‘3D Touch’ on iPhone improvement suggestion

edit

[iPhone]

When 3D Touch is used on a hyperlinked word in a Wikipedia page, the preview for the page should show a representative picture and other small facts about the linked word.
The place to make requests for technical improvements is WP:VP. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:39, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Protected page

edit

How do I submit a request to turn a page into a protected one, due to high potential for racist abuse in it?

WP:Requests for page protection - however, they are not Precrime and will not pre-emptively protect a page based on someone asserting there may potentially be problems. See WP:Protection policy. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 02:51, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Can the black and white pic on this page please be placed on the left-hand side - thanks - sorry again, I cannot do this. 49.3.153.231 (talk) 04:31, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That would place an image at the top left of a section which is discouraged by WP:IMGLOC. It would also result in the text being 'sandwiched' between two images, so other re-alignment would also be necessary. One or other, of the images could be left-aligned further down the section if desired. AS you've been asked, possibly 100s of times, before, please do not start multiple sections with the same heading. Eagleash (talk) 04:46, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(sorry about forgetting the "multiple section rule") I have done it with another black and white pic/file - so all good Thanks 49.3.153.231 (talk) 05:31, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need an admin for simple task

edit

The Ubud Writers and Readers Festival needs a redirect from (or possibly even a move to?) Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (its current styling), but that page has been blocked from creation owing to persistent vandalism in the past, apparently. The admin who did it does not appear to have edited anything since 2016, so I'm posting this here in the hope that a passing admin may be able to undo this block so that I can create the redirect page. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 06:15, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at the target page, and it seems that it was protected in January 2015, over six years ago. The admin who protected it hasn't been active on Wikipedia since December 2016, for over four years. So it looks like the issue is long outdated. Therefore I have unprotected the target page and moved the article. JIP | Talk 08:26, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much for attending to that, JIP. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 11:03, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Heimoore77, afaict, you never submitted the draft for review. You can use the WP:SUBMIT link to to so. The lack of inline citations (see WP:TUTORIAL) is a problem, and you should take a look at WP:LEAD. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:50, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I.DGamingyoutube. If you want to make test edits you can use your sandbox, and if you want to create a good article, I recommend you read some guides, such as "Your first article", which goes over our manual of style and the importance of reliable sources. Landform infobox

edit

Hi Folks!! Anybody know an ideal infobox for a pensisula that can take a Gaelic name. There is a couple of dozen of these peninsula's in Scoland and its not available. Some of the other land features, seem to take no problem, e.g. on Oban. Its has Scots which I didn't know and Gealic. I'm using it on the Rhu Peninsula article. It is in there, but is not showing. Thanks scope_creepTalk 11:53, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've been thinking for a long time that infoboxen need to standardize on how they handle non-English names ... For {{infobox landform}} at Rhu Peninsula:
|other_name={{lang-gd|Rudha Arasaig}}

Hello Saileshpai, and welcome to Wikipedia. Important distinction: You don't have a bandpage on WP, WP has an article about When Chai Met Toast, see WP:OWN. If you're a member, see WP:COI and WP:EDITREQUEST, you are welcome to make suggestions and give sources that support them at Talk:When Chai Met Toast. WP:ISAWIT is not good enough. Your edit [1] was reverted because that's the wrong place for an external link. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:13, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Is there anyway to sort tables by different columns on mobile?

edit

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to look at the list of countries by incarceration rate, and the table comes up in alphabetical order. This makes it almost impossible to discern any useful information from the table. Is there a way to sort it by the other columns on mobile, because I can’t seem to figure it out. 2001:8F8:1B2F:C6AA:8979:5E47:A32B:79F9 (talk) 15:22, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just went to that site on my mobile. I do see that the sort options aren't available on mobile but if you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see the word "desktop" which will convert to the desktop view. You can then sort by any column.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:47, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a new user and need to upload an image - how to become a confirmed user?

edit

I just need to upload a new logo for my organization. It seems I need to make 10 edits in order to become a confirmed user and able to upload an image? I don't have any edits to make, however. Do I need to look around for things to change on other pages? Not bringing a lot of content expertise here, just trying to upload an image. Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by SU Webmaster (talkcontribs) 15:30, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@SU Webmaster: Since you apparently have a conflict of interest, I suggest you follow the recommendation on your talk page to "propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template)", including suggesting that someone else uploads an image from a web page to Wikipedia. GoingBatty (talk) 15:46, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@SU Webmaster: Greetings, and welcome. Accounts become autoconfirmed after four days and ten edits, at which point uploading images becomes possible. That said, there are other issues at play here which you should take note of.
  • Firstly, your username does not appear to be in compliance with with our username policy, as it appears to be an account representing a role rather than you as an individual. Note that something like "Bob at SU" would be fine. You can request a username change here, or, since your edit here is your only edit to date, it would be just as well to cease using that account and start a new one.
  • Secondly, and most importantly, regardless of your username, if you are editing Wikipedia as part of your job duties, you must disclose your affiliation as a paid editor as per the Terms of Use to which you agreed when you created your account. See also our guidelines on conflict of interest and note that edits which appear to be promotional will not be looked upon favorably.
If you look around enough, you shouldn't have a great deal of trouble finding articles in need of minor improvements. But please read the links to policies and procedures which I have provided above before proceeding further. Thank you for your time, and feel free to ask more questions if you have them. --Finngall talk 16:11, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Putting an image in a table in a certain way

edit

Hello, I have been working a lot on this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_districts_of_the_House_of_Representatives_of_Japan

I am trying to turn the list format into table format, as in the japanese version of the article: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%A1%86%E8%AD%B0%E9%99%A2%E5%B0%8F%E9%81%B8%E6%8C%99%E5%8C%BA%E5%88%B6%E9%81%B8%E6%8C%99%E5%8C%BA%E4%B8%80%E8%A6%A7#%E7%BE%A4%E9%A6%AC%E7%9C%8C

As you can see the japanese version of the article has a map of the prefecture's districts INSIDE of the table for that prefecture. I want to know how to do this (I can't look at the source for the japanese article because it's all in japanese). Thanks. Bwmdjeff (talk) 16:15, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Bwmdjeff: I moved one image into the table in this edit so you can see how it's done. I used rowspan per Help:Table. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:32, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

two edits at the same time - different topics

edit

Hello, I just submitted some edits for a page and am awaiting approval. Now, I want to create a new post (totally different topic) and need a blank page to start over to do that. How do I get another blank "Sandbox" or is there another way I should do this? Marcia M.

Do you mean you submitted your sandbox article for WP:AfC? You should really copy it to Draft:Your article's title and submit that instead. Then you could reuse your sandbox. Clarityfiend (talk) 20:34, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcia K. Morgan: While you could move your User:Marcia K. Morgan/sandbox to Draft:Anatomical doll, it is unlikely to be approved because there's already an article for Anatomically correct doll. Since you also seem to have a conflict of interest, you could declare your COI on your user page using {{UserboxCOI}} and suggest improvements to the existing article by posting them to Talk:Anatomically correct doll with the {{request edit}} template. You could also create more sandboxes (or other user subpages) such as User:Marcia K. Morgan/sandbox2 or User:Marcia K. Morgan/any text. Happy editing! In case you're still on this IP @5.170.68.242: as Arch dude says, we can't help you it-wiki. However, if they blocked you on one account, that applies to you as a person, so they are always going to block you on any other account you make, and that would itself make it far harder for you to get an unblock or make an appeal for the original action (that is, even if that block was bad, it wouldn't authorise you to keep making accounts to evade it). Delete Anwar Agewan Wikipedia

edit

I am unable to delete anwar agewan wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anwar_Agewan

I would be thankful i can get help on how to delete it as few of the information is incorrect or lie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garimap (talkcontribs)

Well, you could open an WP:AFD, but I doubt the article will be deleted in its current state, and the fact that you're a new editor starting an AfD may concern other editors. If you believe information within the article is incorrect and it's unsourced, you can tag it for needing a source, or outright delete it, though the latter may be considered bad practice. If the information is sourced and you nevertheless believe it to be incorrect, your best bet is likely to raise your concerns at the article's Talk page to see whether you can get a consensus that the information should be deleted. Cheers. DonIago (talk) 20:15, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Garimap (ec) Only administrators may delete articles. If you have reasons based in Wikipedia guidelines to propose its deletion, please follow the instructions at Articles for Deletion, though I don't think you will succeed. Note that if you believe the article to have incorrect information, you should discuss it on the article talk page. Please note that Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources say, and makes no claims as to truthfulness. You will need to show that the sources are not accurately summarized. If the sources are incorrect, but summarized accurately here, you will need to take that up with them. 331dot (talk) 20:20, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article can't be deleted on the ground of 'notability'. I don't think that the information is incorrect, since it comes from a very authentic Encyclopedia/Who's Who Dictionary, which have been prepared by very genuine scholars of Gujarati literature and published by very reputed literary institutions. If User:Garimap has any issue with the information, they should directly contact these institutions which have published the cited references. --Gazal world (talk) 10:39, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Categories such as "Category:Chinese mathematicians"

edit

As a word, "Chinese" can be used to indicate residence (location), citizenship (law), genetic ancestry (biology), or ethnic group affiliation (behavior). For categories like "Category:Chinese mathematicians", which of these do we mean? Blurring the distinction between these categories could easily be classified as (inadvertent) racism: e.g., that U.S. citizens of Japanese genetic ancestry were rounded up in World War 2 is widely viewed as racism.

Obviously this applies to other countries as well. How do I start a discussion to address this issue? —Q uantling (talk | contribs) 21:13, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Quantling: It's for nationality. That's why Category:Chinese mathematicians is in Category:Mathematicians by nationality. Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality#General says: "Do not create categories that are a cross-section of a topic with an ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation, unless these characteristics are relevant to the topic." Ethnicity is not considered relevant for mathematicians so there is no category for mathematicians in Category:People of Chinese descent by occupation. I'm a bit surprised we have Category:American academics of Chinese descent. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:59, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you for the quick response. Just to be sure that I get it -- by "nationality" you mean "citizenship" so a "Chinese mathematician" is a citizen of China? (Well, I suppose if a person's citizenship changes over their lifetime then it could be more confusing, but let's stick to the simple case of someone whose citizenship remains constant.) —Quantling (talk | contribs) 00:30, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Quantling: Bascially yes, but citizenship has a specific legal meaning and is often just an assumption. You don't have to know the legal status of somebody to classify them as a Chinese mathematician. If they work in China, have a Chinese sounding name, and you have no reason to think they are not Chinese citizens, then just place them in Category:Chinese mathematicians. But don't claim on the category page that it is for mathematicians with Chinese citizenship. That may deter editors from adding people who belong there. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:46, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you. I wasn't trying to measure how much certainty we need; I was just trying to figure out what we are measuring. If (it is likely enough that) the person is a Chinese citizen and (likely enough that the person) is a mathematician then that's what we mean by "Chinese mathematician". So long as that is understood, and it is not also a blur with genetic ancestry, ethnic group affiliation, or location of residence then I am good. —Quantling (talk | contribs) 00:57, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
