Uploading an image

edit

Hello, I would like to upload an image to the Wikimedia Commons. I am pretty sure that this image is provided freely because it is the logo of a company and they provide a download link on an images gallery page where it is. Could someone take a look at this and tell me whether this logo is indeed eligible to be added, and if so, under what license? Thank you. The URL is www.cumminsallison.com/about/image_gallery.htm, and I am interested in the first image (the logo). Dtm1234 (talk) 03:07, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You're right that there is some implication one can draw from the way they provide their images as downloads, but this is simply insufficient for here or the Commons. In the copyright realm everything is assumed fully and non-freely copyrighted unless you have specific and verifiable information on the free-license it is released under (or that it is released into the public domain). We need specific, positive evidence. In its absence these images cannot be uploaded to the Commons. Here, we do allow certain copyrighted images to be uploaded and used under a claim of fair use, but this is only allowed under very particular circumstances, in compliance with each factor listed at WP:NFCC. I do not see any possibility of these images meeting these standards. So unless you can find that positive evidence I was talking about, I'm afraid you cannot use these images.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:18, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Want to work on Translation from English to Tamil

Hello team,

There are many articles in Wikipedia that has been written/translated in my native language, Tamil. However, I see lot of pages/topics which I feel a Tamil translated content is required. Article deletion

edit

Can someone, please, tell me how to completely delete an article that I was creating. It keeps appearing in google's search engine when I type in a key phrase. I have decided not to submit the article and would like to totally remove. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DeCollingwood (talkcontribs) 08:04, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted the proposed article. We have no control over how long search engines will continue to list it and provide a cached version.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 09:03, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How do I reply to an administrator who is challenging my insertion of an image? I can see nothing on my Talk page that allows me to reply. Ravel59 (talk) 08:16, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can reply on your talk page just like this. You can also click on the "talk" next to their name and leave a message on their talk page. However, it might be a good idea to read the policies they linked to you. It seems to explain clearly why they did what they did. --Kinkykitteh (talk) 08:31, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to be manager

Improve your ability to communicate in written English, so that you can ask for what you want more precisely. Britmax (talk) 12:18, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You could have a read of Help:Contents/Getting started although going by your userpage I don't think Wikipedia is what you're after, there are no paid positions or hiring involved, everyone is a volunteer, and there are no real managers of wikipedia, the closest thing is the janitors--Jac16888 Talk 12:43, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

URL contains [ and ] characters

edit

An external link in an article is being broken because [ and ] characters within the url are being parsed as wiki markup. Is there a workaround? Roger (talk) 13:52, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you can fix that by replacing [ with %5B and ] with %5D when you type or paste the URL. Deor (talk) 14:36, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

URLs containing certain characters will display and link incorrectly unless those characters are encoded. For example, a space must be replaced by %20.

sp " ' , ; < > ? [ ]
%20 %22 %27 %2c %3b %3c %3e %3f %5b %5d
Single apostrophes do not need to be encoded; multiples will be parsed as italic or bold markup

The link button   on the enhanced editing toolbar will encode a link.

The URL must start with a supported URI scheme. http:// and https:// are always supported. gopher://, irc://, ircs://, ftp://, news:// and mailto: will create a link and an icon but require an agent registered in the browser. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:48, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion

I am confused by the speedy deletion. My understanding was that the importance standard was different than standard notability. Is there a difference? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.89.61.94 (talk) 15:37, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Google hasn't indexed it yet. Could this be related to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Wikipedia Page Not Showing Up in Google or Bing Search? -- John of Reading (talk) 20:27, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That was rolled back (temporarily) so the page no longer has a noindex command in the source. It will probably be indexed sometime in the future. About An Article about Me

edit

HI My Name is Shahram Aazam , I can Send to Wiki representative My Documents that shows my identification. There is an article about me that changes so many time and even some one added some false information about me, I would like to ask you complacently remove that biography about me or I need to Copyright it , other wise I have to take legal action angst Wikipedia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shahramazam (talkcontribs) 17:49, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We have no article by that name, but we do have an article Shahram Azam. Discussion of that article should take place at Talk:Shahram Azam. Wikipedia has editorial policies that will often help to resolve your concern, as well as many users willing to help, and a wide range of escalation processes:just click anywhere in this sentence to be led to further detailed guidance. In the meantime, rather than threatening to employ litigation, you should always first attempt to resolve disputes using Wikipedia's dispute resolution procedures. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:55, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Move picture from Wikimedia Commons to article page

edit

Hi,

I am writing an article & I was wondering, how do I take a Wikimedia Commons picture & insert it on my article's page? Do I save it to my desktop or is there a transfer button?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marketingnes (talkcontribs) 18:25, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can just wikilink it. [[File:imagename.jpg|thumb|right|Caption here.]] type thing. You can also adjust the size by adding |300px| for 300 wide and set center or left instead of right. There are other options, but these I find the simplest.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:41, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And if you're putting it into an infobox, then there may be easier ways to do it. Check on whatever infobox you intend to use. Some just require the file name while others require you use the "File:" prefix as well. But basically, if an image is on Commons, there's no difference to putting it in an article. It's largely transparent as far as the code goes. Dismas|(talk) 18:44, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You link to it directly in the article - it does not need to be "transferred". Commons pictures are available to all other Wkimedia projects. This page explains how to use images in articles. Roger (talk) 18:42, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is it ok if an employee of a company edits the company page within guidelines?

edit

Would it be a conflict of interest if I and my staff were to edit the Super 8 Hotels page? We will respect and learn the appropriate rules regarding site use and editing if you give us some time to figure them out and understand we may make some mistakes. As a franchisee of Super 8 I would like to see the Super 8 page be as accurate and up-to-date as possible. Numerous issues have been brought to my attention, most startling is the title of the article, as that has never been the name of the Super 8 company. It was at one point Super 8 Motels, and today is Super 8 Worldwide.67.142.235.68 (talk) 18:27, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's a slippery slope but not completely forbidden. For one, as you've pointed out, you have a conflict of interest. See WP:COI for more on that. Also, accounts cannot be shared and must not have promotional user names. See WP:USERNAME for more. Also, you can't take out things that you feel don't cast a good light on your company just because they are unflattering. See WP:NPOV. Dismas|(talk) 18:42, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The "safest" way to do what you propose is to suggest the changes you think need to be done on the article's Talk page. Roger (talk) 18:46, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You may be best off adding a Template:Request edit template to the talk page with your updates listed below.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:47, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
@;User:Ryan Vesey I'm sorry but I don't agree with your advice at all, King4057 is actively soliciting paid editing on his user page. Roger (talk) 18:52, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Do you know much about this issue? King4057 is one of the most ethical editors I have had experience with and has given great assistance to COI editors. Ryan Vesey Review me! 19:31, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Assistance" for payment! My concern is more about your actively "advertising" for him. There are far more acceptable ways the OP can be helped that does not involve them paying for "services". It seems like you are unaware that many WP editors regard paid editing as inherently COI and thus unacceptable. But anyway we're drifting off the topic here - the OP has been given a quite a lot of info to follow up. Roger (talk) 19:54, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Woah, I was not suggesting that he seek assistance for payment, I was suggesting that he ask for some advice on how to edit without COI. King4057 has actively done that, free of charge, and is currently assisting with an essay in progress to help paid editors or COI editors edit in a productive manner. Ryan Vesey Review me! 20:39, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WP:COI is the main guideline; there is a lot of advice on editing when you have a COI, including a link to Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:25, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for template to link to English version's Good Article

edit

I've editing Wikipedia for some time, and got Folding@home up to Good Article status back in April. The article has versions in many other languages, which are all in a pretty dismal state, and I'd like to put something on those that tells readers that the English version is more complete and encyclopedic than their version. Back in April, I went to all other language versions and if a Talk page existed, I used Google Translate and left a message in English and in their native language telling them about this. I checked just now and no one has replied to any of them. I believe there is some sort of template that says something along the lines of "This article has a more complete version in another language. Consider translating it to this page." but I don't know what the template is. I'm hoping that I can stick it on all other language versions, but I've never done anything like this before, so I'd appreciate some help. Thanks in advance. Jesse V. (talk) 20:46, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I found Category:Expand by language Wikipedia templates and Template:Rough translation. Is that what I need? Does such a thing exist in the other language wikis, and how can I help with this situation? I'm not fluent in another language. Jesse V. (talk) 21:06, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There are templates that show which articles in the interwiki links are GA/FA. You can add these templates in all the languages it's written in (you can find these templates in the interwiki links for Template:Link GA). - Purplewowies (talk) 21:27, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'll take a look at that. Jesse V. (talk) 21:37, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Layout errors on A14 (road) article on some browsers

edit

People have been noticing inconsistent layout issues for the A14 road (England) article on some browsers with others being just fine. The issues, which have recently changed are outlined on the talk page in the 'Blank page in Chrome?' section and the 'Layout error?' section. We have had no helpful responses on the talk page from other contributors and I feel it is likely to be something a bit tricky to do with templates or something. Could someone take a look at the issue or alert the relevant people. Thanks. PeterEastern (talk) 22:01, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a {{clear}} to the end of the section, which solves the problem for me, but I don't know what the cause was. You might have more luck at WP:VPT if noone here can explain. BencherliteTalk 23:12, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, and that does seem to have sorted it for some strange reason. I will see if anyone at VPT can figure out why! PeterEastern (talk) 06:34, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
