WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer   Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to   Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

 

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Yes. There is an article for List of The Sarah Jane Adventures episodes and indicidual serial pages such as Revenge of the Slitheen and Death of the Doctor so the main page is a parent article to all of those. The recirring/guest cast can be mentioned in those articles or in a prose format of the parent article. TheDoctorWho (talk) 20:40, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

It sucks not having access to iPlayer in America. The full episodes of Unleashed for TCORR and the 2023 specials are available for semi-cheap purchase on Amazon. I bought all four. I'm hoping they eventually had Series 14 to those as well, but the four that are on there weren't added until at least after Christmas (not sure of the exact date), so it may not be until after the series finishes airing. I'm also pretty confident that the Behind the Scenes videos on YouTube are cutdown versions of the full Unleashed episodes, but we're only getting one-third to one-half of the episode with those. Doctor Who - Rogue - Music

Hi there,

I understand that you deleted my reference to "Libertango" by Astor Piazzolla because you thought that the references weren't valid, however it does not change the fact that the music is in the episode.

If you watch the episode at around 20:50 and onwards while the Doctor and Rogue dance, you will hear a piece of music being played. It is the same as 3:40 in this performance - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MepPfI7ebMY - which is a performance of Libertango by Astor Piazzolla. I recognised it because there was a well known cover by Grace Jones in the 80's, which I first incorrectly referenced, however even though I cannot find a journalist who mentions it, the piece is unmistakably Libertango.

I don't really care but I would think that people who are as interested in Doctor Who as you seem to be would care to know a relevant fact about the episode. It is not as if all facts on Wikipedia are required to have a reference, and yes I possibly did overdo it with unreliable references because an earlier edit removed my edit for having no references, however one only has to listen to a few seconds of the episode and a few seconds of the relevant piece to realise that it is in fact the piece, regardless of whether a notable source has realised as such. It is probably that there are precious few references to any of the music in the episode and that the person who wrote the single article that does reference the other pieces mentioned was not alive in the 1980s and had no clue that the piece being played was in fact quite famous. This does not, however, change the fact that a simple listening to the piece with reference to the music in the episode demonstrates clearly that it is in fact the piece played.

As I said, I don't really care for petty edit wars, and this is about the most petty and pointless edit war ever and doesn't speak much for the character of those who are waging it, but the facts are undeniable. That clearly demonstrates a failing on the part of the two people who chose to bury an undeniable fact because they believe that facts are not important. It also demonstrates that Wikipedia lacks appropriate mechanisms for referencing pieces of music that work without a teenage journalist having to have knowledge of music before the year 2000.

So, if you actually care about facts, perhaps you could find a way to leave this fact in the article. I don't personally care that my edit that pointed to an undeniable fact was cut out, but you need to choose whether you care about facts at all. Your actions so far say otherwise. WikiCup 2024 July newsletter

The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.

The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:

So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Toymaker

Anyone wanting to learn more about the Toymaker will have to go read the serial page. In the future, if you don't like an added link then I would prefer to see the link edited to point to a better page (if it exists) instead of simply reverted. I believe that linking to an episode/serial when the text refers to the character would be a slight case of WP:EASTEREGG. If there is no character then there should be no link. You said it yourself, there is no "better page" so it was removed altogether. The only "better page" would be a character article. Not to mention, if EASTEREGG wasn't in play here, the fact that the Toymaker has appeared in more than one episode is more reason not to link to a specific serial. The Giggle that specific text references only occurred in "The Giggle" and not in "The Celestial Toymaker". TheDoctorWho (talk) 08:31, 14 July 2024 (UTC)

Doctor Who SDCC Panel response

Hi there, I appreciate your message letting me know what the truncated edit summary was supposed to say. Rather than 'rules lawyer' or pull out a bunch of different links to other WP policies or guidelines, let me try taking a different tack first of all:

What do you see happening after the SDCC panels occur? Will the article be updated to say 'The following panels happened and this exclusive news was revealed'? Fair enough if there's something notable - [name] chooses this panel to announce they're leaving, or the like. But what if no news is revealed, and "will appear on a panel" simply becomes "appeared on a panel"? Does this now mean we can list every convention and panel that people made appearances on?

That's why I didn't see anything notable about this information and removed it. It read, and reads, like a publicity announcement or cruft. I'm not going to press the issue too much, other than by possibly posting a version of the above on the article talk page, as SDCC will happen and be over soon. But I would be surprised if anything happens at the panels that justifies keeping them mentioned.

I hope that better explains my thinking. If you do wish me to pull out the bunch of different links that ultimately led me to using the one that following the links suggested to me was the most appropriate, I could do that yet XD best regards JustAnotherCompanion (talk) 18:22, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

Either way, yes. If exclusive news is revealed, we'll add it. If not, we'll just change it to past tense. People appearing on a convention/panel doesn't inherently make it notable, so no, we don't list every single one. That would be WP:INDISCRIMINATE. However, we should (and do) write about things that receive significant media coverage, such as the Doctor Who panel(s): [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], and [11] are all independent reliable sources that covered the information. There's also more beyond just those. If these sources weren't available, I wouldn't have added it because 1) it couldn't be proven, and 2) it wouldn't establish the notability.
One could make the same argument about anything else. "Gatwa and Gibson promoted the series in New York City; advertisements were streamed on billboards in Times Square, and interviews were featured on Good Morning America, ABC News and Late Night with Seth Meyers." What makes that statement notable? Do we cover every advertisement in NYC or every person who ends up on GMA? Of course not, there's no way we ever could. There are certain circumstances where it makes sense though, such as in an a section on an article that's specifically covering the promotion of a television series. By excluding it when there is such widespread international coverage, we would be failing our readers. TheDoctorWho (talk) 20:40, 16 July 2024 (UTC)

You know how much I always appreciate your work on these BB articles, but I really don't like the dash (-) in the HouseGuests table. I really think putting the Day underneath (with or without parentheses) really looks neater, and narrows the overall width of that table. Let me know what you think. Hello!

Welcome to the first regenerated issue of The Space-Time Telegraph, the official newsletter of WikiProject Doctor Who. We hope it finds you well in your safe travels across the Whoniverse! This newsletter was founded in 2008 and seemed to get lost in the time vortex quite quickly. Thanks to the Doctor dragging Sutekh through the time vortex and bringing life by bringing death to death (yeah... I'm a little confused too), it seems to have regenerated. The writing staff hopes to bring you future editions quarterly.
For this first edition, we have created an updated version of our mailing list that includes any active editors who previously had their usernames included in our participants list. If you do not wish to receive future editions, please remove your name from the mailing list. If you no longer wish to participate in the project, please also remove your name from the participants list.
I think that's enough about the newsletter for now. Let's dive into interesting things happening within the Doctor Who side of Wikipedia. Geronimooooo.....

Big Spike in Productivity

During 2024, the project has scored 8 GAs, 2 FLs and a GT, up from last year's 4 GAs and a GT. Several additional things are in the pipeline, with a bunch of things currently having been nominated with some mix of OlifanofmrTennant, TheDoctorWho, and Pokelego999 having their names attached to them. Allow me to look into the nominees.
  1. Series 14: As of July 18th, every single episode has been sent to GAN, with "Boom", "73 Yards", and "The Devil's Chord" having made it to GA.
  2. 2023 Specials: Early in the year, as part of trying to not lose the WikiCup, Ollie sent "The Star Beast" (still salty about the move) to GAN. It was reviewed by frequent collaborator (fly high) of hers, but failed. She then fixed it up and sent it back where it passed. Later "The Giggle" was expanded and sent to GA, followed shortly by "Wild Blue Yonder". WBY received help by JustAnotherCompanion, a pretty fresh user. This other companion chose not to be listed as co-nom. A page was created for "Destination: Skaro" and quickly got GA status.
  3. The Daleks' Master Plan was also sent to GAN by Rhain. It passed to join Rhain's other First Doctor content, being the fourth season three article to get the green check.
  4. Peter Capaldi: The filmography and newly created awards of Capaldi were both sent to FLC and passed. Capaldi's main page was sent to GA, though due to some minor incompetence on the part of the nominator it was failed.

Proposals to the WikiProject

A recent proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Doctor Who suggested potential improvements and suggestions for the main page of the project, as well as discussions about the project overall. The proposals are as follows:
  1. The Task Forces section should be removed due to inactivity in the Torchwood Task Force, and a lack of significant interest in creating further Task Forces.
  2. The freenode channel no longer works and should be removed due to most discussion taking place on site.
  3. Due to the low quality of Lungbarrow and Jubilee despite being sample articles, these articles should either be removed as samples or improved. Additionally, the "sample device" has a very small application field, and should be removed from the sample articles section.
  4. An updates infobox should be included, similarly to those used by Wikipedia:VGCHAR.
  5. Radio Times's Doctor Who sections should be included in the references section due to their benefits for the project sourcing wise.
  6. The Deletion Discussion archive should be removed, or have work invested in updating it, due to its lack of updates.

A move discussion is currently underway on whether or not Doctor Who series 14 should be moved to Doctor Who season 1 (2024). The discussion also involves conversation on a few other adjacent articles. If you have an opinion on the matter please read over the discussion or leave comments.

Hi TheDoctorWho, I've now finished my c/e. In the Season 1 table of the section "Episodes", I am seeing an error message: "Preview warning: Page using Template:WritingCredits with unknown parameter "tfirst"". This warning only shows in preview mode. I looked at the template in question {{WritingCredits}}, which does not have a "tfirst" parameter so I've no idea why it's there; you can probably remove it with no bother. RE: Doctor Who Series 14

I'm concerned about your nom for series fourteen due to the fact it's current under a move discussion (Thus, the article isn't stable and wouldn't meet one of the GA criteria). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel you should probably wait for the move discussion to finish before nominating so it doesn't conflict with the ongoing move discussion and get auto-failed because of it. I actually originally intended on waitinf, and have for a while (you can see my original message on Alex's talk page. However, I had anothwr read over the good article criteria, and the stableness of the article specifically refers to edit warring/content disputes, which isnt the case here. No one has attempted to move the article prior to the discussion being closed, and even if it is moved, it wouldn't be easily moved back without a page mover. The article itself has been stable for quite a while even when ut comes to the series 14/season 1 dispute, ehich wasnt originally the case. TheDoctorWho (talk) 17:24, 3 August 2024 (UTC)
