Foreign language books
editI didn't remove the original German book titles at Walther von Brauchitsch on purpose; Dapi89 neglected to add the book sources of his Blitzkrieg addition and so I had to go back in the article's history and find them. This meant a lot of the other books were removed which I had to add back one by one, therefore the German titles were missing. Jonas Vinther (speak to me!) 14:35, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
Happy First Edit Day
editBattle of Neerwinden GA review
editI edited Battle of Neerwinden (1793) to address your concerns about mixing up Dutch/Holland/Netherlands. Coalition and Austro-Dutch were used instead of Austrian, except where the troops were strictly Austrian (ex: "Austrian cavalry" - the Coalition army had no Dutch cavalry units). I used Dutch or Dutch Republic except in cases where the word Holland was explicitly used (ex: Army of Holland and Hollands Diep). The introduction is changed as well as parts of the narrative. I see that the Template:Convert has "sp=us" parameter, but it seems reasonable to use European spellings (ex: kilometres) for European battle articles unless you think it is not appropriate. Please let me know if there is anything more that I can do. Thanks. Djmaschek (talk) 02:20, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

Marseille had a brother?
editI doubt Marseille had a brother from the Siegfried-Charlotte marriage. His mother may have had a child with Reuter, her second marriage, making a step-brother. I know of no such person. I don't think she would have been too old anyway, so its not impossible. The family plot says her second husband was younger, born on 26 March 1893 (died 1961) and she was born in 1889 dying a year later 13 November 1962. It also lists one Gertrud Reimer. She died in 1975 and was born in the late 1800s. Probably a sister of the mother or step-father, and likely an aunt and not a sibling. No evidence of a brother. Josef Jacobs
editHello
I notice you just fixed some information that was added to the Josef Jacobs article; It was put there by a new contributor and I've requested him (/or her?) for the source of it. There's nothing about him having the House Order of Hohenzollern at the aerodrome website page (in the external links) just the Iron Cross and the Blue Max. Do you know at all? Do you recognize that medal he is wearing in the photograph? I've had a look (here) at the Prussian orders and medals (I'm assuming he flew for Prussia) but can't place it. Regards, Xyl 54 (talk) 22:12, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
Do you have any information about him being shot down on 27 September 1944? Dapi89 (talk) 20:58, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Münchberg
editSorry, I had to intervene again. The losses given by Caldwell are beyond belief. On 8 August the Germans lost 22-23 the British 16-4 destroyed/damaged. I have added in two more likely candidates—Hurricanes from another Squadron that were lost at roughly that time. Dapi89 (talk) 18:20, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yes the time issue has been taken into account. Even the one hour difference in CET/GMT can not account for the three hour gap in each case. Dapi89 (talk) 17:58, 14 January 2015 (UTC)
Josef Jacobs, again
editThanks for replying to my post earlier. You're probably right about that being the HOH in the picture; I was thrown by the ribbon, and because I thought the medal had crossed swords behind the cross. But it makes less sense that it would be something completely different that no-one has mentioned anywhere. Anyway, thanks for looking into it. Xyl 54 (talk) 22:38, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

262
editPeltz was fearful that his bomber force would be disbanded after Steinbock. If he could gain control over the 262 units he maintained his Korps, command and influence. He knew Göring was desperate to impress Hitler and regain favour and the Me 262 as an untouchable fighter-bomber would give him, and thus Göring, a certain amount of breathing space. Because at that time the complaints about Göring were escalating. Above all Peltz was desperate to keep his Korps together after the mauling over England. His logic was quite simple. He had burned out his quota of aircraft but he still had a sizeable group of training blind-weather flying pilots that would be sitting idle. Hitler's question to Göring and Willy Messerschmitt in November 1943 over the question of bombing-carrying jets also helped put the nail in the coffin for Galland's ideas. Peltz knew all of this. So he did a U-turn for entirely self-interests. Dapi89 (talk) 15:22, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

- Hope you don't mind me butting in, but the photo was apparently taken by a John Gutmann, who died in 1998. Assuming that the photo was published before 1978, it could be copyrighted until 2030 if the term was extended. If it was not published until after 1978, the 70-year PMA term would kick in, meaning 2068. It would probably be very difficult to prove whether or not Gutmann got the extension for the photo. The UofA site that's hosting the collection might have more details on the status of the photos, but it's blocked for some reason on the computer I'm using right now, so I can't check. editI noticed Wikipedia has a lot of articles about Luftwaffe aces from World War II, which got me thinking: should an article named something like "List of the most successful fighter pilots in history" be created? What's your take on this? Cheers, Jonas Vinther • (speak to me!) 22:53, 21 March 2015 (UTC)
- I did not see the template you linked at my talk page, but after seeing that, I suspect an actual list of the most successful fight pilots in history would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. Cheers, Jonas Vinther • (speak to me!) 22:18, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Rewriting an article in your sandbox
editBarbarossa is not the most ideal example in this argument, but I would never rewrite an article which is of top-importance or extremely controversial, like Nazi Germany or Adolf Hitler. That being said, it should always be encouraged to rewrite low-class articles in your sandbox. Why? Because some editors has the articles on their watch list would be hugely spammed with notifications if you were to improve it "out in the open". If any serious changes have been made during an improvement in ones sandbox and disputed on the talk page, it would be generate more attention to the article which most likely would lead to a stronger consensus on the articles context. Also, if an article, regardless of it's importance, is in a horrible state, it would strongly discouraged more serious/active editors to put time and effort into it, even when assuming good faith. In this particular argument, Barbarossa is a good example as my improvement has made other more serious/active editors jump in with copy edits, thoughts for improvement and other changes in the face of the GA-nomination, kind of like you did by coming to my talk page with a message regarding the variety of sources used. Obviously and understandably, all editors have their own way of editing and making a difference on Wikipedia, but I think you, being a much more experienced editor, would agree on some of these points. What I'm essentially saying is I think it should encouraged to rewrite articles in your sandbox rather then discouraged, with regard to exceptions like religion, politics or the two I mentioned in the beginning. Hello from the team at Featured article review!
editWe are preparing to take a closer look at Featured articles promoted in 2004–2010 that may need a review. We started with a script-compiled list of older FAs that have not had a recent formal review. The next step is to prune the list by removing articles that are still actively maintained, up-to-date, and believed to meet current standards. We know that many of you personally maintain articles that you nominated, so we'd appreciate your help in winnowing the list where appropriate.
Please take a look at the sandbox list, check over the FAs listed by your name, and indicate on the sandbox talk page your assessment of their current status. Likewise, if you have taken on the maintenance of any listed FAs that were originally nominated by a departed editor, please indicate their status. BLPs should be given especially careful consideration.
Thanks for your help! Maralia (talk) 19:43, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

editThere are discussions as to changing the title names of Schutzstaffel (SS), Sturmabteilung (SA) and SS-Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA) which you may be interested in commenting on given your interest in Nazi Germany and World War II (Europe) articles in writing/editing. Award season
editI have no objection to mention that the decoration was given. I see no value whatever, on individuals' pages, of mentioning the history or the status of the decoration, which is not about the awarded individual but about the decoration. That information, as I've already said, belongs on the page for the decoration. If it's not there, add it. I don't need you telling me what to keep. Sourced trivia is still only trivia. Sourced cruft is still cruft. TREKphiler any time you're ready, Uhura 19:10, 11 June 2015 (UTC)

He likely was shot down by a Spitfire belonging to No. 401 Squadron. They were based at B-88, near Heesch. They took off for a patrol on 25 December and encountered two Bf 109s from Stab (supposedly) JG 77 near Essen. Both were claimed shot down. You'll have to wait a little longer for the name of the pilots. Dapi89 (talk) 17:27, 18 August 2015 (UTC)
- Spitfire Aces of Northwest Europe 1944-45 page 66 describes 401 destroying two Bf 109s from stab/JG 77. Also Werner Gerbig Six Months to Oblivion (p. 60) describes 401 patrolling over Duisburg and engaging enemy aircraft. It is the best I can do now. Dapi89 (talk) 19:12, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
- Sorry, Spitfire aces (p. 66) Mentions Flying Officer John MacKay shot one of them down which he said was over Duisberg. It was likely nearby. Dapi89 (talk) 19:20, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Werner Baumbach.jpg
editThanks for uploading File:Werner Baumbach.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Stefan2 (talk) 16:10, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
