1903 in organized crime

Hi, as your more familiar with the subject, and have better access to the sources, can you confirm William J. Flynn is the relevant person at 1903 in organized crime. If so could you link to that article (I removed the previous redlink, as it was likely wrong). It now seems extremely likely it must be the same person, unless there is an incredible coincidence (as this person wrote books on the Black Hand, and later headed the entire agency). But, I personally don't know, and therefore can't make the change myself. It looks to me like the images are in the public domain. Official police mugshots are considered part of the public record, and as such are not eligable for copyright in the United States. I don't know, but I want to agree about what to do rather than fight about it, thats for sure! I am pretty open minded, and I am confident that a few of the redlinks (possibly even most of them) are fictional, but undoubtably some of them are real... Researching gangs, secret societies, cults and fraternal organisations has been an interest of mine for decades, and 'd like to see a good structure put in place to help articles to grow.

JRN Copyright

Hi, I don't know if this has been brought to your attention but some material from Jay Robert Nash's works were copied directly into WP see : Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2006-04-24/Jay Robert Nash. I have seen that you've used some of his material for reference in WP, and since his books aren't accurate, it would be nice to double check your entries so that WP doesn't get sued about fake entries that were entered by users. In no way am I accusing you, if this doesn't touch you in any way please forget I ever mentioned this or help me try to erase fake entries and copyright edits. Lincher 18:12, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

I didn't see any plagiarism at all nor do I accuse you of any though for the matter that JRN is about to sue WP for copying false entries that were, hence taken from his books. So, we should thus monitor edits made by other organized crime biographers if they don't add fake entries or things like that. Accardi's Date of Death?

Hey Max, I did some wikifying and copyediting on an article you created, Settimo Accardi. While I was at it, I noticed that the article is in the category "1963 deaths". However, according to the article itself, Accardi was sentenced to prison in 1964, and no date of death is mentioned. There must be a mistake somewhere, but I can't tell where; I was unable to hunt up a date of death for him from Google. Considering that he was born in 1902, I'm assuming that he must be dead by now, but I can't even confirm that. First of all I must commend you on writing such a fine & completely encyclopedic article. Also I think you have handled the situation fine so far. I have now tagged Nashville Franklin Leslie for speedy deletion for being a duplicate & a copyvio. About User:OBrienMadHouse we just watch him for now as you have appropriately warned him. If he continues to add copyrighted text or recreate the article, we can report him to an admin. But I have a question: What is the real name of this outlaw? I believe his full name was Nashville Franklin (or Franklyn) Leslie however he most often went under Frank Leslie. I would have had Franklin Leslie as a redirect to Nashville Franklin, however I would assume the article wouldn't be able to be moved as obviously the present article is already taken by the duplicate article. Basically, a tag like {{WPMILHIST Middle Ages task force}} is replaced by adding a line to the {{WPMILHIST}} call: |Middle-Ages-task-force=yes. I wish I had seen this earlier. The article read that Luciano had Maranzano killed as a favor to Lepke! Whaaaaa? That is contrary to everything I've read. He did it to consolidate his own power. I agree. I hesitate to read the Lansky article for that reason. I suspect it will hew closely to Messick's book, which was completely discredited by Lacey and others. The problem with such major inaccuracies is that they are picked up by google, which usually lists Wiki as its first reference in searches, as well as answers.com. In this case I cant honestly say what the copyright implications are of using a "boston police" source picture that isnt a mug shot, but since the picture clearly isnt from whitey world either, he certainly isnt the owner. Actually I would encourage creating the project - the guideline is if you get 5 or more interested, a project could work. It usally depends on what purpose. If it's a listing of related articles simply relating to British crime in general, then it would be usally listed on the project's front page either as an example for prospective members or as an internal resource (or to highlight featured articles).

Of course, if you'd like to make a listing of articles in need of catagorization, expansion, etc., it could go into a seperate section. This is certainly an issue which need to be resoved before any plans for rewrite are possible (otherwise the page will do doubt be a target for edit wars). Although PassionoftheDamon does made some good points, the sources I have (Sifakis, Nash, and Kelly) all state that the National Crime Syndicate and "The Commission" are seperate entities altogether. While I am aware, at least to some extent, of Wikipedia's disagreements with Mr. Nash, the articles I have contributed were based on numerous sources (with Nash's work used only as a secondary resource). From what I do know, there seems to be a concern over Nash's work containing exaggerated accounts and non-existant criminals. I would readily agree that while the rational that my contributions were based solely on Nash's work would be adequate case for deletion. However, I believe I have provided sufficient sources in proving both notability and existence of said individuals. However, would it not have been easier simply to remove Nash as a reference from the deleted articles ?

In addition, I should point out that the article North Side Gang was complied by sources completely separate to Nash's Encyclopedia of World Crime (which I partially used to write the "Origin" section). MadMax 17:20, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay, apparently this isn't the first time we've had problems with Nash, and apparently people forgot.

As made clear here and especially here, Nash is not a reliable source. Especially note the part that about how "has repeatedly said that his books are seeded with misinformation, including incorrect facts and nonexistent people, so as to catch those who "steal" from his work". Also note:

"Jimmy Wales commented that he would be happy to remove any instances of copying if pointed out, but called Nash's books unfit as sources for Wikipedia regardless of any legal issues. "Nash's work should not be relied upon," Wales concluded, on the grounds that the deliberate insertion of errors "makes it unsuitable as a reference anyway."

You may re-create any and all articles that can be made wholly Nash-free. However, any data which is Nash-based must be expunged. DS 17:22, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

While I can certainly understand Wikipedia's position, the problem is none of these deleted articles were based entirely on Nash's work. Nash's Encyclopeia of World Crime and Encyclopedia of Organized Crime were used as an additional point of reference (which was one of the purposes of the missing topic lists). Any rewriting of any of these articles would only contain the same information. Nash's work in the Encyclopedia of World Crime series alone is in itself a compilation of others authors work.

Mock Duck for example, which was also mentioned on the talk page, was largely based on Carlo Devito's Encyclopedia of International Organized Crime (ISBN 0-8160-4848-7) and its Find-A-Grave entry. As this is the case with 90% of these articles, I really don't see why simply removng Nash as a reference (provided there were other relable references listed in the first place). If there were none, a simple verification tag could have been placed and, if none were listed after a time, then deleted however feasible this might have been. MadMax 16:27, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

He is quite obsessive about deleting "copyrighted" content from boston mob personality pages. He appears to be somehow connected to Howie Carr, and comes back on new IPs every few months. We do not know which of Nash's books, if any, can be considered wholly reliable. You've already discovered two of his hoaxes; how many more are hidden within? Is there a hoax in every book, perhaps? He fills his material with copyright traps, and is litigious about it. As such, we cannot take the risk.

No, I wasn't aware of an article covering the Commission (as per the The Commission disambiguation page previously pointing to the National Crime Syndicate [4]). I am concerned that there seems to be a more frequent use of the Commission and the National Crime Syndicate. As far as I know the "Commission" was a loose regulatory body for the Five Families whereas the National Crime Syndicate was an Italian/Jewish dominated organization headed by Luciano and Lansky (although the extent of the organization's power in the underworld is debatable).
