Dear bhg, happy New Year et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis from Germany.

Problem: It seems that both above mentioned persons are either identical or the context was mixed, because in both lemmata appear next to similar works as author's reference. As it is a truly Irish question it would be nice if you could help to solve the riddle. Carpediem192931 (talk) 17:55, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Everyone agrees that "amp" links are a bad thing (see Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 202#Accelerated Mobile Pages links), but automating their removal requires a two-step that you might be able to figure out. Basically, we need a bot that can test to see whether a link with the "amp" component removed works just as well, and if so remove that component. If not, it should check to see whether the Internet Archive has an archived version of the url to switch to. BD2412 T 00:03, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the pointer, @BD2412. It sounds like a very good idea, but I will leave its implementation to others. That's partly because because the test step is beyond my current toolkit, but also because of a wider disillusionment.
My willingness to devote time to Wikipedia declined massively last September, when the vindictive mediocrities piled on yet again to denounce me for challenging failures to uphold policy. In this madhatter's tea party, there is no concern whatsoever that an admin asserted demonstrable falsehoods with bolded and underlined emphasis because they had not checked their facts, but outrage that someone challenged the folly.
That was about the tenth such pile-on, and I see little point in risking another. There are several possible explanations for this decline in Wikipedia culture, but the result of it all is that intellectual rigour is treated as a grave sin, while unexamined folly is held up as a virtue. I don't want to waste my time challenging this anti-intellectualism, or to face more of the rage of people who think that robust critique of error is a mortal sin, rather than the essential basis of any collaborative intellectual endeavour.
For example the dominant notion is that contributions to discussions should be brief assertions, and that rebuttal with evidence is unwelcome because it is necessarily much more verbose. That principle rigs discussions in favour of glib pile-ons and against rigorous assessment, which is the complete antithesis of everything I have spent four decades of adult life trying to achieve. The venom with which this vindictive anti-intellectualism is upheld makes it dangerous for me to participate much here: I don't want to expose myself to the pile-ons of the vindictive mediocrity who now dominate Wikipedia.
Seventeen years ago, Wikipedia appealed to me as an open venue for intellectual collaboration, but a generation later the balance of talent has shifted markedly. It seems to have deteriorated into a mutual support club for people who have never been through the painful but vital process of relentless intellectual challenge which I learnt in undergraduate tutorials forty years ago, people who are still at the "well tried, kid" stage of being coddled by a teacher with low expectations.
The result has been that since September, my appetite for Wikipedia has largely waned to the point where I have made less than 50 edits in the last two months, instead of my previous average of tens of thousands per month. That loss of appetite may change down the road, but for now every time I think about resuming work on my long to-do list or on bulk maintenance tasks, I decide that my energies are wasted here and that I would be much better doing some solid writing elsewhere, working with people who actually value robust critique.
Bless you for sticking with it.
Best wishes, BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:04, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I appreciate your position, and hope you feel better about things in the future. BD2412 T 00:53, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @BD2412, but I think that depends on whether there is a change of culture here, which seems extremely unlikely. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:53, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Can I ask if you feel that misogyny is a part of this. I have been an editor for just on 10 years with 1500+ well researched edits and I have had a new page rejected: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:DiJones_Real_Estate The person rejecting the article suggests resources 'for new editors'. The article is about a company started by a (now deceased) female entrepreneur and has a history section dealing with her achievements, most of which were in the 1990's. The basis for the rejection was 'advertisement'. I have created and greatly expanded articles about several male entrepreneurs and their companies with no trouble at all. I feel the same as you at the moment.PinkAechFas (talk) 05:57, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @PinkAechFas
I have just examined Draft:DiJones_Real_Estate and in my view the biggest problem is a failure to meet WP:GNG. There is not enough WP:SIGCOV in WP:Reliable sources to establish notability. As a result the article relies heavily on puffy coverage in sources of dubious quality, and comes across as promotional. It mostly consists of Jones's own claims rather than the assessments of others.
So I agree with @MarcGarver's conclusion, although I place much more emphasis on the lack of of WP:Notability.
As to misogyny, Wikipedia is a male-dominated environment, and in this sexist world that creates a systemic bias against women, both as editors and as encyclopaedic topics. Both of these are well documented by academic research. The problem is exacerbated by a number of factors, such as the fact Wikipedia's cohort of editors is dominated by young people from one country where discussion of these issues is dominated by a frenzied political and media culture, and by that culture's narrow particularly notions of many crucial concepts such as civility and bias.
I have no other experience of MarcGarver's work, so I cannot form any view on whether MarcGarver might have responded more favourably to a promotional draft about a man with problematic notability. All I can say that in this case their assessment was broadly sound, and I too would have rejected this draft.
So I offer you three suggestions:
  1. Spend some time studying WP:V, WP:RS and associated guidance. That will help you to make better judgements about whether a topic is suitable for inclusion in the encyclopedia.
  2. Use full citations, per WP:HOWCITE. Your citations lack source, author, publication date and publication place. Those omissions hugely impede assessment by readers and reviewers of the quality of sources.
(Personally, I would strongly support a rule that such grossly incomplete citations are unacceptable, and in particular that a draft with those flaws should never be promoted)
  3. Study WP:Good Article reviews, to see examples of how these issues are handled.
Hope this helps.
Best wishes, BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:33, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

I made no such assumption. Note that I used gender-neutral pronouns when referring to you. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:17, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
My apologies. I actually meant PinkAechFas, not you, was presuming I was male because my reading of their comments implied that I was unhappy with their draft as it was about a female and this might be a result of my bias. MarcGarver (talk) 17:12, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, @MarcGarver. But best to be explicit about who you are replying to, esp when your comment was placed as a reply to me.
As a general point, it's important to recognise that misogyny is not solely confined to males. When a prejudice is well-established in a culture, it becomes normalised and everyone who does not want to be branded as "troublemaker" etc ends up adopting it to some degree.
Sociologist Michael Flood at the University of Wollongong defines misogyny as the hatred of women, and notes:

Though most common in men, misogyny also exists in and is practiced by women against other women or even themselves. Misogyny functions as an ideology or belief system that has accompanied patriarchal, or male-dominated societies for thousands of years and continues to place women in subordinate positions with limited access to power and decision making. […] Aristotle contended that women exist as natural deformities or imperfect males […] Ever since, women in Western cultures have internalised their role as societal scapegoats, influenced in the twenty-first century by multimedia objectification of women with its culturally sanctioned self-loathing and fixations on plastic surgery, anorexia and bulimia.
Flood, Michael (July 18, 2007). International encyclopaedia of men and masculinities. ISBN 978-0-415-33343-6.

Some of the worst misogyny I have ever encountered has been from other women. I have also had numerous instances of reviewing my own conduct or attitudes, and recognising that I too had been following misogynistic norms. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:35, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's something I don't think I had considered before, although it doesn't surprise me as I have seen similar things before (e.g., racism directed at a member of a group from other members of the same group). I appreciate you taking the time to teach me something new, it's always welcome. Best, MarcGarver (talk) 12:07, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Documentation re missing country names

edit

Hi BHG, hope you are having a happy new year! – At least in real life. I'm sorry to read of your recent experiences described above to BD2412.

Anyway, I came here to mention that {{YYYY disasters in countryname category header}} and {{YYY0s disasters in countryname category header}} did not do well when Zimbabwe categories were renamed to e.g. Category:1970s disasters in Rhodesia. Each showed only an error like this:

Template:YYY0s disasters in countryname category header cannot find the adjectival form of the noun "Rhodesia".
For more info and suggested remedies, see Template:GetAdjectiveFromCountryName#Country name.

Well, there is nothing at the second link. You can test the template at, say, Category:1970s disasters in Rhodes.

I dug around and eventually found my way to Module:CountryAdjectiveDemonym/Adjectives, where I added a line of standing data which fixed that instance.

Is there a place with "info and suggested remedies", please? Rather than fix just one template, I thought I should report this to you as it probably affects a family of similar templates, and there might be a centralised place to fix them all.

Also, please note that I put some {{resolve category redirect}}s into both those templates. If you return to template maintenance & creation, their sibling templates & future similar ones could probably benefit from the same. – Fayenatic London 21:13, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

For info, I have added some documentation at Template:GetAdjectiveFromCountryName now. – Fayenatic London 14:33, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Reference update script

edit

Hey there

With this edit you replaced a link to http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_MEMO-13-203_en.htm, a specific and relevant press release, with a link to https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/home/en, the press homepage of the EU Commission which does not contain any useful information. I've fixed this. Please be careful when using scripts to ensure that you don't replace links with something irrelevant. Stifle (talk) 12:09, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Stifle, and thanks for the fix.
That edit[1] was nearly 2 years ago. Shortly after that I gave up using WP:ReFill because I found that it was doing far too many odd and undesirable things, and that I often missed at least some of the glitches -- as I missed that case of the ReFill bug of following redirects-to-root.
Sadly, many ref-filling tools are in poor shape: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:BrownHairedGirl/No-reflinks_websites#Reference-filling_tools
Even more sadly, much of the editor community is far too tolerant of the addition of bare or woefully-incomplete refs; most refs are not even archived. That combination of low standards and poor tools mean that far too many en.wp articles have poor verifiability, and are hard to fix. I spent about 15 months of my life working almost full-time on trying to fix this, but I have now given up. The lack of concern about this problem with upholding the core policy of WP:vis one of several factors which has left me severely disillusioned with Wikipedia, so that since September 2022 I have spent little time here. New Article Redirect

Hi BrownHairedGirl, I wonder if you can help. I recently attempted to move a page from my Sandbox to create a new article and it redirects to the previous article I created. Is there a way to publish my new article without it being a redirect to the old page? New article is Johnny Reynolds (footballer). Redirects to Trevor Bumstead. Any guidance appreciated. Many thanks. Dear BrownHairedGirl... could you please look at this page [2] and advise. Do you agree with the re-direct? Not sure how to proceed. Thanks, Phatblackmama (talk) 19:14, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Phatblackmama
I wholly endorse the decision by Onel5969‎ to redirect West Adams Neighborhood Council to Neighborhood councils of Los Angeles. As Onel5969 wrote in their edit summary, there is not enough in-depth coverage from independent, reliable sources to pass WP:GNG.
In fact, the article before the redirection had no independent sources at all. All the refs are to the LA Department of Neighborhood Councils, at https://empowerla.org/. You have supplied nothing at all to indicate notability.
I am sure that you meant well, but sadly your efforts on this topic have been wasted. That must be frustrating and depressing for you. So please take some time to read and carefully study WP:Notability, and learn how to identify topics which are truly notable. That way, your hard work will be published rather than zapped.
Best wishes, BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:49, 28 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your input. I has seen that the Mid-City West Neighborhood Council has this page that ONLY lists the neighborhoods within the Mid-City West area. Nothing more. And its only citations are neighborhood council maps and a city document that references the neighborhood council.
The genesis of the wikipedia page I created was this cited article [1] that names all the tracts within the West Adams empowerment zone (the area served by the West Adams Neighborhood Council). I went larger in scope than the Mid-City West page -- and made the article not just a list of the neighborhoods in the defined area, but also about the council itself, and citing grants it gave [2] and events it sponsored. [3]
So I guess my question is: Is the Mid-City West OK? A page just detailing just the area the council serves? Yours, Phatblackmama (talk) 00:24, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Phatblackmama, I have a better idea.
Instead of asking me for my view, why don't you write your own assessment of whether the refs in Mid-City West, Los Angeles establish the notability of the topic per WP:GNG?
GNG requires "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject". So for each ref there are four questions to ask:
  1. Does this source provide significant coverage? (see WP:SIGCOV)
  2. Is this a WP:Reliable source?
  3. Is this a secondary source?
  4. is this source independent of the subject? This excludes works produced by the article's subject or someone affiliated with it.
If you reply with your assessment of the refs in Mid-City West, Los Angeles against each of those 4 criteria, then I will be happy to give you my view of your assessment. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:01, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Significant coverage? No. They are boundary maps and a letter from the council about utility rates.
Reliable Source? Yes. The maps are government produced.
Secondary Source? No. These are primary sources.
Source independent of the subject? No. All are produced by the subject.
So now what happens? Phatblackmama (talk) 01:42, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Phatblackmama: good analysis!
The options are either:
  1. delete the article, via WP:PROD or WP:AFD
  2. WP:BOLDly redirect the page to some other article.
Personally, I'd just redirect it. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:52, 1 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hey @BrownHairedGirl i was trying to publish this Draft:Luis O. Gómez pls help me Annki777 (talk) 16:24, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

(talk page watcher) @Annki777 The article doesn't seem to say anything about him and why he was notable. If you have access to Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Library you can see the full text of the obituary "A Tribute to Professor Luis O. Gómez (1943–2017) ", and there is plenty of information there to pick a few highlights of his academic career and show why he was notable. It isn't enough to list a few of his publications: every academic publishes, usually many papers. See WP:NPROF for the kind of information a reviewer will expect to see to demonstrate notability. I hope that helps. PamD 16:42, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Note also that the Barabadur book was co-edited by him, not co-authored: makes quite a difference. Please adjust the listing. But if that academic review makes any comments which praise the editors for assembling such a good book, or something like that, it would be worth quoting it: "the reviewer in Journal of Southeast Asian Studies praised the editors' for ...", that sort of thing. PamD 16:52, 4 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Annki777. Sorry, but I don't have the time or energy these days to give you any substantive help.
However, I took a quick glance, and I agree with the assessment by the highly-experienced @PamD that the draft provides nothing to satisfy either WP:GNG or WP:PROF.
I see that you have resubmitted the article to AFC several times, which must be a frustrating process for you and for the AFC reviewers. Please take time to read and study WP:GNG & WP:PROF so that you understand the criteria for notability. That way, you will make better use of any time you spend on the topic, and the reviewers will also be happier. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:12, 5 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi BrownHairedGirl,

Sorry for the interruption,

Happened to came across your talk page,

Actually I have created page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:2004_Indian_general_election_in_Uttar_Pradesh which is already pending for review.

All I see is huge backlog of reviewing other articles too which is increasing by day.

Please help me out if possible in reviewing the draft or looping in other editor or admin who can quickly review and update me as I am not sure whom to reach out for early review and resolution, otherwise it may take a much longer time for the answer.

Waiting for your timely response and help whichever is possible at your end.

Why did you add a reference titled "Free Live Sex Cams" onto the Ricardo Alonso article?

edit

Sorry if this is something weird that happened and I'm not accusing you of something, especially given who you are--but while looking at the Ricardo Alonso article I noticed that one of the references had the title "Free Live Sex Cams" and that according to the history of the page, that you added it all the way back in February 2022.

I assume that something weird happened to the link post-edit and that it is just an unfortunate accident that came about due to it being a neglected page. RaskBunzzz (talk) 09:49, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia and...

edit

Hi there. I just noticed a category in the various Wikimedia New York City category tree that it looks like you created in 2020: Category:Wikipedia and Wikimedia New York City. It looks like you moved almost everything out of Category:Wikimedia New York City and into that category, which has an identical function (while the former still exists). Curious why? I find the title ("Wikipedia and Wikimedia New York City") confusing, since it seems to deal only with Wikimedia New York City? Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:36, 30 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Rhododendrites: it was for consistency. See Category:Wikipedia and Wikimedia chapters. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:21, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I guess I'd just reframe the question: why "Wikipedia and Wikimedia chapters"? "Wikipedia and Wikimedia NYC" is only about "Wikimedia NYC" (not "Wikipedia and Wikimedia NYC") for example. Just seems like an unnecessary "Wikipedia and" confusingly inserted? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 02:51, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Rhododendrites: I dunno why you ask me that: I didn't choose that naming convention. As above, I just followed the existing convention while tidying up a mishmash that was hard to navigate.
The "Wikipedia and" prefix fits the wider naming convention that categories for administrative pages begin with "Wikipedia", to distinguish them from content categories.
If you can think of a better approach, then feel free to open a group CFD to rename all the subcats of Category:Wikipedia and Wikimedia chapters, so that they are consistent in a new format.
These are not content categories, so I see little point in directing editorial time to such a discussion. But you may have different priorities. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:43, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I didn't choose that naming convention. As above, I just followed the existing convention while tidying up a mishmash that was hard to navigate. - But... didn't you create the "Wikipedia and Wikimedia" convention? :) (it looks like you started all of those categories and the parent)? Or you're saying that the existing convention is that everything outside of content has to start with "Wikipedia"? Is that documented somewhere? If it's the case, it's strange that the parent categories are "Wikipedia and Wikimedia", but they're full of categories like "Wikimedia New York City in 2015" (not "Wikipedia and Wikimedia New York City in 2015"), not to mention Wiki clubs in Australia, WikiClubWest, Oxford Wikimedia events, Touro College meetups, AfroCROWD, Brooklyn Culture Walk, etc. In other words, I'm not so sure there really is a standard for these (or perhaps we've just been failing to abide by it for years).
I get the impression this is not an area of the project you particularly care about, which is fine. I was going to ask if you had thoughts about a big picture category system tying together affiliates, years, locations, type of event, "meetups", etc., as, effectively, Chief Wiki Categorizer, but if it's not of interest no worries. The only reason I noticed the "Wikipedia and Wikimedia" category is because someone was trying to categorize some new pages (and some old ones) and had questions about how all the WMNYC/meetup categories fit together. I noticed this one and found it confusing, so figured I'd ask the person who created it.
These categories may not be particularly fascinating compared to content categories, but they're important internally to Wikimedia chapters and affiliates because for better or worse they wind up as one of our primary forms of documentation. They're important for recordkeeping in general as well as doing the requisite reporting to the WMF. They occasionally get linked to from documents both on- and off-wiki. One of the things I hope that we can do sometime in the next year is to do a better job of documenting "so you want to create an event page" with naming conventions and such. Obviously that's compatible with what you're saying, but I'd also like the conventions to be fairly intuitive, which "Wikipedia and Wikimedia...", when it's specifically about the affiliate Wikimedia New York City, isn't (IMO).
Anyway, as you say, a CfD is kind of a hassle. Would you object to these parent categories simply being moved back (such that they match their subcategories and correspond to the organizations' names)? i.e. Wikipedia and Wikimedia Australia → Wikimedia Australia, and so on? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:24, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Rhododendrites: I would indeed object, because it would undermine the principle that non-content categories have a title beginning with "Wikipedia". I can't recall what discussion came up with the "Wikipedia and Wikimedia" convention, but it was not my idea.
Anyway, I should be clear that (as you guessed) I have no interest in Wikimedia chapters, other than to deplore the vast sums of money wasted on them by the WMF, while the core business of software has so many long-term flaws and omissions (as set out in the annual community wishlists). Even the obscene salary of the WMF CEO (97% of the POTUS's salary!) is trivial by comparison with the near US$10million spent on awards and grants.
I standardised that category tree, as a cleanup exercise similar to what I have done with so may other parts of the category tree. The so-called "chapters" have had more than enough of my time, so please can you leave me out of this? If you want to open a group CFD, feel free to do so and link to this discussion.
Best wishes, BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:01, 31 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Please take care not to tag articles for "may not meet Notability" when they do in fact satisfy a WP:SNG. In this case, WP:MUSICBIO point #6 - ".. is a musician who has been a reasonably prominent member of two or more independently notable ensembles ..." - namely, Hawkwind and Steve Took's Horns. Not only was/is this made clear in the opening paragraph but there was/is a note on the talk page highlighting this. Thank you.

Thank you! But the template is in English and you need this format "Category:Sport North American 2008 in".--Takhirgeran Umar (talk) 18:28, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Takhirgeran Umar: I work only on en.wp. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:00, 20 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @Takhirgeran Umar: It looks like some parts of the template, such as -->|year={{#invoke:String|replace|{{PAGENAME}}|^Thể thao %a.- (%d%d%d%d) шарахь?$|%1|1|false}}<!--, are still in Vietnamese and need to be translated to Chechen. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:22, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

ReferenceExpander

edit

Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. I and several other users have !voted that the script be deleted or disabled, and I wouldn't recommend using it at all unless you thoroughly check every reference it modifies against the previous revision. If you're interested in a more detailed explanation of the script's issues, Folly Mox has provided an excellent summary at the MFD. — SamX [talk · contribs] 04:57, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, @SamX. I am aware of the issues: see User:BrownHairedGirl/No-reflinks_websites#Reference-filling_tools. It still has its uses, but it needs to be used with care. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 06:22, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category:Association football players by nationality

edit

Please note that the subcats in Category:Association football players by nationality are non-diffusing... GiantSnowman 18:09, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@GiantSnowman non-diffusing categs should be tagged with {{Non-diffusing parent category}}. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:12, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I agree, some are and some aren't... GiantSnowman 18:19, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowman please stop reverting. You are removing articles from categories in which they do belong.
If you want, re-add Category:Association footballers from Northern Ireland. But don't remove the new cats. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:25, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
no, if you want to add new categories, feel free - but do not remove the non-diffusing category. GiantSnowman 18:26, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowman: reverting is NOT the way to achieve what you want. Please stop and discuss or I go to ANI. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:28, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Feel free to raise at ANI - boomerang applies, of course. I've reverted everything I intend to (those on my watchlist), and am happy to support you adding new 'from' categories, but you should not revert the nationality category. GiantSnowman 18:30, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
I will revert your reverts.
If you wa nt to re-add Category:Association footballers from Northern Ireland, feel free to do so. But stop depoplating the subcats. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:32, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Why are you still reverting and asking me to stop and discuss, when I have discussed? You are breaching BRD. Threatening to revert my reverts shows you are edit warring. I am trying to work with you here, you are just being disruptive. GiantSnowman 18:33, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowmanL if you want o work wit me, then mass reverts are no way to proceed. YOU are just being disruptive. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:35, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
This is literally all that was needed... (and pot, kettle, black much?) GiantSnowman 18:35, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowman: eavctly. That is what you should have done, rather than mass reverts. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:37, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
In future, perhaps think about your edits and consider discussing ideas with the relevant WikiProject before making hundreds of wrong edits, saving everyone time and effort. GiantSnowman 18:40, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowman: diffusing categories is routine maintenance. It does not require prior approval.
If a WikiProject wants a cat to be non-diffusing, then mark it as such, rather than blaming me for the omission. Your aggressive, snide, disruptive, edit-warring response is a huge time-waster and conflict-maker. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:45, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) you both seem to be having a very heated argument over a very minor matter. And it sounds like the issue is resolved so please can I advise you take a deep breath and stop tearing lumps out of each other.  — Amakuru (talk) 18:48, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Amakuru: rather than bothsidesism, please ask GS to stop his aggresive edit-warring.
Te issue is nor resolved. I now have half an hours work undoing GS's disruption. At all times, I have responded promptly, but instead of discussing, GS just went on a revert spree, making a huge lot of avoidable work.
This sort of bullying carp makes me hate Wikipedia. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:55, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Well, it takes two to edit war. I have no idea who's right and who's wrong in this instance, seems like the sort of decision you could make either way...  — Amakuru (talk) 19:08, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Amakuru: we were discussing. Then GS startedd mass-reverts without warning. That's appalling conduct.
Note that Category:Association footballers from Northern Ireland is NOT tagged as non-diffusing, so GS has no basis for mass-reverts. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:11, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Over a decade ago I had a similar conversation with GiantSnowman when I advised him that there is a simple solution: that he or WP:FOOTY simply tag such categories as non-diffusing. It would save a lot of hassle and avoid such situations. I can only repeat that advice. Valenciano (talk) 19:24, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Valenciano: a decade ago. And still GS hasn't learnt.
sadly, my experience with GS that GS's rapid resort to a bullying drama is not surprising. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:32, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
BHG, please retract your accusations of "bullying", which you have stated here and in multiple edit summaries. GiantSnowman 20:37, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
No. Your mass reverts without warning while discussion was underway were a form of bullying. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:40, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
BHG, I tagged the English category in March 2020 as non-diffusing, and you edited that category in April 2022, so you knew (or ought to have known) that that category type was non-diffusing... GiantSnowman 20:46, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Please stop being silly. I edit thousands of cat pages. I don't recall all their attributes. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:48, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
And yet you expect me to remember a comment from "over a decade ago"?! GiantSnowman 21:07, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowman: Football is your thing. These cats being allegedly non-diffusing is your thing. So yes, you should know how to tag.
I am willing to discuss the substance, but I have had enough of your sniping and your bullying. Any more of this nonsense will be deleted. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:13, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi both, I have added the Non-diffusing parent category tag to Category:Association footballers from Northern Ireland, and have added back that category to every relevant article, without removing or altering any of the County/City subcats that have been created. Hope that is useful and apologies if not. Crowsus (talk) 23:02, 1 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed GA nomination of Angela Merkel

edit

Hi! I'd like to nominate Angela Merkel for consideration as a Good Article, and I'm reaching out to you as you are one of its most significant contributors. I have fixed some issues with that article, and I expanded it a little in some places, but I still feel that this is the right way to go per WP:GAN/I#N1.

Please let me know what you think of this. I'm also reaching out to some other top contributors, but one of them has been banned, and another one hasn't been active since 2018. Actualcpscm (talk) 20:08, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Actualcpscm: my edits to that article were all drive-by. I wish you luck with your work on improving the article, but it's not my field, so I won't be helping. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 20:14, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I expected to take this task on by myself from the beginning, that's just part of the processes. Happy editing! Actualcpscm (talk) 20:16, 3 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
