The Barnstar of Diligence
I hereby award this Barnstar to La Pianista for her continuing diligent and professional work on the Motto of the Day page, including her inciteful comments, clever suggestions and useful research. Keep up the good work! Nutiketaiel (talk) 19:54, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I suppose technically I should be giving you the MotD award, but I don't really like it, so I figured this one fits too. Seriously, you're doing a great job over there. Incidentally, I really like your user page, too. If I weren't allready here to give you a Barnstar for something else, I'd give you one for having such a well designed userpage. In fact, I think I will. Nutiketaiel (talk) 19:54, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

The Excellent Userpage Award

Yes, it is a copypaste of the wording from yours...but that's only because I couldn't think of one any better. Besides, it seems as if you've been there for a much longer time than I have. :D
One question, though: what is the story behind your name? It is very unusual. —La Pianista (TCS) 00:42, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the Barnstar!  :-) "Nutiket" is a Leni Lenape word meaning "Guardian." I learned it when I was in the Order of the Arrow, a sub-sect of the Boy Scouts of America and loved the sound of it. The "Aiel" are a nation of people from Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, my favorite books. I've been using the same handle in various online communities since I was a teenager; it has personal meaning for me, but is unusual enough that I have never found it to be taken by someone else. Most people just abbreviate it to "Nuti" when referring to me, though.  :-) Nutiketaiel (talk) 12:44, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

I was blocked and left for dead. A good samaritan unblocked me. The wisdom of this unblocked has been proven with over a year of good edits since the unblock. Many administrators refuse to unblock. I am an example of the harm of refusing unblock. It is permanent loss of information from WP.

Hello! Chergles (talk) 20:19, 14 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hello to you too!
Gee, thanks for the info...but what does your message refer to? —La Pianista (TCS) 00:53, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

You had a discussion with Ryulong. He wrongly blocked me indefinitely. It had to do with someone's legal threat. I said that accusations of legal threats should specify the lefal threat and quote the sentence. Ryulong said that any defense of that person means you are a sock. However, that was over a year ago. Chergles (talk) 00:12, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, yes. Although I do understand the grounds for his block, I agree that it was a bit too harsh and sudden. I'm glad that you (and her) were unblocked to continue editing.
BTW, what was the unblock for? (explanation came after edit conflict, thank you.) :) —La Pianista (TCS) 00:13, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Help with userpage project

edit

{{helpme}} I am currently designing a userpage for one of our newest users, Spittlespat, who has asked me to do so. But I am having trouble with the bluelinks in the leftside body of text. I am not familiar with the coding - it is just a copy-paste of someone else's userspace.

It can be found in my alternative sandbox, User:La Pianista/sandbox 2. —La Pianista (TCS) 18:06, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

In firefox, the links still don't work, and the userboxen are underneath the transparent thingy, so they look kind of shadowy. Chamal talk work 00:28, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh wait, it lloks like the userboxen are also semi-transparent, and not underneath that thingy. Did you make it happen, or is something wrong with it? Doesn't look bad though, on second thought :) Chamal talk work 00:31, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that was intentional. :) But I guess I'll leave it be - for now, I'll focus on figuring out how to put the navigation table at the top of that...and getting the subpages to match that motif.La Pianista (TCS) 00:46, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rebel Queen?

edit

I saw these edits and I wondered... do you know what happened? Usually someone should just get a warning for not editing, and just talking on Wikipedia, not their page deleted and the user blocked... ? ~ Bella Swan? 22:00, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I thought that, too. Then I posted a message at the blocking admin's page, here. His response can be found under that. —La Pianista (TCS) 22:23, 15 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
It's not really required to issue a warning before blocking, per WP:BLOCK though. Since she has been editing for a few months, I guess the admin expected her to know the policy by now. I agree that it was harsh, but when looking at her edit count of <100 mainspace edits and >350 userspace edits, I guess it would look like she was being disruptive to someone who hasn't met her before... Or is it just that I don't want to blame anyone? I don't know :) Chamal talk work 00:23, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps. Sometimes I fear you may be too nice, Chamal. :D :D :D —La Pianista (TCS) 00:25, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, now that I'm reading this, I remember this happeneing on one other occation. It's a really ineffective rule, I think I'm gonna propose something to be changed about it. ~ Bella Swan? 21:12, 16 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Agreed...it seems to be a sort of controversial block Ryulong made. Maybe some sort of gentle warning for these sorts of situations would be appropriate? As Mango said on Ryuu's talkpage, she's been pretty productive. IceUnshattered [ t ] 00:04, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've started a conversation about it at the Help Desk, and hopefully we can find a way to fix this. The situation is this: Ruylong did nothing *specifically* wrong in blocking her, it was a quite bit harsh, but acceptable since there is no *exact* policy on the subject. This policy is somewhat applicable, but the problem is that it's vauge and open to interpertaion by the admin, so you can't outright say the admin was wrong in doing what he did. She is unblocked now and can come back, so I figured that we'll need to do something to make sure this sort of thing doesn't happen again. The problem is, we can't figure out what. Feel free to contribute an ideas. ~ Bella Swan? 00:21, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Bella, for your pursuits. I've read the discussion and found it to be very enlightening. —La Pianista (TCS) 04:17, 17 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey Ed17 I should add you to my friend's list!--Spittlespat! ǀ TCS 23:11, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
(e/c)Well, like my piano teacher tells me, "Always take quality over quantity." It's cliché, but it makes a lot of sense when he says it. :)
I would rather you make one good edit than a dozen mediocre ones. But that's not to say that you are editing badly - I just thought that you could divide your time better, lending more to editing in mainspace/vandal fighting/etc.
And...hey, instead of asking me to change your number, why don't you make me do it? Start editing differently, and follow the advice we give you. That way, the number change will have merit. ;D
(after e/c). BTW is iSlang for "by the way." And...btw...perhaps I should called myself - La Gnomista? —La Pianista (TCS) 23:13, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
And, actually, it's Blooded Edge and me. *puts on English professor tone* The phrase "Blooded Edge and me" applies as a direct object - "You" is the subject of the sentence. Since the subject of the sentence is the one carrying out the action upon the direct object(s), the pronoun should be in the objective form. —La Pianista (TCS) 23:15, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
(...doubleTRIPLE e/c, so I'm starting over. =])...Yes, you should have called yourself "Gnomista"...except that it is a contradiction! "Gnomista" is not a word...but if you are a gnome, real words should comprise your username, right? :)
Actually, I got through all of my English classes without knowing what a verb, adjective, subject, object, and direct object mean... And I'm serious.Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 23:19, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

This feels like a blooody murder episode! (also just from talking in this discussion I've gotten 4 edit conflicts!--Spittlespat! ǀ TCS 23:21, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

(Ed's dent)(Yet another e/c - my talk page has never before been so busy! *ego inflates*) Hmph. I do believe the Gnome Syndrome is contagious...gnome. :D :D :D

No, Spittle, I don't feel it would be ethical to change your number until I've waited about a month or so to see if you've changed your editing habits. It may not be the nicest thing to do, but it's what I'm most comfortable with. :)

(e/c × 2) And your comment, Spittle, just caused me to run into another one. :) —La Pianista (TCS) 23:23, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and just saw your comment about grammar, Ed (it was lost in the conflicts): an adjective describes a noun/pronoun/noun phrase/prepositional phrase only. Adverbs are for all the rest. —La Pianista (TCS) 23:25, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

In this special grammar episode of Bloody murder, the three friends start arguring! Spittlespat:Well I have better grammar than all of you it's just I have um... I have um... short term memory loss that's why it seems that I have bad grammar!(also so far I have 7 edit conflicts from thsi discussion, wait here comes another one! make that 8 edit conflicts!)--Spittlespat! ǀ TCS 23:26, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

(e/c x 10) I think this is a compound-complex sentece is, is is this, I have 2 eyes, but the monster, who was ugly, had one eye. like that?--Spittlespat! ǀ TCS 23:38, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

am I right?--Spittlespat! ǀ TCS 23:40, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

(e/c × the number of red hairs on my head) Nope, far off. A compound sentence is two sentences combined:
I do not like Ed + Ed does not like me = I do not like Ed, and Ed does not like me.
...plus a subordinate clause put in to boot:
Since he left me to die + I do not like Ed, and Ed does not like me = Since he left me to die, I do not like Ed, and Ed does not like me.
Voilá!La Pianista (TCS) 23:43, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
hey smarty pants, but is a conjuction look it up in your grammar book! So looks like I'm right, it's basically saying I have 2 eyes and the monster, who was ugly had one.
Wait...the "subordinate clause" is "I do not like Ed", right?Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 23:46, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Misunderstood Spittle's comment. —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 23:47, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
You know, I really don't like that sentence... :) —Ed 17 for President Vote for Ed 23:48, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
(e/c)? (at Spittle's comment)
No, the subordinate clause is "Since he left me to die." It cannot stand by itself as a sentence because of the conjunction "Since" in front of it. Thus, it is subordinate to the rest of the sentence.
(after e/c) Oh, really? Then how about this:
Since he said I was evil, I really don't like Ed, and he really doesn't like me. :D :D :D —La Pianista (TCS) 23:50, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
(e/c x 11) hey yous this is a really easy question but where is the complement in this sentence, The man read a long book and then went to his cozy bed but before he did that he jumped into his pajamas first!!--Spittlespat! ǀ TCS 23:51, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
