Women in Red
Hi there, TheLonelyPather, and welcome to Women in Red. I'm really pleased to see you intend to cover a whole series of Chinese women who suffered during the Cultural Revolution. On the basis of Sun Sunquan, we can expect excellent coverage. You already have wide experience as an editor but if you have not already done so, you might find it interesting to look through our Primer. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 06:15, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

- Yeah, I'm practically "gone", in the sense of not creating substantial contents. But doing some one-minute-edits and gifting barnstar to an awesome editor like you are still available. - You should also be proud of Johann Adam Schall von Bell, your fellow German from the 1600s, one of the most important missionaries in China. He is another Jesuit just like Zheng Manuo. I plan to rework his article–probably next year.

Cheers, TheLonelyPather (talk) 20:28, 30 July 2023 (UTC)- Hi again, TheLonelyPather, I saw no reason to mess with the citations in this article. I have moved some extended text, and Latin and (probably) Portuguese text with their citations into the footnotes section; they are redundant and most readers of English Wikipedia won't understand them. Feel free to correct anything I've misinterpreted but I don't think I have. Good luck with your planned FA nom and cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:57, 1 August 2023 (UTC).
I removed the PROD tag. My Google Scholar search was ambiguous until I added his middle initial -- there are multiple academics named "Subir Das". That gave me these results; I think he'd likely survive an AfD.

Help needed: suspect sockpuppetry?

Hi admins,
I found User:Mariyachowdhury and User: Aaron Liu have two identical user pages. Now, Mariachowdhury is also involved in an AN incident: WP:AN/I#Promotional_editing_is_making_a_speedy_deletion_confusing.
What is Wikipedia's policy on this? Many thanks in advance. TheLonelyPather (talk) 17:18, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- The heck? It appears I have somehow become rather famous enough to have a random vandal copy my user page. You can also see that they've tried to copy MaterialScientist's user page [1] before settling on mine, probably because MaterialScientist's list of works was too obvious. Also, they are not identical; I've made numerous edits to my user page since March. Aaron Liu (talk) 17:26, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Also note that most sockpuppets are not dumb enough to copy their sockpuppeteer's user page; that would be way too much of a giveaway. Aaron Liu (talk) 17:29, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Nothing to do here.--Bbb23 (talk) 17:30, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, Aaron. That makes sense, but a sockpuppeteer might use someone else's user page to conceal their sock's identity. I should have phrased this clearly enough. TheLonelyPather (talk) 19:38, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Same goes for any disruptive account, and copying within Wikipedia requires attribution. I think it's more to mislead people into thinking they aren't a new user. Aaron Liu (talk) 19:50, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the understanding. I suggest that we end the discussion here. I hope you be aware of this other account. TheLonelyPather (talk) 19:53, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've already blanked their user page
Also, I've noticed you tag a lot of your edits as minor edits. This is kinda confusing but according to Help:Minor edit only edits that could never be disputed such as typo corrections, corrections to style according to MOS and expanding a citation (filling out the various fields within it). New page reviewer granted
Hi TheLonelyPather. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers
" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:
- Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
- You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
- If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
- Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
- Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
- Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.
The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 12:46, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
Review Request
Hi. Thanks for the review on Buheeerdun. Just wondering if you could also review Habila Awusayiman as well given the similarities? I also have two other articles that have been in the NPP queue for some time, Eric Nicksick and LMR Partners. If you have time to review those that would also be great. Thanks Imcdc Contact 16:30, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi @Imcdc,
- Thanks for the message. I am a reviewer quite new to the scene. I reviewed Buheeerdun (and Habila Awusayiman, just a minute ago) because I am versatile in reading Mandarin and confirming Mandarin sources. I don't think I have time or priority for the two articles you bring up in the upcoming 20 days, and I apologize for not being able to help you further. New pages patrol newsletter
Hello TheLonelyPather,
Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!
October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.
PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.
Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.
Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Page Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Help needed: the activities of a new user is not contributive to Wikipedia
This request for help from administrators has been answered. If you need more help or have additional questions, please reapply the {{admin help}} template, or contact the responding user(s) directly on their own user talk page. |
Hi Admins,
Suppose I found that the activities of a new user is not contributive to Wikipedia. For example, they move articles without consensus, and that they create articles that looks LLM-ish and has no citations. What's the best course of action here? Should I report them to AN/I? That might be too harsh on a new user. Should I ask an admin to send them a welcome message and direct them to the teahouse? Please enlighten me. Cheers, -- TheLonelyPather (talk) 19:38, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
- Hi TLP. It's hard to answer without knowing specifics, so please speak up if you think I haven't addressed the real issue or if you have follow-up questions. If the mistakes being made appear to be in good-faith, I'd just approach the user and give them some tips. Editors that stick around are ones that are receptive to feedback (we all make mistakes), so this will be a good test for them. If the issues appear to be motivated by bad faith, or if the new user doesn't correct after some feedback, you may want to seek out more admin action. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:51, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Perhaps you have some suggestions
As it happens, I am teaching classes full of Chinese exchange students - and I have assign them to write (or translate) articles on Wikipedia. I often let them chose their own topics for extra credit as long as they are related to our class topics (social sciences, broadly construed), but a lot of ideas I get from them are modern-day TV shows and like, not particularly... inspiring. Perhaps you know of a list or lists of important historical figures like Xiaocui or such I could direct them too? See User:Piotrus/Ideas_for_students and User:Piotrus/Educational project results for more info on what I am doing (or stop by my talk page and see messages from my current students if you are curious). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:45, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Piotrus,
- Thank you for reaching out (and WOW! It's exciting to have your name show up on my talk page). What you have brought up is a very fine topic and requires one to walk a very thin line. Before I bring you any suggestions, I want to make it clear that I do not encourage you to directly ask Chinese exchange students to write about topics that could be politically sensitive.
- This is because, to put it frankly:
- Students from China may get into trouble back home if they write about sensitive topics online, especially when they are editing with a registered account;
- Because of complex factors, students from China may subscribe to certain political beliefs that are different from mainstream Western political beliefs.
- I think the safest options for them are indeed, to quote from you, modern-day TV shows and like, not particularly... inspiring. It takes guts to write about Abortion in China, or COVID-19 misinformation by China, both of which I see on your list of "To translate or expand in Korean or Chinese wikis".
- When it comes to this matter, I can only stress the importance of prudence so far.
- Now that I have given you a proper warning, I am more than happy to give you some lists.
- I first found Chen Xiaocui from this list, and I plan to write about several other women figures from this list. I think WiR is a great motivation, as I also saw that you encourage your students to choose subjects from WiR.
- Another good exercise would be to translate GAs and FAs from Chinese Wikipedia into en-wiki. I see that you have asked your students to translate from en-wiki to zh-wiki and ko-wiki, but what about the reverse? The only caveat here is that a lot of zh-wiki articles are politically sensitive, because zh-wiki exists outside of the Great Firewall and therefore undergoes no censorship.
- You're a sociologist by training, so it would nice to see if your students would like to learn more about the history of sociology in China, by translating and expanding articles from this category.
- I think you can bring these lists to them and let them pick-and-choose. I'll add lists when I can think of any. Again, do guide them, but do be prudent--as you are a professor, you know how to teach better than I do.
- Cheers, -- TheLonelyPather (talk) 14:13, 22 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the suggestions at the talk page, the author is one of my students. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:37, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- Understood. I'll refrain from participating in the discussion apart from supplying you with the rationale behind renaming. TheLonelyPather (talk) 09:30, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
- You are welcome to participate as much (or as little) as you wish. I'll also point out another almost-ready article by my student (I gave them some more feedback on my talkpage) that you may be interested in - it's one of those "more inspiring" (and dangerous...) topics, certainly: User:TMXX0818/sandbox. If you have any feedback on it, perhaps adding it to the article's talk page and pinging me and the student author would be best. Speedy deletion nomination of Resolution which is vetoed on Israel – Palestinian Conflict by The United Nation Security Council
A tag has been placed on Resolution which is vetoed on Israel – Palestinian Conflict by The United Nation Security Council requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a recently created redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer, or other unlikely search term.

Cookies?
Hope you like cookies. I mean thank you for creating John Lei Jiapei, nice to see his real face on sacrilege being exposed. Also for your good faith edit of Cathedral of the Angels, Xichang. But according to Faith Weekly, "公" was taken as a homophone of "宮", I guess it's in the sense of "temple" as in the Taoist tradition. It is, therefore, literally "Yong'an Temple", which may in turn lead to the translation of "Yong'an Catholic Church", since it's a Catholic church by its very nature. Besides, you can see "永安公" on the right of this old photo. If "公" denotes "公教", it doesn't make sense that they left out one of the characters which form the word.
P.S.: Anthony Zhang Gang-yi may be a figure of interest to you. I read about him here. Let's see what inspiration can we get from all the resources available. Happy editing. -- Uriel1022 (talk) 17:49, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Uriel1022 Thank you and thank you–and thanks for providing more context for the 永安公 situation. A Catholic church named in the Taoist tradition? China does contains myriads of mystery... I concede my edits and hope it doesn't take much for you to revert them.
- Anthony Zhang Gangyi looks a great read, but its zh-wiki article lacks references. Will see what I can do, but that comes after the Cross Temple. I wrote about Lei Jiapei because it could be written in an hour's work.
- Speaking of Yuyencia (which I must deem not an RS), you might as well consider writing the English article of Liu Zhongjing on en-wiki. I'm not a political person and have no motivation to write about it... Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 08:58, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- No, it's certainly not an RS. It's merely a sharing of information and different opinions, mostly because it's Christian-related. Liu Zhongjing is out of the question, even Yuyencia Catholic sounds much more reliable than him. Happy editing. Uriel1022 (talk) 09:51, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Uriel1022 I found some sources regarding Anthony Zhang Gangyi:

- https://www.ucanews.com/story-archive/?post_name=/1997/04/10/church-leader-who-hosted-underground-bishops-conference-dies&post_id=9211 (can't deem it to be RS, looks like some cross-referencing with Wiki has happened?)

- https://scholars.hkbu.edu.hk/ws/portalfiles/portal/55631014/RO_rel_ja-30_JA027285.pdf tangential mention from a paper

- It is better than the hagiography on zh-wiki. Let's see what we can do. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 14:27, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Would you like to review my FAN Luo Wenzao during winter break?
@Piotrus: Merry Christmas and happy holidays. I understand that you are busy, having two entire classes of students to teach, but perhaps you are interested in reviewing Luo Wenzao during winter break? Your opinions will be highly regarded, since you have written a grand sum of 22 FAs. Please see Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Luo_Wenzao/archive1. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 14:17, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
- @TheLonelyPather I'll try to get around to it next year :) Ping me in January if you don't see my comments, I'll be happy to offer some feedback when I have more time. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:08, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- PS. If you have time to offer feedback on any other articles my students are translating and posting on English Wikipedia (many related to China), feel free to do so :) Drug policy in China was just published (it is not a translation but an attempt to create a new article by a more ambitious student - my class allows both research and translation). You can find a partial list of topics here. User:Bai0926/Economic inequality in China may be published if the student can fix the references. I am not sure if Draft:Anti-Taiwan independence sentiment and Draft:U.S. assistance defend Taiwan can be salvaged for publication, sadly, due to the low quality of Chinese original articles being translated (fascinating topics...). Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:29, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Piotrus: I am happy to look into them when I have time. Just a few thoughts on the few articles and drafts you brought up:
- "Drug policy in China" is surely a wonderful start for an article. Kudos to the student.
- The "Economic inequality in China" draft relies mainly on Chinese sources. I think the student can publish the article as a start, but future en-wiki Wikipedians would need to gradually add English sources.
- Personally speaking, I think the draft of "Anit-Taiwan independence sentiment" is biased, as it only cites Chinese governmental / government-related sources. To write a decent article on that topic, one must dive into the available English sources, as Chinese sources are very polarised regarding Taiwan.
- I am not sure whether it is necessary to write an article on "U.S. assistance defend Taiwan". It is better to write about the principle of the policy of the U.S. assisting the defense of Taiwan in the article US-Taiwan relations. Regarding the execution of the policy, we already have Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty.
- It is a bit unfortunate that some original Chinese articles are of low quality. For other articles written by your students, I will leave messages on the talk pages of the drafts and ping both the student and you. I can't promise that I will review a lot, but I'm happy to review them, as the topics are, indeed, fascinating. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 05:09, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- I fully agree with all you said, except I think the US-Taiwan defense might be a bit broader than the Sino-American... treaty. At least, Chinese Wikipedia has a separate article there. As I am now in the middle of the final grading etc. here's another "fun" topic that I don't know if it will be finished: User:Hkiho/sandbox. Qilu culture and Culture of Shenzhen were published although I wouldn't call them our best work. I am making a wikified list of articles my students worked on at User:Piotrus/Educational_project_results#Fall_2023 (hopefully I'll be done with main pass by Sunday). And of you want to see what they did over the last decade or so, the list is mostly complete (note it used to be mostly Koreans, but now demographics of my classes are are seeing a major shift...).
