Hey there, I saw you worked on the article, firstly thanks for fixing the professor Herzig section. Secondly, I saw you removed lots of quotes and info. Can you please explain the reasoning regarding the removal of lots of info? I did not want to do a partial revert without understanding the reasoning. Also of course I appreciate the dedication :). Homerethegreat (talk) 08:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out.
The quotes were generally overly-detailed. As most were eyewitness accounts, this can easily go into WP:DUE issues. Additionally, when possible, we should summarize rather than include long quotes (see MOS:QUOTE). I did my best not to alter the meaning of the quotes when I trimmed them.
Removals in the "international law" section were, again, related to content that was overly-detailed. Additionally, this likely verges on WP:SYNTH without sources referring to both these specific international laws and the October 7 events. I think trimming that content helps it be more encyclopedic.
I think that covers most of the trimming I did. Let me know if you have any more questions. Wracking talk! 09:20, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation. I decided to include quotes since I felt it was best to not try and summarize them which I felt may not accurately reflect their statement. Of course I appreciate the help. It's complicated and I'm happy you worked on making it more encyclopedic. Do you think there is no room at all for a quote? I want to continue building the article and I feel its better to include quotes so if you could share your decision process it could help me decide when or how to include relevant info. Thanks for the big help :). Homerethegreat (talk) 21:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
There are still many quotes in the article, but constantly citing individual witness testimonies is not very encyclopedic (especially WP:DUE), especially if those testimonies aren't notable/widely reported themselves. Wracking talk! 04:12, 5 December 2023 (UTC)
I understand this point, however regarding the short description, I think it's best that there is a short description. Can you explain your reasoning? Homerethegreat (talk) 08:18, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Diyac.arts

Hi, it is indeed a violation of NPOV, it may be true that the "comparison" has been made, but the sources cited are neither academic nor scholarly. Secondly, the comment has nothing to do with the topic of the article. It's purely an injection of opinion cited as fact. If this statement and citation were to be used (although it is not relevant to the article), it would have to also cite and quote a source that more accurate presents Milei's political views of which are radically different from both Bolsanaro and Trump [1]. Javier Milei's positions himself as an Anarcho-Capitalist [2], Libertarian[3], and holds true to Austrian School of Economics [4]. So if there's an injection of unresearched bias, without presenting both perspectives. Then it is indeed a violation NPOV.[5] Diyac.arts (talk) 20:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

Please discuss this at Talk:Inauguration of Javier Milei. Wracking talk! 20:46, 6 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Ariadne000

Hi Wracking. I have spent quite a few hours translating the Spanish article, references, and footnotes on Caridad Mercader (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridad_Mercader#CITAREFGorkin2001). The English stub had an annotation asking for a translation of the lengthy Spanish article and I decided to do it on a whim. (I looked up Ramon Mercader when he was cited as Trotsky's assassin in a documentary on Stalin and clicked on the link to his mother's Wikipedia page out of curiosity. Caridad Mercader--a Soviet agent who influenced her son to assassinate Trotsky--made the "Mother from Hell" in The Manchurian Candidate look like Mother of the Year.) (English version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caridad_Mercader)

Completely underestimating the amount of effort involved, I easily translated the Spanish article into English using Google Translate and editing the translation for sense and flow (I am bilingual in English and Spanish). The challenge has been in updating and entering the hundreds of references in the Spanish article to build the list of references and bibliography in the English version. The numbering is different in the Spanish and English versions since the English stub contained footnotes independent of the Spanish version. I have placed the original Spanish reference numbers within the English text so I can use them to enter the Spanish references into the automatic numbering scheme.

The "Named References" mechanism is not working for me. I have spent hours reentering references that should have just been a matter of clicking on "Named References" and entering page citations. At present there are error messages citing the duplicate entries and I could really use the help of an expert to guide me in cleanup and before I lose 93 references that I have already re-entered painstakingly. There remain about 70 additional references and 50 footnotes with English translations to re-enter. Would you please take a look at the references entered so far and advise me on how to best clean up the error messages and come up with a cleanly generated reference list and bibliography.

Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. (Note: After I have entered the references and bibliography, I also have to upload photos from the Spanish article into the English version. I have left the captions within the English text for the photos that will be uploaded in the final stage.)

Ariadne000 (talk) 03:20, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi Ariadne000,
Thanks for reaching out, and I apologize for my delayed response. I'm also English/Spanish bilingual and have done a bit of translation both ways. I understand how onerous the translation process can be and thank you for your efforts.
A few general translation/formatting notes:
  • English Wikipedia explicitly says that machine translations must be edited by humans (WP:MACHINE); you're on the right track here, but more editing of the text may be required. (I haven't reviewed the text, so you may have already done this!)
  • For future reference, I have found the Content Translation tool really helpful. Once you have more experience (500 edits), you can try it for your next translation. For translation to English Wikipedia, manual translation is not enabled in the tool, but I found it really helpful for translating templates and references.
  • If you want to link to an article that does not exist in English, use the template {{ill}} (inter-language link). For example, {{ill|Indiano|es}} produces Indiano. If Indiano is created, a bot will come by and replace the template with just the link! It's a very useful template. You can also use it for other languages— I most often use pt (Portuguese), de (German), and fr (French).
  • The images do not need to be re-uploaded to English Wikipedia, as they are all in Wikimedia Commons. Instead, you just use the pattern [[File:NAME|thumb|CAPTION]], where NAME is the file's name when you open it in Wikimedia Commons (for example, File:Capitania General Barcelona - façana.JPG) and CAPTION is whatever caption you've written. "thumb" specifies that the image size will be a thumbnail (the default for English Wikipedia).
The following syntax produces the following image:
[[File:Capitania General Barcelona - façana.JPG|thumb|Your caption here]]

Your caption here
As for your referencing troubles:
I hope some of this is helpful, even if I'm unable to help with the citation templates. Best, Wracking talk! 05:42, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Hi Wracking. Thanks for responding. I didn't have a problem with translation. Google Translate did a good job and I just edited to fix improper translation and flow.
I have uploaded the images from the Spanish article into the English version without any difficulty. I tried adding a photo of Caridad as an young adult and as a older woman, but I'm not sure it will pass scrutiny for copyright, even though the older image dates to 1910 and the newer is earlier than 1978 (I have received a notice that they are under review and suspect they will be deleted).
I was able to do the footnotes without any problem, as well as the links between terms and related Wikipedia articles.
My remaining problem are the references because I didn't properly define the long form in the beginning and created several long forms of the same citation that now causes a problem when I try to use the short form because it creates an error that the mechanism has a conflict with which long reference form to use. I will probably have to go back and delete all but one of the long forms where there is duplication so that the short form for each refers back to only one. I will probably take a breather before I do this because my frustration level is now high. I will reach out to Wham2001 when I decide to tackle the reference cleanup.
I definitely chose the wrong article to begin such a complicated expansion of a stub (I just had a passing interest in the subject and ended up spending much more time than anticipated), Up until now I have done much simpler additions to plot summaries that didn't require all the coding skills. I have learned a lot in the process, however, and will pick simpler articles until I have a stronger skill set.
Again, thanks for your encouragement and guidance. Ariadne000 (talk) 06:13, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
I can fix the sfn multiple-target errors when I get the chance – hopefully the next day or two. Best, Wham2001 (talk) 13:45, 13 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Wham2001, that would be very much appreciated. I learned my lesson to define the long form first and then do the short forms. what threw me is that there was an existing "Summary" with references on which I had to build and I was too green at the beginning to realize I was going about it in the most difficult way possible. Ariadne000 (talk) 07:53, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
In the end I was too slow and User-duck fixed the references before I got to them. I think that the article is now looking very good! Best, Wham2001 (talk) 10:56, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Robi1284

Do you mind holding off on edits on the John Bauters page? I and a few other students at Michigan State University are making edits for a finals grade. Some of the edits you're making can harm our grades. Not to mention, some of the information I included was relevant and had better grammar. Thanks. Robi1284 (talk) 22:02, 15 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi Robi1284, I am bringing Ian (Wiki Ed) into this conversation about John Bauters.
I'm holding off on doing any further editing on the page as it doesn't appear to be productive. I think I overstepped, and I apologize if my edits were confusing. I do feel that your classmates have failed to operate in a collaborative nature with the rest of Wikipedia by continually reinstating your edits.
Your grade should not be based on your edits being "successfully" published on Wikipedia. My editing should have no implication on your grades.[1]
If you want to discuss the relevance and grammatical quality of your edits, that is a separate conversation that I am also willing to have. Thanks, Wracking talk! 22:20, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping Wracking. He's correct, Robi1284, your grade shouldn't be based on what "sticks" and you need to edit in a collaborative way, as part of the community. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:30, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

A message from Zakâriæ

In the article about the best African player, I think that putting the story of the coach and the club has nothing to do with the page dedicated to the best player only. You can put the story of the coach and the club on the official page. Zakâriæ (talk) 12:52, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

Hello Zakâriæ, The content is about a boycott of the awards in response to a perceived snub in the African Footballer of the Year category, so the content is relevant to the article. Please discuss further issues at Talk:African Footballer of the Year. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Wracking talk! 18:10, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
True, but you also mention the coach, which is outside the topic of the article, which only talks about the best player af, The important thing is that it's okay, thanks for the answer. Zakâriæ (talk) 22:34, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
