Your GA nomination of Melchie Dumornay
The article Melchie Dumornay you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Melchie Dumornay for reasons why the nomination failed. If or when these points have been taken care of, you may apply for a new nomination of the article. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Mike Christie -- Mike Christie (talk) 20:41, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Mike Christie Hello! I've got no problems at all with your decision: I actually thank you for the advice you gave me, especially as a non-native English speaker! : )
- I'll reply to the observations you made in your review real quick:
- - Right, I'll remove the image from the article soon. Just to be sure, can an "image-less" article still be eligible for GA status, once it's been improved enough?
- Yes, the requirement is for images where possible. If nothing is available free, and nothing can be justified for fair use, that's OK. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:07, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- - Stuff is the main New Zealand news media website, so it should be a pretty reliable source, indeed; on the other hand, PiedsCarrés-Féminin was cited on the player's fr.wiki page, likely since it covers women's football extensively, but I admit that I don't even know if it's an officially registered portal...
- Stuff sounds like it's reliable, I agree. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:07, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- - So, does each match included in the "International goals" section need at least one citation?
- You can add a single source to a reliable statistics website if you can find one that covers all the goals. Some editors add a "source" column, and then put the source footnote in that column for each row. It doesn't matter how you do it so long as everything in the article has a source. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:07, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- - You're definitely right about the first two spot-checks: I'll try to search for more detailed match reports. Would portals like Soccerway or the federation's website still count towards the criteria?
- - I thought the third spot-check was actually covered by that Goal article... I relied on this particular snippet, which likely refers to the violent escalation of the protests in Haiti throughout 2019:
- "'I think what made the difference was that we didn't stop taking news from her, information from Haiti, I was even supposed to go and meet her and her family and other players in Haiti, but I couldn't because of the situation there in 2019,' [Reims' head coach Amandine] Miquel explains."
- I didn't spot that! However, I don't think it resolves the issue, because that's Reims saying they stayed in contact despite the crisis -- it doesn't say the crisis was a reason why Reims and Lyons were *not* able to sign her, which is what it was citing. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:07, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- - I didn't find any other useful links at first: however, I've just made another research, and thankfully, I've found out about several articles on Dumornay by The Haitian Times, including this interview from 2020. They might be exactly what we were looking for!
- Once again, thank you for your help. Oltrepier (talk) 11:52, 29 April 2023 (UTC)
- Glad to hear you have more sources. It sounds like there are going to be plenty more sources about her over the next year or two, so you should be able to keep expanding the article. I'm glad the review was helpful! Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 12:07, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

- @DoubleGrazing Thank you for taking the time to review it.
- On second thought, I also think the sources of information about the player are still too skeletal to make an acceptable article out of them (I didn't have a good grasp of WP:GNG when I first started working on this page), so I wanted to withdraw the draft and move it to my own userspace, so I can still save it for the future months. Am I allowed to do it? Oltrepier (talk) 09:38, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- Drafts are kept for 6 months from the last human edit, so you have plenty of time to work on it (and if you keep working on it every now and then, the time countdown keeps resetting, so the draft will be kept more or less indefinitely!). Moving it to your user space makes no difference in this regard, and in any case it not advisable. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:45, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Getting hooked as a newer editor
I found your comments on Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/2023-08-15/Special report really interesting and thought I'd drop you a line. I'm one of those sorts of liminal-space editors, someone from a cohort in the last few years who managed to make the jump to being seen/treated as an "experienced editor" fairly quickly but doesn't have the institutional memory of precursors. I think you're very right about the productivity of DYK/GAN and the...unproductivity of AfC. (I have strong negative opinions on AfC for non-COI editors.) This has been a poor year for GAN before the drive, but I've been heartened to see you jumping into a big review.
For a lot of people from newer cohorts, including myself, I think there's a lot of offwiki community activity -- real-time communication is just that much more powerful than asynchronous. This can have complicated consequences, because there's a history of distrust around offwiki communication based on some high-profile incidents in the IRC era. I have a lot of thoughts about this as a generation gap, both in terms of wiki-generations and in term of literal age generations. (I think about the "registered several years before becoming active" issue that Val and I mentioned in those Signpost comments a lot. One of the consequences is that it still introduces an age floor -- someone who registered in 2005 and became active in 2023 is still likely a very different person to someone who registered and became active in 2023.)
On a personal level, I found "making a userpage to list articles I've worked on" a pretty easy way to suddenly get a step up on getting into the community. Wikipedia is a "pay your dues" culture, though at the same time a flat hierarchy -- there's a complicated intersection here I've been meaning to essay a bit, but essentially "it's a culture that expects you to pay your dues, but makes little differentiation between people who have even if they have very different hats, edit counts, etc". There's an interesting psychological effect when you go around with a lot of things to point at. Vaticidalprophet 06:24, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Vaticidalprophet Hello, I appreciate you for stepping in!
- To be honest, my biggest problem with AfC is not about the quality of the work (there are definitely some very good reviewers out there, some of whom helped me a lot when I was writing my own drafts), but rather the lack of active users and direct communication. Having tried my hand at reviewing drafts myself, however, I understand that it's quite a time-consuming process, and not many people can dedicate themselves to it consistently.
- Yes, I admit I chose a pretty challenging article to start from upon joining the backlog drive, but I still hope to get that review over the line as swiftly as possible!
- As a new face around here, I can't say much about the generation gap, especially since I'm still getting to know other people and how they help the platform work as it does; actually, I've just never been a fan of social media and IRC in general, and I've mostly avoided creating profiles. I acknowledge they do help people stay in touch with one another more easily than simple messages do, though...
- I do have plans for my own userpage: I already created one on it.wiki, and only the lack of time has been holding me back from completing another one over here. I definitely think it's a handy "CV" to explain what you do and how you interact with other users on the site. Also, you're probably right about Wikipedia having a "pay your dues" culture, but honestly that's fine for me: at the end of the day, "grinding" is not the only way to get public respect, because factors like the quality of your works, your will to help and your sensibility towards everyone else (whether they are newbies or experts) can also be taken in high consideration. That's a lesson I learned from my previous experience on Genius, a site that has similarly based its hierarchy on these kinds of values. Oltrepier (talk) 10:12, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
Your draft article, Draft:Alessandro Ciardi (footballer)
Hello, Oltrepier. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Alessandro Ciardi".
In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been deleted. When you plan on working on it further and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.
Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. ✗plicit 14:07, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for notifying me: I've genuinely forgot about this draft for a while. Plus, on second thought, it didn't make much sense to prepare that biography so early, since the player is still 16 years old and looks far from making his first professional appearances (at least for now)... WikiCup 2023 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
- Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
- Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
- Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Autopatrolled granted
Hi Oltrepier, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.
Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.
Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! – Joe (talk) 05:47, 8 September 2023 (UTC)

With the 2023 contest now concluded, I will be standing down as a judge due to real life commitments, so I hope that another editor will take over running the competition. Please get in touch if you are interested. Next year's competition will hopefully begin on 1 January 2024. You are invited to sign up to participate in the contest; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors. Looking for advice re bio
Hello @Oltrepier
Thanks for your comment on Draft:Fiona Harvey Although I am very experienced in creating new articles in general I have almost never (or maybe never I forget) created a biographical article from scratch (very occasionally I have created one by translation). So the reason I put this in as a draft was because I was not sure if she was notable. Do you think she is notable?
I looked for her date and place of birth but presumably she keeps that private. Thanks for the link to the manual of style but as it is rather long can you be more specific about what I should do? Chidgk1 (talk) 14:44, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Chidgk1: Hello! Thank you for clarifying and asking!
- I do think she's notable enough, but you should add more information about her career: copying most of the information you included in the lead section (and, of course, putting it in chronological order) would actually be a good place to start! Also, you should add more on her Environment Story of the Year prizes, if possible, by highlighting the specific reports/articles she worked on and won those accolades for.
- About the MoS guidelines, I would suggest you to put newspaper names under italics, and be careful with consecutio temporum, as my first bits of advice. You can also find a more condensed list of tips over here!
- You could also take a look at the articles of other journalists, such as Ed Yong, in order to see how you should structure the page and which types of information you should include.
- I hope this will give you some more clarity... : D Oltrepier (talk) 18:45, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Chidgk1 Hey, looks like I've been proved wrong, because your draft has been accepted!
- This article is still a stub for now, though, so I would suggest you to follow my tips, hopefully they're helpful enough.
- On a side note, Happy Holidays! : D Oltrepier (talk) 11:16, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
