T!m Ned Wiki

edit

Hello,

I am new to Wiki editing. I am just trying to validate that the current references/citations on this page I created will be considered creditable. I continue to get the warning that I need to had more cites (which i can continue to add) but wondering how many will be needed to be considered. Thus far, 2 independent blog sites, Apples iTunes, SoundCloud and a record labels web site have been referenced.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by VergeCity (talkcontribs) 00:12, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

VergeCity, sorry you're having the problems, but to be honest, this article will probably have trouble remaining on the site. Look closely at the Wikipedia "notability" guidance and also the specific guidance on musicians, which says the type of person you're writing about should be: "the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself." Unfortunately, the sources you've given do not meet Wikipedia's requirements to establish a person's notability. Articles and reviews in authoritative magazines and newspapers, on or offline, are the type of sources needed. Also, if by any chance you know him, or work for him, or are his relative, that would be a problem called conflict of interest. But even if that's not the case, Mr. Ned needs more coverage by independent reliable sources to be more seriously considered for an article. DonFB (talk) 01:22, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Confirmation email not being received

edit

I've tried multiple times over the past two days to confirm an email address for my account. I need this done so I can apply for JSTOR privileges. Unfortunately, no confirmation email seems to have made it into my inbox. The email address (a Gmail) is correct, and there's nothing in my spam folder. My account has existed for over a year. What could be the problem? Is there some way to circumnavigate this process and "manually" confirm my email? -Indy beetle (talk) 00:45, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Indy beetle: The issue at phab:T66795 has caused Yahoo and sometimes other mail services like Gmail to block mail from Wikipedia. Can you try another mail provider? Comparison of webmail providers lists some examples. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:04, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Empathise with you. I was granted JSTOR privileges but could never log in. --Aspro (talk) 23:24, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What does that tag mean? e.g. [1] 86.20.193.222 (talk) 02:31, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It means the edit was made with the mw:2017 wikitext editor. Pppery 02:50, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I now have some bedtime reading. I hate VE, but I shall try to remain open-minded about this new thing. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 03:12, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable source

edit

I need a second opinion if this[1] website is considered a reliable source. It is the only link that supports the Clinton health care plan of 1993 being dubbed as "Hillarycare". Apologies about the citation, I couldn't figure out the code for external links.

You might be better off posting something at WP:RSN about reliability of The American Prospect. As for "Hillarycare", I was able to find this and this from a Google search. there seem to be many more references to it, but I'm not sure what you're exactly looking for. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:30, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I would accept it as a reliable source. Take note that by their own statement, "We aim to advance liberal and progressive goals." So, they're not a neutral source, but that's ok. Wikipedia rules say sources don't have to be neutral, and a biased source can even be quite useful in providing a sourced point of view on a controversy. Just be aware that all their articles will probably espouse a lib point of view about something, so you might need to look for sourced balance in whatever WP article you use Prospect for. DonFB (talk) 04:40, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to the both of your for your help. To answer your question, Marchjuly, a request to make a redirect under the name "Hillarycare" to the article linked above was created. I just wanted to make sure before I went through with creating it. Boomer VialHolla! We gonna ball! 04:50, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Note also that redirects don't need to be neutral language. TigraanClick here to contact me 12:53, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Subject "lead" still gets rendering failure when generating PDF

edit

Subject line describes the problem... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.237.31.92 (talk) 06:49, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is the first post by your IP address since 2007. On which page does it happen? Are you using "Create a book", or the "Download as PDF" link under "Print/export" on the page? PrimeHunter (talk) 13:05, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I was editing an article on Yvonne Rudellat which includes a mention of Raymond Flower. I wanted to insert a link to an already-existing WP article on Flower but when I did so using " " the link was not recognised by the system, perhaps because the Flower article is in French (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Flower). It seems to me that a link would add value. How do I do it? Exbrum (talk) 09:02, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Exbrum, try this: Raymond Flower. DonFB (talk) 09:48, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Exbrum and DonFB: I believe the most common way for this is interlanguage link Template. In your example it would be Raymond Flower, which displays as Raymond Flower [fr]
Well thanks Joseph, that's good to know. DonFB (talk) 10:25, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism Warnings

edit

How do you warn editors for vandalism? I just undid a spam edit but am entirely unsure as to how to proceed now - I think I should probably at least say something to the user :P Titanium Wolf (talk) 13:26, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The page, Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace, is a list of the User talk page warning templates. ~ GB fan 13:30, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's also OK to just go to the other editor's talk page and tell him in your own words (but politely) your assessment of and concerns about his edit. You don't have to use a template. Herostratus (talk) 14:22, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pupils of Nadia Boulanger

edit

Hello - this is my first time adding a link to a Wikipedia site. I added a link to the Pupils of Nadia Boulanger site but I can't figure out how to get it to appear under the right alphabetical category. My link is to student Harold Evans - and it was placed at the top of the page when I wanted it under "E". Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Harveykay (talkcontribs) 16:58, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A new member gets added to the category not by editing the category page, but by editing the article about the new member, adding to the foot of the member's article. It appears, however, that there isn't (yet) an article on your Harold Evans, so if there isn't an article his article can't be included in the category. --David Biddulph (talk) 17:16, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Harveykay: Hello, does the Harold Evans you refer to have a Wikipedia article? If he does and is a pupil of Boulanger, then the code would be added to his page in a section accessed at the end of the page where other categories will appear. Subjects are not added directly at the category page, and subjects without a Wiki article cannot be added. Eagleash (talk) 17:19, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We don't seem to have an article about a musician called Harold Evans. If/when we did, I think the right place for this connection would be adding him to List_of_music_students_by_teacher:_A_to_B#Nadia_Boulanger - but only if/when there was an article about him.86.20.193.222 (talk) 18:27, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It would correctly be added to that page, if an article existed, as well as being added to the category. Eagleash (talk) 03:12, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Electoral Commission (United Kingdom) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I've removed the executive names, as they were incorrect, not referenced, and not the names shown on their website here.
We currently do not have an article about Claire Bassett, so I don't think it is appropriate to add her name there - also basing this on Google searches of news, she does not seem a particularly notable public figure.86.20.193.222 (talk) 18:33, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can I create "Did you mean?" redirect, like type "Taiwan Taoyuan I" redirect to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport?, or Tokaido Sh redirect to Tokaido Shinkansen??

@UY4Xe8VM5VYxaQQ: Yes, if you think it's reasonably likely someone might type that to find it. Redirects are cheap. See Wikipedia:Redirect, which shows "How to make a redirect" 86.20.193.222 (talk) 18:49, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I mean search suggest redirect UY4Xe8VM5VYxaQQ (talk) 08:09, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@UY4Xe8VM5VYxaQQ: If there is only one likely target page, we don't bother saying "Did you mean..."; we just take them to the page.
If there are several potential targets, we make a disambiguation page, like for example James Small. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 11:16, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How to flag that a useful article has many factual errors

edit

The article "Battle of Barking Creek" has (at least some, perhaps many) factual errors that I do not have the knowledge to correct (see the article's talk page). How do I flag the article appropriately?Wyresider (talk) 20:45, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can tag specific sentences by placing fact at the end of the sentence. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 21:44, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Nihonjoe, but the article has some points that I know are wrong and others that I suspect may be wrong, and I feel that the article as a whole is correct in outline but erroneous in detail. I would like to flag the article as a whole accordingly. To focus on a few specifics would by implication exonerate the remainder, which may or may not be justified. Some specifics are discussed on the talk page. (The talk page might suggest that I know more about the topic than I do -- I researched in some detail only one or two statements in the article that stood out as being improbable -- so improbable prima facie as to call the authority of the article as a whole into question.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wyresider (talkcontribs) 22:55, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Wyresider: If you think there is a problem with the whole article, Disputed can be added tot he top of the page. Be sure to list specific problems on the talk page so anyone can help with fixing the issues. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:24, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Wyresider: Is this about the things you wrote on the talk page back in August 2015 (which seem to have been ignored), or is it about something else? 86.20.193.222 (talk) 23:21, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's a very interesting article, actually. And I see what you mean about the factual problems. I've asked for input from the MilHist folks (WikiProject Military history, which is a very active project). I'm also trying to order one of the books. Please monitor the talk page, I think people will be talking there within the next days...hopefully we can sort it out. See you on Talk:Battle of Barking Creek? 86.20.193.222 (talk) 00:28, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you both.
Nihonjoe -- 86.20.193.222 may find an expert willing to review and edit the article. If not, I will use Disputed within the article, as you suggest.
86.20.193.222 -- yes, it is about the things I wrote on the talk page. In a nutshell, it is a very interesting and (I believe) well written article, but it appears to have some, perhaps many, errors of fact. I do not have the knowledge to correct it, so I wrote up what I had found on the talk page in the hope that an expert in the subject would review and revise it. Many thanks for your help in this.

Ref number 11 in the main text looks wrong to me. Please alter is necessary. 139.216.210.155 (talk) 23:32, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Do you mean ""Mary taler perfekt dansk"? I may be seeing a different 11th ref to you; someone removed one recently. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 23:39, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

no - The page is definatley ==Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark== Ref number 11 in that page has a > sign next to it. This would not be correct. Please investigate Thanks 139.216.210.155 (talk) 23:44, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, you mean the part about "While studying in Tasmania", I see it now. I've removed it, because it was only referencing a blog post and a document on "Scribd", which are not reliable sources. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 00:02, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Help

edit

Anyone know how to get the names and numbers from Template:Edmonton Eskimos roster and put them in a list like they are at Template:Edmonton Eskimos roster navbox. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 23:36, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@WikiOriginal-9: Can you explain a bit more? You can click 'edit' on those, and could copy-paste the names across, if it needs updating or something. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 01:48, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm trying to figure out a way to automatically update the roster navbox by pulling names from the main roster template. A lua module perhaps? WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 01:50, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's clearer. I think you'd have a 3rd template, containing the actual names, and then these two templates would use the names from that.
Hopefully, someone will offer you help with it here. I could probably figure it out, but I'm sure others could do it much quicker. If nobody shows up, I'll see if I can find someone. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 03:29, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This probably wouldn't be too difficult for someone who knew what they were doing. If you look at the tempalte, each entry is formatted liked {CFL player|31|N|Calvin McCarty}. All you have to do is extract the number and name from each entry, and then sort the entries by number like at Template:Edmonton Eskimos roster navbox. This would save a lot of time in updating these templates. I think you might be able to have a lua module do this. WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 17:13, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
