Our Teahouse Archive Structure

May I draw your attention to this post about the format of our Teahouse archives which I've placed on our other Talk page? I'm not sure why we have two different discussion page locations for this project. Anyway, because I've no idea whether Hosts watch both pages, to avoid confusion please leave any comments there, please. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 22:04, 11 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey Nick Moyes, I never even knew this page existed. I'd be strongly tempted to redirect all of the existing talk pages that are subpages of WT:Teahouse back to WT:Teahouse. Makes a mess for archives, perhaps. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 07:51, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

Our mission statement.

I copied this from the WikiMedia foundation page concerning the Teahouse project. I bumbled in there following links from our Teahouse page. Please, let's all remember for a moment why we are here.

"The Wikipedia Teahouse is a many-to-many support space designed specifically for new editors.
The Teahouse project was launched in February 2012 by Wikimedia Foundation Fellows and WMF staff in partnership with volunteers from the English Wikipedia community. Teahouse began as a pilot project on English Wikipedia, with a goal of learning whether a social approach to new editor support could retain more new editors there."- WMF

I suggest that we as "hosts" endevour to embrace this mandate. Wikipedia can't always be Stick Stick Stick. Offer some carrots and apples to a potential workhorse. Manage our resources more effectively. Above all, let us endevour to be unfailingly polite. I thank you for your consideration. Regards, Hamster Sandwich (talk) 18:49, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

I agree. We should all strive to be polite and helpful to all our guests. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 18:52, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Automated welcomes

Hi guys, I'm not sure how HostBot works, but I came across the message at User talk:ELASTX, which gives them a link to User:Abelmoschus Esculentus - AE currently has a 'retired' banner on their page. I'm assuming this is automated, with a random volunteer's userpage in the invitations - might be a good idea to remove AE from the list of users unless they unretire? Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 16:57, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

There was some previous discussion about this issue, now archived at Wikipedia talk:Teahouse/Host lounge/Archive 13#Inactive hosts and bot signatures. I think Jtmorgan maintains the list of editors whose names get included on invites. Cordless Larry (talk) 21:36, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
Girth Summit and Cordless Larry the bot checks whether someone's contributed within the past three weeks before including their name on an invite. So I'm inclined to let this work itself out, which it will in about 2 weeks if AE stops editing. But if you feel strongly I can manually remove their name from the invite candidates list sooner. What would you prefer? Thanks for the ping, J-Mo 02:49, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
That sounds fair enough to me - it won't take long for it to sort itself out automatically if AE stays away. Thanks for explaining. Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 06:55, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi all, I have been advised by BU Rob13 via email that paid editing should be reported by the user who posts the report rather than hosts for them. The email to use is paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org, I would say it's also best to contact them ourselves as well if the user doesn't acknowledge our response as the CU team have said it's very valuable to be aware of this. Modest proposal

  1. Whatever has a Teahouse link in it causing lots of "edit request" artefacts here, kill it.
  2. The "featured hosts" list contains dupes, keep only the freshest profile per active host.
  3. Silently drop the guest profiles, guests might put a lot of work into their profiles. If it's an exercise in "how to upload a selfie on commons" it's fine, and a nice user page makes sense, but otherwise…

84.46.52.48 (talk) 23:03, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Re "guest profiles", hosts seem to be very fond of telling guests that we don't have "profiles" on Wikipedia, but there they are: accessible from a big button at the top of the main project page. I think this is confusing some guests.--Shantavira|feed me 11:58, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

First, anyone who wants to ask a question or attempt answering a question at Teahouse is able to. As you are new to Wikipedia (today!) you are advised to refrain from answering questions until you have a better understanding of rules. Separately, some articles are protected, and require Extended confirmed status to edit = 30 days and >500 edits. You have not reached either milestone. David notMD (talk) 01:42, 31 May 2019 (UTC)

GOLD GOLDENFRITZ TRIPLE THREE (talk) 07:01, 8 June 2019 (UTC) Just basic information

Hi, GOLD GOLDENFRITZ TRIPLE THREE. This is the wrong place to put this. This page is for the Teahouse hosts to discuss the operation of the Teahouse. If you have a question, it goes at WP:TEAHOUSE. I would suggest you formulate a more specific question, though. Basically, learning Wikipedia is kinda a self taught thing. We are there to help you through places where you are confused, but you have to take the first steps yourself. Perhaps you may want to try The Wikipedia Adventure, an interactive learning experience in the form of a video game. I'll leave some information in the form of a welcome message on your talk page (if no one has beat me to it), but you've gotta get as far on your own that you can ask specific questions. Be bold, Wikipedia is almost impossible to break. You're new. If you make mistakes, no one will hold them against you. Welcome aboard. Try some things. Perhaps after you do, more specific questions will come to mind. John from Idegon (talk) 08:42, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

"Sign here"

I'm wondering if it might be a good idea to tweak "Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host start" to change "Sign here" to "Enter your username here" in the "Make me a host" section. I (and apparently a few others) took "Sign here" to mean WP:TILDE. Maybe this is not a big deal, but my "signature" was then added to the section heading of my profile on the "Host landing" page. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:53, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: This page is no longer in use. All discussions on management of the Teahouse should be posted at Wikipedia talk:Teahouse. (That said, I've implemented your suggestion. Thanks.) Nick Moyes (talk) 09:49, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Being marked as a Host here doesn't actually mean anything, anyone can answer questions at the Teahouse (given that they know enough to assist). The Teahouse gives advice about how to edit Wikipedia, and you need to have been a consistent editor here for at least a few months to know how to answer questions about editing Wikipedia. I would recommend just expanding some already-existing articles, then in a few months when you have a few hundred edits you should definitely come and reply to some questions at the Teahouse. – Thjarkur (talk) 11:09, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
