is okay. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:40, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
Nevada is really mining friendly, just about as friendly as Canada is to it. I have never had to sell any gold/silver, although I do have some I would like to. There was a place in Sudbury that would buy scrap gold/silver from you, not at market price but for not a bad price this has a couple places you could look, but I am sure there are a lot of places that do it, just check how much they pay an ounce and check it against kitco. --kelapstick (talk) 16:40, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. Interesting and useful. What do you make of Bryan Slusarchuk? ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:01, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Usually the CEO of a company is notable, however a junior mining company, maybe not. The company could probably have a page (I saw some coverage in the Northern Miner (a newspaper that deals with mining)), but you needed a subscription to access it, which I don't have. The article is pretty poorly written and I don't have the time today to look at it, some copyediting could help though.--kelapstick (talk) 16:15, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

In a word, yes. You came to Wikipedia and your first order of business was to jump into a heated debate, and that is the only thing you have done, in spite of my suggestion to branch out and do other things. This edit was completely disruptive and unnecessary. The goal of Wikipedia is to make an encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and a protected page is contrary to that goal. The editors of the Ayn Rand page are trying to come to a compromise to make the page editable again and you jumped in and said that you are going to rewrite the article in some disruptive way, even if at the end of your message you said that you wont really do it, it will still make an administrator think twice about lifting the protection.
I am going to say this again and I hope that you listen to me. Edit pages constructively and without controversy to begin, it will give you a feel for the way the project works and improve your abilities as an editor. Take Ayn Rand off your watchlist (if it is on there) and don't go back for 3 months. In the grand scheme of things the worldwide view of her as a philosopher or not will not have changed. And as a rule of thumb your edits to articles should make up the bulk of your edits, defiantly more than 50%.--kelapstick (talk) 16:26, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Subliminal Noise Deletion

OK, I see what you are saying, but I do not understand the way you put it. What would you suggest I do to make my page so that people will not delete it as soon as it is published? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jworules (talkcontribs) 22:26, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

You are going to have to indicate why the band is important enough to be included in the encyclopedia. One of the principles of Wikipedia is notability. Read that link, seriously before you do anything else, do that. Because if a subject (in this case a band) is notable, which in a nutshell means that they have been the subject of significant coverage by reliable sources that are independent of the subject (the band's website will not qualify under independent of the subject, or reliable sources), than they if a Wikipedia article is written about them it will not be deleted. In the case of musicians and bands, there is a subset of criteria for having an article if there is a question of the band's ability to pass the general notability guidelines, it is located at WP:BAND.
I am going to give you an example of things that are notable and some things that are not. I live in a small town in Nevada, in the United States. Clearly the United States is notable (as all countries are) and has an article, as is the state. The town has an article as most towns do, as to the major state and federal highways leading into the town. The individual streets in the town do not have articles. The mayor of the town does not have an article even though he is one of the most important people in town, but no major newspapers have ever written stories about him (except for maybe the local newspaper mentioning that he won the election) and he has never been the subject of a book or a major news story, however a successful professional boxer was born here, and he has an article written about him. One of the Casinos in town has an article since it is the oldest family owned casino in the state, however the drug store across the road from it does not have an article written about it because it is just a drug store. The downtown post office has an article because it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, however the other post office does not because, well it is just another post office.
Reading the article you had written it looked like Subliminal Noise was a group of people who played in a band together at some local gigs, in which case there is no chance of the article not being deleted as soon as it is published because they do not pass the notability guidelines. If they are able to pass the notability guidelines or the guidelines for bands, you are going to have to explain how and why they do, and show proof that they do. I hope this makes things clearer for you, read the links that I left in the lead paragraph, also you should read WP:FIRST, a guide to writing your first article. Many users jump into Wikipedia by creating an article right off the bat, which is not a good idea, it is better to edit articles first to get to know the way things work around here. Hope I have helped.--kelapstick (talk) 23:40, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Who has time to read this explanation? Is there a cliff notes version? ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:48, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
I had time to write it CoM, surely you can take time out of your busy schedule of debating Ayn Rand and Tina Turner (how often do you get to use those two people in the same sentence?) and the yet to be constructed bacon cabal to read it. The cliff notes are on Kyle1278 & Jw'ss pages.--kelapstick (talk) 00:11, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Yet to be constructed? I beg to differ. You are apparently unaware of user:BACON EXPLOSION (recently blocked indefinitely, good help is hard to find). Of course Drmies had his membership suspended recently, but the cabal lives I assure you. I think Tina and Ayn have a lot in common. Have you checked out the Arb Com's decision? Still being discussed, and I can't really grasp the whole process and outcome, but as best I can tell they concluded I was right all along about everything involved. What are you working on? Anything interesting? I'm going backwards in new page patrol checking out stuff that was never reviewed. Nothing too shocking so far. Cheerio(s)! ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:58, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Do you know how to disambiguate make this a dismabig page:Porculus? Isn't there a template? If it's going to be a über long explanation I don't want to know. Also, do you want to disambiguate the tiki page in a disambig page for tiki, tiki culture, etc. That would be fantastic. What's up with your user page? ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:45, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I will get back to you on most of this tomorrow, I usually just copy a DAB page when I make it, don't know if there is a template, I can do it if you want or you can...meh...Nice work on my userpage...classy!--kelapstick (talk) 06:20, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Subliminal message for Kelapstick

No more links?

Haven't tried to place one there, but will you please tell me where the "no more links" thing came from and why on the Coal mining article? Have not seen that before, and seems a bit arbitrary and harsh. Mervyn Emrys (talk) 01:21, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Template:No more links is the template, it isn't arbitrary, or harsh. This version of the article coal mining had the following links:
  • Photos of Mining from Eastern PA
  • Abandoned Mine Research
  • [2]. Excellent educational resource on longwall mining, provided by the University of Wollongong.
  • National Coal Mining Museum for England
  • World Coal Institute - Coal Mining
  • World Coal Institute - Environmental Impacts of Coal Mining
  • West Virginia (USA) Coal Mining
  • A short historical account of the coal seams and mining industry of North Staffordshire, UK.
  • Old photographs and historic ephemera relating to the mining industry and related labour struggles in North Staffordshire, UK.
  • NIOSH Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program
  • The Powder and Bulk Channel
  • The Virtual Museum of Coal Mining in Western Pennsylvania
  • Aerial photographs of coal mines in Wales
While not excessive some of them are too specific for a world wide coal mining article (geographically specific), coal mining has a history in many places, why select these ones in particular to be in the Wikipedia article? That is not to say that there can never be any links added, but a discussion should take place before any more are added. Some of the links that are included may be questionable also, but nobody has removed them. Also some articles like this tend to attract people wanting to use it for advertising. Mining specifically does gain a lot of linkspam attraction.--kelapstick (talk) 03:53, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I see your point, and I'm not objecting in this instance, exactly, but how does the use of this template come about? Can anyone use it? Is there any discussion between editors before it is used? Seems like pretty strong medicine in the hands of a single individual. Mervyn Emrys (talk) 04:30, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm thinking Aunty Entity's words may be of some use here: "You think I don't know the law? Wasn't it me who wrote it?" More here from the Mayor of Bartertown [10]. A place not unlike Wikipedia in some respects. Drew its power from the underworld and pig shit. ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:57, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
I don't think that discussion is needed to initiate it, but it would probably be a good idea. If including the template were a problem any Wikipedia editor would be well within their editing rights to remove it. And the template does not stop people from adding links (as can be seen in coal mining), and many good faith editors (not just spammers) choose to ignore it, I don't know if it actually ever stops anyone, perhaps a strong placebo in the hands of a single individual is more appropriate.--kelapstick (talk) 06:19, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Need Some Help

Hey i have been working on a template for the List of neighbourhoods in Edmonton and it dose not want to update on any of the article it is on i would really be great full if you could help.Kyle1278 (talk) 17:52, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

You may just have to wait a little while, I had that problem once when I was updating a German football team template (I forget how I got there). I edited it and it took about 30 minutes for the change to show up in the article, not sure why it did it, but it did. When you click the edit button on the template in Edmonton it takes you to the newer version, so I don't think there is anything wrong, check back on it in an hour or so it should be working, if not I will look into it further.--kelapstick (talk) 18:02, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
OK thanks for the help. Kyle1278 (talk) 18:03, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for butting in, but I had the same problem and its quite simple to fix. It will show up the changes to the template as soon as you save a change in the article it is in. Took me quite a while to figure that one out! EA210269 (talk) 23:46, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Excellent, good to know. By the way, what happened to the production line on the mine/gold mine infobox template, it is showing the year but not the production (tonnes or ounces), any ideas?--kelapstick (talk) 23:56, 5 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok thanks for the help. Kyle1278 (talk) 23:53, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

I need some help too. Could you take a look at the Clams casino article and let me know how much more I have to expand it for it to qualify for DYK? Also are you up for hooking it? I tried to make it as controversial and exciting as possible. Did you know... that Clams casino is wanted for armed robbery in 7 states and the District of Columbia? I recommend hotdish, seven-layer salad or dessert bars for your potluck. ChildofMidnight (talk) 23:25, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh you need help alright...but let's not get into that. Somehow my user/talk page got off my watch list, although I still get new message thing at the top. Clams Casino is long enough (that's what she said) for a DYK, +1,600 so you are good to go. What is wrong with the hook you have? I like it. I will take a look and see what I can find, I have to take a break every now and then between accounting/engineering/geo-fantasy. Did you see I got Cortez Gold Mine up, I have a line in on a couple of pictures, supposedly a tower shot of the entire property, but we will wait and see. The bacon explosion has been in high demand since I brought it up at one of the gatherings for the mom's group my wife attends, although I was thinking of some traditional ethnic Canadian foods, like the Quebec Pizza (pop tart with ketchup), or the traditional Montreal Breakfast (Jos. Louis and Pepsi), poutine would just be to difficult at someone else's house...but a Snickers salad, that might be the way to go...I used Betty's Hot Pot recipe one time, turned out great.--kelapstick (talk) 23:49, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Pizza-ghetti is a sure crowd pleaser... Pop tarts with ketchup sounds fairly awesome as well. And you can't miss with Snickers salad, just ask user:Royalbroil. Do the Lutherans in Minnesota count as a foreign nation with a unique cuisine? I dare you to try glorified rice (and it needs a picture!!! Just imagine all the shadows you could cast on it. Come to think of it I think we could put in the Snickers salad photo and no one would be able to tell the difference...). Don't forget to come up for air every now and again. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:28, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
You mean the picture in snickers salad isn't glorified rice too...I was fooled on that one! If I get a better picture (read more shadowy) I will upload it.--kelapstick (talk) 00:38, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
You've seen one cool whip dish you've seen them all? I went ahead and nommed Clams casino. I had the urge to do something productive for a change. Feel free to revise, it's under March 7. I'm still counting on you to hook the article on Tina Turner's legs once it's finished. First I have to wrap up my work on Michael Jackson: businessman. I had no idea he spent so much time running his office supply business. Maybe you have a franchise out there in Elko? ChildofMidnight (talk) 04:50, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
did you know...that Tina Turner's legs is the best selling cocktail at Micheal Jackson's Bar and Grill? We're closer to Reno than Elko, but I drove through Elko once, it's kind of like how Harry Chapin describes Watertown, New York, "I spent a week there one afternoon".--kelapstick (talk) 05:16, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

I think that show Jericho must be based on Elko. When shit goes down, those people out there are ready. I swear they are armed to the teeth. I'm just not sure whether they're with me or against me... maybe both. ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:50, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry if your colleague feels miffed, but replacing 'firing' with a euphemism rubbed me the wrong way. It's not nice to be both fired and euphemized. Drmies (talk) 16:10, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
I didn't throughly check the sources, but from Coronation Street (which I can no longer watch now that I don't get CBC television here), being sacked (or being given the sack) usually[weasel words] means fired, but in this case they are doing it to cut costs so I would say it is a layoff, I'm not a big fan of redundant, if I were redundant it sounds like they had two of me. Here is a case of being sacked. In this economic climate it is generally not a good idea to take part in an illegal strike.--kelapstick (talk) 16:22, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
I got one for you here (right here, that is)--without a strike, illegal or not... Drmies (talk) 16:46, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
My wife is a teacher (when she is in Canada and can work), they used redundant a lot (more if you were redundant at your school you would be moved). I was talking to a guy here about the Xstrata layoffs, he said in the early 80s when gold was $250/oz the company was producing for $300/oz and would actually lose money if they mined, so when the union went on strike, they said...OK, go ahead...and didn't bother negotiating with them.
In the US, that's what we call "right-to-work," I think, which means the right to get fired without much fuss. My wife is a teacher also--one of those 650. I added a note to your place of residence. Nice club--they serve lunch? I'd like some right now. Drmies (talk) 16:57, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Those are good edits you made to Mount Keith Mine, thanks, and I fully agree with your renaming it and your other tweaks. I know nothing about mining (or much else, really) so I stuck to what was there. I don't think there's enough to get a DYK out of, haha. Drmies (talk) 17:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunatly it is too old to get a DYK out of, unless there is a 5x expansion coming, but I don't see that happening. Nice work on the Darcy Farrow portion of Yerington, Nevada, I was going to delete that section but now there is a citation it actually has credibility. He was probably incognito. Yeah, that's what I meant, that there's not enough there for a 5x expansion. I think I pulled in all the sources from Google News and Books (the ones I could look at, anyway). And what would a hook be here anyway? Drmies (talk) 17:27, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
...that in 1971 the Mount Keith Mine mine was thought to be able to provide 10% of the world's demand for nickel?--kelapstick (talk) 17:30, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Mount Keith

I think, it pretty much has to be Mount Keith Mine or Mount Keith Nickel Mine, as all there is is the mine, no town or setlement anywhere near by. Good work on the Categories by country, it will make things much more transparant. EA210269 (talk) 20:55, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, you would not believe the mess it is going through these categories..--kelapstick (talk) 20:06, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
That's why I always leave that to others, haha. Drmies (talk) 22:33, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

DYK...

...that the children's novel Just David (1916) was the second in a series of four consecutive bestsellers in the US for Eleanor H. Porter (author of Pollyanna), and that the novel was also published in Braille (1922), Chinese (1959), and Russian (2005)?

OK, I tried, but I'm no master. (But I bet you didn't know this!) Plus, I don't know if the article is expanded enough, it hasn't survived AfD yet, and an editor tagged it for a not-so-good lede (but that can be fixed). Do you care to have a look? Oh, can I join your Bacon Cabal and one of those really cool bacon stars on my user page? Yay! Drmies (talk) 19:54, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Your hook is too long, 253 characters, how about...
...that the 1916 children's novel Just David by American author Eleanor H. Porter, and was also published in Braille in 1922, Chinese in 1959, and Russian in 2005?
OR...that the 1916 children's novel Just David was the second in a series of four consecutive bestsellers in the United States for Eleanor H. Porter?
The 5X expansion is only if the article is older than 5 days old, which it isn't (March 11, so you have to get it in today/early tomorrow), and your length is well over 1,500 characters (don't know exactly how many characters but well over). However the tags are an issues, but post on the DYK page that it is up for AfD, but as a best selling novel it shouldn't have any trouble passing that, (it should almost be a snowball keep). Your Bacon star has been added, hope it serves you well.
The bacon is delicious, thank you very much! Kelapstick, which template should I use? "New Article by someone else"? But the original author delivered only a stub that deserved the scrutiny it got, and they deserve no credit for the current state of the article. The main work on it has been done by myself (edits, writing, research) and Collectonian (edits), and a little (solid) help from Benjiboi. I don't know if Collectonian wants any credit--she's tried her best to get it deleted but did write an excellent plot summary. Please advise! And I think I'm going with the last hook, if you think bestsellers sell. (Though I love the totally incongruent facts about braille, Chinese, and Russian.) Drmies (talk) 21:08, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Use the new article, the original author as the creator (even if all they did was stub it) and you as nominator and contributor, and you can include multiple co-editors, if they don't want credit they can delete the DYK message on their talk page when it is put on. Glad to help.--kelapstick (talk) 02:01, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I did it! I'm so excited... and I just saw that the AfD has been withdrawn. So now I can have a beer and blissfully listen to The Reverend Horton Heat, a bootleg from a show in The Hague. BTW, I hope I made the Bacon Cabal proud, with extensive edits (and tag removal) to Bacon, and drastic measures at Bacon bits, Bacon Salt, and Baconnaise. Drmies (talk) 03:15, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Mines and mining towns

I noticed you removed mine categories for a number of mines that are redirects from their community, such as Bagdad mine and Congress mine. I'm sure this was inadvertent, but please be aware that many mining towns and their mines are in a single article. Best, Pete Tillman (talk) 00:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

It was intentional. While I understand your point, I disagree. Bagdad, Arizona is not a mine it is a community, it is in the category Category:Mining communities in Arizona, that should be enough. Typically a mine is notable enough to have a stand alone article, regardless of if it is the primary employer in a community, and typically communities are inherently notable. I did come across an option while I was category sorting, by putting the category in the redirect, it shows up in italics in the category listing, but not in the community article, an example is Springhill mine which redirects to Springhill mining disaster, note the location of Category:Coal mines in Canada. I will bring up the question at WP:MINING tomorrow, this is a decision that should have consensus from the community.--kelapstick (talk) 03:21, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Mount Lyell was and is a copper mine - the current company is a different name - but due to the historic significance of the company in Tasmania and Australia and name I have reverted you and placed a comment on the talk page. If for whatever reason you have a problem about it - the current status of it all is that Queenstown Tasmania - was and is the community, Mount Lyell Mining... was the dominant longest lasting company and name of the mine, and as far as the Tasmanian project stands - no one has considered any other way of putting it. There are some issues perhaps 'in' Tasmania and 'on' - 'mainland' Australia where the company and mine and community are known by a single name - and as a consequence separate articles have not been created. cheers SatuSuro 09:39, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

btw it is really great to see some dedicated hard work in the mining project - it was quiet there for a while - but it is great to see some fresh enthusiasm - there is so much more to do! SatuSuro 09:43, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

By reading the article (at least the lead) it looks to be more about the company that operated a mine, not necessarily the mine itself. Similar to the way that Granby Consolidated Mining, Smelting and Power Company, Limited ran the Phoenix Mine (the only mine mentioned in the article), or Nanisivik Mine operated in the town of Nanisivik, Nunavut. If they only operated one mine I could understand why they might be categorized as a mine, but they did have other ventures (railways, as shown by their name). If they operated multiple mines than there could potentially be articles for each of them. I was going with a Bold, Revert, Discuss technique with these recent edits, I expected some flack from them and am glad to see some interest coming forth.--kelapstick (talk) 14:31, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

From my experience (having been an employee of Mt Lyell way back then) the company was considered to be sysnonymous with the mine - the railway thing was just ancillary to getting the copper out - so in the article it had various workings over time - but the place 'was the mine and the company' - so even if some bright spark starts up an article about the various workings on the lease - I would still consider that in the material about the location, the lease, the workings, and the various arts of the mine - that it remains th same. I am sure there will be other isimkilar situations around the place. keep up the good work! SatuSuro 14:43, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Fair enough, did they operate a mine called the "Mount Lyell Mine" in a town called Mount Lyell or something similar, cause that might be something to include in the lead.--kelapstick (talk) 15:16, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Mount Lyell copper mine

Sounds like a good idea, it would keep everybody happy, I think without eliminating the need for an article in the future. In any case, to not forget about it, we could just also list it in your new requested Articles page. EA210269 (talk) 14:19, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh well Ill be around to bug you guys that the company article is sufficient to 'hold' the issues of the lease and the copper mines and the mining operation in the one article - dont expect me to shut up about it quickly - i worked at the bloody place - underground and above ground and as a geological field assistant - and I would say that it would be unencylopediac to create a separate 'copper mine' article when the actual complexity of the company/town/mine inter-relationships in such localities is not worth splitting separate artiles out for - damned it i should have been off 2 hours ago - there are heaps of western australian towns/mines - if you separated the mines and towns into separate articles I am sure it would look bloody stupid - oh well enough from me SatuSuro 14:30, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Fair enough, get some sleep.--kelapstick (talk) 14:32, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
That is not to say that in time with right amount of reliable sources (sic) that there could be goood reason for separate articles about the mining operations from the various companies that have run them - but hell - the articles about Queenstown, Tasmania, Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company and a few more would have to be up to much higher standard and considerably longer before there might be a need for a separate article about the operations on the major lease - with the right time and etc - there are sometime in the future also potential articles abut the underground railway system and tunnels, the famous slag heap, as well as the smelters - of which Robert Sticht was the main creator - it is if done properly worked on a category in itself - literally - at least 12 articles I can think of :( good night SatuSuro 14:39, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
(efter e/c)My main issue is with the category, create a redirect called Mount Lyell Mine which includes Category:Copper mines in Australia and redirect it to the company, that way when the reader is looking through Category:Copper mines in Australia, they see Mount Lyell mine but get redirected to the company, they get all the same information but the company isn't categorized as a mine (since locally synonymous or not a company is not a mine, it operates a mine), and the same can be done for communities that redirect to mines or vise versa. Anyway get some sleep, nothing is going to be done for a while anyway, and feel free to join WikiProject Mining, it looks like you have lots to contribute and we need all the help we can get.--kelapstick (talk) 14:32, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Hausstock

Hey Kelapstick, maybe as a miner you might could have a look at the opposite: a mountain, with a geological note (well outside of my expertise). There was, incidentally, a kind of mining disaster nearby in the village of Elm, Switzerland in 1881. And...if you have a moment, can you think of a DYK hook? Something about Russians in 1799 and Swiss tanks today, maybe? Thanks! Drmies (talk) 18:56, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Drmies is very Southern. I bolded the key bits of his comment, but even after removing commas I can't quite figure out exactly what's going on... Is he drinking at work again? Auburn plays on Tuesday and if they keep wining he's going to owe me big! ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:42, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Haha, only coffee, only coffee...which tasted extra good after homemade enchiladas, extra spicy! But if I'm a Southern man, at least I "I cannot gest, rom, ram, ruf, by my letter"! And do you like my new favorite mountain? (I choose to ignore your Auburn comment.) Drmies (talk) 20:02, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
That actually sounded like French Canadian to me. I will take a look, I had a glance to see about the expansion, are you sure that is 5x?--kelapstick (talk) 21:47, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
b. Are you kidding? and thanks! You know I always appreciate your help. a. It's Chaucer (in the shape of the Parson) putting down Northerners--England is one of the few countries in the world where the South is "civilized" and the norm. Of course, Chaucer puts that in a formalist poetic perspective also, equating alliteration with archaism--for the Parson, end rhyme, which comes to English from the Romance languages, is the norm. (I know I'm not telling you anything new, Kelapstick--this is for the benefit of our mutual friend and troublemaker.) Drmies (talk) 23:28, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I am looking into a hook, but it looks like the pass would make a more interesting hook...I will see what I can do.--kelapstick (talk) 01:23, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Did you know ...that Hausstock is part of the nummulite formation of the high Glarus Alps and a popular European mountaineering destination? ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:51, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

That has nothing to do with tanks or Russians, or bacon, the cornerstones of a good DYK hook.--kelapstick (talk) 02:01, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Today some anon had to add that bacon is one of the main ingredients in clams casino. How funny is that! Have you ever had that dish by the way? Did I already ask you and Drmies? I forget. The Russian retreat thing seems like a bit of a stretch. I liked the nummilite and Glarus alps thing, then you throw in the mountaineering and maybe a bit of skiing and you've got something. Pass the penguin. Hey clam bakes are amazing. Have you ever been to one or eaten the results? Wow. If it's done right and the real thing it's pretty amazing. But then I'm a fan of the lobstah and steamahs. So there you go. Have y'all found somewhere to put the nuclear waste yet? ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:49, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I think I have had clambake before, my wife is from The Maritimes, so seafood is always welcome here (although at the price the clambake to go got kiboshed pretty quickly). The mountain article is all over the place, no "theme" to hold it together, sort of like 30,000 Pounds of Bananas. The mountain is long enough and has the picture, if you can get a catchy hook to go with it you could probably hit DYK stats (picture+catchy=many hits, look at bacon explosion). Did you notice that Ninja miner got put up one day after it got nominated. Now that was a catchy hook. I get a kick out of the whole Yucca Mountain debate, McCain's (the senator not the french fry company) being questioned about not wanting the nuclear waste to be shipped through Arizona but it's OK to do it through Nevada? I think that was more "I don't want it driven through Phoenix", which makes sense, you shouldn't just drive nuclear waste through a major city, although they used to drive the Yellowcake from Bancroft to southern Ontario through Toronto on flatbed trucks for processing...but hey that was the 60s, nobody knew what to do with it. I also find it amusing how nuclear power is so controversial here, we do it all the time in Canada, and CANDU reactors are very safe. It is my general perception that Nevadans are paranoid, is it like that everywhere?--kelapstick (talk) 03:05, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
If the black helicopters try to set down anywhere near Elko they are going to be in for a big surprise. WOLVERINES!!! ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:48, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I read the Ninja miners article (great work, K-stick) but not the hook. I did not find a closer connection between Hausstock and bacon than this one. I think it can't be done. BTW, I'm also paranoid about nuclear power--unless, of course, those plants are on a border (with Georgia, I reckon) and the prevailing winds blow thataway. No, I have not had clams casino, and yes, you did ask me, but no, I never answered, since I thought it was some gambling game or something, haha. (I'm a puritan, really.) Is this a reliable source [14]? ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:26, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Absolutely, you ever read cooking for engineers? Lots of interesting cooking tests/product reviews/recipes with pictures. Check out Bacon II, with the pre-microwave. I read something about cooking only a couple pieces at a time since if you do a lot it "boils" in its own fat rather than frying.--kelapstick (talk) 00:34, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Interesting. From what I've read they say broiling it in the oven on those wavy panse that it can drip through is the way to go. I've only ever cooked it in a frying pan, so I guess I'm old fashioned. I had one thought about the Woodman's/ Woodman's double hook. Was it always called Woodman's? Because the way I phrased the hook it "became" that. Which I guess is okay, I mean that it became the restaurant. I don't know. Maybe it's fine. Maybe the word "restaurant" needs to be added at the end. Or maybe the word became should be changed. Whatever you think. It's a great hook. Although I still miss the advantage of double hooking. There's no incentive. :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:21, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

You might want to reconsider your SD tag. I just had a PROD contested on the grounds that the five articles linked constituted RS. Sacred Headwaters/Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition/Klappan

Hi; following up on your awhile-ago comment about this, I made some changes and a name proposal re Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition on Talk:Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition, which is almost entirely about the Klappan coalbed methane proposal and should be retitled as such, as otherwise it was serving only as a p.r. brochure fo the SWCC and therefore something like fundraising spam. Part of my reasoning is that the SWCC page, by its title, was deceptive and should really have a title where WP:Energy, WP:Mining etc can be brought into the action. Too much of Wikipedia is being used as p.r. machine, whether by politicians and their handlers/consultnats or by envirogroups or by First Nations or anyone. I swear, somewhere out there, someone is giving courses in how to manipulate Wikipedia for marketing/p.r. purposes....it's really getting quite tiresome, and there's not enough NPOV editors/volunteers out there, and a lot of admins are, well, just teenagers with little political perspicacity and experience to know what's NPOV and what's not or to get the point of orchestrated wordings etc....I"m kinda preoccupied with life-survival at the moment so there's a variety of hot-button topics that I'm having to not get to myself, or I'd just make a Klappan Coalbed Methane Project article by stripping/integrating all the related content from theS SWCC and associated Tahltan and Skeena/Nass articles and wherever and "just doing it". Similarly there's tons of new material on BC Legislature Raids and the Sale-of-BC-Rail scandal (see http://billtieleman.blogspot.com and google "Basi-Virk" for more that's "in need of doing" (and likely to be a major edit war, as p.r. agencies have tried to control those pages in the past, likewise Gordon Campbell (Canadian politician) and other associated-politician pages. One ht environmental front alone, beyodn Great Bear Rainforest (which I've largely de-POVized), there's a host of p.r.-dominated/POV articles that need stripping, even prodding, and I keep on coming across town and resort/industry articles that are little more than promotional brochures; in town-cases often with very badly-written history and "bad geography"....even in history there's heaps to be done at Alaska boundary dispute and, while some people no dobut think I'm over-busy in Wikipedia, the reality is I can't be busy enough; I tend to avoid the big topics by fixing coords and adding cats and only "skirt" the big topics, sometimes because they're so stressful (BC Legislature Raids...)....sometimes I wish I was a mapmaker so I could just limit myself to that but I don't think I'd have the willpower to avoid all the politically-sensitive materaisls....the pretentiousness of much environmental/ecological content has me aghast at times, in many ways it's more noxious than company/corporate p.r. work.....anyway all that said just wanted you to know I totally agree about Sacred Headwaters, and yes a dab might be suitable but as there are no other such-named places anywhere there might be some dispute. To me that term is more suitable for places like Mount Kailasa, which is the source of the Brahmaputra/Tsangpo and Ganges and Indus.....and I doubt it's the proper translation of the unlikely-sounding Tahltan word "Kablona", which is their name for that area (interstingly btw "Spatsizi" which refers to roughly the same region, is Sekani, not Tahltan...."Sacred Headwaters" is a term that's even in use from the Ministry of Forests and other BC govt agencies, though not EMR (Energy, Mins and Resources) I think....Skookum1 (talk) 12:28, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

There is alread a Klappan Coalbed Methane Project article. I added some of the other articles to my watch list and will try to take a look. Good on you Skooks for trying to fix stuff that's messed up, eh. ChildofMidnight (talk) 16:35, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
HAHA, it was a redirect, I wrote it this morning from the headwaters article, but I think I am done for now if you want to work on it. --kelapstick (talk) 16:37, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
I did what I could, working the "scientific research" into prose where appropriate, removing the part that was from NGO websites (which are POV and not reliable sources). Now I just get to wait for the hate mail to come in! Should add the project to WP Energy too.--kelapstick (talk) 17:14, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
There's an extensive and also POV/NGO-written section on Tahltan, which should be an ethnography-only article; I'd thought there was some on Tahltan First Nation, Iskut First Nation and Tahtltn Nation, but not so; the details on Tahltan are quite a bit more than here, but also NGOish in tone.....I tidied up Great Bear Rainforest, including taking out a fee-only reference, and it like other articles needs some kind of "advertising" tag but I don't know the right one to use. I don't think you'll get so much hate mail as chagrin-posts and attempts to further POVize the material....the same should be watched-for from the mining/energy sector too....Skookum1 (talk) 17:29, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
There's huge material on Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition that needs integration/moving to the new article...I'm up to my eyeballs in real-word alligators in the next few days, would either of you please care to do the dirty deed? Not sure what will be left on the Coalition page afterwards, but like I said I'm not sure it should exist at all, as it's too micro-special-interest...(and spammish).Skookum1 (talk) 17:31, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
(after e/c)I posted a note about the split at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Energy since it falls more into their court than mining (also someone there might be able to expand it too). They are both on my watch list so I can keep an eye on it. I will take a look at those other links and see what I can see. Happy editing.--kelapstick (talk) 17:33, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

(outdent)That was easy, all the material was elsewhere covered...it was actually copy/paste.--kelapstick (talk) 17:36, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Speaking about the Spatsizi, one of the associatd articles, maybe Spatsizi River if not Spatsizi Plateau and Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Provincial Park, may have had something on it; or maybe Nass River. This upon remembering that there's no Klappan River article so far, I'll do that when I come back later....Skookum1 (talk) 18:09, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Powering up

Can anyone sort out how my new article Chloride Electrical Storage Company relates to either Exide or Exide Industries? I'm sure it's quite obvious. I came upon this subject matter at Rozalex if that helps. Thanks. You guys are the best. As far as letting you know about the Klappan Coalbed Methane Project article, you're welcome. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:53, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

You know I was thinking last night, with your concerns about el presidente's renewable energy policy etc. Maybe we should be looking at The Wonder Pets, last night I saw them fly to Australia in 45 seconds in a Frisbee powered by a purple highlighter. Hows that for sustainability?--kelapstick (talk) 17:57, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

Granby

There was a large mine south of Nanaimo called the Granby mine (see this list). Must be the same company? --KenWalker | Talk 03:58, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Interesting, I will take a look when I get the chance, thanks.--kelapstick (talk) 04:19, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

FYI

[15] ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:34, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Also, I tried using the cite button, but it doesn't work. The ref one works okay, but that one isn't much help really. Maybe Mr. Softee (MSFT) doesn't allow that kind of thing? Anyway, I tried. Another sign that it's my way or the highway. Bacon mania has gained some supporters. Hope is on the way? ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:08, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
That's too bad, I really like the cite button, but like I said, I use google chrome, I didn't know that about Mitt, but now I do, thanks for the info. Good luck drumming up support for the bacon-nation--kelapstick (talk) 03:55, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Kelapstick

Any interested in digging into this a little? Talk:Newmont Mining Corporation#Batu Hijau.

Thanks bongo, I can take a look at it tomorrow.--kelapstick (talk) 03:20, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Bone the Fish

Is my edit enough? Please help. Kb3777 (talk) 20:51, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

No it isn't. You need to provide Reliable sources to prove that the saying/website is actually notable. --kelapstick (talk) 20:46, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Is this a source.

http://mikehernalsteen.com/blog/social-media/bone-the-fish-the-new-jump-the-shark/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kb3777 (talkcontribs) 21:04, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Bone the Fish II

Since the website is a response to a large corporate entity destroying a well known user community, I find it very questionable that because there isnt an immediate news article regarding this that you feel that this isnt acceptable by wikipedia standards. There is an online petition of 200 former users of JTS's old website that have a call to arms for BTF at the top of the petition, that's how I heard about it, and other BTF members wanted to register this term and the site with wikipedia, which is how I heard that this was in the process of being judged. 68.63.162.166 (talk) 21:10, 3 April 2009 (UTC) J Diggity

Regardless of what 200 registered users wish to do, in order for something to have an article on Wikipedia it has to meat certain criteria, the first of which is notability which states that in order for something to have a Wikipedia article it must be the subject of significant coverage by reliable sources that are independent of the subject.
  1. Blogs typically do not count as reliable sources
  2. Online petitions by registered users of the site are not independent of the subject
Also there is Wikipedia:Notability (web) which outlines specific criteria for web content notability. Note that the meeting the notability guidelines is required for all articles, not just this one.--kelapstick (talk) 21:21, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

So basically you are subject to large media companies like Gemstar to generate "hype" that you use as a criteria for insertion, and if you arent being promoted by them, you are not given recognition for existing. I can see why people feel that Wiki is a biased source for information. 68.63.162.166 (talk) 21:25, 3 April 2009 (UTC) J- Diggity

Reliable sources do not have to be large media companies. WP:RS in a nutshell states:
Articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy.
Nowhere does it state that it has to be a large media company. I have used the Pahrump Valley Gazetter as a source, which can hardly be considered a "large media company".--kelapstick (talk) 21:31, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Great job on the fried clam articles by the way Kelapstick. I enjoyed them and they were well done (no pun intended). I can't wait to see what you do with calamari. ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:18, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Turbaconducken

Am I way ahead of you as usual, or did you already know about [16]? I had to go to your sandbox5. A lot of activity in the playground... ChildofMidnight (talk) 03:45, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Check this out, Old Dutch Foods makes chip flavors unique to Canada. [17] One of them is ketchup and the other is bacon. Anyway, I thought it was interesting. But I'm an Old Dutch fan. As is Mies, Dr. I think. ChildofMidnight (talk) 00:43, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
You don't have ketchup chips here (I don't like them so haven't looked)? Sour Cream and Bacon is good too. Ketchup is my sisters favorite (not necessarily Old Dutch). Actually I don't think you can get Old Dutch east of Manitoba. Which is too bad cause I am from Ontario. We are also having a tough time finding Dill Pickle, and you can't get Kraft dill pickle chip dip in the US either (much to my wife disappointment). But you can get 5 flavours of canned cheese!--kelapstick (talk) 01:53, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that ketchup flavored chips are uncommon in the U.S., but as artisan foods are in I wouldn't be surprised if they exist. I like the Old Dutch Dill Pickle chips. I haven't found any others in that flavor that are as good. Is your sister single?  :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:18, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Lays does a pretty good dill pickle (if you like that sort of thing), but I like most of their chips. I also like their jalapeno, and now I am addicted to their sea salt and vinegar kettle chips. As for my sister, you missed out by a year, but we had turducken at the weding. Can you get Coffee Crisp or Aero there? What about Smarties? The chocolate ones not the candy ones (that I call rockets)? I saw coffee Crisp bars in Virginia City once, should have bought out their entire stock.--kelapstick (talk) 02:50, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
You are a man of fascinating culinary interests. What can I say? The name brand dill pickle chips don't compare with Old Dutch. I think it's the extra artificial flavoring they use and that they're from the land of cookie salad and hotdish. I like a nice chocolate chip cookie, although there are some gourmet cookies that are good too (I have a thing for waffelten, but as an American I have to say that Oreos aren't bad). I'm not sure I've ever ever had chocolate smarties. Tom's makes the best salt and vinegar chips, but I'm not sure you can handle them... When are you making clams casino and if things go according to plan we will soon need a photo for Turbaconducken. I'm counting on you and Mies, Dr. Do you want to draw straws? I trust you had a good weekend. Back to "work", as you like to call it.  :) ChildofMidnight (talk) 05:11, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Old Dutch are by far better than most other name brand (isn't that Drmies' nickname too?) Not sure if I will be making clams casino, the seafood selection here is lacking. But if I ever see them on a menu I will order them. Turbaconducken sounds great, I can't wait to try it. Back to "work" tomorrow, if it weren't for work when would I have time to edit Wikipedia? As right now I am tied up watching Blue's Clues, it's a riviting episode, Magenta is coming over and Steve is actually a clue.--kelapstick (talk) 14:36, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Annaconda mine

Visiting the Annaconda mine were you? This layman would like to suggest that the photo description explain why it looks like a lake. Cheerios. ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:12, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Since I can see the waste rock pile from my back yard it wasn't a long trip...But a good point, I uploaded it at home in a hurry, so I could modify it when I got here and had more time (and a mouse and regular keyboard). I have been thinking of launching my kayak in it, most water around here.
Yes, indeed. It looks pristine and lovely. Another argument in favor of open pit mining to be sure. Do most open pit mines fill up with water once they stop pumping it out? Also, are you going to add your name to this list [18]? ChildofMidnight (talk) 18:34, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I would say that almost all mines (both underground and open pit) will flood when they stop pumping, but I suppose it depends on if it is excavated below the water table, which most will be. At least that is my understanding, any mining people/hydro-geology people who watch this page are welcome to correct me. Apparently you can drink the water out of the Anaconda Pit, but I wouldn't. The county commissioner who owns Weed Heights used to display how clean it was by doing that, he also ate the fish that are stocked in there. Again...I wouldn't do it.--kelapstick (talk) 18:42, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Interesting. I guess the photo notes and caption should say it's no longer an active mine has been allowed to flood (fill with water?)? Would that be fair wording Mr. Geologist? ChildofMidnight (talk) 19:29, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Ever consider swimming in Berkeley Pit? Drmies (talk) 03:28, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Christian de Metter‎

Hi! I was just thinking we ought to swap the redirect and the article -- his name is probably "de Metter" with a small D. Just thought I should let you know, rather than swooping in and confusing matters. Cheers, Kafka Liz (talk) 23:27, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

I was thinking that too, but fr:Christian De Metter has a capitalized D...the notes and references with a small "d" but the website (not really a reliable source) uses capital...but it probably is lowercase, anyway by all means! --kelapstick (talk) 23:29, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I should have checked those first! I guess we should leave it as is, then, since all the available evidence supports the capital D. It looks strange to me, but I suppose he's entitled to spell his name however he chooses. Thanks for cleaning up the article. :) Kafka Liz (talk) 23:35, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
I also did a quick google search and it was all over the map, I don't know if anyone knows how to spell his name!--kelapstick (talk) 23:37, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Surprisingly enough, he has a Library of Congress entry (!), which uses the small "d". I say we follow that. I'm sure the article writer will let us know if it's a problem. Kafka Liz (talk) 23:41, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan.--kelapstick (talk) 23:47, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Canadians

Thisiswhyyourefat.com is up and all ready for a DYK hook and categorization. :) I hope you know I was kidding with my "He's from Canada" comment. I thought it was a funnily random non sequitir. Cheerios. ChildofMidnight (talk) 01:51, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

I really don't know what you are talking about....I just got back from UNR and booked a trip to San Diego for this weekend, haven't had a chance to look around, anyway I am off, but will see if I can make sense of things in the morning. Also will hook up a that site, there should be lots of good material there.--kelapstick (talk) 07:33, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

...that in the first two months after its creation thisiswhyyourefat.com received 10 million page views for its photographs of dishes like the "Homewrecker" and "30,000 Calorie Sandwich"?--kelapstick (talk) 16:51, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

I tweaked it a bit. See if you like. I tried to add a bit more drama and gravitas. My prior comment was in regards to the stew v. soup dilemna. No soup for you. Have a great trip this weekend. I hear the zoo is nice and they must have some nice beaches down there. Have fun. ChildofMidnight (talk) 17:26, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
HAHA, I missed the F&D comment, didn't have it on my watch list. The hook looks good, We are going to Legoland, maybe the zoo next time, we were going to stay on the beach in Oceanside, but decided on an off-beach hotel in Carlsbad.--kelapstick (talk) 17:31, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
How are the smokin bacon chips from Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods? Did you put the hook up at DYK or do you want me to? Your weekend plans sound great. I think Zoos are kind of mean anyway. Have fun. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:34, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Smokey bacon are pretty good, don't really taste like bacon though, what I love are Hickory Sticks, which apparently doesn't have an article, which I am going to have to remedy. My wife dislikes seeing polar bears in zoos, cause she has seen a lot of them in the wild, and yells "He doesn't want a pumpkin, he wants a seal!" at the zookeepers. You better put up that hook, I am finally seeing some headway in my workload here but won't be able to be active for a while.--kelapstick (talk) 22:38, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
See you on the other side. Have a great time. ChildofMidnight (talk) 22:58, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of El Salvador mine

A tag has been placed on El Salvador mine requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Hoist (mining))

Hello

On Hoist (mining) I've seen you are looking für pictures for this article. I've currently drawn some of these for german WP. Take a look at these here and here. Maybe they are useful to you. I'm not familiar to the technical term in english, so I wouldn't do it myself

Those look great! I will add them, I should be able to work out the translation. Thanks!--kelapstick (talk) 18:52, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

It sound familiar, but I can't really remember it. Does it have a happy ending? ChildofMidnight (talk) 02:17, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks!

My next project is El Teniente...there was a claim about 2400 km of underground galleries, I didn't buy it, the math just didn't work, 60 metres a day is huge (further explanation on the talk page), but I would like an explanation about the worlds biggest copper mine.--kelapstick (talk) 13:54, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Bacon mania (Bacon article)

Within the last few minutes I put on the talk page to indent this section, I see you have just done it! SimonTrew (talk) 17:13, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah it was a mistake by me, it originally was indented, when I changed the name from "recent bacon enthusiasm" (or something) to bacon mania and put the "main article" template there I reduced it to three = (I think I was doubting the American-centricity of the fad, which it appears to be), I noticed the mistake but never got around to fixing it, thanks for reminding me.--kelapstick (talk) 17:17, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
No worries, I just thought perhaps after editing the talk page I had been mistaken, then when checking the article history realised you had changed it already. Wow, quick! SimonTrew (talk) 17:21, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
The Bacon Cabal does what it can! Cheers--kelapstick (talk) 17:22, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Rio Tinto Group spelling

Hi, I noticed you changed some spelling in Rio Tinto Group from American English to British English. I know British English is the proper version to use in this article, but as an American myself and avowed American speaker and writer, I have trouble catching all the instances of "hey, the Brits spell it differently!" (You have no idea how hard it was for me just to stick that extra "i" in aluminium over and over again.) Since you seem to know your way around the stray vowels the British seem to prefer, would you mind helping me out? I'm trying to get this to FA status and this seems like one of those things the reviewers will be sticklers on. Thanks! Bantman (talk) 17:48, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

No problem, it is funny being a Canadian living in the United States with these (and the word cheque) spelling differences, and having computer spell checks tell me I spell colour et. al. incorrectly...I saw your request on WP:MINING peer review, I will take a look at it after I get finished with this project I am on now, just caught that one, and I did a search for "our" to see of there were any other instances (there weren't), so you are covered in that regard...glad to help!--kelapstick (talk) 17:54, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I appreciate the help.Bantman (talk) 21:32, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Moose A. Moose

A little over 1100 words now, and I think I squeezed all of the blood out of this turnip... Drmies (talk) 16:09, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

BTW, I understand fun and family obligations and all, but leaving for those kinds of things in the middle of such an important matter? Tsk tsk... have fun! Drmies (talk) 16:10, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
It's over 1500 characters now, good for a DYK. Can you do that? Legoland was great, beach day tomorrow. Than the long trek back to the desert Tuesday (unless we stay an extra day).--kelapstick (talk) 23:51, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Did you know...that Moose A. Moose is not only a fictional cartoon moose hosting TV shows on television station Noggin, but also an "on-air teacher" embodying the concept of "connected learning"?
BTW, can you figure out what's wrong with the next-to-last reference, those square brackets around the link and title? And how does one go about adding a picture of the moose to the article and the DYK? Drmies (talk) 03:49, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Ice cream!

You're looking for casein-free ice cream. (Is this out of concern over effects on autism? see Casein#Opioid) I can't find much, except for don't eat it...(ice cream, that is) Can you make ice cream using soy milk? Here's an article for strawberry tofu ice cream... And here's the search that gives lots of results, though it's hard to figure out the quality of the links and the recipes. Good luck! Drmies (talk) 18:31, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, GF-CF stuff is tough to find. I think I found a good recipe for sorbet, which should be close, thanks!.--kelapstick (talk) 23:55, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
I've made rosemary sorbet--delicious. Are you all having fun at Legoland yet? Were there any egg hunts happening? We had a three-year old on a sugar rush and a three-month old who decided she couldn't look at one more strange face again (at the neighbor's Easter party...). So it was fun! And now it's time for a beer. Seen the Moose article? Later! Drmies (talk) 02:50, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, missed your other message. Drmies (talk) 02:51, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Condensing all threads here...

Did you know...that Moose A. Moose a fictional cartoon moose that hosts TV shows on television station Noggin, and acts as an "on-air teacher" embodying the concept of "connected learning"?
Alt hook, but looks good. No egg hunts at legoland, but it was fun. The little guy was a little too short for most rides (34 inch minumum), but we still enjoyed it. The aquarium wasn't that great, but it was alright. Going to the beach today. Nice work moose hunting.--kelapstick (talk) 15:04, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
And the problem with the ref was you had hit enter in the title so it was on two lines, not sure why that messes it up but it does.--kelapstick (talk) 15:06, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

I forgot that if you want to add an image you add |image=blah.jpg--kelapstick (talk) 02:44, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

  • Yeah, but where do I get an image that's free to use, or fair to use? I've been uploading album covers, but this must be a different thing, with a licensed cartoon character... Drmies (talk) 03:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
I think it would have to be fair use, but I have never uploaded a fair use image, and Wikipedia does not allow fair use images on the main page either.--kelapstick (talk) 05:40, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
