Wiki for islands needs to include how they generate electric power..

There are often fairly comprehensive discussions on demographics, geography, weather, economy, education, etc but almost never how the island is powered and the cost of electricity - which is a key metric for the living conditions for heat, cool and the powering of lights and communications.. Gross.larry you are free to add such information to any article where you think it is needed, but be sure to support it from reliable sources. Or you can suggest on the article's talk page adding such information.

By the way, these aren't "Wiki" they are "Wikipedia articles". "Wiki" refers to a type of software. "A wiki" is a web site set up using such software. There are many many wikis that are not part of Wikipedia. DES ^(talk)_{DESiegel Contribs} 02:51, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

How do I report users?

using old news and advertisments

Hi My employer has a number of sources that we want to reference in the edit I made to the EFTPOS history page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFTPOS . These sources are:

A photocopy of a Asianet press release and short newspaper article pertaining to the release Photocopies of two advertisements that appeared in newspapers about mobile EFTPOS A photcopy of a webpage article on mobile Eftpos that no longer exists A short newspaper article about mobile Eftpos where it is impossible to identify the publication details

I wanted to be able to add these images to the references list on the EFTPOS history page but cannnot find a way to upload them even thought I think they may fall under the 'fair use' catagory. NPharaoh, there is no need to upload such source documents, and doing so would almost surely be a copyright violation. There is no need for cited sources to be available online. You can simply cite by title of article, name of containing work (such as the newspaper), date of publication, and page number. If available, you can add the author's name, and the publisher if this is not redundant (for example, listing that The New York Times is published by The New York Times Co adds nothing of value). You can use {{cite news}} or {{cite press release}}. For a web page no longer live, you can use the internet archive's "wayback machine" to find an archive copy, and if one is found, use {{cite web}}

However, you mention "my employer". Please comply with our policy on paid editing. Make the required disclosures before making any further edits to the page, or indeed to any page you are being paid to edit. If i have misunderstood, and you are not being paid to edit (which includes being assigned to make edits as part of your job, even if there is no extra pay for the editing). Links in refn?

I was trying to put an external link to Google Books in a refnote, like so: (Sahaja article)

But it generates an error: "Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page without content in them (see the help page)."

The problem is that the value for the unnamed parameter in the refn template contains an = sign and this is not permitted. See the first bullet point at Help:Template#Usage hints and workarounds. The usual workround is to supply it as a named parameter 1 like this:

{{refn|group=note|1=See also [[Mouni Sadhu]] (2005), ''Meditation: An Outline for Practical Study'', [https://books.google.com/books?id=ZOIa46E1vFUC&lpg=PA1&pg=PA92#v=twopage&q&f=false pg. 92-93]}}

So far as I can see the refn documentation doesn't say this, presumably because it a matter relating to all templates. Thincat (talk) 10:41, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Sure, but refn's explicit function is to work around technical limitation of ref tags. The fact that it has its own technical limitations is not at all obvious... I've added a note to its documentation. --Mathnerd314159 (talk) 04:04, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

New subtopics for country profiles

I would like articles about countries to include subtopics on human rights and women's rights (women in the workforce, access to healthcare and abortion, etc.), but I can't figure out where to make the suggestion. @Hattrick: You can make suggestions about a specific country article by clicking the "Talk" tab on the article. You can make suggestions for Wikipedia:WikiProject Countries#Structure and guidelines at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries. Note that articles are edited independently and editors of an article are not obligated to follow a WikiProject guideline, and may never have seen it. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:11, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Please do not delete my site - revision requested

Hi there,

I created a wiki article which was reported. I think this page should not be speedily deleted because it is totally based on facts. Please note that this is my first article on Wikipedia and it may need some changes so please help me on how to/which parts to modify in order to be proper but not delete automatically. There are some useful links on your user talk page, including to WP:Your first article. Haraszthy Vineyards has already been deleted, but your sandbox draft at User:Cserfranciska/sandbox still exists. It obviously isn't fit to be an article because it contains no references to published reliable sources independent of the subject. Some of the language is blatantly promotional, so if that is what Haraszthy Vineyards looked like it is no surprise that it was deleted. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:22, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

• First, review our guideline on notability, our policy on verifibility, and our specific guideline on the notability of people. Consider whether your subject clearly meets the standards listed there.
• Second, read how to create Your First Article and referencing for beginners and again consider if you want to go ahead.
• Third, If you have any connection or affiliation with the subject, disclose it in accordance with our guideline on Conflict of interest. If you have been or expect to be paid for making edits, or are making them as part of your job, disclose this according to the strict rules of the Paid-contribution disclosure. This is absolutely required; omitting it can result in you being blocked from further editing.
• Fourth, gather sources. You want independent, professionally published, reliable sources with each discussing the subject in some detail. If you can't find several such sources, stop; an article will not be created! Sources do NOT need to be online, or in English, although it is helpful if at least some are. The "independent" part is vital. Wikipedia does not consider as independent sources such as press releases, or news stories based on press releases, or anything published by the subject itself or an affiliate of the subject. Strictly local coverage is also not preferred. Regional or national newspapers or magazines, books published by mainstream publishers (not self-published), or scholarly journals are usually good. So are online equivalents of these. (Additional sources may verify particular statements but not discuss the subject in detail. But those significant detailed sources are needed first.)
• Fifth, use the article wizard to create a draft under the articles for creation project. This is always a good idea for an inexperienced editor, but in the case of an editor with a conflict of interest it is essential.
• Sixth, use the sources gathered before (and other sources you may find along the way) to write the article. Cite all significant statements to sources. Do not express opinions or judgements, unless they are explicitly attributed to named people or entities, preferably in a direct quotation, and cited to a source. Do not use puffery or marketing-speak. Provide page numbers, dates, authors and titles for sources to the extent these are available. A title is always needed.
• Seventh, when (well perhaps if) your draft is declined, pay attention to the comments of the reviewer, and correct the draft and resubmit it. During this whole process, if you face any unresolvable editing hurdles, or cannot comprehend any editing issue, feel free to post a request at the Teahouse or the help desk and ask the regulars. Repeat this until the draft passes review.

Marvel?s Spider-Man

Hi,

I typed |marvels spider man| into the search box just now, and get two suggested matches in the context dropdown:

"Marvel's Spider-Man"

"Marvel’s Spider-Man"

The difference being the type of apostrophe used - or maybe only one is properly called an apostrophe? One goes to a disambiguation page, the other directly to one of the disambiguated articles.

To make matters worse, in the dropdown itself (at least on my computer and as far as I can tell), the two symbols are actually identical in appearance.

It seems unlikely that this situation is intentional... but not impossible, cf for instance "Hawaii Five-[Zero]" versus "Hawaii Five-[Oh]", which I reckon is comparable in kind, though not quite in degree.

Either way, I'm hesitant to tackle this myself (if tackling it needs). :)

ps: I notice that they look more or less identical in my post also, meaning that the only place they become readily distinguishable is the edit box. Which uses a significantly different font (Courier?), so that, at least, makes sense, in its way. :)

Searching by edit size

Is there a way, maybe an external tool, that can order an edit list (user contributions, article history and/or recent changes, etc.) so as to see the largest edits first ? Thank you !--Nonztop (talk) 15:45, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

@Nonztop: If it's of interest, xTools will show the list of top editors of any article and access their edits. Select the History tab of the article concerned; External tools - Revision history statistics; scroll down to Top editors; the list may be sorted on the right-hand column (Added Bytes); then for each editor near the top of the sorted list, click on "topedits" in the second column to see their individual edits, which are likely to include most of the major edits to the article: Noyster (talk), 19:34, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

Frideswide Square

From Frideswide Square go west along Botley Road, under the railway line and over the Thames. After a quarter of a mile, you will see the church of St. Frideswide on your left. It takes its name from Frithuswith, the first abbess of a monastery that was somewhere in the area until Henry VIII dissolved it. Maproom (talk) 20:46, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Is there a reason why the border of these templates flicker and disappear every so often? This has been bugging me for a while.--Nevé–selbert 22:14, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

I haven't experienced it in Firefox. In some browsers, if you zoom to less than 100% then a line 1 pixel wide may sometimes disappear. Zooming to 90% may for example remove 10% of 1-pixel lines when the browser decides how to reduce the size. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:48, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

edits being taken down

Hi Wikipedia

I have been trying to update the wikipedia page of New Zealand sculptor Chris Booth, with his permission. In late July I completely revised the page which had much out of date and some incorrect information and was set up by someone unknown to the artist, this was re-edited and reverted to the original and misleading text.

Yesterday I re-edited the text, with the permission of Chris Booth, only to find the same thing happen. I would like to add in more correct and up to date information and images of Booth's sculptures but need to find out why someone keeps on removing information.

Can you help please?

Chris Booth doesn't own the article. See WP:COI. Wikipedia articles cite and summarize professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources. Ian.thomson (talk) 23:10, 21 August 2017 (UTC)

Please keep in mind, KLMC, that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and the page you refer to is an encyclopedia article. The edits you made to that article might be appropriate for a résumé or a social media page, but they are not written in the dispassionate, disinterested style that one would expect to see in an encyclopedia. Hello, Kelly. It is entirely appropriate that the article should have been written by someone unknown to the artist. The artist and their friends and associates have essentially no role in the creation and editing of a Wikipedia about them: they should limit themselves to making suggetions for improvements on the article's talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 09:38, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
