DYK for London Partnership Register

On 25 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article London Partnership Register, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that, before same-sex unions were legally recognised in the UK, the London Partnership Register allowed nearly 1,000 couples to celebrate their relationships? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/London Partnership Register. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, London Partnership Register), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Wiki-project Prussia

Hey there OwenBlacker,

I recently saw that you're a member of the inactive project Prussia, I also joined a few days ago, and today submitted a draft article about Landkreis Heilsberg. Anyway I wanted to ask you if you would be interested in reviving the project and recruiting and memebers Crainsaw (talk) 13:39, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

@Crainsaw: Sorry for the delayed response. I'm afraid I devote a lot of time to the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group now and I don't really have the capacity to be very helpful here. Sorry — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 19:05, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
its alright i was just asking to see if any existing member still wanted to help Crainsaw (talk) 19:08, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Hey Guettarda, I've been writing up a how-to at m:User:OwenBlacker/Customising your fonts on Meta. D'you wanna take a look and give me some constructive criticism on the content?
I'm very conscious I might have made it way too overcomplicated 😅 — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk; please {{ping}} me in replies) 18:35, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially-designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

I dunno if you got the ping

Hey. I dunno if you got the ping, would you or someone else from the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group be able to chime in at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies#Lia Thomas on Wikidata? Hopefully you, given your familiarity with Wikidata's policies and guidelines. There's some issues at that discussion which I think the user group would be well suited to handling, especially in line with goals 5 and 7 of the user group. Thanks. Sideswipe9th (talk) 15:36, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey, sorry, I had seen the ping and was ADHDing about replying to it; I just replied there now (indeed before seeing this ping 😅). Thank you for pinging me on it, @Sideswipe9th; please do ping me for other conversations if you want to make sure I see them — one of the things I find frustrating on here is how difficult it can be to keep track of conversations going on in different places. Thanks again! — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 16:36, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
No worries! I totally get you on the ADHD thing, keeping track of all the conversations you might be involved in is a nightmare when you have the working memory of a goldfish! Meds help a little, but working memory is still shot. Sideswipe9th (talk) 17:02, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

July 2023

  Hi OwenBlacker! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 10:12, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Hey @Jonathan A Jones, thanks for the heads-up. Which edit are you referring to? I make a lot of minor edits and occasionally mark some more substantive edits as minor by accident. — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 10:53, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
It was the edit to Simon Edge which I first saw [1]. Whether the language tagging edits count as minor is debatable, but that one certainly wasn't - though definitely a good edit. Jonathan A Jones (talk) 12:30, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
I'd disagree; I would consider that minor — sure, I added an infobox, which might be debatable, but language tagging, formatting and linking in refs certainly all are. There's no change to the substantive content; it's all GNOME-work. Guess we might need to agree to disagree — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 13:05, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

August 2023 - Transgender rights in the United Kingdom

It looks like [2] you are accusing me of being disruptive. This looks like a personal attack to me. Disagreement is not disruption. Would you care to clarify your comment? Sweet6970 (talk) 14:38, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

I've corrected the wording to more accurately reflect what I was trying to say — "could be considered to be disruptive" rather than "would be disruptive". But I wasn't accusing you of anything, much less making a personal attack. Perhaps we both need to remember to be better at assuming good faith. — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 15:17, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

More of an update to talk about the changes the Building Safety Act make and the ways in which things have started diverging between England and Wales would be awesome. But I only made the edit because I had literally just been reading something while trying to buy a flat 😅

Edits to Baroness Joanna Shields page

My name is Laura and I work for Joanna Shields, Baroness Shields, a baron, businessperson, and former British politician. The page about her was recently tagged for COI and advert issues due to some poor edits made years ago. I posted here regarding my desire to address the substance of the tags with a re-write or heavy trims, to remove the promotional content. I was hoping you might be willing to chime in on the proposed trims and/or the suggestion for a rewrite. Let me know. Sam Altman

Thanks for the new references. I see there's a larger problem than just the dispute at Sam Altman. I've never given WP:CT/GG disputes much attention. Is there somewhere to request help at this point, or are you waiting until there's a clear WP:AE or WP:AN/WP:ANI case? - Hipal (talk) 20:26, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for messaging; I've been repairing some of the damage (and improving those articles further a little) during the BoT call just now and I've added a {{Uw-vandalism3}} warning to the user's talk page earlier. Hopefully that should stop things, but I want to make sure the user has had a clear and specific warning before looking at AE or ANI. — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 20:38, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
I have boldly edited pages where in my view references to someone's sexuality is irrelevant. To be accused of vandalism for this is not acceptable. As a gay man who has worked in technology for 32 years, I have a view about this, as my bold editing has been. Wikipedia is not censored. Juddlackland (talk) 18:27, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
@Juddlackland: As I have just pointed out on your own Talk: page, it is vandalism to be removing relevant information without consensus. Of the people's biographies you have removed their sexuality from, several are people for who their sexuality is a key part of their work.
I too am a gay man who has been working in technology (for nearly 30 years in my case). Our personal views are not the key point here, rather the consensus on biographies. Censoring people's sexuality out of their articles is vandalism, not "boldness". You need to stop doing that. — OwenBlacker (he/him; Talk) 22:22, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Accusation of vandalism

I have boldly edited pages where in my view the references to someone's sexuality in my view were unnecessary. It is not vandalism and to accuse me of it is not in the spirit of Wikipedia. Juddlackland (talk) 18:08, 9 December 2023 (UTC)
