Interface administrator changes
- An RfC on the administrator resysop criteria was closed. 18 proposals have been summarised with a variety of supported and opposed statements. The inactivity grace period within which a new request for adminship is not required has been reduced from three years to two. Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.
- Following a proposal, the edit filter mailing list has been opened up to users with the Edit Filter Helper right.
- Wikimedia projects can set a default block length for users via MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry. A new page, MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry-ip, allows the setting of a different default block length for IP editors. Neither is currently used. (T219126)

Additional nomination
Congratulations on your appointment. San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge half dollar has been awaiting promotion for two weeks. I trust there is no objection to my nomination of New Rochelle 250th Anniversary half dollar. It is hard enough to attract reviews these days, there starts to be a difficulty when nominations start to cannibalize reviews from the one that would come next simply by sitting on the nomination page for extended periods of time, and I look forward to your finding your feet as coordinator and helping to bring down these extended backlogs. All the best,--Wehwalt (talk) 08:34, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!
Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. We are relaxing the rule that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2020 will count; now to be eligible for points in the competition, you must have completed significant work on the content at some time! Any questions on the rules or on anything else connected to the Cup should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. Good luck! Cultural depictions
Hi Ealdgyth. Happy New Year. Can you take a look at Talk:Ealhswith#"Unjustified?". Dudley Miles (talk) 11:39, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- The relevant guideline is Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trivia sections#"In popular culture" and "Cultural references" material and the RfC which closed with "The consensus is very clear that a secondary source is required in almost all cases. A tertiary source is even better, if available. In the rare case that a primary source is judged to be sufficient, it should be properly cited. The source(s) cited should not only establish the verifiability of the pop culture reference, but also its significance." ... so secondary sources discussing the cultural depiction are needed. - Thanks. Dudley Miles (talk) 15:47, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

- A request for comment asks whether partial blocks should be enabled on the English Wikipedia. If enabled, this functionality would allow administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces, rather than the entire site.
- A proposal asks whether admins who don't use their tools for a significant period of time (e.g. five years) should have the toolset procedurally removed.
- Following a successful RfC, a whitelist is now available for users whose redirects will be autopatrolled by a bot, removing them from the new pages patrol queue. Admins can add such users to Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist after a discussion following the guidelines at Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect whitelist.

I think you may have mixed this up with the actual massacre article. This one is the video game. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:21, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- Here is the discussion four years ago on a request to run this article on TFA. Brian got it right then. There is no way this article should run, especially on the anniversary of this horror. Kablammo (talk) 00:30, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
- I will vehemently oppose running anything like a game based off that massacre. Talk about tasteless. If it runs, it can run on some other date. Ealdgyth - Talk 00:38, 26 January 2020 (UTC)
Once more, with feeling.
When you put your foot down, it really goes down and stays down, doesn't it? I'll wait, in awe, for the first person brave enough to underpost you on that FAC. Yomanganitalk 14:26, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

- OK, I dared. Recognizing that some people disliked it (too bad), this is a perfect example of when the old "restart technique" was useful. The page is full of blather. Real improvements or criticisms are lost. Valid and invalid are blurred. You wipe the page clean, add at the top a diff to the old commentary, ping everyone back and tell them to give their opinion without rehashing. Pisses people off by lets them know they aren't going to continue this way, and rarely has to be used (eg, Catholic Church). SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:46, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Alternately, if the "restart" still freaks people out, you move the whole review to the talk page of the FAC, add a diff of the move, and ping everyone back for a fresh start with a warning not to rehash. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:48, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- That's a cop-out underpost, Sandy, I'm not counting that. Yomanganitalk 14:50, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Ha, don't tempt me ... if I wanted to be really bad ass, I'd go and do what I suggest Ealdgyth do :) But that would not be cool ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 14:52, 28 January 2020 (UTC)

- The problem with the "restart" is that there is only one review that is open. Everyone else has done their review and supported, and they were all after F&F's oppose. There seems little benefit in restarting 11 completed and supporting reviews just for the one that is still open. - SchroCat (talk) 15:19, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Schro, a page with 11 supports, followed by one open review is much clearer, cleaner, easier for the coords to process, and makes a strong impact :) As well as sending a strong message about acceptable reviews at FAC. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:22, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Possibly - but it does waste the time and goodwill of the eleven editors who have already supported.
- You are right to say that, in that one open review, valid and invalid points are blurred, some dealt with, others possibly lost in the noise. This is why I put in a request to the co-ords to clarify what, in their opinion and in line with the FA criteria, actually needs addressing (and stylistic points on use of "career" and "profession" don't, as far as I am concered). That was only requested earlier today, and Ealdgyth has referred to that process in her post, so hopefully there will be some resolution of some areas before long. - SchroCat (talk) 15:29, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- (ec X2) Folks, can we NOT fuel further discussion in yet other places. I'm WORKING on it. But .. yes, it needs to be handled with some care and I'm not in a place where typing is easy. A nice quiet cool down on all "sides" would be appreciated, not a further rehashing of the situation all over the place. That isn't going to help calm the waters, which is what I would like, thank you. Did I mention it's been a shitty ass week? Had to put down a horse Sunday ... while I was on the road with hubby, so son had to deal with that. And hubby's work has screwed up his payroll to hell and back so THAT's stressful. And (petty but important to dealing with Wiki) the ergonomic keyboard I brought along for the road trip has developed a glitch and isn't working any longer so I'm working on a "standard" keyboard for the first time in 35 years. One reason I don't have carpal tunnel after all the years working as a person who spends ages on the computer is that I've religiously used ergonomic keyboards ... which means my typo rate on a non-ergonomic is through the roof. Still trying to find a way to dispose of the horse ... it's winter in Wisconsin and yeah... we'd like to bury him on the property (I'm still tearing up at losing him) but finding a way to do that is ... difficult. The FAC is on my plate, I'll have something up reasonably soon. No, its not likely to be a restart - I'm a bit more "proactive" than that in my approach to FAC - i lean a bit more towards throwing my "weight" around some and in this situation, the second FAC was pretty much a restart in all but name, honestly. Doesn't seem to have worked, so we'll try something else. Ealdgyth - Talk 15:31, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Ealdgyth, Sounds like a shitty week, and I'm sorry this adds to it. I didn't mean this to be a 'further discussion' set of comments - just a bit by way of clarification to SG. You are right to say that this FAC was a restart: I meant it as such to force a separation in the original break in communications in the hope that this second one would be different; you're right: that didn't work either. I hope your week improves - there's no rush from my side: I've already said I'll sit out on dealing with review comments until the weekend just so it's not a question of rehashing the same points yet again, so whenever you're ready is fine with me. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 15:39, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
- Oh, Ealdgyth, I am so so sorry about your horse :( :( Having dealt with burying horses, and having buried a 5-lb Yorkie in the winter with the ground frozen, I can only imagine how you feel not only about losing the horse, but about having to find a means of burial. So sorry :( I will stay out (couldn't resist the temptation from Yoman, but sorry to make things harder :) Since no one has responded to my post at the FAC, I shall go remove it. Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk)
- Too late. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 15:42, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
