Admin nomination
Hey Tom, I would humbly suggest that you add to your response at least to question one. Based on what you and I have discussed, your answer can be misread as it stands and I don't think it fully reflects your stance. People think you don't know the function of an admin, et al. I don't interpret your answer that way because you and I have discussed admin functioning in the context of my election, and how new admins - no matter how much they have read of policy and procedure (because I have read them all!) - still need to step lightly into new responsibilities, and learn from established sysops how best to use admin buttons to advance the project. I think if you supplemented your answer it would help you immensely. I see most of the opposition centering on that issue, and I think it is misinterpreting what you meant. From your discussions with me, I am certain you have read copiously on policy and procedure, but like me, feel a new admin needs to get a genuine feel for how to use the buttons in real life. Take care! old windy bear 23:05, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
- I would echo what old windy bear has said here - clarification on your answer to question one would be appreciated. I have no doubt that you will be an excellent admin, but a more precise answer to that question would be good. Carom 02:49, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks very much - I appreciate the expanded answer, which demonstrates considerable maturity. Hopefully other participants will also reconsider their positions in light of this statement. Carom 07:15, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
Question on Gun Turrets
Tom, you asked a "Question: On your recent edits to the page USS Iowa turret explosion you note that all 47 sailors inside turret #2 were killed; however, I am concerned about this edit since some preliminary research into the incident suggests that sailors on the lower levels of the turret may have survived. Could you provide your source for the edit? TomStar81 (Talk) 04:32, 15 July 2007 (UTC) - Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Paulburnett"" - Note the top label at http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/0161027.jpg, "Turret Proper." Everybody in the above-deck rotating box-like structure called the "turret proper" died; 11 of the people several decks down did survive. / / "...a devastating explosion ripped through the turret killing all 47 of the turret's crewmwmbers." - http://www.combie.net/webharbor/museum/memorial1.html. / / You can see the chart in the lower left of http://www.navsource.org/archives/01/0161021.jpg "47 killed instantaneously" - that's everybody inside the turret proper. It was not a survivable event for anybody inside the turret. / / "Everyone on the upper deck of the turret died instantaneously." and "Twelve Turret Two gunner's mates, who worked in the magazines and powder handling spaces (i.e., below decks - Paul B), escaped due to the heroism of two petty officers." - http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3720/is_199907/ai_n8874873. Does this help?
Re: Thank you
No problem. You actually beat me to tagging the article by about ten seconds. Always good to have more people monitoring new pages to help weed out the nonsense. cheers, Resolute 04:41, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: CSD question
Hey there. Yeah, it's always a good idea to leave a note on the creator's talk page to let them know the reason for the speedy tag; if you look at the tag, there's actually a template in it you can copy-and-paste that will provide the right rationale for the type of deletion. Just copy that, check the history, go to the user's talk page, paste it (I usually leave a welcome template as well), and away you go. It might not do a lot of good, but hopefully they read and understand the problem. Tony Fox (arf!) review? 05:01, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

Chevy R07 Article taken care of!!!!!!
I erased eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverything on that Chevy R07 page just as you requested. A few things before I get crucified for the 1000000000000000000000th time in my life. First of all, yes I had citations for that article, second, yes it was advertising, just like the page on Ford modular engines is advertising for ford, and the Toyota page is advertising for toyota. Do you know where I got the information for that article, in a oval racing magazine which gets no money from no one for doing these freakin articles in the first place. It was factual information on the Chevrolet R07 engine just as there is on every other engine page on wikipedia except ohhhh yeaaa I remember now the Chevrolet R07. Wikipedia had no information on this topic last week when I looked for it and I was like ohhh man this sucks so here i'm trying to be nice and make things convinient for everyone else who tries to look up info on the R07 so that they don't have to do like me and look and look and look for a solid week to find info on it. Every single page in wiki gives facts backed by a source. Mine was no different so now I'm the bad guy as usual for spending 5 hours of my time to make this article look good sound professional and to get information which just fyi isn't going to help chevy sell any cars b/c ohh yeahhh I know b/c it's a race engine only. I come here my first damn day and now already im the bad guy. well you know what i apologize for being so polite. you know what, it took me a week of hard working to find that information and you know what wiki obviously doesn't need me so you know what that R07 page can just stay blank if theyre waiting for me to add more to it again. You know my dad had paranoia pretty bad but this is the worst, accusing me of trying to sell racing engines for chevy with an engine that can't even be bought by the average joe. When here I am stating facts about it proven facts man not optical illusions. So I guess this means every single page on wiki is advertising for someone huh man I guess they all need to be marked for deletion. I've been crucified enough in my life I don't need ANYONE ELSE ADDING TO IT NOT ANOTHER #$$!@$@#$@!$#@!$!$!$@$$!$@#$@!$@$#@!$!$!#!@#$@$ SINGLE PERSON!!!!!!!!!!! Blsanders 10:06, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Chevy R07 article
You see thats just it though the r07 is a chevy race engine but the three separate sections I broke it down into are merely parts of the engine and I was simply breaking the entire article into sections to explain to everyone in as good a detail as possible all the ways that this engine works and is unique. As far as its category, it is a chevrolet pushrod V8 which wikipedia already has a large section on the Chevrolet Small Block but this is the R07, way way different from a SBC by the way I noticed that the article wiki has on the Small Block chevy contains only about three sentences on the SB2 race engine. there again I guess I'm kinda being too picky about it but I think the SB2 needs its own separate article too. Just because it is one, a racing engine only and two, not technically a small block chevy. If you think it's a good idea, i can write an article on all of the Chevy small block variant racing engines (SB2, SB2.2, snd R07). Again I think these engines deserve their own separate article just b/c they are so different and are racing only engines. It's not to advertise for Chevy it's just I hear so many of my friends call me up and ask about the SB2 and now the R07 b/c wiki has nothing on them. I'm just trying to change that, not to sell engines for Chevy. You can't even buy these engines from a GM dealer even if you had the 65-70K for the parts.(crazy price huh). Sorry I get long winded but just wanted to explain everything the best I could. Tell me what you think man.Blsanders 19:44, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
Withdrawn RFA
My deepest respect for your honesty, sense, kind words and courage. My even deeper respect for withdrawing your own RFA for betterment of this work - that is an admin quality action. A shame it came to this. Good luck, best wishes and Happy editing. Pedro | Chat 20:16, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Words are inadequate to express my sorrow that your nomination got destroyed by false accusations and inuendos,(because I do believe that). I did not know you had withdrawn when I wrote you on my talk page, and I am so sorry. You are not going to believe this, look at what is on New England's talk page, after all that crap from him about your (falsely) nominating me, wiht the attendant inuendos: (to New England, on his talk page), "Hehe, thanks for the compliment! I will support you when you make a request for adminship (if you want to!). With regards, Lradrama 17:49, 16 July 2007 (UTC) [[1]]. It gets better, go to Lradrama's nomination page: and here is New England, "For the record, I took more as a courtesy thing than a real promise, and I do not intend on going through an RFA anytime soon (been in two really heated disputes recently, but if someone wants to nominate me....) New England (C) (H) 20:41, 16 July 2007 (UTC)"[[2]] Now unlike New England, I will not say that is a quid pro quo, but dear Lord, after all his comments, and the uproar which destroyed your nomination, can you believe those statements???old windy bear 21:36, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Old Windy Bear, I did not ask for her support. And to avoid any Conflict of Interest, I would respectfully decline a nomination from her if she offers anytime. In fact, I would likely decline any nomination from any user given not only my dispute with you but also a current RFC on Ted Kennedy. New England (C) (H) 22:02, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- New England (C) (H) If and when you run for admin, I will judge your nomination on its merits. I have to say, the fact you would never admit that Stillstudying nominated me, and that all poor Tom did was reformat it, and the fact you reworded to demand I resign while you and still were arguing would weigh against you - but it would not be definitive. I would weight and weigh the nomination based on your answers, and your contributions, which frankly, I have not had time to fully assess. As an admin, i am obligated to approach your nomination with an open mind, or not vote at all. I did find this sad, given again, that you would never admit that you were wrong in part on this whole argument. But that is past. old windy bear 23:14, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

I misjudged you
First off, I voted in opposition to your recent RfA. Clearly I misjudged you. Taking an action such as withdrawing an RfA at your own expense for the betterment of the project and the community is a quality which I can only hope to imitate. Once you return from your wikibreak, I would be happy to renominate you for adminship. J-stan Talk 22:02, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- I'll get right on your nomination. J-stan Talk 01:01, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Re: your RfA
Wow, that is not a happy thing to have happen during one's RfA, but I think you took the high road on this matter. I hope it all works out to the best, and that we can turn our attention back to having you put your best foot forward. -- llywrch 22:42, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Indeed, it stinks, that you and others got put through all that nonsense. I, too, hope everything works out for you! Hope you'll run again someday. --SXT4 02:24, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
Your RfA
Thank you for your comments on my unsuccessful RfA. I appreciate the trust you and the WP community have in me; however, this time around things just didn't work out. TomStar81 (Talk) 22:29, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- You express the terms and conditions of your withdrawl from the RfA process with eloquence and modesty, echoing a previous essayist: "What benefit will it be to you if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?" (Mark 8:36). I am sorry that you felt forced in to doing this and I hope that your next RfA encounters more favourable conditions. Regards, (aeropagitica) 23:29, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Don't worry, if you listen to and address the concerns I am sure you will pass next time. Good luck. Acalamari 23:56, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
- Tom, you are a good editor. Do not let his result dis-hearten you, I failed my first RfA and have no succeeded since, and many other now Admin have to go though 3-4 RfA's. Dfrg.msc 01:09, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Tom, I put off visiting RFA for a few days and was shocked to see how your nomination degenerated. I look forward to being in a position to support you in the future. -- DS1953 talk 03:30, 17 July 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry it hurts to have to pull it. A good decision. Not like you pulled it because you weren't getting any support, but that sideshow was unfortunate and not your fault at all. I think two wikipedians should be apologizing to you. Anyway, hope you come back soon, the Iowas are adrift with out their rudder and I can only keep them off the lee shore of indifferent editing and shoals of vandals so long.--J Clear 03:39, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Afd
TomStar, I wrote an article on this site about my school. I did so as per a request of a school admin., who was curious to see a studen't point of view on the school. My article was quickly labeled "unconstructive" and deleted. The inconsiderate person who did this did not even pause to ask me why I had written such an article. I was not even given the time to finish the article, the later parts of which I can assure you would have proven constructive. Far more constructive than "Films That Most Frequently Use The Word 'Fuck'", "Dwarf Tossing", and much other such drivel I have come across on this site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jimmyjkjr (talk • contribs)
Short stubs relating to Vitruvius
Yes they are a work in progress and will be fleshed out as needed. Do you have any suggestions as how to go about adding information? The stubs are from "THE TEN BOOKS ON ARCHITECTURE" written by VITRUVIUS between 29 B.C. and 27 B.C.. The version I am using was translated by MORRIS HICKY MORGAN, PH.D., LL.D. late Professor of classical philology at Harvard University, Harvard University Press 1914, Project Gutenberg EBook. If you need more references I will be glad to provide them as needed. I will be working on these stubs and working on the Wikipedia page for Vitruvius's book while conducting my own research at Stanford University Construction Engineering Management Department. This is a bit of an outlet to take a break and do something fairly monotonous. Do you have any ideas as to creating a page on Wikipedia for my own research and others as it develops? Most of the information is already out there just not combined together on one page. What is your background, are you a literary major or social sciences? Hope to hear from you soon, if you have any directions or other concerns please feel free to modify the pages as needed or let me know and I will make the adjustments.Granite07 06:18, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
It's Okay
After I read your apology on my talk page, I just wanted to say that it's okay. It's just that I didn't know how to do userboxes and other stuff so I need to learn how to do that, immediately. If you or anybody can help me out, I'll be glad (not in a mean way). Again, it's okay about what you said. I'm not mad at you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by KiaraFan13 (talk • contribs)

Help
My article is all messed up. How can I do a Contents table? I need to create one for my UserPage. Also, I needed some help on created a box that says something like "Born: May 7th, 1994" or something like my full name. Can you help me with that, please? -KiaraFan13

Spelling
If you use the Firefox browser you can download a little add on which checks your spelling on wikipedia or anywhere else. Any errors are underlined in red and it might help you improve your writing a bit. 203.108.239.12 03:00, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you for the pointers, but I use IE when editting from home, which is where I am now. My firefox userbox refers to the net accsess avaliable at UTEP, we are encourged to use it rather IE becuase IE has a nasty habit of freezing up on us (if it loads at all). TomStar81 (Talk) 20:19, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Couple of tips
Hey :) Saw your RfA, thought I'd make two suggestions:
- Set "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" on Editing preferences under "my preferences". I did this about 3 months before my successful RfA, after seeing mention of it on another RfA. Some !voters are really obsessed with edit summary usage.
- Be careful how you handle your oppose voters - if you disagree with them loudly or say you are offended by them, people might think that's what you'll be like as an admin as well. As an admin I get some thoroughly nasty types contacting me sometimes and it's necessary to just ignore them for the greater good and take what you can learn from it.
Feel free to archive this after you've read it, but thought I'd share anyway. Orderinchaos 10:49, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

RfA 2
Hey, just saw that you didn't succeed on the second RfA. Sorry. It appears that the two things you need to work on are distance between RfAs, and you should figure out what you want to do as an Admin. J-stan Talk 02:02, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
I am sorry to report that your recent request for adminship did not result in consensus to promote you. Please feel free to reapply in the future. Andre (talk) 02:05, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Personally, I think that under unique circumstances like yours the argument "too little time between RFAs" is not a very good argument. But, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and certainly many people expressed that opinion. With more good work, some improved answers to the questions and a little time between now and the next RFA, you should have no difficulty getting the tools. -- DS1953 talk 05:41, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Sorry bro, give it some time and i'll deftl support you next time, I like your answers, the way you may help others, you should also tried to be a little more neutral, i've read some of what you wrote before, some people could feel like you're a little too rough. Yes, its okay to revert the Fire Control Mod.
Hi. Yes there are no refs cited. All was out of my head. I guess I need to write a book first, and then I can cite that. It's no problem to me if you to remove it. I'm new, and I need to try to find some refs that may fit. Most of this stuff was classified when I was hands on. That may be a problem when you're trying to write about stuff that the Navy held close. No refs to cite. FTC Gerry 20:48, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
- Okay. I'm looking for citations now, and I'll add then when I find them. Thanks for the patience. FTC Gerry 21:38, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

It came from KARE 11's website, and I couldn't find copyright info. They have been trying to inform people about it for a while, so I'm 99% sure it's OK. The pic is all over the place. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Penguin boy93 (talk • contribs)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Ghost in the Shell World Map (S.A.C. 2nd GIG).jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Ghost in the Shell World Map (S.A.C. 2nd GIG).jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 08:59, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

Sure thing - I understand but as it was under discussion on the talk page, there was consensus for a move, and as expressly stated in Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages#How to merge pages, there is no need for formal discussion if it isn't really controversial. Fair use disputed for Image:Image:Hohenheim of Light (FMA).JPG
Thanks for uploading Image:Hohenheim of Light (FMA).JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:51, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Re: A-class question
I would imagine that we're not the only ones; but there's only a handful of projects that conduct any sort of formal review for A-Class, so I'm not sure that a Wikipedia-wide approach would make sense here. Kirill 10:00, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

RE:Your reply to my tags placed in USS Iowa(BB-61)
I apologise for placing wrongly the {{copypaste}} and {{verylong}} tags on the article USS Iowa(BB-61) by accident. I was exploring the tags you could place at the top of an article should you feel it needs correction. I immediately went to the article and placed the few tags, based on what I saw there the last time I read it.
Unknown to me, the article had been modified and corrected already.
As such, I apologise for placing the tags wrongly and shall not be so rash in putting tags next time.

Better source request for Image:AI_Matrix_Sara.JPG
Thanks for uploading Image:AI_Matrix_Sara.JPG. You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talkpage. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 03:10, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Kane Picture from Command & Conquer
Recently, I found your picture at Image:The End (C&C).jpg of Kane from the Command & Conquer series embracing the GDI Ion Cannon stream as the Temple of Nod was destroyed. However, you don't mention which game the image is from (you just say that it's from "an FMV sequence in the game"). Are you referring to Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn? If so, I think it ought to be stated. And if this image is in the game, how can it be seen? I recently completed the GDI campaign and didn't see this image at all, just Kane being crushed by some rocks as the Temple was destroyed. Anyway, if you could clear this up, I'd be obliged. Image Upload problem
For the record, the problem is that you were attempting to fill in the destination box: when uploading an image to the commons that does not already exist leave the destination box blank and only use the browse box (the top one). The lower one, reading the name of the image to be uploaded, will automatically fill itself in once the image is the first box has been selected for uploading
Thanks very much for uploading the image for me Tom! However, I didn't really understand these comments of yours about what I was doing wrong. I load the source into the browse box first, as soon as I do that a default name for the image appears in the "destination filename" box below - and the image still doesn't load regardless of whether I edit that default name, leave it as it is, or just leave the box blank.
However, I do *at last* seem to have found a workaround for the problem. I tried uploading an image that I myself created from MS Paint, and it uploaded straight away with no problems. When I tried to upload an image saved to my hard drive from navsource online, it still wouldn't upload, BUT when I loaded the image into MS Paint and then saved it over the existing filename, suddenly the upload worked!
From this I conclude that Commons doesn't like the native format of the navsource files for some reason, which is weird because they are JPEGs just the same and it seems to work for you! I don't know why that would happen, do you?
But at least I seem to have found a workaround for the problem, even if it is a bit clumsy.
Thanks once again for your assistance. Gatoclass 06:25, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:USS Kentucky (BBG-1) concept artwork.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:USS Kentucky (BBG-1) concept artwork.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Pagrashtak 20:30, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
