2015 Pan American Games

The 2015 Pan American Games are here. Hope Sportsfan 1234 and TheGreenGiant23 allow us to get involved... Osplace 13:53, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

You don't need to have my permission for any kind, I never stop someone to contribute to the 2015 Pan An Games, in fact I let a ton of messages on the talk page of users who contribute in the past for p.a. pages soliciting their help and no one respond me. If you want to see wrong behaviour (or lack of communication), you should check more with Sportsfan 1234, who does only what he want and never ask for cooperation or help or any kind. Really, this kind of remark by Osplace is insulting, to say the least. TheGreenGiant23 (talk) 22:56, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Pan Am Games 1951 Buenos Aires

I'd like to help but I'm not user and my English not is good enough. However I can say about 1951 games, that although the article puts under dispute the number of medals, PASO has its official medal count with no discrepancy. Anyway some sports don't have his details, when the info is disponible in the web. In this way, with all the details us can see the total of medals, for example:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wrestling_at_the_1951_Pan_American_Games , This are the medals of Wrestling: https://unitedworldwrestling.org/database

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowing_at_the_1951_Pan_American_Games , This are the medals of Rowing: http://www.usrowing.org/docs/default-source/historical-results/PanAmMedalCount.pdf?sfvrsn=0

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_at_the_1951_Pan_American_Games , This are the medals of Tennis: http://www.usta.com/About-USTA/Organization/Yearbook/22998_2008_USTA_Yearbook__Pan_American_Games/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_at_the_1951_Pan_American_Games , This are the medals of shooting: http://www.issf-sports.org/competitions/results.ashx

All are official references (no one of Argentina, 2 Internacional federations -Shooting/Wrestling-, and 2 USA sport association).

Only left Sailing, still searching. If you can help development that articles, can be great.

Competitors list

Greetings. Recently, someone (probably Sportsfan 1234) has created a new table: delegation per sport and gender competitors list. This is located in must nation at games at the 2015 Pan Am Games. Is this ok? Sinces is not included in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics/Manual of Style, probably not... Just asking to the Fathers and Creators. --Osplace 04:39, 23 July 2015 (UTC)

Pictograms

Is the use of pictograms ok? Using pictograms in every nations at games article will really overlink those pictograms, like this use from Chantella28. Osplace 18:09, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

  • The purpose is to provide a visual cue for the respective sports disciplines and, for mine, I don't think they'll be overlinked. I suspect it would be a fraction of the overall linkage of flagicons, for example. -- Ham105 (talk) 21:16, 24 July 2015 (UTC)
No, pictograms should not be used in my opinion. The same with linking in headers. Kante4 (talk) 14:13, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
Agree on no pictograms. Osplace 12:37, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
And I would disagree. I find them extremely helpful for people who have English as a second language. And if you look at the number of times each pictogram has been used, it is indeed a fraction, as Ham105 said Chantella28 (talk) 15:15, 29 July 2015 (UTC)
I agree with Chantella28, but this goes against MOS so I will have to say no. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 15:48, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

  • True, although the MOS heading question might be resolved by moving the icon down one line e.g.:
Athletics

-- Ham105 (talk) 15:59, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

I was invited into this discussion. I would prefer to limit the use of pictograms in places where space is at a premium, like table headers for example. I'd disagree on using them in section headers, as text should be enough. –HTD 20:34, 2 August 2015 (UTC)

2015 pan am games doping control

I am very confused and am hoping for some assistance. There are two Peruvian athletes that have been publicly implicated (Mauricio Fiol, and the marathon winner), who would lose medals if confirmed. There are spanish news stories that implicate that Fiol's medal has been stripped but the games website shows no change, and the CBC ran a story yesterday still using "if" statements to describe the possibility of more Canadian medals. I tried reverting the swimming results back until there is some kind of official word, but gave up. If the CBC is not crediting Canadians with additional medals, is it appropriate for us to?18abruce (talk) 18:32, 10 September 2015 (UTC)

Found this, bizarre that canadian media, or even official results do not take it into account.18abruce (talk) 14:46, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

Are there Commonwealth Youth Games notable enough...

Are the Commonwealth Youth Games notable enough to have individual pages for nations like Cook Islands at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games as I plan to work on some of these? The 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games have no individual pages for nations - is there a reason why? Thanks. Leeds United FC fan (talk) 17:00, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

I don't think they are necessary, but are notable. I believe there are no individual nation pages for 2015, because there were a lack of editors/interest in getting them started. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 00:49, 24 April 2016 (UTC) @Leeds United FC fan

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:16, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject Multi-sport events/Archive 3 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Multi-sport events/Archive 3/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Multi-sport events.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Multi-sport events, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. "Lusophony" Games

I was polishing up some pages from the Jeux de la Francophonie, and followed a link to the Portuguese equivalent, the Jogos da Lusofonia. These are translated into English in Wikipedia - and only in Wikipedia - as the "Lusophony Games," on many, many linked pages. The problem is, there is no word "Lusophony" in the English language. The correct translation (and word in the article titles) should be "Lusophone" (in both the adjective and noun forms, just like "Francophone" and "Anglophone"). If you Google the term "Lusophony," you'll see the only place the term is used is in these Wikipedia pages, and the term does not exist in the dictionary. I'd like to propose correcting, and changing, all these pages and use of the term to the correct English. Whoever created all these pages didn't know the correct word in English. It's kind of embarrassing that all these Wikipedia articles have a non-existent word in their titles. What to do? Bruxism (talk) 05:35, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

It seems unlikely given how the 2017 Games appear to have been cancelled with no official comment whatsoever, but is there any official English-language communication from the ACOLOP that uses "Lusophone" (or "Lusophony" for that matter)? SellymeTalk 11:57, 18 February 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of Algeria at the 1967 Mediterranean Games for deletion

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   10:59, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Categories

I created Category:European Championships medalists because exists Category:European Games medalists that is a similar multi-sports events. And then all the international media report the medal table of the championships, as it is here. @Kante4: does not agree and for this to deleted the inclusion in the category, which I had put, the articles of some swimmers. What do you think? --Kasper2006 (talk) 08:07, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

In case for the swimming events, there is already the Category:European Aquatics Championships medalists in swimming. So i think it is not needed, as this is not a new event, just some EC put together at the same time. Kante4 (talk) 08:09, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Also for the other six European Championships of the event exists (or could be created), the relative category. But one does not exclude the other. --Kasper2006 (talk) 08:11, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
@Kante4: you must be lost something if you say that "this is not a new event" :) Look the official site of the event: 2018 European Championships --Kasper2006 (talk) 08:17, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Sorry, was not clear enough. It is a new event, but the EC's are not. Just put together. Kante4 (talk) 08:18, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
This is the first edition of the event that will be disputed every four years. It was conceived as a mini Olimpycs and is having more media success than the European Games. I'm sure the time will convince you too, but you could convince yourself right away. ;) --Kasper2006 (talk) 08:22, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Does not change my view about the categories, which this is about. I know that this will be held more often (pending on success and response from sportlers). I go with the consensus of course, if there is one here. Kante4 (talk) 08:24, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
I'm not sure that the medalists need to have 1 parent category. At the European Games, all the event are held in 1 place (like Olympics), while EC is held in UK and Germany - I don't feel the connection to be that strong either. I don't mind if they exist though. --Pelmeen10 (talk) 14:08, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

2019 European Games controversy

I was adding this:

Human Rights Watch that questioned the EOC over the treatment of journalists by the Belarusian government. In response to the concerns over the country's human rights situation, the EOC has yet to name a journalist rights monitor (https://www.rferl.org/a/rights-groups-call-for-hotline-during-2019-european-games-in-belarus/29918772.html and https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1079347/eoc-will-name-press-freedom-monitor-for-minsk-2019-but-stresses-it-believes-organisers-will-keep-their-word)

I wanted to add this because Belarus's human rights record will affect the 2019 games but Tomcat removed it without acutally explaining why. These articles and the edit has good explaination about the controversies surrounding these games. RainbowSilver2ndBackup (talk) 02:21, 16 June 2019 (UTC)

Question RE: Use of official results documents from multi-sport games

At the end of sporting events there will often be official results documents, which are accessible on the website as PDFs. But these documents can go missing if the games website is not maintained, as is often the case with sporting events. My question: is it OK within Wikipedia to put the PDFs with official results from an event on Wikipedia - I suppose in the Wikicommons or whatever - so that they can be a stable reference for the sporting events in question (thereby avoiding dead reference links). This could be especially helpful for smaller sports that might not have a great deal of media attention outside of the games website, so might not have much in the way of references to non-games specific websites. We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? FYI – I have created an {{EventLink}} template which simplifies the creation of event-level links in medal table on games pages (e.g. Archery at the 1990 Asian Games). This should simplify input and remove the need for the more verbose {{DetailsLink}} template in many cases (example). Let me know if any issues are found and I will review the code. Renaming Template:Olympic Channel to Template:Olympics.com

On 29th of April 2021 www.olympicchannel.com has been merged with www.olympic.org into a new IOC website Olympics.com. Though all the current links work with the redirection, template should be renamed and updated with the new links. Thanks! VLaiquendi (talk) 16:49, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Tennis MSE navboxes listed for deletion

A discussion is ongoing at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021 October 31#Tennis at multi-sport competitions about numerous tennis MSE navbox templates which have been replaced by Template:Infobox tennis tournament event and Template:Infobox tennis tournament year. Any comments therein by WP:MSE members would be appreciated. Sod25 (talk) 14:32, 31 October 2021 (UTC)

Are "Men's Singles" and "Women's Doubles", etc., proper names?

At WT:WikiProject Tennis#Are "Men's Singles" and "Women's Doubles", etc., proper names? we're discussing whether these subevents should be capped. Join if interested. (this is User:Dicklyon, not logged in, on another's computer). 2601:645:8700:2F90:F07C:BC6B:32AA:486F (talk) 23:29, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

The decision was that these are not proper names. The 5425 tennis articles that had them in title case have been moved to sentence case, after RM discussion and bot approval. Still working on cleanup edits. Maybe there's room for more such edits in multi-sport event articles, too? Dicklyon (talk) 19:47, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Moving East Timor at... articles

Following a discussion with the Olympics WikiProject there's a rough consensus to move "East Timor at the ... Olympics" articles to be "Timor Leste at the... Olympics" largely due to it being what everyone calls them and how the IOC tracks them in their databases. Before I move all of the "East Timor at the ..." articles (e.g. Aquatics and Asian Games) I figured I'd post here to see if there's any opposition; I note that in all of the databases I've looked at for these games, they are officially entered as Timor Leste so we would be matching official records. Thanks in advance for the thoughts. (please do not ping on reply) Primefac (talk) 19:54, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Infobox templates

A discussion relevant to this WikiProject, titled Article infobox, was started at Talk:Judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The main issue in discussion: Should the same infobox template be used across all event articles, in out case {{Infobox Commonwealth Games event}}, or could a substitute, sport-specific template be used in its stead — so long as it provides all relevant multi-sport event functionalities as the former? In our case, the sport specific template in discussion is {{Infobox judo competition event}}.

Edit: the following is my side of the argument. The other could be found in the discussion linked to in the first sentace.
As you can see, when an NOC is given as a parameter to Infobox judo competition even, the infobox links to that NOC's "year at the games" article and not to the country article. The point I've tried to make is that given that every functionality of Infobox Commonwealth Games event is kept, there is no reason not to use the sport specific template with its additional functionalities, at the cost of "uniformity" of infoboxes across all event articles.

I'd love to ger more input. CLalgo (talk) 13:19, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

I'm going to spectate this one, but CLalgo, please note that when one is bringing a particular discussion to the attention of a WikiProject/other editors, the request/notification should be neutrally worded, and not give your entire position and why you think the other person is wrong. I would highly advise you reword your request for more input to follow these norms and avoid campaigning. Primefac (talk) 13:26, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
@Primefac: Thank you for your comment. My aim was to start a broader scope discussion in this forum, while making readers aware of a relevant discussion that has already started. As I am an interested party, my original message may be biased, but that is the argument I'm bringing before this project for its input. Counter arguments could be found in the discussion I've linked to in the very first sentence of the original message, of course. CLalgo (talk) 13:40, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
Ah, I seem to have misunderstood your intentions; if you are wanting to start a general discussion about infoboxes, then yes, carry on. I thought you were canvassing extra opinions for that specific page discussion. Primefac (talk) 13:51, 1 August 2022 (UTC)
No, the will to avoid more discussions like that one is what propelled me to start this. When I've created Infobox judo competition event I've allowed it to support 9 different kinds of multi-sport events, some even without specialized templates of their own, but never thought someone would object to its usage. As someone clearly objected, I brought the template for a broader discussion here for a policy to be discussed. The discussion of uniformity vs functionality if a valid one, and I think that this is the place to have it in a broad scope. CLalgo (talk) 14:00, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Troubling AfD

I find the AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Football at the 2001 Maccabiah Games to be quite troubling. 2603:7000:2143:8500:401A:1701:C4F5:B270 (talk) 06:52, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. At Summer Universiade or at Summer World University Games?

We need to change all the trees articles?   --Kasper2006 (talk) 11:13, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean by "trees" but anything where the games were Universiade (example) should stay that way. "X at the Universiade" should be updated accordingly, though I'm not seeing any summary pages like that. Primefac (talk) 14:49, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Summary pages were moved. There are bunch of categories (category tree of Category:FISU World University Games) yet to be moved. Examples Category:Nations at the Universiade, Category:Universiade records, subcats of Category:FISU World University Games medalists by country etc. Pelmeen10 (talk) 15:50, 5 August 2023 (UTC)

Another RfC on capitalization of all our articles

I thought this was a done deal back in this 2022 RFC but obviously not. A handful of editors did another rfc with no sports projects input at all. And it's being challenged because we just noticed it. This could affect almost every single tennis and Olympic article we have, and goodness know how many other sports. Some may have already been moved it you weren't watching the article. And not just the article titles will be affected but all the player bios that link to the articles. Sure the links would be piped to the right place if thousands of articles moved, but if the wording in a bio still said 2023 Wimbledon Championships – Men's singles or Swimming at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 metre backstroke that would likely need to be changed by hand. There is also talk of removing the ndash completely.

Perhaps this is what sports projects want and perhaps not. Either way I certainly don't want projects ill-informed as the last RfC was handled. Express your thoughts at the following rfc. Fyunck(click) (talk) 20:55, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
