María Luisa Dehesa Gómez Farías has been nominated for Did You Know
Hello, SusunW. María Luisa Dehesa Gómez Farías, an article you either created or significantly contributed to, has been nominated to appear on Wikipedia's Main Page as part of Did you know . You can see the hook and the discussion here. You are welcome to participate! Thank you. APersonBot (talk!) 03:23, 16 October 2015 (UTC) |
Hi, I saw your new article and edited it a little. I'm wondering if you'd like me to nominate it for DYK? If so, would you be able to add another sentence or two to push up the character count, which is presently holding at 1513? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:13, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- That'd be cool. Let me see what I can do. I'm currently working on one that I also think will be good, first African American female to be licensed in the US. Let me save her and I'll look at Dehesa again. SusunW (talk) 22:28, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yoninah I get 1771 now. Think that is long enough? SusunW (talk) 22:47, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- Definitely. Thanks! Yoninah (talk) 22:49, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yoninah I finished Beverly Loraine Greene. It's over 2000 chars. If you think its long enough I think it is worthy. I gotta get off of here. It's my 31st wedding anniversary and we are off to celebrate. Thanks for your help with these :) SusunW (talk) 23:18, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
- My pleasure. And congratulations on your wonderful milestone! Yoninah (talk) 00:00, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yay! I love the hook on Greene Yoninah I told you she was worthy :). And thank you dinner was divine! SusunW (talk) 03:36, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Barnstar!
The Original Barnstar | ||
That's a fine job you've done to the Beatriz del Cueto article!! Sionk (talk) 18:03, 16 October 2015 (UTC) |
Sionk Thanks! Research is my specialty. Specifically on women. They are hard to find, having spent most of our history as footnotes. If we are able to uncover notability, I can usually dig out sources, but it really is a matter of inputting every conceivable variation you can think of for their name. Thank goodness we have moved past the Mrs. John Doe phase, as that is virtually impossible to determine which wife of which John. Thank you for posting on the page or I would not have known the article existed. :) SusunW (talk) 18:11, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- I wonder if there is DYK potential. It must have been expanded at least 500%. Maybe "Did you know ...that architect Beatriz del Cueto restored 15 lighthouses on Puerto Rico?" Sionk (talk) 18:22, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- Sionk That would be cool but I would want Ipigott or someone who really speaks Spanish to make sure. There were 15 lighthouses. I wasn't sure if she restored one of the 15 or all of them. The article talks about the differences in shapes and materials, so I thought it was all 15 but one can never be too sure when using only translation software. If Ian cannot check it, you could always do it on the Church and just stick in a bit that it is the 2nd oldest church in the Americas. I live where the first oldest one is :) SusunW (talk) 18:28, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- And where exactly is that, SusunW, and what is the name of the church? I thought it was in La Antigua in Mexico (corresponding to the name) but that's quite a way from Belize. (Or have you moved?) I'll take a closer look at the lighthouses tomorrow but I fully agree with Sionk, both on the well-deserved barnstar and for the need to take the article to DYK (or more).--Ipigott (talk) 19:58, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- Ipigott Thanks! Well, now here they claim that it is Cathedral de San Ildefonso. We moved north from Belize about 5 years ago. I checked the 5x expansion. We were at 590 before you touched it Sionk thus, we are about 450 characters short, but that is easily expanded. I was very spare in my gleanings of the articles. I cannot decide 15 lighthouses is huge, but the radar thing pretty interesting too. They actually ran the device over all of the walls, floors, etc. But I thought mayhaps those deserved to be in an article about the building, rather than the architect. Clearly there is a lot of expansion that could be done. :) SusunW (talk) 20:20, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

- Yes, they certainly say that Mérida is the oldest cathedral but the church in La Antigua probably goes back to the early 1520s. Mérida was founded in the 1540s. OK, to turn to lighthouses, I've now read through the Spanish source. It looks to me as if Beatriz del Cuento may have been involved in the restoration of some but certainly not all of the Puerto Rican lighthouses, her major project being the one in Las Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo (which is discussed in the source). There's also information in English here with lots of additional links if we are really going to research this aspect. For the DYK, why not just say "... restored one of Puerto Rico's most historic lighthouses"?--Ipigott (talk) 20:32, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- On the oldest church in the Americas, I've just found Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor which may take the prize. Might be interesting to investigate.--Ipigott (talk) 20:48, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Ipigott: Actually that makes sense since Santo Domingo is the oldest habitation. I will expand Beatriz del Cueto tomorrow so we are at 5x expansion. What do you think of this? It is exactly 200 chars "... that Beatriz del Cueto restored antique water channels for the bathrooms at the Las Cabezas de San Juan lighthouse in Fajardo and used ground-penetrating radar to assess damage of San José Church?"
- On the oldest church in the Americas, I've just found Basilica Cathedral of Santa María la Menor which may take the prize. Might be interesting to investigate.--Ipigott (talk) 20:48, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
- Looks fine to me. If you're too close to the max no of chars, you could use the English name of the lighthouse and perhaps say "...that Beatriz del Cueto restored the original bathroom water supply channels at Cape San Juan Lighthouse and used ground-penetrating radar to assess damage at San José Church?" Maybe you could include images of the lighthouse and church in the article.--Ipigott (talk) 07:19, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- As far as the length goes, I count c.807 characters (incl spaces) before I added the Henry Klumb Award (on 16 Oct), and c.4928 (not including the list of works) as of now (17 Oct). That is clearly more than 5-fold expansion, from what I can see. But SusunW is correct to point out that we need to be confident of the fact(s) that form the basis of the DYK hook.
- I'd be a little bit concerned now that the DYK reviewers might think we are 'gaming the system' by adding too much information about the lighthouses (this is strictly speaking not about del Cueto). If I was a neutral, non-involved reviewer that reviewing at the article, that would be my exact conclusion. Sorry, when I suggested a DYK nomination I (incorrectly) remembered the stub article being shorter than it actually was! Sionk (talk) 10:26, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- Me again! We only need the article to have been expanded 807x5=4035 characters/spaces. So there is a leeway of almost 900 characters. Therefore there is scope to remove some of the padding about the lighthouses. Remember when you are thinking about a hook it needs to be 'hook-y' rather than to dry or technical. Sionk (talk) 10:36, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- How about "...that conservation architect Beatriz del Cueto restored Puerto Rico's oldest lighthouse, Las Cabezas de San Juan?" Sionk (talk) 10:45, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- Sionk, that totally works. Are you going to nominate it for us or do you want me to do it? SusunW (talk) 14:36, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm happy to do it, though unfortunately I'll (undeservedly) have to take some of the credit for the expansion, so the count begins from before 16 Oct ;) Sionk (talk) 18:08, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- sionk not remotely undeservedly and both you and Ian should have credits. If you hadn't found the file, none of us would likely have worked on it. :) SusunW (talk) 18:12, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Followup on duplication of Beverly Loraine Greene
Hi, just wanted to follow up on this weird duplication. Apparently, the misspelled name Beverly Lorraine Greene appeared in the Women in Architecture editathon lists (see here and here), and some of our WiR editors worked on that page. In the future, before you post a new article, it's a good idea to first search for the article name on Wikipedia, so you can add links to where it appears in other articles before you create the page. (If you do this after you create the page, the search will only take you to the page you've created.) This pre-check would have turned up the duplicate page for you, at which point you could have just gone ahead and edited/expanded it with your references. Best, Yoninah (talk) 19:41, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Yoninah I usually run a check on the name and a google check to make sure someone else hasn't started it. Never occurred to me to check name misspellings in Wikipedia. *sigh* I always check multiple variations of names on Google because that is a huge issue for identifying women. Maybe I'll do a surname search on the editathon list before I start the next one. SusunW (talk) 19:49, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
- I don't mean to have you look for misspellings. If you had searched for Beverly Loraine Greene, the other Greene page would have likely shown up. Yoninah (talk) 20:42, 18 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yoninah I so want to say that ... Lyubow Demeetriyevna Oosava and other architecture students were required during WWII to build bombs? But, is that technically correct? Processing them, packaging them, working in a munitions factory? SusunW (talk) 01:13, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Gnoming
I should have offered earlier... Sometimes I want to work on wiki but I don't feel like writing a new article or other options. I actually like some gnomish work from time to time because I like to feel useful. Can I help you with gnoming now, or in the future? Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:12, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- Megalibrarygirl You already help a lot with the lists. But what I am doing is time consuming and tedious. Basically I copy the stuff from the Alexbot list, clean it up, check it for whether it is woman related, check to see if it has a woman related WikiProject, deprod if required, add categories, and then move it to the metrics list. It requires you looking at every single file that comes in the batch. I try to do the Womn's History batch daily as it is long. The other 3 I do about every 3-5 days. I'll finish out this month, but if you want to do it next month, I would love a break from it. Rosie did it 2 months, I have done the next two. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women/Women in Red/Metrics SusunW (talk) 16:23, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- I can help with that. I'll take the next two months: November and Dec. I actually like doing that sort of thing. :) Megalibrarygirl (talk) 16:36, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- Megalibrarygirl You are amazing. I get sidetracked trying to fix them and have to remind myself to move on. LOL SusunW (talk) 17:00, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Susun, can you translate the critical commentary from Spanish wiki?♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:08, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld sorry, been hip deep in alligators this morning. Looks like you managed to save it, which is great because the Spanish translation is non-sensical to me. Can't make heads nor tails of it and am afraid that the translation would not help the file. SusunW (talk) 18:51, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Claudia Nechayeva
If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Claudia Nechayeva requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. DGG ( talk ) 08:48, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- You may want to see [[W{:MILHIS]] for assistance. DGG ( talk ) 08:49, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- DGG This is utter nonsense. Of course I stated why she was notable. The standard is NOT MILHIS it is GNG. And you have sneakily gone around the system by proposing a speedy. This deletionist culture is ridiculous, IMO. Improvement should be the key. There are sources in multiple languages. Further, the tag you put on the file wasn't even on it long enough to allow anyone to respond. "No indication of importance" is not remotely true. First, she has articles on other wikis lending some claim to notability. Secondly, she was part of the USSR 586 Fighter Aviation Regiment an all-female squad which actually put its pilots into battle, unlike the US or UK. If you work the system so that there isn't even reasonable debate, I guess we will soon have zero articles. SusunW (talk) 15:20, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- You may want to see [[W{:MILHIS]] for assistance. DGG ( talk ) 08:49, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- Proposing a speedy is not bypassing the system, but part of the system, one of the 3 options for deletion. It requires both the nominator and an administrator to find the deletion obvious. I examined both the present article, and the previous more extensive version deleted as copyvio to see if there was any chance of having sufficient material. The references in the present version are to 1/a memorial site, http://pomnipro.ru, which describes itself as " a free memorial and virtual memory book ... for those who want to save for years to come light the eternal memory... of loved ones." and 2/ an online version of a book, which mentions her in one line as having been shot down on 17 Sept. 1942. The first is not a reliable source, because it is apparently written by anyone who cares to contribute, and the second is a mere mention. The ruWP gives one potential reliable source in a published book, but it's a 47 p book on women WWII Soviet pilots, so it is most unlikely to offer significant coverage of her, considering she did nothing significant. Examining the English and Russian materials, she was shot down in an early sortie, and never downed a single enemy. See our policy: WP:MEMORIAL/
- There were many Soviet women pilots with strikingly notable records, either during the war or afterwards, and those are the ones who should be included in an encycopedia. The easiest criterion to satisfy will be those who received a highest-level award such as Mariya Dolina.
- having an article in another WP is not a criterion for inclusion here, as eachWP has its own standards. Our experience is that many biographical articles from the ruWP have been deleted in the enWP. As for the frWP article, when I figure out how to propose it for deletion, I will. DGG ( talk ) 19:35, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- DGG We will not agree on this topic. The guideline you used to delete her is not an evaluation of notability, which you are now arguing. It is a guideline to evaluate whether she has a credible claim to notability.(The initial one, which had zero to do with my article was a copyvio and I have no clue who wrote it so it is irrelevant to this discussion) She had a claim to same and the proper venue to evaluate notability is AfD. I truly do not understand this culture of deletion. An encyclopedia with no articles, which seems to be the goal of some, is worthless. An encyclopedia which covers only those who everyone already knows about is equally worthless. Wikipedia is not about documenting the famous, it is a project designed to highlight notable people and events. I will never understand your position, of deleting files rather than trying to improve them, so I think further discussion is pointless. SusunW (talk) 20:01, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- However, as something positive, it occurs to me that it would be very appropriate to translate pages such as fr:586 IAP. Combination pages like that are very helpful--and they can lonk ddirectly to full articles on the ru orother WP. See the way I did it in the codefor this paragraph. DGG ( talk ) 20:02, 25 October 2015 (UTC) DGG ( talk ) 20:02, 25 October 2015 (UTC)
- DGG Great idea! Why don't you translate it? In the mean time, I am very busy with an architectural editathon. And for the record, {{ill|fr|586 IAP}} is a better notation, as it will give anyone who speaks the language a link and automatically change to a blue link if the article is ever created. - I could not add the list of her publications as translation was not clear. You may like to add the correct names of her books. Thanks. --Nvvchar. 14:27, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Nvvchar: I did think I would look at the translations. Did her name correction first. Spanish naming customs father's name is first and it is the surname. Mother's name is last and is not used except for identity unless mother's family is more notable. SusunW (talk) 14:33, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Nvvchar: I didn't translate the books. It's weird. The Ríos Garza book lists tons of publications, but none of them show up in WorldCat or on the web in her name. They appear to have been published under the auspices of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes but do not seem to give her credit. I don't know how I can include them as hers in that instance, though she was the director. At any rate, the book did have a list of projects which I added and more information on her schooling, which I also added. If you want to review it and make any final adjustments, I'll be glad to nominate it. Lovely working with you on her :) I was just about to send this and realized I had made a cardinal error by not searching under de Coronel. Found more publications. Thanks for participating in Women in architecture
Thank you for your participation in the Women in Architecture Virtual Edit-a-thon, 15–25 October 2015, sponsored by the Guggenheim Museum, and hosted by Women in Red. In addition to upgrades, we created about 170 new articles. Your contributions are appreciated! --Ipigott (talk) 15:50, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Ipigott and Rosiestep: I think it is safe to say it was one of our most successful yet. Truly enjoyed it. I can help prepare for the next one, Women in Religion, but don't know that I will be much help in creating articles. Not really my subject. SusunW (talk) 17:32, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- @SusunW: I agree. It was highly successful! If you'd like to create the meetup page for Women in Religion (it'll be our #5, I think), that would be wonderful. I just created Women Scientists as event #4 (see WiR talkpage... not linked anywhere else yet); it needs works, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:04, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- @Rosiestep and Ipigott: I THINK I managed to do it. LOL OMG, I am so not Wiki-technical. Please make any changes you think need to be done. SusunW (talk) 03:37, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for posting on my talk page. The truth is that you and many of the others on Women in Red inspire me. There's so many awesome people there that it just blows my mind and I want to be a part of that every day. :D Megalibrarygirl (talk) 14:27, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Susun. I was wondering if you could list all the red links on the WP:intertranswiki page for starting? Like Steiger and Cardinale the red links need to be filled, there's some very interesting ones in there I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:02, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, Susun, for drawing my attention to this article. I added a few lines and several references. I see it's now been saved. Let me know if you have similar problems in future. With all the gnoming you've been doing, you should not have to bother about deprodding too.--Ipigott (talk) 22:34, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- Ipigott I am very glad to turn that project over to Megalibrarygirl for the next two months, but it is how I found several really important folks that were prodded. Thanks for your help :) SusunW (talk) 22:38, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
Women in science
Unless there are several women in a particular discipline from a particular country, I should think you would be OK with the blanket category for now. Like "women anthropologists" and "Bolivian anthropologists". That being said, I should think we would have several articles about American women anthropologists, so that's a category that I'm sure could be created. Let me have a look in a few minutes when I'm done with this run of AWB. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:14, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: Thanks! I just figure we will have lots of articles coming out of the editathon. Feel free to do whatever you need to with the categories. You are much better at their classification than I am ;) SusunW (talk) 01:20, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- OK - I think a category for American women anthropologists will certainly be viable. I've created it, and am populating it now. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:32, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
- @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: Yay! you rock. You can see from the link I gave you to the editathon which others may also be viable. Again, thank you for your expertise. SusunW (talk) 01:36, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Anne B. Newman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page CDC. - I am not familiar with special Byelorussian - latin transliteration system if there is any? Just looking at it, I'd prefer her name written in English text as 'Usava', so's not to wander too far off from her real name, Усава; unless she herself explicitly preferred her name written in latin letters that way. If the latter is not the case, might you change the article's title and rest of it, where surname occurs? As approved in general cyrillic-latin transliteration rules. And if it feels necessary, to provide IPA phonetic pronunciation. Transcription.
- Btw, trying to find creator of this good article I stumbled on deletion story of English article about Клавдия Андреевна Нечаева, and did not understand a bit of their logic, unless there really is some copyright problem. But if it is ok for Russian Wikipedia, whay not then for English? - They should really remember, that English does not mean American - if the subject is not important enough for americans, it might be for rest of the world (unfamiliar term for most americans, I'm afraid), who all use English Wikipedia.BirgittaMTh (talk) 10:20, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
- BirgittaMTh Thank you for your kind words. To be honest, I don't speak Russian at all. I created the file as part of an editathon on women architects. Like you, I understand not only that there are many people who use English Wikipedia regardless of whether English is their first language and that there are non-English speaking subjects of articles that English-speakers want to know about. All that being said, the redlink used to create the article used the spelling Oosava. My understanding was that a Russian speaker had transcribed how the Cyrillic should be written. None of the documents I found on her were in English and the translator machines returned both Usava and Usova, thus I noted the variant in the article. I have no idea how it should appear. Perhaps Ipigott can confirm how the redlinks were derived. I have no issues with anyone renaming the page or making changes to it. I don't remotely know how to do a IPA phonetic pronunciation, but feel free to add whatever you would like to the article.
- As for Claudia Nechaeva the initial deletion was for a copyvio by the person who created it. I rewrote it but it was speedily deleted to get around discussion. The nominator claimed that there was no notability proven and I pointed out that was criteria for an AfD discussion, not a speedy. It didn't matter, because the file was gone. As don't speak Russian, finding RS that would stand up would the the difficult part, as the ones I used were what was on the French and Russian Wikipedias. SusunW (talk) 15:25, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
- I agree the common transliteration into English would be Usava. I'm not surprised your efforts on Claudia Nechaeva led to a rapid deletion. I had warned Pharos of the danger of simply listing names from the Russian and Belarusian wikis without checking on their notability. Still, it was a brave effort!--Ipigott (talk) 15:41, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
- I'm guessing then that we should move the page to the more common transliteration of Usava, but 1) I don't know how to do that and 2) I am thinking we should wait until it comes off of the front page? Ideas on how to accomplish that would be helpful @BirgittaMTh and Ipigott:. Again, I appreciate both of your input. Would that I had your skills with language. SusunW (talk) 16:32, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
- I've moved it to Lyubow Usava. I've deleted the patronym in accordance with common English usage. No problem with the DYK - there's a redirect.--Ipigott (talk) 16:43, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
