Need help request from Zacharyslahr (talk)

Hello.

I need help with... insuring that my article have a neutral tone as well as making sure that I do not overstep boundaries within a medical context!

--Zacharyslahr (talk) 17:06, 18 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Zacharyslahr - I made some tweaks to the draft. Offhand the writing is pretty neutral, it's just the sourcing that needs some work. For example, the first source describes what many would say is racial trauma, however it doesn't explicitly use that term so it would be seen as original research to use this source to define the term. For this sort of thing you need a source that specifically uses the term racial trauma. Also, make sure that you source the sentence "This stressor is unique as it is confined to those within minority populations", as it's something that will be likely to be challenged. I'd also tweak it a little to attribute it to the source, as we need to be careful about writing in absolutes when it comes to anything in the medical field. Need help request from Tmontford on Stephanie Arnold

Hello,

I need help with checking that my wikipedia article for Stephanie Arnold is not seen as advertisement, as it was recently deleted for. I have no organizational ties with the author herself but I am doing this wikipedia page for a college class we are assigned a author and must create a wikipedia page for them and this was my research. I will like to know what changes that I should make so that it seems less promotional. Will it be the citations that I have?

Best,

Hi again Shalor. I think c:User talk:Dempsema#File:The Unicorn Girl.jpg might be one of the students your helping per Dempsema. Perhaps you can help clarify image licensing at Talk:The Unicorn Girl#Pictures? -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:57, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Things appear to have resolved themselves, so not sure if your assistance is still needed in this particular case, but maybe a general word or two about uploading files to Commons, etc. would be helpful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:16, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi I just AfDed the above article before I noticed on the talk page that it is part of this course Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/University_of_Washington_Tacoma/T_CORE_114F_Intro_to_Humanities_(Winter_2018) the subject IMHO comes nowhere near meeting WP:NMUSIC I carried out a before search. I was wondering how the subjects are chosen and assigned, is notability investigated beforehand? It seems a really tough one to try and create a page for this guy. Dom from Paris (talk) 16:55, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Just came across another one Yiğit Kolat which i think is really WP:TOOSOON. I don't understand why the students are being assigned subjects that do not readily meet notability criteria, it seems a little unfair. Dom from Paris (talk) 17:07, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks I have had a look at most and done a bit of copy editing here and there and added a couple of sources, most seem notable and some have been here for a while already. Cheers Dom from Paris (talk) 11:08, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Menright01, unfortunately there isn't a way to recover the content if it crashes so the only way to prevent info loss is to save often as you edit. I learned that one the hard way myself, on both Wikipedia and on a term paper. Also, I tried looking for your draft work but didn't see it in your edit history. Can you add a link to it? Combining Documentary theatre and verbatim theatre

Hello, I had a question. I'm working on editing the documentary theatre article for my class, and it occurred to me that it might make sense to combine that article and the one on verbatim theatre (both of which are not comprehensive) and have them redirect to a new page entitled "Theatre of the Real," a term coined by Carol Martin in her essay of the same title, that would cover all forms of documentary and verbatim theater, including theater of fact, and the more recent ethnodrama, research-based, and investigatory plays. Documentary and verbatim theater seem to be terms used at different times to describe similar genres, and it seems to make sense to pull them together into a single idea. Please let me know what you think of this idea. Thanks.

Lilliemer8519 (talk) 18:24, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Lilliemer8519. I'm concerned that the term is just too new, as Martin looks to have published her essay in 2012, and isn't widely used enough to justify merging both pages into one article. I did a quick search and it seems that when the term is used, it's in relation to Martin herself and her essay. My recommendation would actually be to work on an article about the book/term and briefly cover the information in these articles, but without merging them completely into this article. (IE, they remain on their own.) I'm just worried that if they were merged, someone would contest this by arguing that the term is too recent and would be considered a neologism. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:52, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
    • OK. I think I'll stick with documentary theatre, keeping the title of the page. However, I was wondering what you think about merging it with verbatim theatre so that verbatim theatre appears as a subset of documentary theatre? The two concepts are very similar, and I feel like verbatim theatre qualifies as a kind of documentary theatre rather than its own distinct genre. Lilliemer8519 (talk) 17:45, 22 March 2018 (UTC)
  • Lilliemer8519: Hmm... since the main page is relatively short it probably wouldn't pose a length issue if they were merged. I'd still recommend proposing a merge on the articles, just in case. I'll start this for you. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:42, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

Hello.

I need help with... ensuring that our mainspace information section of my sandbox is fit for the article "Voice Analysis".

--Sibyl.ambazhachalil (talk) 22:34, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Sibyl.ambazhachalil! The draft looks good, it just needs more in-line citations to really back up the claims, especially the Trayvon Martin one. It's not that the claim is especially controversial per se, just that anything that's about Martin tends to be seen as inherently controversial. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:11, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Helen.r (talk)

Hello.

I need help with...

1.) I would like some help formatting my citation so that the source for references 4 and 5 in my sandbox does not appear twice in the reference list.

2.) I don't feel that I have a good sense of what belongs in which section. Do you think the information I included in my proposal to the lead section is appropriate? I've read over the Lead Section help article, but I'm still not convinced I'm on the right track.

Thank you in advance!

--Helen.r (talk) 21:06, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Helen.r, are you editing via VisualEditor? If not, then you can get it by following these directions. I recommend VisualEditor because it's a lot easier as far as editing goes, especially when making a repeated citation.
As far as repeated citations go, with Visual Editor all you have to do is highlight the source (the number that looks like this: [1]), copy it by pressing CTRL and C, then paste it in the desired location (CTRL and V). In source mode it's a little more difficult since you have to "name" the source. This means that instead of having the tag "<ref>" at the front of the source, you would instead have something like "<ref name=":3">" or "<ref name=":Smith">" in front of the source, so that it looks like this:
<ref name=":3">{{cite journal|last1=McCombe|first1=Niamh|title=Methods of Author Identification|date=May 2002|page=9|url=https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:kxXvnQUgng4J:https://www.scss.tcd.ie/undergraduate/computer-science-language/bacsll_web/mccombe0102.pdf+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us|accessdate=5 March 2018}}</ref>
Other than that, I did want to caution you about using Niamh McCombe's work as a source. It's not that it's bad, just that since it's a paper written by someone going for a Bachelor's. Typically the only papers like this that are considered to be a reliable source are doctoral theses, as they undergo a fairly rigorous editorial process since they have to go by the doctoral board. Undergraduate papers and even graduate papers typically don't have that sort of oversight, even with a supervisor. I would avoid using it as a source and instead look at Niamh's sourcing to see where she got her material from and use that instead.
I did create a small draft of sorts from what you had in your draftspace to see what it would look like as a whole, as the content wouldn't be added to the article as bulletpoints. Your content is good, however some of it seems too specific for the lead paragraph and would instead be more suited for adding to the career section. This section is definitely in need of some organization and it doesn't look like the material you cover in your additions is really in the section as far as I can see. For it to have received that much attention, it definitely needs to be added. I think that you could pretty much add it "as is" into the section, with only a few tweaks to the first sentence for flow. As far as leads go, they're supposed to be very general overviews of the article topic (in this case a person) and shouldn't go too much into specifics. Need help request from God6181996 (talk)

Hello.

I have been looking at the authorship of the Wiki article labeled "Interrogation". Since I haven't really been adding any new content, but rather been filtering through possible citation errors and plagiarism, I was wondering if the Sandbox would still be a good place to work on this article. I understand Wikipedia's plagiarism rules apply to the Sandbox as well, and since checking authorship requires that I copy and paste what has already been seemingly plagiarized, I am reluctant to use the Sandbox. Please let me know if I can work in the Sandbox, or if I should work through a Word Doc, until I filter out the citation errors and plagiarism.

Thank you

--God6181996 (talk) 22:58, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi God6181996, I don't see where there are any plagiarism tags on the article. I ran the article through Earwig's Copyvio Detector and while it came up plagiarism likely, it looks like the websites it brought up took the material from the Wikipedia article as opposed to it being vice-versa. I think that it would be OK for you to work on a copy of this in your sandbox. My only note would be that when you copy the material, that you leave a note in the edit summary about where you took it from. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:48, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Jaimedepaola (talk)

Hello.

I need help with our group edits for the Forensic Linguistics article. Our potential edits are in our group sandbox.

--Jaimedepaola (talk) 23:24, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Jaimedepaola, I'm not entirely sure what will be added exactly, but my main notes are this:
  1. Make sure that everything is sourced very well with the highest possible sourcing, which is typically academic and scholarly sources.
  2. With examples, choose ones from source material or base your examples on examples given in the source. I wouldn't base your examples on comments made in news sources, as this would be seen as original research unless your sourcing explicitly uses those comments as an example. I'd also avoid using comments made in very controversial cases or events unless you have very good sourcing to justify its use and it's written very neutrally.
  3. Be careful of writing in essay style. With essays it's common to use a persuasive, more casual style, which clashes with the editing style Wikipedia uses. Essays also tend to have lengthier, fuller descriptions and explanations, whereas Wikipedia is supposed to be more of a brief summary of a topic. The proposed additions in your section and the one in Rheatata's brush against the essay style, so they could be tightened a little for tone and brevity. It's not bad, but it just needs a little more work to make it briefer and to make sure that it doesn't come across as you arguing a point. Also, make sure that the content is sourced and any opinions or claims are attributed to a specific person.
I hope this helps! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:57, 27 March 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Averyfieldx (talk)

Hello.

I need help with...

finding more reliable sources to get more information on how speech acts are studied in law.

--Averyfieldx (talk) 02:55, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Averyfieldx, have you set up an appointment with your university's research librarian? They would be an invaluable resource for this, as they would have access to your library's databases and holdings. I can't search your library's website, so my help is fairly limited. What I would suggest is that you try searching the library's law databases, as well as linguistic and language oriented databases like Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts and Ethnologue. I'd avoid using a basic Google search, as that can pull up a lot of content that wouldn't really be considered reliable sources. There's Google Scholar, but to be honest it'd be vastly inferior to what the research librarian could pull up. I found some things like this, this, and this, but I don't know that they're really what you're looking for.
If you want to look on your own through the databases that's fine as well - I would just search using qualifiers - these are seen as quotation marks placed around a specific phrase that tells the search engine to look for that specific phrase. For example, using "speech acts" tells the engine that you want to look for that phrase, rather than anything that has the words speech and acts in it individually. (On a side note, this works with almost all search engines.) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:10, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Post assignment assessment

Hi Shalor, Thank you for your comments on Sewinginthepast's talk page and for monitoring this more generally. I did indicate to my students A) that the GA status was optional and that B) it took some follow-through that would be far beyond the assignment. I did want to provide them with something, however, that would throw their edits back to the larger community so that they could possibly get feedback from anyone interested. Am I right in thinking that WP:PR would only be worth while if the editor was still sticking around to work? Because the project has already ended, this didn't make sense to suggest. Instead, I offered them some extra points if they did throw the article up to the relevant wikiproject for reassessment (I showed them how to find the places to do so within each wikiproject). Does this sound reasonable?

I also did float the potential option, if they wanted to stick around for it and if the article seemed to be at the point where it was warranted, that they could post a GA, but I didn't stress the commitment involved sufficiently. I'll make sure to be more careful about this next time especially since it is far beyond the scope of what I want require them to do. Etherfire (talk) 18:29, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Need Help with Media Addition

Hi Shalor, I think I fixed my previous issue with the peer review request and posted it on the right page. All seems well now. But for my article, [Dominique Morisseau], I would like to add a picture of the person to the info box but I'm having trouble figuring out how without violating the media rules. This author is still living and I am in contact with her. She has sent me a photo that I have permission to post but I don't own the copyright. How should I proceed? --Jlingreen (talk) 17:17, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Jlingreen, Ms. Morisseau would have to upload the photograph herself, as in order to upload the image she would have to issue it under a specific copyright. Can you direct her to this page: Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials, especially the section on what it means to donate an image. The reason for this is that in many cases the copyright owner (presumably Ms. Morisseau) doesn't want the image to be under a Creative Commons license in order to protect how the image is used, especially if it's something they use commercially. Another thing to take into consideration is that sometimes the person in the image doesn't own the image's copyrights, such as in the case of a theater taking a photograph of someone. While they may give the person permission to use the image for commercial reasons, the theater is the actual owner of the copyright. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:53, 3 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello.

I need help with... My introduction area about migration from israel to the west under UN deal

--Adriraylyn5 (talk) 21:57, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Adriraylyn5, I saw that your draft was moved to Draft:Israel_Sends_African_Migrants_West_Under_New_United_Nations_Deal. My concern here is that the article looks more like it's something that is meant to go in an existing article. My recommendation here is to revise the draft so that it's a little less specific to this one particular case of African migrants/refugees in Israel. I suggest focusing on African refugees in Israel in general and renaming the article to "African refugees in Israel". This means that the lead could be something like this:
Around the early 21st century African refugees began migrating to Israel in search of asylum.
You could add in some basic information that you'll go into more depth with later. One of the biggest things to be careful about is that this doesn't turn into a passion piece for the refugees. No matter how horrible the things are that you may describe in an article, the article must be written in a neutral format that doesn't show favor for either side. Any words that may be seen as inherently non-neutral must be clearly attributed to a specific person or outlet. Also, you need to create in-line citations in the article to show exactly which source is backing up which claim so it can be verified.
Let me know if you have any questions! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:27, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

I am wondering if you would please look over the proposed Wikipedia entry in my sandbox for any Wikipedia-fluency related issues. I started this entry from scratch and this is my first experience editing and or creating a Wikipedia page. As well, I was hoping to add an image of the manifesto/book cover, or of the author holding a copy of the manifeso, but have been able to find any free-source images fitting this description - do you have any suggestions for other sources or other image ideas?

Any and all feedback is very much appreciated!

Need help request from Splacanica (talk)

Hello.

I need help with the "Draft" section of the group sandbox "Dec150". Can you look over the quality of this section, its accuracy, authorship, and proper sourcing? For the end of the "Scalar Implicature" section in the "Draft" section, I need to add the same citation as [3] but I am not sure how to add this. This is why on the bottom you'll see that [3] and [4] are the same source. Thank you so much for all of your help!

--Splacanica (talk) 16:25, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Splacanica. With the sourcing, make sure that the claims in the article are explicitly made in the source material. This also extends to the examples given, so rather than list specific examples I'd make the content more general or use an example in the source material, stating something along the lines of "In an example given by Thomas Holtgraves..." or "Examples of this include giving more information than is needed in a conversation." (I prefer the ones like you posted, but I also wanted to let you know about the other option.) The issue here is that the example and explanation as to how the example works can be seen as original research.
I'd also recommend that you list some of the maxims at the end of the first sentence in the conversational implicatures section. This can help make it a bit clearer for people coming in without a really good grasp on the topics.
Also, avoid using class notes. These are generally not seen as reliable on Wikipedia because the site requires a fairly rigorous editorial process that classroom notes typically don't receive. Reasons for this include that they're not written and reviewed for any audience outside of the classroom, as well as that these notes are rarely used in academic or scholarly papers as an authoritative source.
I've done a little editing to the draft as far as markup language goes (ie, numbers and such) and I've also removed the signature from the sections. I hope that doesn't mess you up any - it's just that live articles won't contain this. You can re-add it, of course, just make sure that it's not there when it moves live. Other than that, this looks good. I like that you're adding definitions to the section - those are always helpful and it looks like the conversational section doesn't really have a clear definition in it. Hi Shalor, thank you so much for reviewing the article and giving this advice! Splacanica (talk) 15:21, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for taking it on. You're right that it does still need more work, but enough work has been done to address the reasons why I originally listed it for deletion — so I've withdrawn the AFD nomination. Thanks again! Bearcat (talk) 13:45, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

My pleasure. I do recognize that some admins get a little bit too trigger-happy with the speedy deletion function — but in principle if there's a potentially valid notability claim being made in an article, then the matter of whether the sourcing is solid or not isn't actually a speedy criterion in and of itself, and instead we have to go to AFD precisely so that there's at least a full week of opportunity to fix the problem. And, of course, some people take the AFD nomination as a personal affront, and either lose motivation or start getting disruptive in a misguided attempt at revenge. So it's always nice to see somebody take the nomination in good faith and work constructively to improve the article — that's always a very welcome, winning outcome to an AFD. Need Help Request User SelinaLee

Hello, I'm in the Topography of Rome Spring 2018 class. I am wondering how to insert a location map and/ or sidebar box into an article? The Italian version of my article (https://it.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ipogeo_di_Vibia&oldid=87500971) has useful ones and I would like to include that in the English version which I am creating (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:SelinaLee/Hypogeum_of_Vibia#References).

I am also curious what to do when you can't find many photos of your monument with reliable sources. I have found one photo (the one on the Italian page) which has no link to its proper site anymore. Do I have to look elsewhere?

Thank you! SelinaLee (talk) 01:42, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi SelinaLee! With the infobox, that infobox can be found at Template:Infobox ancient site, however I've gone ahead and put some of this together for you and placed it on your draft. The way to create the map in the infobox is by putting the coordinates in the proper field - I used the coordinates you already had in your draft for this. As far as images go, that can be tricky. You can try searching with the Creative Commons image search, however with that always make sure to double check the image's license if you find anything. If there's no license on it, assume that it's not usable. With images that do have licenses listed, compare them against the list here. While the page states that it's focused on Flickr images, the guideline for what can be uploaded can be applied to images taken from elsewhere as well. Since you're interested in images, make sure that you take this training on uploading images and other media - it will really be helpful. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:18, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

I have come across a lot of Wiki Ed student editors (in AfD's, copyright issues, etc.) recently, and I was wondering if there's any volunteering I could do to help out with Wiki Ed. Thanks, Vermont | reply here 22:23, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

From a lack of response, I'd assume you're not open to volunteers helping? Vermont | reply here 00:26, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Jasmine.tsui (talk)

Hello.

I need help with citing sources. What if one of my sources cited another source and I'm using that information, but never read the article. Which article should I cite? Also, how do you edit the citation you originally wrote? Thanks for your time!

--Jasmine.tsui (talk) 22:55, 8 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Jasmine.tsui! Ideally you'd go with the best source of the two, which in this case looks like it'd probably be the one you haven't read. However if you're unable to access that source it should be OK to use the one that you're read. Just make sure that the source is reliable. Out of curiosity, which sources are these? As far as editing citations go, you should be able to edit the citation by clicking on it while in edit mode with VisualEditor. The source should have a box pop up with an edit button - clicking that will allow you to edit the citation. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:19, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

I'm currently editing the elder abuse page and I'm just confused on how much to add and what will suffice. I want the full amount of points for my article however, I'm afraid because I'm confused on if I'm adding the correct info or just enough in general. can someone please help.

Need help request - Rewrite completed - please review!

Hi Shalor,

Thank you for your previous feedback. I have done a full rewrite, removed all original research (I think) and am ready for a re-review by you! I have taken your feedback into consideration and hope to have produced an unbiased work with independent sources.

Thank you again for your time!

--Desireemaxine94 (talk) 02:29, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Desireemaxine94, I made some tweaks and added a bit of a reception section, but I think that overall the article looks great! I think that you've done an excellent job laying out what this is and showing what the author is trying to impart to the reader. Good job! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:46, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Nthati12 (talk)

Hi Shalor!

I was wondering if you would be able to check the draft I have been working on in my sandbox for Samantha Futerman's page? If there is anything I should add or edit, please let me know!

Thank you, Nthati12 (talk) 00:50, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Nthati12, the content looked OK - I did remove the IMDb links, as those aren't considered to be reliable sources on Wikipedia because anyone can edit the site. I also removed some extra information, specifically the information about the Rotten Tomatoes rating and the individual actors in the Memoirs movie. Those are a little bit too specific for the article. I think that this should be OK to add to the live article. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:17, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Help needed in regards to your message

Hello --

I recently received a message from you about a copyright infringement on the text I added to the article "Participatory Budgeting".

I am a bit confused because the source that you mention about me having used against copyrights is something I have not seen before. I used another source for the infomation.

Can you point out the exact lines/paragraph that I am plagiarizing so I can fix it immediately? Thank you.

Article

This article already has a lot of info, however, I added a few bullet points and I'm thinking about adding a section specifically on elder abuse in nursing homes but I wasn't sure if that would suffice — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shenajamison (talkcontribs) 19:40, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Shenajamison: I've merged your information into the section on types, as nursing home abuse is covered under institutional abuse and as such, wouldn't really need its own section per se - at least not in the main article on elder abuse. There is a section in the institutional abuse article that deals with abuse of older adults (Institutional_abuse#Abuse_of_older_adults) and I think it would be an excellent idea to work on this section and expand it further. My only note would be to make sure that you're careful to avoid opinion and emotion terms, like unfortunately and sadly. While I doubt that any rational human being would disagree with the statements, the material needs to be written as neutrally as possible.
I think that the listing of specific signs of elder abuse was a good addition and expansion to the section on warning signs. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:44, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Article help

Hi Shalor!

I followed your advice and added more specific information relating to the Relf sisters to my 'Involuntary Sterilization of African American Women' and 'Involuntary Sterilization of Mentally Disabled' sections. Can you look over my article and make sure it looks good? And I also have not been able to find any information on the Relf sisters on where they are today. My professor hasn't found anything either.

Thank you! Menright01 (talk) 20:48, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Menright01

  • Hi Menright01 - I've rearranged the content a little and formatted it so that if you're ready, the page can be moved and retitled without having to do any formatting tweaks. I think that you've done a good job here - let me know if you need any help moving the page! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:11, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Need help request from Delikitty (talk)

Hello Shalor,

I just made a draft of what I'd like to add to the wiki page Environmental Policy in China in the section "Expand wiki" in my sandbox. However, I'm confused about the following questions:

  • Should I add this update about Water Law to the "current law" section or the "Water resources" section as a complement?
  • Is the word "lax" in the first sentence in the impact section shown expressed personal sentimental tendencies?
  • Can I use the content from a website like "china news" as my citation? I feel like they are just a broadcast of Chinese news.

I appreciate your help!

--Delikitty (talk) 00:28, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Delikitty, Ian (Wiki Ed) is actually your content expert so he would give better advice in this area. As far as the word lax goes, that's a good point - it probably wouldn't hurt to rephrase this somehow or to attribute the statement to a specific person or organization, like "So-and-so has stated that...". Attribution isn't a cure-all, but it can help resolve issues with opinion statements. With China News, you're correct in that this wouldn't be the best source to use because it's state owned, which means that it would operate with a bias. In general news sources are often not the best possible sources for science related topics, as many of them tend to write reaction or opinion pieces to events or they can just summarize things they see in other media sources, which may not have done due diligence with fact checking. A great example of how the news system can fail at reporting is the moment when CNN reported that Ryan Lanza was the Sandy Hook shooter... only for it to be that it was Adam Lanza. It was corrected relatively quickly, but not quickly enough to prevent other media outlets from jumping on this and reporting it on their own stories. There's no guarantee that any one source will be infallible, but academic and scholarly sources tend to have a stronger editorial and peer-review process. With the water law update, I'll leave that to Ian. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:47, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Need help jyoung01

Hi Shalor, I emailed you previously about my article titled Dorinda Moreno. I moved it to the mainspace and just received a notification that someone wants it to be deleted. I'm new to wikipedia and wonder what I should/can do about it. I looked into contesting its deletion, but I cannot find the link to do so. Our articles are due this Thursday, April 10 and I am unsure what to do. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Need help request from Arose01 (talk)

Hello.

I do not necessarily need help with anything, but I was wondering if you would please take the time to read my draft of my article and give me feedbakc so that I can revise it and make it stronger. Thank you so much!

--Arose01 (talk) 03:05, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Arose01 - one of the main things I want to caution you about is tone. For example, I edited the lead section to remove "In addition to being a mother, grandmother, and wife" as this is something that's very commonly used in promotional press materials. I would also recommend adding more sourcing that focuses on Hawley in specific. There are a lot of sources that mention her in relation to OBOS, but she's not really the main focus of the piece - OBOS is. You also have a lot of primary sources - while these can absolutely be used as sourcing to back up basic details, they can't really show notability. Some of these are a little tricky - for example, this bio for Hawley at the Jewish Women's Archive is an independent reliable source, whereas this would be seen as primary source since it's a statement by Hawley herself.
