New Article

I have a new article called Split of CBS Corporation and Viacom. Can you review? Thanks! Merv Mat (talk) 4:17, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

Merv Mat, I'm not an expert in this kind of article, but I'm worried it may get nominated for WP:AfD. It relies very heavily on primary sources and may not demonstrate lasting notability beyond one event. If you can find any secondary reports or scholarship about the split, that would strengthen the article quite a bit. Fritzmann (message me) 02:52, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello! Please tell me, how to write a Biography of a living personality involved in Creating awareness regarding health, hygiene and superstitions. --Uttara Dey Sarkar (talk) 13:49, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Uttara Dey Sarkar, Wikipedia has strict standards for biographies about living people. Please make sure to read and understand that guide before you write an article. GA Process for Telephone-Pole beetle

Hello! About a month ago I had submitted a DYK nomination for the telephone-pole beetle, and you commented that it has the potential to reach GA status with some work. Would you be able to help me through this process? Thanks!MichelleLi455 (talk) 17:43, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

MichelleLi455, absolutely! I am currently working with the author of Thistle tortoise beetle to do the same process. Take a look at the talk page there; I would have a lot of similar comments for your article. See if some of those critiques are applicable and do your best to implement them, and then nominate it for GAN! I will probably be able to start reviewing it in detail sometime next week. Also be sure to carefully read the article and copyedit it for any spelling and grammar mistakes. Glad to have you working so thoroughly on this topic! Hello I made a wiki page and it won't let me change the name to get rid off draft from the name, how do I do it? --RobertsC812 (talk) 18:48, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

RobertsC812, I've added the template for how you submit on the draft. Please read the instructions there for what is required in the article before it is no longer a draft. Fritzmann (message me) 11:40, 24 April 2024 (UTC)

Redirect

Hi,

Mandazi is commonly referred to as Mahamri [1]. How would I create a redirect for the Mandazi page accordingly?

Any ideas for how to include this fact in the article and whether I can use this as a reference that Mahamri is often called Mandazi (since it says Mahamri or Mandazi).

Also, I think @Dr. Trafalgar D Water Law in the post above meant MTV Splitsvilla (season 15). He seems to be pretty active on that page.

Thanks. Pingy/Pongy 17:42, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello DingDongPingPong, Mahamri is already a redirect to Mandazi. Reading the article, it also already mentions the other name in the infobox and in the section called "Preparation". Fritzmann (message me) 18:21, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks!
But, in general, how do I add a redirect? Pingy/Pongy 20:13, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Help:Redirect gives a very good guide, and you can even create new redirects directly from that page. Fritzmann (message me) 22:31, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Birdephant on G. A. Vadivelu (23:18, 26 April 2024)

Hello! I'm just getting started as an editor. Dipping toe in, I tried to "copy edit" pages suggested by wiki. These pages had been flagged with issues larger than problems with copy. This one for example is highly partisan. Can you suggest a better approach to get started? --Birdephant (talk) 23:18, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

Birdephant, thank you for your contributions so far! Yes, many pages that need copyediting also have other issues. I recommend looking at The Wikipedia Adventure, which is kind of a game-ified introduction to wikipedia. It will give you a lot of the skills you need to figure out those articles that are more complex, and even add information to things you are passionate about. I'm also available as a resource if you have more specific questions in the future and can help you with problems you run into. Very Respectfully, Fritzmann (message me) 12:40, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, that’s helpful - I will check it out. Birdephant (talk) 01:43, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from DexterlyCell (13:28, 3 May 2024)

I want to create an article about Brawl Stars, a game by Supercell. Can you read this article and tell me how I did?

Brawl Stars is a free-to-play game by Supercell. Brawl Stars consists of many characters to choose from, each having their own abilities. Battle of in Showdown, or maybe try out the new Ranked mode. No matter what player you are, you are sure to have fun. Want a friend to join with you in the battle? With the friend code, you can! Just go to friends, tell them your code, and boom! If Showdown is too boring, than try the other game modes. Supercell is updating the game consistently, so you will always have something new to do. This game may be free-to-play, but it is also pay-to-win. Have some birthday money that you just want to spend? With the shop, there are always new skins, skins, and skins to buy! Let's dive into the Ranked game mode. In Ranked, you will be paired up with people of your similar skill level (like showdown, but different), and the games are chosen randomly. Every time the new season starts, there are modifiers that will change how you play. With all this excitement, what will be next! Let's talk about Gem Grab, a 3v3 match all about grabbing the most gems. When you die, you lose your gems. With this fast-paced game mode, you will be sure to tier up fast. Brawl Ball, the soccer-based game mode about scoring goals. Join in another 3v3 of fun! Thank you for reading this article. I will update this for some of the best characters. --DexterlyCell (talk) 13:28, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

DexterlyCell, this article already exists at Brawl Stars. I also recommend you read our policy on tone of writing in encyclopedic articles. Fritzmann (message me) 14:27, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
Could I update it? DexterlyCell (talk) 13:09, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
Due to repeated vandalism at that article, it is semi-protected from edits by new editors. If you have parts of it you want to improve with reliable sources, place a message on the talk page with your suggestion. Fritzmann (message me) 13:18, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Request for Review and Feedback on Michelle Valberg Article

Hello!

I am currently working on a new Wikipedia article about Michelle Valberg, a prominent Canadian wildlife and nature photographer. Given your experience and expertise, I would greatly appreciate your review and feedback on this draft to ensure its accuracy, neutrality, and compliance with Wikipedia's guidelines.

The article covers various aspects of Michelle Valberg's career, her contributions to photography, and her philanthropic efforts, particularly through Project North. I aim to create a well-rounded and informative article that reflects her significant impact on both photography and community support in the Arctic regions.

Here is the link to the draft: Draft:Michelle Valberg

I would be grateful for any suggestions you might have on improving the article, especially regarding the balance of content and adherence to Wikipedia’s style and standards.

Thank you so much! Best regards Bojamon (talk) 16:46, 10 May 2024 (UTC)

Bojamon, I'm not particularly well-versed in BLP articles, but after giving it a quick look it seems to be in pretty good shape. Here are just a few things I noticed:
  • There are a lot of subsections in the Career part; can you merge any of them? You can probably just have each of the topics be its own paragraph within the Career section, without needing any of the subheadings.
  • Parts of the personal life section should not be included, like where she spends her time
  • There is a lot of commentary on Valberg's motivations or commitments. These should be trimmed down and the article should focus solely on what she has done, or what recognition she has received
Other than that, let me know when you submit the draft for review and I can assist with anything the reviewer might point out that I missed. Fritzmann (message me) 13:50, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much for taking the time to look at it, I really appreciate the pointers and will make those changes. I'll let you know once I've submitted the draft for review! Thanks again. Bojamon (talk) 20:52, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from UBCYR829 (06:42, 22 May 2024)

Hello Fritzmann2002‬! I was curious how long (generally) does it take for my edits to be verified by Wikipedia and be approved? Thank you. --UBCYR829 (talk) 06:42, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

@UBCYR829: all pending edits on articles that have edit protection are approved by volunteers, so the time it takes can vary. In your case, another editor reviewed your edits within about half an hour, but they were reverted for a few reasons. The biggest one is that the lead of an article is supposed to be a short summary of its contents; in-depth details and commentary don't belong there. Those should go in the body of the article, where the bulk of the content is. If you have more questions about editing, feel free to let me know! Fritzmann (message me) 14:52, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Guitram (16:30, 2 July 2024)

I'm wanting to start my own page to link my name that is already mentioned in Wikipedia pages. I'm a 74 year old guitarist Johnny Vernazza. Can't seem to get out of editing or the "Sandbox" Thank you in advance for any help as IT is not my forte' music is. --Guitram (talk) 16:30, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Hello Guitram, I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do. This is an online encyclopedia, and only subjects with Reliable Sources meet our criteria for articles. Additionally, creating an article for yourself means you have a conflict of interest, which is also against the guidelines. Fritzmann (message me) 18:51, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes I understand. I want to have my own Wikipedia page. I have been a professional Union musician since 1963 playing on hit records in the 1970's. My name is mentioned on Elvin Bishop's page , but not high lighted. I have years of press, reliable sources, appeared on TV music shows in the 70's played on well over 20 LPs on major record labels including the #3 Billboard hit " Fooled Around and Fell in Love" What do I need to do? Can I do this myself or need to hire someone? Thank you Guitram (talk) 19:09, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
www.johnnyv.net Guitram (talk) 19:11, 2 July 2024 (UTC)
Guitram, all editors on Wikipedia are volunteers, and paid editing is generally frowned upon. I'm not someone who knows how to write music articles, or is interested in writing them. However, I can recommend you to post on this page, which is where some music editors coordinate their efforts. As I mentioned earlier, creating an article about yourself means it will not be neutral or unbiased, so it is generally not allowed. What you could do is start a draft (click this link and then Launch the Article Wizard. Then if another editor wants to pick it up (which they aren't obligated to), they'll have a foundation and a starting point. Fritzmann (message me) 01:52, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

Anupam.yadaav, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Articles for creation to submit the article for review. You will have to copy and paste your sandbox into a draft article, but a step by step explanation is available at that link. Fritzmann (message me) 12:01, 21 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from KiraWorks (12:44, 1 September 2024)

Hello Mentor! I'm trying to add a new info with corresponding citation under references tab but the system is tagging the citation to already existing some no. 11. However, I'm adding a new reference at no. 13 hyperlink. Can you kindly help? It's my first day here & second article suggested by Wikipedia. Thanks --KiraWorks (talk) 12:44, 1 September 2024 (UTC)

KiraWorks, for an introduction to referencing, see Wikipedia:Citing sources. It looks like what you are doing is manually typing in an [11] to create a reference, where you need to click the "Cite" button along the top of your wikipedia toolbar. That will allow you to automatically insert a reference using proper markup. Let me know if you have follow up questions! Fritzmann (message me) 00:59, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

I smile every time I see a new one of your Hypericum articles at GAN; a strong focus on a niche topic, especially in a deeply underappreciated area on-wiki such as botany, is always a gift to the wiki. There's only what, a few hundred more species to go? :D Generalissima (talk) (it/she) 02:05, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
Thank you Generalissima! You'll be happy to know I'm finally starting to branch out, while sticking to branches in general; I recently nominated plant micro-reserve and am working on Penstemon gentianoides. And yes, only a few hundred more to go! I did the math recently and I think I'll finish in ninety years or so if I keep up my current pace, but slow and steady always beats rushed and halfhearted! GA Review Circles

Hi! I'm looking at your two of your recent GA articles – Hypericum sect. Adenotrias and Hypericum huber-morathii. It looks like they have gone through the GARC process. I'm concerned because they could be reviewed by people unfamiliar with the Plants project (and this could be the case in non-GARC reviews), and as you know, botany is complicated and the Project does (and in my opinion, rightly so) have some specific requirements (or best practices, if you prefer) for taxon and botanist articles. I have not spent time deeply studying these two yet, so I can't say that they don't follow ideal GA Plants project practices for taxa until I do that. What has been your feel so far about this new GARC process? Does it seem things get rushed? Would it be best if plants articles stick with plants reviewers for GA? Your thoughts welcomed. I had been on an extended Wikibreak (about a year and a half), and a lot can happen in that timeframe! Thanks, Fritzmann2002. – Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 16:05, 29 September 2024 (UTC)

Categorizing species

When you categorize a species article using a genus category, you need to add a category key to ensure that the articles are organized correctly when the category is displayed, namely by the specific name/epithet. So for Glaucium flavum for example, add [[Category:Glaucium|flavum]]. See the resulting Category:Glaucium. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:22, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Thank you Peter, I haven't engaged with categories for quite some time so I appreciate the reminder and I'll be sure to be more diligent in regards to this in the future! Fritzmann (message me) 15:28, 1 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from 333Anthony333 (16:56, 2 October 2024)

Hello,

I would like to create a new Wikipedia page for a professor at the University of Maryland. This is completely unrelated to my Socialism project. The professor I'm looking into creating a Wikipedia page about is not my professor, nor do I have any personal or financial relationship with them. I was interested in creating a Wikipedia page for him after hearing him speak at a Conference and I decided to search for him on the web and found he had many notable links about him on the web,but he had no Wikipedia page. Being I'm a student at UMD, if I create a Wikipedia page for him, will this create a COI? As I'm new to Wikipedia, I want to stay away from any activity that will leave my account in Jeopardy.

Best regards,

Anthony --333Anthony333 (talk) 16:56, 2 October 2024 (UTC)

DCWC closing update

The 2024 Developing Countries WikiContest has come to a close! After a thrilling finish to the event with a slew of submissions on the final day, we have our winners. With 608 points,     Thebiguglyalien (submissions) comes in third with his series of Kiribati and Botswanan submissions;     BeanieFan11 (submissions) flies into second place at the last second with 771 points after a string of good articles about sportspersons; and after leading for much of contest's three months,     Generalissima (submissions) finishes with a whopping 798 points to take home the Gold Belt Buckle. Congratulations to our winners!

In addition to his spot in the top three,   BeanieFan11 (submissions) also wins the special awards for submitting under the most countries (44 countries) and for writing the most articles about women (15 Did you know? nominations)!   Magentic Manifestations (submissions), after making 16 submissions under the Indian flag—15 of them good articles—receives the awards for most submissions for a single country and most featured or good articles promoted. For their submission of one FAC review, five FLC reviews, and 20 GAN reviews, Simongraham (submissions) wins for most article reviews.

The results of the contest have far exceeded any expectations the coordinators had for it at the beginning: among the submissions to the event were 3 FAs, 10 FLs, 88 GAs, dozens of article reviews of every kind, and more Did you know? submissions than we can count! Regardless of your level of participation, every contestant can be proud to have contributed towards a major step in countering the systemic bias on Wikipedia. Every year, millions of readers and editors around the globe use Wikipedia to educate themselves and communicate with others about parts of the world that often receive less attention than they deserve. Thank you for participating with us in the contest and contributing to this effort. The DCWC will return next year and we look forward to seeing you contribute again! However, before that...

We need your feedback! Join the conversation on the talk page to discuss your reflections on the contest (even if you didn't participate!) and help us make it better.

If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or ask one of the coordinators: Ixtal (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). SmolPetra, what you did in that case was just add a link, instead of a reference. For more information see Wikipedia:Citing sources or feel free to ask follow-up questions! Fritzmann (message me) 01:09, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in a research

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,

WMF Research Team

Good topic nom

Hey, that's cool. I've not really looked into good topics and featured topics. In the Hypericum huber-morathii article, there is an error for one of your references (the type specimen on JSTOR), and also for that same ref, when I click on the doi link to go to the page to see it, it can't be found. Here's a copy and paste of the error on the article page:

Huber-Morath, Arthur (1948). "Holotype of Hypericum huber-morathii N. Robson [family GUTTIFERAE]". JSTOR 10.5555/al.ap.specimen.g00355120. {{cite web}}: Missing or empty |url= (help)

Elizabeth (Eewilson) (tag or ping me) (talk) 02:07, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

That's weird, it looks like there was link rot for the holotype page; plus, now JSTOR has no hosted images for the species where it used to have at least half a dozen... I think they reorganized their catalogue of plant specimens. I was able to find the page though and fixed the error! Fritzmann (message me) Fritzmann (message me) 02:14, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Kiddos 4ever (07:23, 24 October 2024)

how do i create a wikepedia page --Kiddos 4ever (talk) 07:23, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Kiddos 4ever, Help:Your first article has some guidance to get you started. What kind of article do you intend to write about? Fritzmann (message me) 20:52, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Miztan9 (10:05, 24 October 2024)

Hello I have inline citations on an article “woji”, yet wiki displays “ This article does not cite any sources.” How do I fix this? --Miztan9 (talk) 10:05, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

Miztan9, other editors have responded to your concerns at Talk:Woji. I agree with their assessment, and encourage you to edit at the wikipedia in your first language, where your knowledge and expertise would be better put to use. Fritzmann (message me) 20:56, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
I have done that already. My first language is English. You should understand there is a thin line between written and spoken English or languages. I only needed understanding on how Wikipedia works and not a lecture on linguistics or my proficiency in my first language. Issues have been addressed and some editors are lazy in researching unknown terms. For example not knowing the word stool in Africa can mean a throne or power in monarchy style rulership. But I’ve given them countless citations and more. I await their response sire. Miztan9 (talk) 10:15, 26 October 2024 (UTC)
Miztan9, I apologizing for assuming that your first language was not English. I will re-emphasize what the other editor on the talk page of the article said, which is that encyclopedic language and referencing are very important in all articles. If you need any help with those two aspects, please feel free to ask me any questions you have. Fritzmann (message me) 23:26, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from KiraWorks (19:01, 25 October 2024)

Hi! I recently edited 'Kiran Gems' page. The 'History' section has 3 links to outside articles appended right after the words they should be hyperlinked to, but in the references section. Am I wrong here? Shall I shift them below by linking or let them all be? Thank you. --KiraWorks (talk) 19:01, 25 October 2024 (UTC)

KiraWorks, I did some cleanup to fix those links and turn them into references. Your username makes me think you might have an affiliation with the company Kiran Gems, does that happen to be the case? Fritzmann (message me) 19:49, 25 October 2024 (UTC)
Hi Mentor, I'm not associated with Kiran Gems, the topic was suggested to me by Wikipedia, so I took it up like the previous ones. KiraWorks (talk) 10:16, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

Swanmore War Memorial

Hi Jacob, I would like to write a Wiki about the War Memorial in the village where I work, and those people that are remembered on it, initially for the Great War. As an ex Chief in the Royal Navy, I am sure that we will get along very well.

Yours, Aye

Gary 86.144.101.55 (talk) 12:39, 26 October 2024 (UTC)

Hello Gary, I would love to help you work on that. It will be easiest for us to communicate if you create an account, and then we can begin. I think there should be enough material to create an article on this topic. Fritzmann (message me) 23:13, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from Equestor (18:02, 27 October 2024)

Hi Fritzmann2002

I see that you’ve been assigned to help me as a new member of Wiki. Thank you for your help!

I’ve noticed two errors at the start of the section ‘Murder’ in the Wiki article ‘Onion Pie Murder’: Onion Pie Murder - Wikipedia

The original text is: “French murdered her husband by lacing his meal with 3d worth of arsenic in Horsebridge. [4] The arsenic had been bought by her husband in order to kill mice in their house, and he gave it to Sarah to put away in a safe place where their child or anyone else could not find it.”

This original text contains two errors:

1) The first sentence suggests that French murdered her husband in Horsebridge, whereas Horsebridge is where her husband bought the arsenic. This is clear from the cited source.

2) In the original text there is the blue link for ‘Horsebridge’ but this link redirects to Horsebridge in Hampshire, whereas the Horsebridge intended is Horsebridge near Hailsham, both in East Sussex. Again this is clear from the cited source.

I’ve done some rephrasing as follows:

“French murdered her husband by lacing his meal with 3d worth of arsenic. [4] The arsenic had been bought by her husband in Horsebridge, near Hailsham, in order to kill mice in their house. He gave it to Sarah to put away in a safe place where their child or anyone else could not find it.”

I’m stuck on the “Edit summary” because I do not know how to properly describe my correction of the two errors, and the rewording that I did. I see there are special ways to do this.

Many thanks for your guidance.

Kind regards Peter Bessell (Equestor) --Equestor (talk) 18:02, 27 October 2024 (UTC)

Equestor, thanks for reaching out! I think you should copy and paste the reasonings you gave on the article's talk page. Then, in your edit summary, you can just direct other editors to the talk page to see your full justification. If you have any more questions about editing the article please feel free to let me know. Fritzmann (message me) 23:24, 27 October 2024 (UTC)
Many thanks for your help. I will complete my edit following your advice. Equestor (talk) 07:49, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Question from MohamoedKhaledZ010 (02:27, 28 October 2024)

Hi Fritzmann 2002,

A notification says my article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nabeel_Qadeer has been linked to Wikidata - could you please guide me about what it implies and if I should be concerned about how it has been edited or referenced? Thanks --MohamoedKhaledZ010 (talk) 02:27, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

MohamoedKhaledZ010, no need to worry about that, it's just data integration that happens behind the scenes. I'm not super well-versed in wikidata but it has no bearing on the article here on wikipedia. Fritzmann (message me) 03:05, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
