What next Vensatry? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:10, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
? Vensatry (Talk) 12:18, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Smart reply. Also it is Wikipedia's shortest DYK hook. For me, GOCE c/e on Mayabazar has begun. Aiming to take it further and make it the first Telugu film to achieve that.   Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:20, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Wasn't trying to act smart. I never set targets, although there's a bunch of works in my 'Current and future projects'. My tasks are prioritised based on my moods. Vensatry (Talk) 12:26, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Mine too. The difference is that, i choose what to fill in that section based on my mood. Mayabazar is a long commitment. After that, i too don't know. Going for something new? or old? Nothing planned yet. But i wish to see a DYK of some Rajini's film this Dec 12. I feel that can be a short, simple "tribute" to the "legendary". What do you think? Does it look feasible?   Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:32, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
I joined WP with the sole intention of improving these two articles – Rajinikanth and Tiruchchirappalli. Done with the latter, but still waiting for the former. Hope we'll take his bio to TFA, at least in 2016. :) Vensatry (Talk) 12:39, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Possible. But do you think any of his 90's film be made a GA? A hook related to it can make my dream come true (i wont be making it a GA though)! Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:41, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Annamalai, Baashha, and Muthu look like being potential ones. Of the three, Baashha seems to be the best. Vensatry (Talk) 15:56, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Baashha is one of Kailash's GA endeavours (as quoted by him). He is planning to bring Roja to GA status as he never brought a 90's film to GA. When i posed the same question i.e. DYK on Dec 12, he said that he hasn't decided anything yet. I indeed respect his opinions and shall wait, this all is voluntary right? Apart from Roja and the other three Rajini films you suggested, i would also expect another Ratnam film to make it big! Pavanjandhyala (talk) 16:05, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Yeah I missed Thalapathi. In fact, all of Mani's 90s films can easily be taken to GA. Vensatry (Talk) 16:10, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks to Baradwaj Rangan's conversations with Mr. Ratnam. I like Thalapathi mostly for Santhosh Sivan's cinematography (the way he uses the sun as a character in the film) and Ilaiyaraaja's music. Rajinikanth was good, but something was missing for sure. His signature style? may be. What do you think of the film? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 16:15, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
Not just Rangan, his films of that period have a wide coverage when compared to other filmmakers'. Yes, Santosh Sivan was excellent in Thalapathi. I think this was his first "high-profile" film. I used to laugh when people say he was awesome in Thuppakki. But the idea of using sun to highlight Surya's character was definitely Mani's, not his. More than Mani and SS, the real hero was IR. Keeping the songs aside, the BGM was vera level. I get goosebumps every time when I listen to the RR. It was such a realistic score that you could totally interrelate the plot with it. Coming to Rajini, I think this was a rejuvenation kind of thing (to bring out the actor in him after a long time). Vensatry (Talk) 16:31, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
I accept that it was Ratnam's idea, but the way Sivan keeps the lighting is great. For example, Surya's breakup with Subhalakshmi, his interaction with Arjun's father at the riverside and the one where Surya's mother visits him at his house in the slum, and notably in the end; the sun was surely a character in all these scenes. The BGM of Sundari used in the pre-climax is my favourite. Coming to Rajini, his interpretation of Surya was more alienated, bringing back the Kaali i saw in Mullum Malarum. Stubborn yet kind, deglam, high on temper minus the "style"! It was surely one of his underrated performances i believe. Once, one of my friends, a die hard Vijay fan expressed his wish to see Vijay playing Surya in the film's remake if any. I was like, "he doesn't have the versatility to carry such characters". But i smiled silently. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 16:57, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
I don't think sun was used as a character. It was used as an element that conjuncts with Surya's character to signify that he (Karna) was a child of the Sun God. Yes, the lighting was brilliant, but still the credit should go to Mani because he brilliantly uses his cameramen. Anybody in the league of Balu, AK, AM, or PC would've done that equally well. Coming to Rajini's performance, I don't think it was underrated. May be in terms of awards and accolades, but it received its share of praise from his fans and critics. Vensatry (Talk) 17:37, 2 November 2015 (UTC)
That's what i mean. I don't think so that Thalapathi is celebrated and remembered in the same way as the more commercial Baassha and Padayappa. Correct me if i'm wrong. Well, do you think the present generation actors can play Surya, Devaraj and Arjun convincingly? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 02:28, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Thalapathi was and is a great film. IMHO, such films are best not remade with different actors. As actor Sivakumar and Crazy Mohan say so here and here respectively, you cannot remake classics. I'd like to include Thalapathi as well as it's also a classic.    — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 05:35, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Yes. Because Thalapathi is different from Annamalai/Baassha/Padayappa in the sense that it's more a director's film rather than a star's. Do you compare Nayagan with Sagalakala Vallavan/Thoongadhey Thambi Thoongadhey? As for the present generation actors, I do not have an opinion. Vensatry (Talk) 05:41, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Well IMHO classics are never "remade" in the same language. They are either "retold" or "adapted". I know that Thalapathi is a director's film. One example i can quote in Telugu is Aapadbandhavudu Vs. Yamudiki Mogudu/Gharana Mogudu. We can never say how and when one can adapt this film. I never expected that Ratnam's Mouna Raagam (which i consider very superior) would get an adaptation. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 06:17, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
@Pavanjandhyala: Raja Rani is more of an inspiration than an adaptation (although both have past lovers whereas in Mouna Raagam, only Revathi did so (that portion's the best part of the Mouna Raagam.))  — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 06:35, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Sorry Ssven2. I am not going to buy Atlee's words. If that film failed, none would dare to call it an "inspiration". Just look at that. So close, so near to Mouna Raagam. Nazim's character was added only to make sure that Arya's character is more experienced in heart-break than that of Mohan's (and also to break the monotony). Well, as i said in the past, it is my opinion. Opinions do differ from person to person. Thanks to you and Vensatry for a long, long and long conversation!   Pavanjandhyala (talk) 06:42, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

@Both: Just to clear up, Mouna Raagam was inspired (or call adapted) from Nenjathai Killathe. So stop fighting. :) Vensatry (Talk) 08:07, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

More into the film, Mani initially wanted Suhasini, NK's lead, to play 'Divya'. Vensatry (Talk) 08:08, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Was that a fight? God! Pavanjandhyala (talk) 08:20, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

DYK for Moodu Pani

Archived page Vensatry (ping) 12:20, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
That photograph of Balu Mahendra is dated 2000, so I wrote that way in Moodu Pani. Kailash29792 (talk) 15:03, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
What's the problem here? Vensatry (ping) 15:05, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
What I mean is, the date in this image reads 2000, and so in Moodu Pani I wrote in the image caption, "Balu Mahendra (left, pictured in 2000)". But you changed it. Now who is true? Kailash29792 (talk) 15:24, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
This is how he looked in 1997–98 and like this in the mid 2000s. His looks in the 'image in question' gives me a feeling that he was considerably older than he used to be 10 years ago. Coming to the date it's quite probable that the camera's date was incorrectly set; Nikon D90 was out only in 2008. I'm not sure about the date – so is the uncertainty. Vensatry (ping) 16:08, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Then I guess we can remove the year from the caption. The year rarely matters in such situations. Kailash29792 (talk) 16:29, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
If the year really matters, why remove it? Vensatry (ping) 16:51, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

New Wave Tamil cinema

I have created this userpage with which I intend to start an article. It's something along the lines of New Hollywood. What's your opinion of it?    — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 01:12, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Unless the movement becomes a significant thing like the French New Wave or New Hollywood (as you say), I don't think it warrants an article. Also, we need to have multiple reliable sources which enhance the notability of the topic, else it'll look like WP:SYNTH. Vensatry (Talk) 06:32, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
Point taken. New Hollywood has reliable sources from David Bordwell's and Peter Biskind's books which the New Wave Tamil cinema userpage lack. I think I'll just keep it as a userpage for now until it becomes as you say "a significant thing". It's more or less significant now but not widely covered in my opinion as staple commercial films are still being rolled out (like Aambala (2015), Puli (2015) and the forthcoming Vedhalam (2015).) BTW, which ones do you think are not much of "New Wave-style" films?    — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 07:50, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
The industry is still dominated by commercial films (in terms of output). When you talk about the change in trend, films like Pithamagan, Paruthiveeran, Polladhavan, Naan Kadavul, Aadukalam, etc., to name a few. However, the term "New Wave" came into picture only after the release of these films: Pizza, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, Soodhu Kavvum, Jigarthanda, Enakkul Oruvan, etc., Vensatry (Talk) 07:40, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Thoongaavanam

Hi Vensatry. Happened to watch two films today in theatres—Kumari 21F and Cheekati Rajyam, the Telugu version of Thoongaavanam. I liked both of them. Did you watch the latter i.e. the Tamil version? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 15:15, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Yet to watch Thoongavanam. Kumari 21F – hearing it for the first time. Looks like an offbeat film? Vensatry (Talk) 06:03, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Offbeat indeed, not for the story but its characters and the last half an hour. I know that Sukumar is a complex writer & director (give the plots of Arya, Arya 2, 100% Love and 1: Nenokkadine a small glance). But this was very bold and beautiful. Thoongaavanam was equally impressive, though long. Looks like Haasan's fascination towards long runtimes is not going to end anytime soon. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 09:37, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
What astonishes me more is that he looks so hurry to complete many films. Thoongavanam is his third in 2015. Vensatry (Talk) 09:50, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Who is 'Haasan', btw? Even he will be surprised if somebody calls him that way in TN. :) Vensatry (Talk) 09:52, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Okay, Kamal Haasan or Kamal simply (i prefer the former, it sounds good). And yes, three films in a year is something really strange until i found him saying this—"I’ve learnt the hard way not to give a long gap between films. My focus is to give quality films at great speed" at Hyderabad in an interview. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 09:59, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, I read that interview sometime back. But he keeps contradicting himself. Let's see how 2016 is going to be. Vensatry (Talk) 10:29, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
He does. But surely he gives something worth watching most of the times. His 2015 releases were surely interesting, though i feel the runtime of Thoongaavanam isn't justifiable. Unlike Uttama Villain and Papanasam, Thoongaavanam has a simple story and the ending is very clear from the initial stage itself. I felt he could've wrapped it up in a short time. Having said that, it was a very high quality product. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 13:03, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, it's getting a lot of positive reviews. Also, looks like Kamal is getting back to business. :) Vensatry (Talk) 15:13, 22 November 2015 (UTC)
Literally, Madhu Shalini does a "lip service" in the film. I don't think he would stop that anytime soon. Period! Seriously, he is the "kadhal mannan" of Tamil cinema. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 15:33, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

And that too, from an actress who is old enough to be his youngest daughter. Btw, I don't think he kissed anybody on screen after Hey Ram. Vensatry (Talk) 17:46, 22 November 2015 (UTC)

Hmm. I too observe that, and i feel happy because there was no such scene between Trisha and Kamal Haasan in the film. They would be too odd, more that his pairing with Madhu Shalini. BTW, Kamal's kitchen fight scene with Trisha and Kishore was fantastic! As i said before, the film was indeed a high quality product. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 13:48, 23 November 2015 (UTC)
Back after watching the film! Vensatry (Talk) 15:26, 24 November 2015 (UTC)
Good to know that. So, what is your feedback on it? What is your opinion on the performances in Thoongaavanam? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 01:54, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
The film was good, but as usual a lot of actors were wasted. Vensatry (Talk) 07:03, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Like Asha Sharath, Sampath Raj, Sanjay Bharathi etc. Isn't it? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 08:24, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Lol, for a minute I thought what has Sanjay Ramasamy got to do with Thoongavanam? Even Jagan and Uma Riyaz Khan. I'm not saying they are extremely talented, but wasted! Vensatry (Talk) 08:50, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Sanjay Bharathi is the one who claims to have protested against Kamal Haasan's films (in Thoongaavanam) i believe. Ramajogayya Sastry played that role in Telugu. Few are perhaps signed to fill the space and somehow, keep the audience busy. What do you think? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 09:27, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Ah, you mean his father Santhana Bharathi? What's the protest that you're taking about? Vensatry (Talk) 10:57, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Okay, i got it fully wrong again perhaps. One drunken man, who says that he stalled a film's release because that hero gave "message" instead of sticking to the regular fares. Who played that role? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 11:51, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Santhana Bharathi. Kamal's aide while he ghost-directs some of his films – on the lines of Singeetham, PC, KSR, etc., :) Vensatry (Talk) 12:43, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

Just to be clear, he is neither a good actor nor a great director, IMO. Vensatry (Talk) 12:44, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
I don't comment on his skills, but surely that scene was a satire on the ones who demanded the stalling of the releases of Viswaroopam and Uttama Villain. I intended to say that previously, but i lost it in translation. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:47, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

When did Balu Mahendra marry Shoba?

Both their Wikipedia articles state 1978 in the infoboxes. But I found no source for that. In Balu Mahendra's article, it states that his "relationship with actress Shoba ended in 1980 after she committed suicide following their marriage". The supporting source does not include "1978". It would be great if you found a source for their DoM (date of marriage) rather than delete the info. Kailash29792 (talk) 08:07, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Since it was a Ragasiya Thirumanam, I don't think it was widely covered in the media. You may remove the dates if you want. Vensatry (Talk) 09:41, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

Mayabazar

Hi Vensatry. Hope you are doing well. From your comments at the Mayabazar and Mullum Malarum FACs, i understood that you are claiming that G. Dhananjayan's book The Best of Tamil Cinema, 1931 to 2010 is a WP:MIRROR publication where you said "Although the latter had won a special mention at the 62nd National Film Awards, it looks like a WP:MIRROR, as the book paraphrases stuff from Wikipedia articles and the NFA archives of Directorate of Film Festivals". Can you please prove it? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 09:18, 2 December 2015 (UTC)

I accept that both of Danny's books cannot fully qualify as a RS due to numerous inaccuracies and his reliance on Wikipedia in most places, but he has not acknowledged/confessed to taking information from us. Until he confesses, and his mistakes are proven, or if he is exposed, we cannot consider his books as unreliable. Kailash29792 (talk) 09:23, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
Vensatry, the point is simple. I can reduce its usage at the moment but i cannot remove it unless it is proved non reliable. I'm not sure whether Dhananjayan comes out in the open regarding this. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 09:27, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
Look at this article, created by me. Just compare the description of the director in the book with our article. This is just a sample; a lot of portions in the book has text spun off from Wikipedia and other copyrighted sources. If the book doesn't provide attribution, it doesn't mean we should assume it's not a mirror publication. Pavanjandhyala, the relevant guideline says 'Copies of Wikipedia are not reliable sources and not acceptable external links in articles per the verifiability policy.' Hope that clarifies things. As for this in-joke, it's not my duty. :) As a Wikipedian, I'm only concerned about this project. Vensatry (Talk) 11:56, 2 December 2015 (UTC)
