WikiProject Africa
editHi RomanDeckert,
I saw your work on articles related to Africa and wanted to say hello, as I work in the topic area too. If you haven't already, you might want to watch the WikiProject Africa talk page, which is a noticeboard for Wikipedia's Africa coverage. It's a great place to ask questions, collaborate, discuss style/structure precedent, and stay informed about Africa-related content. Take a look for yourself!
And if you're looking for other juicy places to edit, consider adopting a cleanup category or participating in one of our current formal discussions.
Feel free to say hi on my talk page and let me know if these links were helpful (or at least interesting). Welcome to Wikipedia! Hope to see you around. czar 23:22, 11 February 2018 (UTC)
Babiker Awadalla
editHi,
I see you are a great expert of Sudan. Have you ever met former Prime Minister Babiker Awadalla? He appears to be still alive at 101, but some sources report he lives in Dublin with his son, some other he lives in Alexandria with his whole family. Reports on him seem to be contradictory and in September 2016 an obituary for him was published, probably prematurely. Do you know something more? Thanks in advance, --Folengo (talk) 17:33, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for having asked on Twitter. --Folengo (talk) 09:35, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
Hey
editHello, I saw that you are very active concerning the topic Greeks in Sudan and that you apparently reside in Khartoum, seing that you uploaded a photo from the SNM. I am working on a topic that will probably also interest you: the kingdom of Alodia, which had been Christianized in the 6th century and showed strong Byzantine influences. There are a few archaeological pieces in the SNM which I would gladly use for the article, but I would need someone to make photos of them. They are probably not exhibited, so one would have to ask if one can access them. If you are interested let me know and I will send you more details. Regards, LeGabrie (talk) 15:38, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Birri
editDo you know what the situation is for the Birri language and people of Deim Zubeir? It would be good to know if anything has changed since Santandrea had written his 1966 article on Birri. Greenwhitedino (talk) 00:55, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Dear Greenwhitedino, thank you for your message and apologies for not getting back earlier! I am afraid I don't know about the current situation of the Birri language and otherwise only the bits and pieces of humanitarian news which I try to update in the article from time to time.. However, I do a South Sudanese expert who visited Deim Zubeir rather recently and could put you in touch, cheers! RomanDeckert (talk) 09:12, 2 April 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks @RomanDeckert:. Do you have his contact, or should I email you? Greenwhitedino (talk) 01:18, 25 April 2020 (UTC)

Jasmina Metwaly photo
editHi Roman, I stumbled upon your photo File:GermanPavilionVeniceBiennale2015PresentationKreuzberg RomanDeckert.jpg and as I have created the Wikidata entry about Jasmina Metwaly and maybe try to write about her, I'm wondering if you have another photo of her? I don't want to crop her from that group image. Thanks for checking your memory … ;-) Regards, (pls ping me in your answer, thx) --elya (talk) 14:51, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
- Dear elya, thanks a lot, great effort, certainly very worthwhile! I am afraid I don't remember having taken another photo of her, as I was focused on Zielony. And if I did, it would be stuck on an HD in the - as it happens - Metwali-part of Lebanon, sigh.. Best wishes & looking forward to the article!RomanDeckert (talk) 19:58, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Two places in Southern Lebanon
editHi Roman, at User_talk:Onceinawhile#Pictures... we are trying to locate some 19th century paintings of Southern Lebanon. Two that I am stuck on are here:
- 31. Ruines de Hazour ou Hazireh. This is about 2km north of Ayta ash Shab
Any chance you recognise these specific locations? Onceinawhile (talk) 08:40, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thank you,Onceinawhile, you are really doing great work! In fact, I happened to come across these very pictures the other and wondered the same. Unfortunately, all travel plans to Tyre are cancelled basically until a vaccination has arrived.. plus: my old phone with the number of Dr. Badawi crashed, but this is all the more reason now to get his number from friends and ask him about those places. Otherwise, I reckon a good chance would be to contact Patricia Antaki Masson who produced a chapter with a map about medieval ruins of Tyre in "Sources de l'Histoire de Tyr II" by Gatier et al. Would you like to write to her or should I? Cheerio! RomanDeckert (talk) 12:26, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Roman, thank you for your message. Dr. Badawi sounds like a fantastic source – there may be noone else in the world who knows the area better.
- On the ruin south east of Tyre, I assume it must have been one of the defensive towers like your photo here before it was reconstructed at some point.
- On Hazour, I found a description here[1] "Hazzur (N d). — This is a rock-cut tomb with a masonry arch over the entrance; it is at the ruins of Kh. Hazireh. The masonry appears to be Roman from the cutting of the stones; at present the vault has fallen in and quite blocked up the entrance to the tomb ; the dimensions are given by Dr. Robinson ('Later Biblical Researches,' p. 63) before this accident. The arch is round; the stones rather large, but not bevelled, and the whole bears the marks of extreme antiquity. Beneath the vault the tlat rock is cut away to form a sloping passage leading down to the sepulchre. This passage is four feet wide, twelve feet long, and at the lower end five and a half feet deep. Here is a low portal leading into an excavated chamber with a sarcophagus. The vault above is six feet broad by twelve long, and nine and one-third high. There is another sepulchre south-west of this similar to it, but having no vault over it. The following is Robinson's description of this place: 'The arch is round; the stones rather large, but not bevelled; the whole bears the marks of extreme antiquity. Beneath the vault the flat rock is cut away to form a sloping passage leading down to the sepulchre. This passage is 4 feet wide, 12 feet long, and at the lower end 5 1/2 feet deep. Here is a low portal leading into an excavated chamber with a sarcophagus. The vault above is 6 feet broad by 12 long and 9 1/2 high. There is another sepulchre south-west of this and similar to it, excavated in a flat rock, but having now no vault over it.' This vault was demolished the year before Renan went to Palestine. He suggests En Hazer as the ancient name of Hazzur."
- It seems the site has been a contender for the name of Tel Hazor.
- If you are able to contact Dr. Badawi or Ms. Masson it would be great.
- Onceinawhile (talk) 13:22, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
We found another fascinating lost monument in Southern Lebanon, called by Ernest Renan "the most striking ruin in the whole country". It is at 33°06′53″N 35°17′26″E / 33.114823°N 35.290613°E, equidistant between Marwahin and Ramyah. Lots of detail on it at the PEF Survey here. But nothing on the internet in modern times. Onceinawhile (talk) 08:15, 22 October 2020 (UTC)
- Dear Onceinawhile, ummm, errr, well, it has been quite a while, but now finally flights are booked and I am about to return to Tyre for a few days at the end of November 2021, where I could ask Dr. Badawi then - are you still interested or have you solved the riddle in the meantime? Cheerio! RomanDeckert (talk) 17:00, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- How lucky you are! We have not yet solved this riddle. And some others have come up in the meantime. Also @Huldra: has been doing some great work on the villages of southern Lebanon; she may have other topics for Dr Badawi.
- I will have a think about other topics and revert. Onceinawhile (talk) 19:05, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

I just remembered the third topic. See User_talk:Onceinawhile#Mission_de_Phénicie. Two years ago you took this photo. Well it turns out that Renan found a world-class mosaic nearby, which is now in the Louvre – the main attraction of Room 186. The question for Dr Badawi is exactly where was this mosaic found – presumably there are still visible ruins of the “Church of St Christopher”. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:26, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Two..or one...village(s) in Sidon-district.
editHi, I am trying to "clean up" some village pictures over on commons. My question is: Are Khrayeb and Kharayeb (Sidon) the same place? Any help would be greatly appreciated! regards, Huldra (talk) 21:03, 24 January 2021 (UTC)
- Dear Huldra, it has been a while, but now finally the flights are booked and I am about to return to Tyre for a few days at the end of this month (November 2021), where I could ask chief-archaeologist Dr. Ali Badawi - are you still interested in this? Cheerio, RomanDeckert (talk) 17:09, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, I absolutely am. I'm trying to add info from Robinson' 1839 travels in the region; he (mostly) added what religions they followed in the various villages. Also info from Guerin's travels and the 1596 tax-records: long-term goal is to add all that to the various places. (Yeah: I don't expect to finish this year. Or next year. Or the next...)
- As for the Kharayeb-places; they seem already to be merged.
- One thing you could ask any with a history-interest: what church did Guerin mean when he wrote about "scismatic greek", or "orthodox greek" etc? I really don't know which present-day church to link that to?
- Otherwise: Good luck with your travel to Lebanon! I hear the situation is pretty dire there, so best of luck to you, Huldra (talk) 23:43, 5 November 2021 (UTC).
- @Huldra: this table Arab Christians#Denominations should help. In the Levant it would usually mean the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch. Onceinawhile (talk) 00:13, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
Sorry for my brainfart
editHi, I want to apologise because I had a complete brainfart over at Rouelbeau Castle. I was working on the article and cleaning up some images and, in an edit summary, I called some of the images you added "useless" [2]: the world I actually wanted to use was actually "unnecessary"! I am really sorry, I really did not mean this as a personal attack. It is very unfortunate that we cannot change edit summaries... JBchrch (talk) 21:38, 26 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, JBchrch, I appreciate this gesture as well as your working on the article! I am aware that I tend to - what many WP-styleguide-guardians would call - over-illustrate articles, though I would reason that I keep in line with WP guidelines, i.e. not to distract from reading but rather use images to make people curious to read the text. And I have had some pretty unfriendly comments from style-"police" especially in the German-language WP, which I found really disheartening. So again, I do appreciate your gesture very much. Still, I would argue that some of the pictures you deleted were not "unnecessary" either. Obviously, the black cat was meant to be humourous, but the "Welcome to Choulex" photo I feel does illustrate that its medieveal history still plays a prominent role in the identity of that place nowadays, which is a piece of info with some value I reckon. In particular though, I find the drawings which you deleted valuable since it is rare enough to have pictorial sources from the 19th century and they do document somewhat the degree the ruins had crumbled at that time. However, while I myself shy away from such deletions I would not get into an "edit-war" with you about them as I respect your other editing. Keep up the good work & cheerio, RomanDeckert (talk) 16:08, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your understanding Roman! I am much less confrontational than my edit summaries suggest, so I have no issue with reintroducing the images. I do perfectly see your point and looking at the article 24h later, I may have removed too much indeed. To be entirely transparent, my ambitions for this article is to clean it up real well and submit it for a WP:GA review, which I think it could pass after a little bit of housekeeping (which I enjoy doing). It is only for this reasons that I removed the cat picture, which really did not bother me, but may bother the folks at the GA reviews. Let me know if you think any differently. Cheers. JBchrch (talk) 21:37, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, JBchrch, this is a pleasant surprise indeed! Actually I was just glad that somebody noticed the article at all, because it is somehow a special place and I learnt from it a lot about local history and society here as well, so I am grateful if a GA gets it a bigger audience + I do learn from the improvements you have done! Best wishes, RomanDeckert (talk) 05:45, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Women in Red
editHi there, RomanDeckert, and thank you for the very well presented biographies of women you have recently contributed. I have been looking through your past contributions and am impressed with the quality of your editing, not only in English but also in German and French. As far as I can see, you have not yet registered as a member of Women in Red. Perhaps you would like to do so, starting with the box at the top of our main wp:Women in Red page. I think your continued involvement would inspire many of our participants to follow your example. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 11:50, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for registering, Roman, and welcome to Women in Red. As for meeting people in Geneva, the only one I know is Nattes à chat who is particularly active on the French version of Wikipedia. She will no doubt be able to put you in touch with others. It's good to hear you intend to cover more people connected to the Red Cross. We have a very brief Wikidata-based List of redlisted Red Cross women but there are much longer lists of people from the other countries you mention on our Redlists. If you have not already done so, you might find it useful to look through our Primer for creating women's biographies. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 09:35, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

Fakhr al-Din - Tyre building works
editHello Roman! Thanks again for contributing the section on Fakhr al-Din's building works in Tyre. The article is being reviewed for Good article status and some referencing issues came up for this section. - Hi @RomanDeckert:, I just wanted to let you know I really did enjoy the article, and would love to see it reach GA status. I've been adding inline notes with my opinions/assessments. I am not some law-giver or anything so take my or any any other individual's views with a grain of salt, of course. editAnother mystery for Dr. Badawi. These incredible statues were apparently found in Sidon 120 years ago, but the location was never found again and today noone knows where it was. The 2013 article includes some good research. Pinging @Elias Ziade: who may also be interested.

DYK for Marguerite Gautier-van Berchem
editOn 10 February 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Marguerite Gautier-van Berchem, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Swiss archaeologist Marguerite Gautier-van Berchem created a service for the International Committee of the Red Cross to help prisoners of war from the French colonies during World War II? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Marguerite Gautier-van Berchem. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Marguerite Gautier-van Berchem), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
Help
editDear RomanDeckert, I was really lifted by your thanking me for my Rashidieh edit in January. I was at the beginning of a project of working through the twenty plus years of ‘Middle East International’ that I have on my shelves. To give evidence of the validity of this source I started an article about MEI which has now been moved to Draft:Middle East International. Can you advise me? I am posting a similar message to editor al Ameer son who also thanked me for an edit I did using the same source editing the Kisrawan article. Many thanks. Monika Borgmann moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, Monika Borgmann, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. AngusW🐶🐶F (bark • sniff) 16:06, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- Dear AngusW (and User:Arthistorian1977),
- it would have probably been wiser for me to first fully prepare the article in the sandbox before submitting it, though I may add to my excuse that I have never experienced such a swift relegation to draft status. I have now expanded it accordingly with 35 more references to US, UK, German, French, Swiss and Middle Eastern reliable, independent media from NYT to The Guardian to Le Monde, Der Spiegel and Neue Zürcher Zeitung etc. I trust that Monika Borgmann's notability will become very clear from it very quickly.
- Now, I was rather shocked to get the automatic reply upon submitting the draft that the review may take four months or even longer! As you could see from the templates I put on the talk page:
- This page was created or improved during the Geofocus: West Asia edit-a-thon hosted by the Women in Red project in October 2022. The editor(s) involved may be new; please assume good faith regarding their contributions before making changes.
- Hence, to be honest, I would have appreciated if you had taken a brief look at the German-language original of the article to see that there were plenty of references to reliable, independent sources and if you thus had assumed good faith that I would have likewise added them accordingly to the English version.
- Be that as it may, I hereby appeal to you to PLEASE very quickly review the page, since you were indeed also VERY quick (19 minutes!) to police it to draft status. I do understand the need for such patrolling to ensure standards for notability etc. and appreciate your committment to that end. Therefore I would be grateful, especially with regard to the causes of Women in Red, if you were willing to give it urgent priority so that the article can participate in this month's WiR campaign. P-L-E-A-S-E.
- Many thanks in advance & best regards RomanDeckert (talk) 13:49, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Potential conflict of interest
editHi RomanDeckert, I see that you uploaded File:FrankGarbely ByRomanDeckert18102022.jpg as part of writing Frank Garbely and claimed the image as your own work. Can you clarify whether you have any external connection with Garbely that would constitute a conflict of interest? signed, Rosguill talk 20:13, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
- Hello Rosguill,
- firstly, let me assure you that I much respect and appreciate your efforts on quality control.
- Let me also assure you that I have no external relation with Garbely - personal, religious, political, academic, legal, or financial (including holding a cryptocurrency) - whatsoever. None. I first came across his name as a reader of one of his books some 20 years ago, then a few years ago again while watching an ARTE documentary film by him, then likewise this year, which left me baffled that there was no Wikipedia article about him at all, considering his obvious prominence in Swiss journalism and beyond. So I wrote to him through my @wikipedian.ch mail about my intention to create a Wikipedia article about him, adding that it is always an important part of my motivation for writing to have images for illustrating such an article and asking whether we could meet for a photo session. Hence, the picture I uploaded is from the first and only meeting we had, from a two-minutes photo session after two hours of talking historical scandals. Thus, it is simply impossible to claim that he is a friend, though we were on friendly terms. I did not get paid by him or anybody else and I will not be, either, in whichever form. In case you still have suspicions about my motives, I may forward to you my introductory mail to him.
- Having said that I would appreciate if you were willing to elaborate a little on why you suspected that I may be hiding a COI. I re-read that determining whether someone has a COI is not a judgement about that person's integrity, but I must admit that your request for clarification does feel rather unpleasantly as though you put my integrity into question and so I am eager to understand what prompted your check on me. Thank you & best regards RomanDeckert (talk) 22:32, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the detailed response. The source of concern was just your claiming ownership of the photo, as that is usually a sign that the editor and subject have some form of relationship. Between your explanation and history of editing I don't have any remaining concerns. signed, Rosguill talk 22:36, 27 November 2022 (UTC)
Daniel Hellmann moved to draftspace
editAn article you recently created, Daniel Hellmann, is not suitable as written to remain published. It appears there is a WP:UPE or WP:COI conflict. Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, and have addressed the UPE/COI issue, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. As per WP policy, please do not move into mainspace yourself. Onel5969 TT me 18:58, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- Dear Onel5969, let me first assure you that I truly appreciate your commitment to quality control, many thanks indeed. However, with all due respect, it appears that your notice to me is a non-specific copy-paste template. Obviously, verifiability cannot be a real issue given the quantity and quality of references, neither notability for the very same reason. Regarding your suspicion of a paid edit forgive me that as an experienced editor I really take that as an insult. You could have at least elaborated on that point. Some weeks ago another editor explained to me that from his experience it was the fact that I was both the editor of an article and the author of the featured photos hinted towards a paid edit. My response then was as it is now: for me personally it is very demotivating to write an article which I cannot illustrate with images, which is why I then often take them myself. To make it very clear: I have had no material benefit from this edit whatsoever and am not going to have it. I simply went to the vernissage of Hellmann, whom I saw for the last time some seven years ago, and was so impressed by his works that I am on the best way to become vegan myself. And I was surprised that there was no WP article on him yet given his prominence - especially in Switzerland, but also beyond - and hence changed that. So, I must admit that I am a fan but evidently not in any relationship which would constitute any COI. If you still insist on keeping the article in draft, please do provide specific reasons. Thank you & best regards RomanDeckert (talk) 13:05, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

editThank you so much for uploading the picture, very nice one too! It's a very nice addition to his article. I also just used it in List of burial places of classical musicians. Regards, Gor1995 𝄞 23:02, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you, Gor1995, much appreciated and gratifying feedback! It is a pity I did not see your list before going to Sils recently, but I shall use it from now on to take photos in Switzerland of those burial places that only feature external images so far, so will stay in touch! All the best for 2024, RomanDeckert (talk) 11:42, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thats great! Thanks so much, looking forward to hear from you again :)
- PS: I just would like to point out that there is a grave in Switzerland that does not even have an external image because it seems that no one has ever uploaded it anywhere in the internet... It's the Artur Schnabel grave in Schwyz. In the "Schnabel Music Foundation" website one can find a PDF guide on how to locate it. Gor1995 𝄞 12:27, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Excellent, now that it an appealing challenge to give myself a treat next week for my birthday when I shall be in that corner of Switzerland anyway! Hope I will make it!! Cheerio, RomanDeckert (talk) 13:52, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so, so much for the great pictures you've been taking these days! Also, taking them in winter makes them beautiful with all the snow. The Schnabel's grave one is amazing, very artistic, and additionally it's probably the first one ever uploaded to the internet!
- Also, happy birthday!! I hope you enjoyed :) -- Gor1995 𝄞 15:21, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you lots for the appreciation, good wishes - and inspiration, Gor1995, it was really a great trip and felt rewarding! In fact, the polished surface of the tombstone was a bit difficult to photograph since it mirrored myself, so I had to lie down in the snow on the walkway in front of it.. Looking much forward to filling in more blank spaces when the occasion arises!RomanDeckert (talk) 22:27, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks so much for Fricsay's grave picture! I can see that the bust was added not long ago, pretty nice. Also the reflection of Lake Constance is an awesome touch. -- Gor1995 𝄞 17:52, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you once more, [User:Gor1995|Gor1995]], for the inspiration, which led me to a place in Switzerland that I might otherwise not have seen and to a story that I might otherwise not have learnt! Also for the appreciation of the image's composition, as I again I had to lay down flat on the ground in order to avoid taking a photo of myself being reflected on the tombstone.. I may have a good chance to pass by the grave of Joan Sutherland tomorrow, looking much forward to that discovery and to staying in contact! Best regards from Romandie, RomanDeckert (talk) 21:47, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you so much! Abbado was the first entry of the list and he deserved this great picture! — Gor1995 𝄞 23:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you once again, Gor1995, this time for prompting me to return to that incredibly beautiful valley. I had been there first a year ago, but unfortunately missed out on the cemetery. It was a bit of an effort to go there now, since it is quite remote and the valley is - righly so - barred for car traffic. But it was worth the time, both in terms of marvelling at the landscape and at the modesty of Abbado's grave. Such an honour to be connected with him through this photo project and to start your list with that image! Hoping to be able to take pics of the graves in Ticino soon I remain as ever with best regards and wishes, RomanDeckert (talk) 10:27, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Thanks for your contributions for the photographs of graves of figures in Liechtenstein. I am sure you have helped many others too, but it means a lot to me as it boosted the quality of the articles and even allowed for some information I was previously unaware of to be found. Keep up the good work. TheBritinator (talk) 15:33, 30 January 2024 (UTC) |
- Thank you so much, TheBritinator, your appreciation really means a lot to me! I mean I really enjoy taking those photos, uploading them and inserting them into articles as such, but this kind of feedback feels truly rewarding!!RomanDeckert (talk) 16:12, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
A return to "Tyre"
editGreetings and felicitations. After nearly four years, I finally returned to "Tyre" and your comment. I just fixed the image placement again, but there's another small problem—Youssef Mroue's book, which you introduced in this edit. I can't find any mention of the book other than in copies of the article in question, and the lack of a publisher is causing an error. I'm wondering what the publisher is, as well as the ISBN, and, if possible, the WorldCat ID. If the book is not in English, the title in the original language and the language itself would also be very helpful, please. (I do realize that the edit is nearly four and half years old, and you may no longer have any record or recollection of the book.) —DocWatson42 (talk) 10:13, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
