Wiktionary:Old English translations

Old English died out almost a thousand years ago, and modern "Old English" is an artificial constructed language made to be as close as possible to the real Old English- but not Old English itself. The fact that you've added translations to Wiktionary entruies for things that didn't exist or couldn't have been known about by Old English speakers a millennium ago tells me that you're not being careful enough: the only places you could have gotten those are wikis and other websites that aren't valid sources as far as Wiktionary is concerned.

You should never add translations in languages that you don't speak fluently yourself unless you have good references and know enough about the language to avoid misinterpreting those references. Don't ever just copy what other web sites have. Chuck Entz (talk) 23:14, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

@Chuck Entz: And Old English Wikipedia article tiles are not good enough? — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 00:55, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
Absolutely not. Wikis are never acceptable sources, because there's no citable source. Wikipedias are the worst because even with modern languages it's quite common for editors to not know the correct term for something in the language (if there even is one). Since they can't have an article without a title, they make something up. I can't tell you how many times we've deleted entries for words that have never been used anywhere but Wikipedias.
One of my first Wiktionary entries was taken from a Portuguese Wikipedia article and was deleted because it turned out not to be a real Portuguese word. This was for a type of fruit that grows in Portuguese-speaking countries and can be found in Portuguese reference works (under the correct name- not the one I used). If that can happen with one of the world's major languages, it can happen with any language. Chuck Entz (talk) 01:25, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
@Chuck Entz: Fair enough. Thanks for the heads-up. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 11:26, 6 January 2019 (UTC)

Tropisim discussion?

Hi, I recently read the page on HIV tropism on which it looks like you placed a merge proposal template a few weeks ago, but when I click on the blue "Discussion" link in that article, I am not taken to any actual discussion— just to the talk page of the tropism article. IS there a discussion somewhere? Or was one never started? Am hoping you can help clarify this. Thanks! A loose noose (talk) 01:19, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

Re: your edit at this article, a crime is determined to be a hate crime, with enhanced legal consequences, during criminal investigation. Your removal of the word "suspected", as used by the source cited at that time, pre-supposes that the investigation will confirm this element. You may not do so. It is a hateful crime, no doubt, but it may not be described as a confirmed hate crime until reliable sources report that authorities have done so. Do you understand? General Ization Talk 20:13, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Also, please note that TMZ is not considered a reliable source for any content in Wikipedia. See WP:RSN if you have questions. General Ization Talk 20:15, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

@General Ization: You might like to assume good faith and be somewhat less patronising in your Talk: messages. At the point when I tidied up that paragraph, TMZ was the main source with any detail — shortly thereafter more-widely reported — and was already reporting it without the caveat of "suspected" (which itself is non-neutral). As I only had a moment, I made a minimal edit to make the paragraph better than it was previously, in the knowledge that someone else would come tidy it up better when they had a chance. (And it was not long before CPD described it as a hate crime. Please take your high-horse elsewhere. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies)
TMZ is an unreliable source and may not be used as source here, even if there is no other source (and in fact there was, the Variety report I have now restored). And I never supposed bad faith, nor indicated that I did, but your edit was misguided for the reasons I explained. Candidly, I was surprised that you did so, given the number and length of your editing history. Also, I have yet to see the "Chicago Police Department describe it as a hate crime." It has been described as a possible and suspected hate crime. General Ization Talk
As for "take your high-horse elsewhere", see civility. My messages here to you are civil, whether or not you like them; that is not. General Ization Talk 20:53, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
You're right; I had misread a tweet previously and hadn't spotted that CPD's statement mentioned suspected; apologies. Still, your message was very confrontational; you might want to consider tone in future messages. I guess we're gonna have to agree to disagree on our civility towards eachother. — OwenBlacker (talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 20:57, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

DYK for Tanya Saracho

On 8 March 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tanya Saracho, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that for Vida, Tanya Saracho assembled an all-Latinx, "heavily queer" writers' room and a directorial team who are all Latinx or women of color? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tanya Saracho. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tanya Saracho), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Proposed deletion of File:Clash of Civilizations Map6 (Europe).png

The file File:Clash of Civilizations Map6 (Europe).png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned, no description, unclear what this image is supposed to represent. Bunch of other similar images deleted at FfD in 2009, not sure why this didn't get included.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ♠PMC(talk) 09:23, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:User Syrc-2

A tag has been placed on Category:User Syrc-2 requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! PJP vs PCP terminology

I am certain that this edit was well-intentioned, but I hope you won't embark on a campaign to "fix" Wikipedia when the scientific consensus is still split on whether to switch from one acronym to the other. "PCP" is not wrong - to the contrary, it's still in use by major guidelines committees and others - because it has a long history of use and is easily mapped to "pneumocystis pneumonia". As a specialist in this area, I can assure you that it's an unsettled issue and WP should reflect reliable sources, not current shifts. Cheers! — soupvector (talk) 23:06, 1 September 2019 (UTC)

@Soupvector: I think you missed the point of the edit. The article referred to Pneumocystis jirovecii at the start of the AIDS Crisis, so I changed it to refer to PCP and merely make a mention of the newer name, so as not to confuse readers unfamiliar with the Plague Years. You're directing your concern to the wrong user 😊 — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 09:57, 28 September 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!
