How do I edit a template?

With NPB Roster Templates, I've been trying to edit them so I can add coaches like on the MLB roster templates but I don't know where to start or how to set the parameters.--Cynikles (talk) 01:51, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Cynikles:Many templates that create a "box" have a little "V.T.E" at the top right: that stands for "View", "Talk", and "Edit". Clicking on these will take you the template page, the template talk page, and directly to the template page in edit mode, respectively. For a tmeplate without V.T.E, find the name of the template by opening the source of the page that uses it and look for a name between double curly braces (e.g., {{Baltimore Orioles roster}}. Prepend "Template:" to that name to get the template page name, e.g., Template:Baltimore Orioles roster. Go there and hit edit to edit the template. The actual wikicode of templates ranges for trivial, to complex, and on up to incomprehensible. If you cannot figure out how to make the modification you need, you should probably discuss the modification on the template's talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 03:39, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Arch dude: I'm afraid this isn't much help. I know how to edit a template, but if I put in say |Manager=coaches, like you might on the MLB roster boxes, and it doesn't show up. The Japanese baseball taskforce and associates is also very inactive and it's difficult to find anyone that can help me meddle with the coding of the boxes to include coaches. I feel like I'm one of maybe 3-5 active Wikipedians actually making significant contributions to NPB stuff, hence why I came here for help...--Cynikles (talk) 05:11, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Cynikles:I think we are miss-communcating. You appear to know how to edit the template invocation in an article, i.e., the characters between the pairs of curly braces. But what you need in this case is to modify the source code of the template itself, not the invocation in some article or other, and modifyiny the template source code is what is usually meant by "modify a template." If a particular template is not coded to support a particular parameter, then adding that parameter to the template invocation will have no effect. -Arch dude (talk) 16:49, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Cynikles: Right now, it isn't possible. If you look at Template:MLB roster, there is a Coaches parameter. At Template:NPB roster, there isn't. I don't see a reason that it can't be added to the Template. The template itself hasn't been edited in almost 3 years. The last editor was Frietjes who appears to be an expert in Sports templates, so hopefully he will pop up here.Naraht (talk) 14:52, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

How do I copy the categories at the bottom of a talk page

@Peregrine Fisher: most categories are added at the very end of the article and can simply be copied from the article source in the usual fashion. (I usually hit "edit" on the last section in the article to see them.) However, some categories are added by templates anywhere in the article. Most of these categories should not be added "manually", because if the category is relevant, the template that adds it is probably useful in the target article. This is a matter if editorial judgement and nothing prevents you from adding them "manually". -Arch dude (talk) 03:24, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

1910 image crop, usage

I'd like to add to Wikimedia Commons a crop of an image on wikisource.

Specifically, I'd like to crop the "Do Not Covet" verse from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aleppo_Deut_1910_Photo.jpg (which contains more than just Deut. 5:18). From a prior case, where a non-English wiki had a photo of someone who died, I was told by the help desk to download it, then re-upload. Does this apply? Is there something different here (book published 1910, image used in Moshe Goshen-Gottstein)? Pi314m (talk) 03:40, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Pi314m: Until someone more knowledgeable about image rights comes along, I'll take a stab. The image at c:File:Aleppo Deut 1910 Photo.jpg has a public domain license, so I think you can download, crop, and upload a new one. You should reference the source in the proper place in the upload wizard and use the same license. Pi314m, you can either use the Commons:Project:CropTool, set to upload the crop as a new image, or download, crop yourself, and upload.

Everything that is stored on Commons, but not all files locally uploaded here, can be used to create derivative works - the advantage of the crop tool is that it will handle the attribution templates for you. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 07:54, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

You created an article about yourself in 2013 which duplicated an existing article, so it was turned into a redirect. If you are the boxer Freddie Fuller, the article about you is at Freddy Stephen Fuller. Note that autobiographical edits are strongly discouraged per the autobiography policy; you may make edit requests on the article talk page for any changes you feel are needed, if supported with independent reliable sources. 331dot (talk) 04:05, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Reversion to remove Vandalism reverted?

Hi There

This relates to a reversion I made to an article on North Shore Hospital

The following text was included by another user (125.236.242.113): Christopher Andrew Lawrence was born in the tall building (AKA Building 5) on June 12th 1974 at 14.20 hours. (builing [7]

The named party has no Wikipedia page, nor have they achieved anything of note to be deemed worthy.

I reverted to the previous edit, but this was then reverted by Suarez9348. I believe this to be in error. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:125.238.192.121

If this is allowed to stand, anyone who is born, died or had a procedure at this hospital could make notes like this.

Hi there I was doing a project on Caribbean music went to Wikipedia type (Music of Jamaica) and there was northing about Hip Hop there ? Reggae Dub or Dance Hall are the roots of Hip Hop the Jamaican took the style to New York take a look at the pioneers DJ Kool Herc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhisX4mVoDI and many more . Episode table template not appearing correctly

Since the most recent revision, the episode table template on the America's Next Top Model (season 10) page is not appearing correctly. I've looked at the wikitext and compared to previous revisions but I can't tell why this is happening. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Wizlardo (talk) 13:17, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

question re list of subpages for user page

Hi.How do I use a template to display all subpages for one particular sub-page in my user space, i.e. not ALL pages that are subpages of my main user page?

here's what i mean. I already know I can use {{List subpages|sm8900|user}} to display all sub-pages of my user page as a whole; i.e. to generate an actual list that will be displayed right on the page where that template is pasted. . and I know that {{subpages}} provides a link that one can click, to be taken to a page that provides a list of all sub-pages for that specific page, i.e. where that template was posted.

However, i do not know how to modify {{List subpages|sm8900|user}} in order to use it to display a list of all subpages for a page, on that page itself. Could you please advise? Let me know if you need more details. I need this info, for some info that that I am thinking of putting together, using some pages in my user space. simply adding /<subdirectory> restricts it to pages under that directory, I.E. {{List subpages|sm8900/task links|user}}. WelpThatWorked (talk) 17:03, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

If you don't give a pagename then the current page is default. If you say {{List subpages|sm8900/task links|user}} then it doesn't matter whether you put the code on the page itself or somewhere else. {{List subpages}} uses the MediaWiki feature Special:PrefixIndex. You can also use it directly like {{Special:PrefixIndex/User talk:Sm8900/task links}}. This works in all wikis. PrefixIndex only works on the supplied namespace so you don't get the talk page and non-talk page together. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:09, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

New official portrait of Ralph Henry Johnson

I have a new official portrait of Ralph H. Johnson (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ralph_H._Johnson&gettingStartedReturn=true) that needs to replace what is currently on his Wikipedia page. I cannot upload the image because it gets flagged for copyright I'm assuming. We (the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center) owns the copyright to the image I am trying to upload. How can I get this corrected? The new portrait was unveiled in a dedication ceremony on Jan. 31, 2020.

@RHJVAMC:Do you intend to license the copyright under CC-BY-SA? If so, you may upload it with no problems because you are the copyright owner. But CC-BY-SA is a very liberal license and will allow anyone to use the image for any purpose. If not, then you cannot upload it at all, because the only other option is "fair use". It is nonsensical for the copyright owner to do that, and in any event we do not accept fair-use images of living people. For CC-BY-SA, you may e-mail us as mentioned above, but you may also post the image on your own website along with a copyright notice that it is CC-BY-SA, and then point to that notice during the upload process. -Arch dude (talk) 16:35, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

• If the image is the official work of a US government employee created during the course of their duties, then the image is public domain and no permission needs to be sent. If this is a work-for-hire, and the VA Medical Center commissioned its creation by a third party, then we should need email confirmation from the VA demonstrating why they should own the copyright, and releasing the image under a free license. Otherwise, we would need email confirmation from the author themselves. GMG^talk 18:33, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@GreenMeansGo and RHJVAMC:The existing file of that name is an image of a photograph that is in the public domain. The image looks like the photo was made by a US Marine photographer before Johnson died in 1968, probably at graduation from AIT, and if so it is nearly contemporaneous with his death in battle. It's a really good picture (except for the fact that Marines wear silly hats). That file should not be replaced by an image of a portrait. If you load an image of the portrait, give it a new name. Whether or not we choose to use the new image in the Ralph H. Johnson article is a separate issue that will depend on editorial judgement. It might very well be used as a second image in the article. In my opinion, since we are an encyclopedia, we should use a photo rather than a portrait: we are attempting to convey facts when we can. More importantly, the article does not mention the center that was named after him. If this is the correct Johnson, this should be listed. If this is not the correct Johnson, it is entirely inappropriate to try to use this file name. (The article mentions the center.) PFC Johnson, along with about 50,000 others of my age mates, died in defense of our country and I think we need to do the right thing.-Arch dude (talk) 18:57, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Arch dude: It's not entirely clear at this time that the image currently in the article is properly licensed either. It's possible that this was taken in IET. It's also possible it wasn't. Merely the fact that this is present on a .gov website doesn't actually tell us anything about the copyright status of the work. GMG^talk 19:29, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@GreenMeansGo: You are correct. something funny is going on here. The current image file asserts it is from 2009, but it was in fact uploaded to commons by AlanM1 in 2018. The metadata says the JPG was digitized in 2009 and then modified by Adobe Acrobat in 2016. Furthermore upon more careful examination, I think it's a photo of a portrait, so even if the photo was taken by a government employee, the copyright remains with the portraitist. Regardless, I don't want to start a process to take it down. The VA hospital website has some fairly good live-action photos that are almost certainly PD-GOV, but the current image is really good. -Arch dude (talk) 20:20, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Arch dude: Unfortunately, we cannot keep photos just because they are good. I have started a discussion at c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:PfcRalphHJohnson.jpg. We may be able to use a fair use version here, but Commons can't keep it unless we can definitively demonstrate the status of the work. GMG^talk 20:29, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Arch dude, @RHJVAMC, et al.: I don't know about "funny". I don't have any recollection of the specifics, but I apparently wanted to replace the low-res B&W photo with something better, and I assumed that the image published on the official VA website was PDGov. I understand the argument that this may not be the case. Hopefully, the VA will email us and license one of the photos. I'll note that the new image shows him wearing the (posthumously-awarded) MoH, which seems kind of anachronistic to me, but maybe that's not unusual – it's not really a field I've done a lot of work in. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:58, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

(edit conflict)JohnKim10 it was quite clear from Fram's edit summary that this was reverted due to promotional wording/advertising. It's pretty clear this was the case, and this is why it was reverted. Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia articles.

How do I update this information?

I have edited some content on Wikipedia in the past, and can generally find my way around the page.

But I can't find a place to update information on this page. It lists the incorrect name of the superintendent (see the box on the right of the page) even though our web page: https://www.msd134.org/Domain/4 states the correct information.

Vickie Schaffeld Holbrook Hello. When you say "our web page" I assume you mean that you work for this school district. If so, you will need to review and comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies as you have some formal declarations to make. (the latter policy is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory)

It appears that you figured out how to edit the article. In the future, as you have a conflict of interest, you should instead request edits to the article as a formal edit request, so independent editors can review what you want to do. If you are referring to what appears after a Google search, it takes Google time to update its page indexing. 331dot (talk) 22:34, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

The name of the superintendent appears to have been changed and I have removed a misplaced link to a news story which broke the page layoput and referencing. As 331 says, technically you should request edits via the article talk page. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 22:42, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Trouble Logging In

I don't believe there is a way to recover a forgotten username. Do you recall any articles that you edited? You could check their edit histories to see if you recognize your username. You can only use your email to recover your password(as you need to know your username). 331dot (talk) 22:49, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

If you have to, you can create a new, successor account and state on your user page that you had used a previous account but cannot remember it. 331dot (talk) 22:50, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

If you stored your email address in the account and can still receive mails at the address then Special:PasswordReset can be used both to get the username and a temporary password.
