ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2022).
- Consensus has been found in an RfC to automatically place RfAs on hold after one week.
- The article creation at scale RfC has been closed.
- An RfC on the banners for the December 2022 fundraising campaign has been closed.
- A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. (T319449)
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 12, 2022 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
- The proposed decision for the 2021-22 review of the discretionary sanctions system is open.
- The arbitration case Reversal and reinstatement of Athaenara's block has been closed.
- The arbitration case Stephen has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 1 December 2022.
- A motion has modified the procedures for contacting an admin facing Level 2 desysop.
- Tech tip: A single IPv6 connection usually has access to a "subnet" of 18 quintillion IPs. Add
/64
to the end of an IP in Special:Contributions to see all of a subnet's edits, and consider blocking the whole subnet rather than an IP that may change within a minute.

Kosmos
It's true that only some of the Kosmos satellite's on that list fit into the category of "satellites that broke up in space" but I don't think that for a list like this it is required that every item on the list fit in the category. And since many of the satellites don't have their own page it is the only way for someone interested to find their way to those. Do you think people will be confused by the category and believe that all the satellites on the list broke up in space?
Volcycle (talk) 18:40, 1 February 2023 (UTC)
- I think it's meaningless to add a category to a list article if it's not true for all entries on the list. Secretlondon (talk) 22:12, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

Consort
Hi, Secretlondon, how are you? As I said here, I can never remember whether, when there's no primary topic for a term, our dab page should be at that title or at the same followed by '(disambiguation)'. Anyway, I've now looked it up, and it seems that Consort was in the right place before all this started (WP:DABNAME: ... when a disambiguation page exists at the ambiguous term, there should also be a redirect to it from the "(disambiguation)" title). I think Consort (disambiguation) should again be moved back to where it was. I also think there should be a redirect to here at Draft:Consort, per WP:RDRAFT. If I'm wrong on either count do please say so! Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:15, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- I would have been helpful if all of that had been visible when I moved it. Hidden on someone's now archived talk page it's not visible. I'd no idea it had bene rejected. I guess I have a load of mess to sort out now.. Secretlondon (talk) 08:13, 15 May 2023 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
- As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.
- Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.
- The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
- Following a community referendum, the arbitration policy has been modified to remove the ability for users to appeal remedies to Jimbo Wales.

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023.
If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:20, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
UAA role accounts
Howdy. In regards to this edit, I am under the impression that role accounts should not be reported to UAA. This is based on the fact that I am a Twinkle maintainer and I was asked to remove the check box for shared names from Twinkle completely. Wikipedia talk:Twinkle/Archive 46#"Username_implies_shared_use". There is not currently a way to report a shared name of any kind, whether it be "Bob and Chris" or "ACME Widgets", to WP:UAA via Twinkle.
If I am not correct about some of this, or if there are any clarity issues, let's start a discussion somewhere so we can get everything in sync (Twinkle, WP:UAA/I, etc.) Thoughts? Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 15:30, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- I would like people to report these and we certainly block them routinely. "ACME widgets" is a bread and butter UAA case. "ACME Widgets secretary" would be a role account, and would be blockable unlike Mark at ACME Widgets. Twinkle users seem to report these as promotional, regardless. Introduction to contentious topics
You have recently edited a page related to climate change, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.
A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.
Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:
- adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
- comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
- follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
- comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
- refrain from gaming the system.
Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

- It was in related to this edit on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vandalism of Stonehenge, which is a climate change-related protest. You can pretty much ignore this if you do not intent to edit in the topic of climate change. This is just a standard message given to editors who edit for the first time in various contentious topics. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 20:51, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

Blocking an IP range
Hello, I decided to contact an admin about blocking 41.150.0.0/16 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · block user · block log). I previously reported this range to AIV twice; the first report expired, and the second was dismissed, with the admin telling me to report the range to ANI. My ANI report was archived without any reaction. While this was happening, a lot of vandalism was still coming out of this range. That's why I decided to contact an individual admin – an action against the range needs to be taken. If you think this range shouldn't be blocked, I will be glad if you explain why. Many thanks. Janhrach (talk) 16:33, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- You need to ask an admin who hangs out on AIV and knows what our thresholds are. The only areas I know very well is usernames and spam. I wouldn't feel comfortable with range blocking. Secretlondon (talk) 21:25, 16 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. Janhrach (talk) 17:17, 17 September 2024 (UTC)
- But first look - only one edit on 16th, and one on 15th. It's a South African ISP. Secretlondon (talk) 21:29, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
