Arthur Gould

Seems like a decent plan. There are some wording changes needed but if you think it has a shot at FA then I accept your opinion. I've never pushed an article to FA before but I'm happy to help in anyway I can. Cheers FruitMonkey (talk) 14:24, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Anytime I find anything on Gould the first think I look for is evidence of when he played for the Trojans and I assume Hampshire County while he was in the area. Lots of books state that he played for the team, just not the dates. I have found this here on the Trojans site, which states he ended his career with the team. Which sounds a trifle odd, as after 'The Gould Affair' he agreed to retire from rugby and the RFU would have gone for his throat if he played again. Also with a nice new home in Newport and a job for life why move to Southampton. Sounds more likely that he may have played for Southampton while waiting in the area for a boat to take him to a job abroad. Then again here is a newspaper article claiming Gould played for Bristol after the affair, and this is the first time I have hears this story. I'll keep looking but there is little info out there as to dates. Cheers FruitMonkey (talk) 20:43, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Request for peer review

Hi Shudde,

I saw your name listed as a volunteer for peer review - particularly for articles related to sports. We are working on expanding the article on Swedish footballer Emilia Appelqvist to ensure it is not deleted and also to improve the article to a higher assessment class. Would you be willing to take a look at the article and provide feedback? Thank you. Hmlarson (talk) 16:55, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Looks like the article will survive AfD – unless there is a dramatic shift to delete votes that is. If you open a formal peer review once the AfD is closed then give me a ping and I'll add something. - Shudde talk 03:22, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Canterbury Rugby Football Union, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Ashburton and Southland (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Dave Gallaher

Thank you for the comments about my work on the above article. I was reading a library book on him and was surprised at how short the article was on him at Wikipedia. Considering his importance to NZers and also how in his forties he had volunteered to serve in WWI, I decided to expand the article. I thought I had put enough references in the article, but I will relook at it. Regards John — Preceding unsigned comment added by John Prattley (talkcontribs) 03:57, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

O'Gara review

Hello and thanks for taking the time to review the Ronan O'Gara article but I think you are being a bit too strict on some things like the references. I know your an experienced at reviewing rugby articles but it's impractical to ask me to get a source for an Irish rugby game played in the 1990's. The match I am talking about is O'Gara's debut against Connacht in 1999. You have asked for a source that said it was his debut but I have searched for an hour and there is none. Is it not sufficient enough that it's the earliest match that you will find O'Gara lining out for Munster? All I ask is you please don't fail it for something I can't possibly fix. Tomh903 (talk) 11:40, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but verifiability is a very strict criteria for a good article. If something can't be verified, then it really shouldn't be included. Just leave that statement for now (maybe add a {{citation needed}} tag to it so I/you remember that it's not referenced yet), and I'll see if I can find a source. There were a lot of statements that were not supported by the sources provided, and the criteria doesn't allow exemptions for material that is difficult to source. Try to sort everything else out, and leave that statement for now. I'm sure a reference exists, it's just a matter of finding one. - Shudde talk 12:03, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Re:New Zealand national rugby union team

I understand not useing the flag icons, but I don't think it is necessary to add thier ITM Club, usually every national rugby union has the more professinal club listed, i.e the Super Rugby team. I also think the Caps Updated should be placed in bold at the top with the who the coach is.Rugby.change (talk) 23:29, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Paul Henderson at FAC

Hi Shudde! Earlier this year, you were kind enough to perform a peer review of the Paul Henderson article. I've listed it at FAC, however the reviews seem to have stalled. I was hoping, if you had the time and inclination, that you would be willing to give it another look and add any further comments you may have. Cheers! Resolute 23:19, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply! I can totally understand busy, and no worries if you don't get a chance. Thanks! Resolute 00:21, 13 November 2013 (UTC)

Monkey on my back

Hi Shudde. A peer review sounds good. I've added a page number to footnote b, so hopefully that should solidify that one. But the 1958 book you mention is actually the physical copy of cite 8, the Welsh Biography online. It was first published as "The Dictionary of Welsh Biography Down to 1940", with the editors supplied. It was then turned into an electronic format which we are citing from with Gould's specific article in the the 1958 Biography written by Molewyn Williams. Not sure how you would circle that square. I do own a physical copy of the actual book (as you do) if you need further details. Your constant servant. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:42, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:01, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Gould

If you are not in a rush, I can have a look at this in a day or two. I have a few things to do on WP first, and real life is vaguely chaotic at the moment, so it might not be until next week. Sarastro1 (talk) 20:14, 18 December 2013 (UTC)

FAC request

Hi, can you comment on this nomination when you find time. Vensatry (Ping me) 12:55, 22 December 2013 (UTC)

One revert isn't an edit war

I think its reasonable to revert once with an explanation in the edit summary before serious Talk has to be entered into. I agree that the section is a bit dodgy and I wasn't especially enamoured of the material myself, but I thought the reasoning for deleting it was worse, because it went purely on an opinion of notability, and when comparing it to the rest of the items the notability or otherwise was not at all cut and dried, so I was looking for better reasoning.Mdw0 (talk) 10:42, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

I never said it was an edit war, just that I wouldn't start one. I've reverted twice now, so any further from me will be dangerous territory. Not cut and dried like you said which is why I hate communicating via edit summaries. -- Shudde talk 10:53, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for noticing my work - I appreciate it. Let me know which articles you'd think worthy of nomination - Craven, Engelbrecht, M du Plessis? DocDee (talk) 04:14, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Good suggestions - will work at it and submit. I appreciate your thoughtful advice. DocDee (talk) 18:59, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

Alfred Pullin

Do you have any sources/details about Alfred Pullin (known as "Old Ebor") who wrote about rugby from around 1890 - 1930 in the Yorkshire Post? He was quite famous in his time, but details of his rugby writing (as opposed to his cricket writing, about which quite a lot exists) seem scarce. I've asked at the rugby pages too, but thought I'd ask you directly as he covers your "period" of rugby. Sort of... Hope all is well, and I should finish with the PR on Gould in the next few days. Sarastro1 (talk) 21:07, 3 January 2014 (UTC)

Gould and Stoddart

Sorry for the delay on Gould, I'd have hoped to finish by now but it got away from me a bit. On a related note, I noticed reading the 1890-93 section that a few bits rang a bell, and then I noticed a familiar name. Andrew Stoddart is possibly coming up on my cricket "list", and I recognised a match from his biography. Now, there is a lot of stuff out there on his cricket, and his biography by David Frith covers his rugby career pretty thoroughly, but I wondered is there an overview of his rugby career anywhere? Or anything that states from a rugby perspective if he was any good or not? Any help appreciated, but no problem if you don't have anything. Sarastro1 (talk) 22:12, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind me jumping in a little on this one. Stoddart is fairly well-covered in Alan Gibson's great book "The Cricket Captains of England" and he quotes from an 1892 book by someone called Arthur Budd who described him as "the most agile and finished wing three-quarter who has done service for England" and Gibson calls him "undoubtedly one of the outstanding players of his brief period". I can't find anything which really gives an overview though in any of my rugby books here. --Bcp67 (talk) 12:19, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Cheers. I've got a copy of Gibson (one of my favourite cricket books, incidentally), but I never entirely trust cricket writers when they talk about someone's ability in another sport. So I kind of need a "rugby voice" if possible. Thanks for checking. Sarastro1 (talk) 18:35, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Hopefully Mr Shudde doesn't mind us hijacking his talk! Great writer, Alan Gibson, and very much associated with the west, Bristol & Somerset etc - he was also a rugby commentator for the BBC, so I reckon he was on firmish ground with his rugby knowledge. All the best with the article! --Bcp67 (talk) 19:31, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply. As luck would have it, I was given Sean Fagan's book on the 1888 British Isles for Christmas, and the first chapter is about Stoddart! The book has its flaws, but there is quite a lot there on Stoddart. He was definitely one of the most talented players of his time and was the star of that 1888 tour. There are probably some other sources I can dig up, and I'd be happy to provide what I can to the article. BTW I looked into Pullin but didn't have much luck -- I replied regarding that at WP:RU. -- Shudde talk 00:41, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
I saw the Pullin reply on RU, and thanks for looking. As for Stoddart, I think he might be my next one once I've done a bit of catch-up on other articles I need to finish off. I'm not too sure when it will be, but I've plenty to start me off (and Frith's biography is pretty exhaustive). Once I've got down the bones, I'll ping you to see if we can flesh out the rugby part. Cheers. Sarastro1 (talk) 18:35, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Gould source

Thanks for the email. Yes, it's a good source especially on his family. We need to make sure we aren't just repeating ourselves as the vast bulk of the early information is taken from books we are already using, mainly Smith's work on the history of the WRU. Where is the information from by the way? FruitMonkey (talk) 08:17, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

I'm happy to go for it, especially after the good work you have put into it. I'm also keen to go through the process as I want to try and get Dylan Thomas to that status for his 100th birthday. Cheers, FruitMonkey (talk) 18:56, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
I've spotted a few errors here and there, so I'll keep reading and re-reading to remove any silly mistakes, but in the mean-time I found and added this image today, I thought you may like it. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:08, 22 February 2014 (UTC)
We should keep the original image as it sums up the affair in a better light. Thanks for sorting out the cites, but they needed to be upgraded as there were missing words where I changed text. FruitMonkey (talk) 23:44, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Books & Bytes New Years Double Issue

Volume 1 Issue 3, December/January 2013

(Sign up for monthly delivery)

Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!

The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:

Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors

March 2014 GAN Backlog Drive

It's that time again! Starting on March 1, there will be another GAN Backlog Drive! There will be several changes compared to previous drives:

  • This drive will introduce a new component to it; a point system. In a nutshell, older nominations are worth more points than newer nominations. The top 3 participants who have the points will be awarded the Golden, Silver, or Bronze Wikipedia Puzzle Piece Trophy, respectively.
  • Unlike the December 2013 Backlog Drive, earning an additional barnstar if you reached your goal has been removed.
  • The allowance to have insufficient reviews has been lowered to 2 before being disqualified.
  • An exception to the rule that all reviews must be completed before the deadline has been created.

Also, something that I thought I would share with all of you is that we raised $20.88 (USD) for the WMF in the December 2013 drive. It may not sound like a lot but considering that that was raised just because we reviewed articles, I would say that's pretty good! With that success, pledges can be made for the upcoming drive if you wish.

More info regarding the drive and full descriptions regarding the changes to this drive can be found on the the drive page. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message on the drive talk page.

I look forward to your participation and hope that because of it, some day the backlog will be gone!

FA congratulations

Just a quick note to congratulate you on the promotion of Arthur Gould (rugby union) to FA status recently. If you would like to see this (or any other FA) appear as "Today's featured article" soon, please nominate it at the requests page; if you'd like to see an FA on a particular date in the next year or so, please add it to the "pending" list. In the absence of a request, the article may end up being picked at any time (although with 1,307 articles in Category:Featured articles that have not appeared on the main page at present, there's no telling how long – or short! – the wait might be).
You (and your talk-page stalkers) may also be interested to hear that there have been some changes at the TFA requests page recently. Nominators no longer need to calculate how many "points" an article has, the instructions have been simplified, and there's a new nomination system using templates based on those used for DYK suggestions. Please consider nominating another article, or commenting on an existing nomination, and leaving some feedback on your experience. If you'd got any TFA-related questions or problems, please let me know. BencherliteTalk 13:45, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

The article Ian Smith (Scottish rugby player born 1903) you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Ian Smith (Scottish rugby player born 1903) for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already been on the main page as an "In the news" or "Did you know" item, you can nominate it to appear in Did you know. Prolems with DYK article candidate fixed (I hope)

Hi: Im the nominator for the Torrey C. Brown DYK article and am responding to your concerns. I corrected the paraphrasing issues, removed the questioned photo and used the alternate hook that was suggested. Thanks for your help! «Marylandstater» «reply» 13:12, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

George Aitken (rugby union)

Thank you for your kind comment on the Ian Smith GA discussion - nice to know that my contributions have been appreciated. I've just reviewed the George Aitken article, my first DYK review for a fair while. Interesting article about a player with a varied career - I've passed it for DYK and hopefully we'll see George on the main page fairly soon. I've no doubt you are pretty good at assessing an article for DYK anyway, but if you ever want someone to have a pre-check before nominating I'm happy to do so, I've done a reasonable amount of DYK reviewing in my time! --Bcp67 (talk) 13:10, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Cheers

Thanks for the star Shudde. By the way, you won't really know this but the reason I have continued on Wikipedia so long is down to you. You DYK'ed one of my articles several years ago and that gave me the buzz. I switched from tampering to creating the next day. You the man. FruitMonkey (talk) 22:27, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Main Page appearance: Thomas Ellison

This is a note to let the main editors of Thomas Ellison know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on May 20, 2014. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at present, please ask Bencherlite (talk · contribs). You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/May 20, 2014. If it needs tweaking, or if it needs rewording to match improvements to the article between now and its main page appearance, please edit it, following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Thomas Ellison (c. 1867 – 1904) was a New Zealand rugby union player. After being educated at Te Aute College, where he was introduced to rugby, Ellison moved to Wellington, and played for the Poneke Football Club. He was subsequently selected to represent Wellington province, and was later recruited into Joe Warbrick's privately organised 1888–89 New Zealand Native football team. Ellison scored 113 points and 43 tries on their epic 107-match tour of the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand. On his return he continued with Poneke and Wellington, and from 1892 started to refine and popularise the wing-forward system of play, which was a vital element of New Zealand rugby's style until 1932. At the first New Zealand Rugby Football Union annual general meeting in 1893, he proposed that the playing colours of the New Zealand side should be predominantly black with a silver fern—a playing strip that inspired the team’s name of All Blacks. That year he captained the New Zealand side on their tour of Australia. He retired from playing afterwards, but continued as a coach and administrator. Ellison was the author of a coaching manual, The Art of Rugby Football, published in 1902. (Full article...)

Thank you. UcuchaBot (talk) 23:01, 6 May 2014 (UTC)

Precious

"as comprehensive as any available"
Thank you for quality articles such as Thomas Ellison, one of the first Māori Rugby players, an article "as comprehensive a coverage of his life—and especially his endeavours and influence on rugby—as any available", for your work in the GA process, for promoting neglected areas "that maybe suffer due to systemic bias", - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

Thanks for the info on this. I shall join, although my focus is still fairly narrow at this stage. Is TheMightyPeanut not also a participant? -- Ham105 (talk)
