Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

Extended content

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

  Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • The Community Tech team has been working on a system for temporarily watching pages, and welcomes feedback.

Hello, Another Believer. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Unfollow the Rules".

Archiving talk pages

Hi, just a heads up that your use of OneClickArchiver has resulted in some single post talk archives for WikiProject Biography: see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Archive 66, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Archive 67, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Archive 68, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography/Archive 70. Discussions on that page are automatically archived by lowercase sigmabot III so there hould be little need to archive any manually. PC78 (talk) 08:18, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019

Extended content

Read this in another languageSubscription list for this multilingual newsletter

Inside this newsletter, the Editing team talks about their work on the mobile visual editor, on the new talk pages project, and at Wikimania 2019.

Help

What talk page interactions do you remember? Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the talk page for this project. The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

Talk Pages

The Talk Pages Consultation was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The Phase 2 Report of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: Talk Page Project project page.

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the "Getting involved" section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

Mobile visual editor

The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the visual editor on mobile. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at Talk:VisualEditor on mobile.

What happens when you click on a link. The new Edit Card is bigger and has more options for editing links.

The editing toolbar is changing in the mobile visual editor. The old system had two different toolbars. Now, all the buttons are together. Tell the team what you think about the new toolbar.
  • In September, the Editing team updated the mobile visual editor's editing toolbar. Anyone could see these changes in the mobile visual editor.
    • One toolbar: All of the editing tools are located in one toolbar. Previously, the toolbar changed when you clicked on different things.
    • New navigation: The buttons for moving forward and backward in the edit flow have changed.
    • Seamless switching: an improved workflow for switching between the visual and wikitext modes.
  • Feedback: You can try the refreshed toolbar by opening the mobile VisualEditor on a smartphone. Please post your feedback on the Toolbar feedback talk page.

Wikimania

The Editing Team attended Wikimania 2019 in Sweden. They led a session on the mobile visual editor and a session on the new talk pages project. They tested two new features in the mobile visual editor with contributors. You can read more about what the team did and learned in the team's report on Wikimania 2019.

Looking ahead

  • Talk Pages Project: The team is thinking about the first set of proposed changes. The team will be working with a few communities to pilot those changes. The best way to stay informed is by adding your username to the list on the project page: Getting involved.
  • Testing the mobile visual editor as the default: The Editing team plans to post results before the end of the calendar year. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: VisualEditor as mobile default project page.
  • Measuring the impact of Edit Cards: The Editing team hopes to share results in November. This study asks whether the project helped editors add links and citations. The best way to stay informed is by adding the project page to your watchlist: Edit Cards project page.

2019 US Banknote Contest

Extended content
  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Miss'd America

Extended content

Miss'd America was just listed as a good article, but Legobot appears to have processed this incorrectly, removing the entry from WP:GAN as "maintenance" rather than "passed". Have you seen this sort of thing happen before? Is it possible the bot will catch its own error, or is it acceptable in this case to add the GA icon to the article manually? Armadillopteryxtalk 02:44, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Armadillopteryx, To be honest, I'm not sure, but I'd go ahead and try adding the icon manually and just keeping an eye on things. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:58, 24 October 2019 (UTC)

Newbie to Wikipedia: Help on an article!

Hello Another Believer,

I am a student in the Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities class organized by the user DStrassmann as part of a course at Rice University. My professor suggested that I contact you for your expertise in editing articles over your many years at Wikipedia. Currently, I am working on homophobia in ethnic minority communities. I am worried about my contributions being taken down for sounding too much like a term paper, and would appreciate help in making my language sound as encyclopedic as possible. Let me know when you've got time to look over the information in my sandbox!

Thank you,Wuchrist (talk) 04:59, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Wuchrist, Thanks for the heads up! I see you've started moving content over to the live page. I'll take a look, but you're going about this the right way in terms of adding text in pieces for easier editor review, and posting notes to Talk:Homophobia in ethnic minority communities to encourage editor engagement and discussion of specific topics and ways to improve the entry. That'll be the best place to suggest improvements and talk to other community members, and if you're seeking feedback from others, you might consider posting notes on the talk pages of Wikipedia:WikiProject Discrimination and/or Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies. Thanks for working to make Wikipedia better! ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:53, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

Disruptive editing at Aja (drag queen)

Not sure why it's been so bad for the past 24 hours, but I'm already at three reverts and so am hesitant to continue—I feel like the edits constitute a BLP issue/vandalism (all are certainly unsourced and IMO non-constructive), but perhaps someone else would disagree. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved much this year. Hey, A.B. I love the additional material that you archived on the Talk page of The Great God Pan (sculpture), and I'm incorporating some of it into the article. I've found some original sources that contradict the author's claim that only the plaster version was exhibited, and I added notes quoting them. Lorado Taft wrote a gentle but precise criticism of the sculpture's modeling. And I haven't found confirmation yet that it was exhibited at St. Louis in 1904. More to do. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 19:49, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

BoringHistoryGuy, Great! I'm traveling currently, but will definitely take a look very soon. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:01, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
The catalogue of the art gallery at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair lists only one work by Barnard -- The Hewer.[1] That doesn't mean that The Great God Pan couldn't have been exhibited in, say, the New York State Building or elsewhere. But I'm inclined to guess that Pan wasn't there. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 16:33, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
I think it was better before. "Inscriptions" had its own heading, it wasn't under "History," == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:27, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
BoringHistoryGuy, I disagree, because there should be more than just mention of the inscriptions, but you've been putting in the most work here so I'll let you change. I've written quite a few Good articles about works of art and "Description", "History", and "Reception" sections are all very common. ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:33, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
I wasn't disputing adding a Description section. I was pointing out that Inscriptions was not under the History heading. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:44, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
BoringHistoryGuy, Ah, I see, sorry for the misunderstanding. Usually the order of sections is Description, History, then Reception, but like I said I'll just let you do your thing. Won't be an issue unless you're going for GA status and want the article to be similar to those. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:08, 10 November 2019 (UTC)
The Description section could also come first. Describe it to your heart's content. But I think Inscriptions works better as its own subheading. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 04:18, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

I still haven't been able to find confirmation that The Great God Pan was exhibited at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. Barnard was a judge of sculpture, so he wasn't in competition for awards. The Hewer is listed in the catalogue of the Art Gallery, but nothing else by him. Pennsylvania claimed him as a favorite son, and The Hewer was illustrated in volume 2 of Pennsylvania at the World's Fair, but no mention of Pan. His parents were living in Illinois by then, but no mention of him in the Illinois at the fair book; and he was living in NYC by then, but no mention in the New York at the fair book.
I did find a photo of Pan at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, which I added to the article == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 20:08, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Odd Man Out Tour

  Resolved
Extended content

The article Odd Man Out Tour has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No assertion of notability; cursory search does not reveal sources that suggest why this particular tour is notable standalone from musicians' careers.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:10, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Harvard gates

Extended content

Thanks very much for your work on Boston-area buildings and monuments and so on -- particularly your quite good images. I have a request, and a proposal.

The request is that seen at Talk:Statue_of_John_Harvard#Photo_ideas, though I think better than a closeup would be a retake of File:JohnHarvardShinyFoot24June07.jpg more carefully done so that the inscription shows clearly, if that's possible. But be sure to include the window (or the window over J.H.'s other shoulder, if the lighting is more favorable or whatever) to serve the caption.

The proposal is that we collaborate on List of gates of Harvard Yard, which I stubbed at [2]. If you'll take the photos I can do the text. And if you're a glutton for punishment, List_of_Harvard_College_freshman_dormitories and Category:Harvard_Houses need a lot of improvement, image-wise. EEng 05:32, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

EEng, Thanks! I was in Boston/Cambridge recently for a conference. I'm still in the process of uploading my photographs from the trip, including some of the Harvard gates, but I can't really respond to image requests since I don't live locally. I am very interested in the Harvard gates list, and even creating new stubs for specific gates. I will be traveling again soon, but I will keep this on my radar and continue uploading and organizing my pictures at commons:User:Another_Believer/Boston and commons:User:Another Believer/Cambridge, Massachusetts. I have hundreds more to share. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:47, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Great work! I don't have a good camera and anyway I'm not a very good photographer. If you'll be returning to Cambridge at some point contact me and perhaps I'll have some suggestions. Offhand I didn't see any MIT pics so there's fertile ground there, and in particular we could use a better version of File:MIT_RageWarehouseIreProof.jpg (about which I plan to write a short article).
At the link above the gates are listed in circumferential order (I think) so if the spirit moves you, you could make a complete round. Thanks again for all your hard work! EEng 17:32, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
EEng, Yup, I've already left Boston/Cambridge and I don't have plans to revisit, so I can't really honor requests but I'll continue to upload my photographs at the aforementioned links. I've also watchlisted your sandbox with the gates list, which I'm looking forward to seeing expanded. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:33, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for adding all those images! EEng 17:40, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
EEng, Sure thing! I'll add more as I continue uploading and labeling my photographs. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:41, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
If you want, you could move/copy content over to Draft:Harvard Yard gates or Draft:List of Harvard Yard gates so other editors might help out. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:43, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
I want to hold it close for now because I've got a lot on my plate for the foreseeable future, and I intend it to be a DYK, which has that stupid 7-day rule. If someone moves the draft to live the 7-day clock starts. Once I've got time I'll get the hardcopy sources and get going. EEng 20:12, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
EEng, Just FYI, someone is unlikely to move the draft into main space without asking, especially if there's a note or template at the top of the page explaining the 'work in progress'. I hope you have a moment to revisit this list soon. Either way, Happy New Year! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:48, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
The day will come that I'll be able to give substantial attention to this topic, but it's going to be AT LEAST another 6-12 months. I'm committed to getting Moors Murders into shape first and that's a huge job on which, because of personal matters, I've been able to do very little beyond reading a two the book-length sources. In the meantime you're doing invaluable, wonderful work which I hope you'll continue. You're right about drafts but I've had bad experiences along those lines so if it's all the same to you I'd rather keep things as they are; if I die you have my permission, of course, continue our noble work in whatever way you see fit. I need your opinion

Extended content

Hello American friend, I would like you to answer me a question and I want to know if the people in your country have hated Mexicans, my editions are seen as pro white, they cause rejection, I only add the paintings I see in online books or in museums but of who the fault is if all paintings are awesome. I want your opinion if you like to answer must I continue expanding Mexican articles and highlighting Mexican history because the only thing I have seen is serious insults towards Mexicans made even by the Latinos themselves and all other groups, and wikipedia is seen by everyone, and I am almost certain that it is because of the editions that I make--BrugesFR (talk) 16:28, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

BrugesFR, I'm not sure I follow what you're asking, nor do I care to speak on behalf of Americans as a whole. Are you experiencing problems on specific articles, or with specific editors? ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:34, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

I say this because of the amount of comments on the social networks that talk about it. but I ask you why you follow me each of all the articles that I edit of Mexico but it was just a random question, it's not important that you answer--BrugesFR (talk) 16:45, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

BrugesFR, I'm sorry you're seeing negative comments on social media. The Internet can be so ugly sometimes. I'm not sure how to reply, but to your second point, you should know I'm not following your work. I created a lot of stubs for sites I saw in Mexico City and Puebla last year, so I often see your name in my watchlist as you make changes to those articles. I've appreciated your feedback re: naming conventions as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:07, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for answering, I thought you said like you don't want, as you pleased, to speak on behalf of Americans as a whole, "nor do I care" translated in Spanish is "no me da la gana" which is a form of expression to cut a conversation badly, as if you care about a brown cake not speaking on behalf, stupid spanish and its words full of offense, and excuse me for answering you like that, I got it wrong, I think so. Ok but what I was going to ask you that, because it has become viral to offend and hate Mexico, since I think one week ago, and obviously it has to do with my work in Wikipedia, and that hate, words and videos and everything on Youtube, Twitter and FB (and even sometimes in a tv channel of my country! haha), it comes from the countries of the rest of Latin America, the United States, Canada, latinos, whites, blacks, anyway, am I doing wrong? I am not even from that country, I am only from a country with much less things to be proud of, from a one of poorest South American country, so, I ask you to tell me, let's see, I continue filling the wikipedia of articles, paintings, and old photos, of Mexico? or stop? Am I doing wrong or good for the prestige of that country? If I continue at that rate I don't know what will happen, if they are going to make a world touristic fience to Mexico, and the rest of Latin America, and nobody is going to say that he is Mexican. I'm sorry if I'm asking you something that doesn't concern you, but I ask because I once thought that you also cared in some way about the Mexican country, or its buildings.--BrugesFR (talk) 21:49, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

BrugesFR, Sorry for how the sentence translated, but when I said "nor do I care" I was not trying to be rude, I was just saying I don't want to speak on behalf of others. I'm not really sure how else to response here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:53, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

I don't want to be rude either, but I felt like I was talking to my dog--BrugesFR (talk) 21:57, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Draft:Palette Town

Extended content

There isn't enough content for an article. There's 117,000+ malls in the US alone, so not every mall can be added just because it exists. Additionally, if it's only point of note is the Daikanransha ferris wheel, then the notability is not inherited and it'd likely be merged/deleted to that article. — IVORK Talk 00:47, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

IVORK, Palette Town is an entire complex. I am currently traveling (in Japan) but will add more sourcing ASAP. I'd still appreciate a move over the redirect into main space (with a tag to add more sourcing), but understand if you're unwilling at this time. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:50, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
I'll restore the request on WP:RM/TR and leave it for another editor should they wish. The fact wasn't about US malls specifically, but just the overwhelming commonality of malls worldwide meaning WP:EXISTS&WP:NOTINHERITED applies in my opinion. — IVORK Talk 00:57, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Agreed with the above. Even the error at Draft talk:Palette Town specifically states that "Template:Requested move is not for moves from draft or user space.", followed by instructions. Add the sourcing before the move, there's no need to move to the mainspace just so you can add more sourcing. -- /Alex/21 01:07, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Alex 21, I've moved plenty of drafts into main space via RM (when I can't move over a redirect), but no worries. Thanks ---Another Believer (Talk) 01:10, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know, but there's no reason you can't write right over the redirect if you want. Just copy and paste the draft, since you're the only author and there's no attribution history to worry about. Station1 (talk) 03:29, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

Else you do have extended mover perms Another Believer. The only difference between you and I is that I use the WP:PAGESWAP tool. I can't write over a redirect if it has anymore than just creation in it's history either. That tool is all you need to conduct these moves yourself. — IVORK Talk 01:49, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

Extended content
Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Speedy deletion nomination of O'naturel

  Resolved
Extended content

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on O'naturel requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. SunCrow (talk) 18:36, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Request for FAC assistance

Hello again! It has been forever since I messaged you lol. I hope you are doing well, and that you are enjoying the holidays to the fullest. This year has certainly flown by, and I cannot believe that the end of this year means the end of an entire decade. I was wondering if you could help with my current FAC? An editor suggested more people should look through the prose. I am grateful for each reviewer because they helped to improve the article immensely since the FAC started. I have been having a lot of fun learning about this quirky, little show. Apologies for the randomness of the request. I have been asking a few editors for advice, and I just remembered how helpful you have been in the past. Again, have a happy holidays! Aoba47 (talk) 04:54, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

Aoba47, Hello! I don't really do GAN/FAC reviews, but I'll see if I can take a peek at the article between holiday obligations. Have a happy holiday season and keep up the great work here at Wikipedia! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:37, 24 December 2019 (UTC)

For creating the Logan Memorial page, remember well several anti-war demonstrations there, and when the Democratic convention finally returned in 1996 Chicago actually greased the monument down so people couldn't climb on it (we had no intention to, vainly tried to "take" the Conrad Hilton Hotel instead but the marchers didn't follow-the-front and join in). good times. Randy Kryn (talk) 01:29, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

@Randy Kryn: I tend to create/improve articles about a city's public art when I get the chance to visit. I am always amazed at how few articles there are about a city's public art. For example, I think Category:Outdoor sculptures in Boston had 5 or 6 entries before recently. Happy New Year! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:43, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Every major city in the world should be competing to offer you a couple weeks free stay and let you loose on their public and private art collections. I've seen your work in several cities we've mutually conferenced in. The Boston category you mention went from the six to the 98 or so it sits at now. I too am also amazed at the lack of art coverage for most museums and public collections because I ask myself "where are the art students and historians?" who should be honoring both their expertise and the concept of Wikipedia. This carries over to other topics, and I am actually quite surprised (which doesn't happen to me often) that the Apollo space-related articles have so few editors adding to and polishing them in this first 50th anniversary year. It is an honor to edit them once in awhile, but where are the hundreds of other people who should be doing so and feeling such an honor as well? The crossing-of-the-line for subject matter experts and competent writers, or even amateurs interested in the subject, between reading Wikipedia and editing Wikipedia, must seem like a bridge too far for tens of thousands of people, and is a topic worthy of university or psychological academic analysis. That you do what you do is rare and unusual, and society is much better for it. That it's not more typical behavior is a mystery to me, and the overall lack of the number of Apollo page editors has brought that point more clearly to my awareness. Randy Kryn (talk) 22:29, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Completely agree, except that I'd suggest it's the neglected minor cities and towns that would get the most bang for their buck. EEng 23:31, 30 December 2019 (UTC)
Randy Kryn, I've had several people tell me I should be sponsored by cities to visit and cover public art, historic buildings, etc. If only this were possible! :) ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:06, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Don't know why it wouldn't be possible in a similar way to Wikipedians in Residence (I think many of them actually get paid, no?) as a Wikipedian in Transit. Not for everyone, but for those like yourself who have proven special talents and interests. Travel, housing, food, and local transportation at a minimum (and allowing the cities to offer personal monetary grants shouldn't be controversial) as a Wikipedian in Transit - lol as I type but serious as well. Randy Kryn (talk) 01:16, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
What a fantastic idea! No, really. Who do we know who knows who it is who knows how to get something like this into the WMF pipeline? Iridescent? EEng 02:45, 31 December 2019 (UTC)
Happy Roaring '20s EEng and AB. Yes, thinking more about this it makes sense and seems like an easy "sell" to the powers-that-B. Another Believer should pick a list of cities they'd like to work this out with, and not have to go with the highest bidder (the highest bidder became legal in Illinois today). A city or town government funding this project would likely give AB (or the very few others who would qualify as Wikipedians in Transit) assistance via government employees and local student interns who'd work at AB's direction as well as learn the ropes of Wikipedia. WIT can also apply to extremely qualified and proven editors specializing in articles on individual museums' holdings, on things such as local historical sites, or a myriad of other specialties. It would cost the foundation very little (although someone would have to take out insurance on the travelers) and many of the first cities involved could be initially arranged by three-minute phone calls from Wales, Maher, or a few others. I'm glad I suggested it as, not being a prolific article writer, I wouldn't be qualified as a Wikipedia in Transit, and am barely qualified to be a Wikipedian. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:08, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Getting cities to pay for something will be difficult and take a long time. My suggestion would be that WMF pay the costs, and the city's involvement would be to assign someone at their landmarks commission (etc.), who can also maybe corral some local-history types, and these people would work help him draw up an itinerary, arrange in advance for access to interiors, etc. Then when he's (she's?) there one of these locals could act as local guide, point out features of interest worth capturing, that sort of thing. To my layman's eye AB has a real talent [3] and every dollar invested in making it easier for him to do more wherever is goes is a good investment. EEng 18:42, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
Yes, good ideas. Or a combined funding program would work, initially by the foundation if it would agree to it, then eventually augmented by governmental expenditures (as well as from entities like local arts councils, etc.) and private individual or corporate funders who all understand not to expect advertising benefit. Given AB's already considerable and easily pointed-to track record, a one or two page proposal should be an easy write. AB, if you are agreeable to this, maybe you can pick one or three cities that would both benefit most from this and fit your style of gathering and writing article material, and that you'd enjoy working in. These can then be presented to WMF for support as well as for possible donors and governmental cooperation (and for those three-minute phone calls from Jimbo). Good job on catching those sources, that's what I'm looking for the articles. I actually searched before but I could only find anything but album reviews. Sp many articles that shouldn't exist at all and they do, mainly regarding music. MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 02:16, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

MarioSoulTruthFan, Happy to help, but please be careful about nominating articles for deletion unnecessarily. These were obvious keeps, to me, if you simply go some online searching at Google News. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:17, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
I have to try google news more often I guess. I had other stuff nominated if you want to help. MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 02:21, 28 December 2019 (UTC)
MarioSoulTruthFan, The point is to check for sources before nominating. I am not interested in following up inappropriate nominations by expanding articles, but I suggest you withdraw nominations if you think sourcing exists for the others. I am only interested in saving articles I've started or worked on before and have on my watchlist. ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:23, 28 December 2019 (UTC)

DYK for United Nations Plaza (San Francisco)

On 23 January 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article United Nations Plaza (San Francisco), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the City of San Francisco considers its United Nations Plaza eligible for landmark status due to its historical connection to the LGBTQ movement? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/United Nations Plaza (San Francisco). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, United Nations Plaza (San Francisco)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Greets AB, saw a thanks on a recent article and peeked over here. Wow! Thanks for all your contributions. I use a Cannon Elph 360 and Samsung Note 5 and have overlapping interests lol. Thanks for adding back the cats I dropped on FBoV.

I was wondering is it now frowned upon to columnify the refs with the 30em? I see you have reverted it a couple of times. Reason or rationale? I'm not looking to bicker, I don't want to keep doing something if I shouldn't. If it's preference I don't care.

Best. MrBill3 (talk) 21:20, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

MrBill3, Nice to e-meet you! The "reflist" template now automatically displays sources in 2 columns if there are 10 or more inline citations, so "|30em" is no longer necessary. Template:Reflist may have some helpful documentation. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:24, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

A Very Gaga Thanksgiving

Hello:

The copy edit you requested from the Guild of Copy Editors of the article A Very Gaga Thanksgiving has been completed.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

A couple of thoughts: The article does not indicate when the special was filmed, which is an important ommission. One of the most positive reviews of the show was by someone named Joe Drake on a website called TVology. I don't know for sure, but this appears to be a site where anyone can contribute and if so would likely be considered a dubious source.

Happy New Year. Regards,

Proposed deletion of Nail in the Coffin

  Resolved
Extended content

The article Nail in the Coffin has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unfortunately fails every opportunity for notability given in WP:NALBUM: It has only one media mention, has not charted, is not certified gold/platinum, not nominated for an award, no notable medium, was not (AFAIK) in national radio rotation, and was not covered by national broadcast TV reporting.

Would be good to start seeing which editors may want to participate again. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:56, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Hey You!

I've been f'ing around again lately, and I see you username on Oregon stuff. I think we might have been wiki friends back in the day (like 10 years ago). Or maybe enemies, or maybe just acquaintances. Any of that ring a bell? I remember there used to be someone who was like a lawyer and they were into local Oregon politics articles. And there was a guy called VanTuckey I think. And there was a guy who WP hired, and he actually had me flown to san francisco (see the pic on my user page). Do you remember any of this shit? Shoot. I don't even know what that is anymore. But I think you're right. I'd like to do something Oregon related. Like, just one thing where I'm not alone working on it. So keep me in mind. Obviously, it would be good to do something notable where it's easy to find sources. Peregrine Fisher (talk) 07:45, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Plaza del Sol (Gresham, Oregon)

  Resolved
Extended content

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Plaza del Sol (Gresham, Oregon) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company, corporation or organization that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia.

So, tell me: Why is it that you are trying to convince everybody to contribute to Draft:Stupid Love (Lady Gaga song) and yet, you ignore the fact that there is already an existing draft for Draft:Birds of Prey: The Album? You clearly saw this when creating Birds of Prey: The Album, as articles that don't yet have mainspace entries but do have drafts pop up with a box saying "There is a draft on this" while you're editing. The draft is an obvious tactic to have your work overwrite someone else's. You obviously don't care about working on others' drafts, so why should anyone else care about yours? Ss112 20:44, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Ss112 I am genuinely confused. When I searched "Birds of Prey: The Album" on Wikipedia, I saw a red link. I saw a notification saying a previous version of the page had been deleted, but I did not see that Draft:Birds of Prey: The Album existed. I honestly thought I was creating a new article because a draft did not exist. I'm not sure what I overlooked. Also, we've been over this before. I'm fine drafting when an article in the main space is not yet possible. If others want to collaborate on those drafts, great. If not, that's fine too. I don't have a problem moving drafts over redirects in the main space, regardless of who created the redirect (myself included). If someone moves their draft over a redirect I created, I move on to other things. Not a big deal. We're beating a dead hose here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:27, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
Ss112, To clarify, when I searched for "Birds of Prey: The Album" and clicked on the red link, I saw the page had been deleted/moved to Birds of Prey: The Album (Draft), which also appeared as a red link (and still does). This is why I did not know about the other draft page. Does this make sense? ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:29, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
I feel like you're acting like you don't know what I'm talking about. You created Birds of Prey: The Album in mainspace only yesterday (January 25). By that point, the draft had already been moved to the correct location for drafts (in this case, Draft:Birds of Prey: The Album) several days prior. Yes, it was originally moved to Birds of Prey: The Album (Draft) and this would have shown, but as I just said, it had already been moved to the "Draft:" title. Please don't act like you don't know that you saw a "There is a draft for this article" box when you created/edited the Birds of Prey: The Album. That shows up when you go to make a new article and there is already a matching Draft: space article for the same title; you know this. For a random example of a draft: Draft:Food Aid Dependency in Ethiopia is a draft. If I go to create Food Aid Dependency in Ethiopia, before you even click "Create this page", the page displays that there is a draft for the article. Even then, if you click "create this page" and go to start editing, before you even get to the editing box, it shows there is a draft for the article. You would have seen this. I just don't think you care. You would have made the article regardless of whether there is a draft on it or not. That shows a disregard for your fellow editors' work and a care only, or at the very least, primarily, for your own. Ss112 22:45, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

The only reason you're "not doing this again" is because you just got called out for ignoring the box showing that there was a draft because at first you played dumb. In future, I will not care if you have drafted an article and the box shows: I'll make it regardless, since you don't care for anybody else's draft, therefore I don't think anybody should care for yours. Move my comment into the collapsed box or revert me, I don't care. Your actions on Wikipedia like this go to show that you are very dishonest, sneaky and self-important. You like to put up a front that you're a benevolent do-gooder who stays out of drama and is only here to better the encyclopedia, but your actions speak louder than your words. Remember that. Ss112 22:54, 25 January 2020 (UTC)

Maybe instead of removing tags on ridiculous stubs that you've created, you could spend some time and add the missing information instead of hoping, or expecting other users to do it for you? You know, you spend all this time doing other things of a day but can't seem to be bothered working on articles you've created. Regardless, don't remove valid tags that highlight concerns about articles you've created. Thank you. Ss112 00:56, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Grammy Award nominees

Hi... just a quick question, are you planning to go back and expand all those articles you created for the 2020 Grammy nominees? I don't doubt their notability, but I can see a lot of annoyed editors if they just stay as one line of text, without an infobox, track listing, or sometimes even a source... Richard3120 (talk) 21:08, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

Richard3120, Yup! I wanted to get the ball rolling while the Grammy ceremony was being televised, and I'm glad I did because editors have already expanded a few of the stubs. I'm sure some editors don't like the stubs, but there's nothing wrong with having stubs for notable topics. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:10, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
Well, I should clarify, I don't plan to fully expand them all, but I've been making rounds to add infoboxes, categories, additional detail, etc, and hope to add track listings soon as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:13, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
Understood – I probably won't work on them myself, but so long as they all end up as at least basic stubs, I don't see a problem. Good luck with them. :-) Richard3120 (talk) 22:08, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:21, 27 January 2020 (UTC)
