JJMC89 bot NFCC removals suggestion
Hello. Your bot regularly removes images from election infoboxes as they are NFCC violations. However, this can lead to the infobox being distorted due to the lack of an image (see e.g. here). Would it be possible to set it up so that when the bot removes an image from inside {{Infobox election}}, it replaces it with File:3x4.svg, a blank file that fills out the space the image would have done. This will prevent the aforementioned distortions. Cheers, Number 57 19:12, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
- I've implemented that in the template instead. — JJMC89 02:36, 30 March 2023 (UTC)
- That is causing problems on infoboxes with one party listed. It would be far better if the bot could be amended instead. Cheers, Number 57 12:00, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
- I won't be doing that. If a template needs to behave a certain way, then they template should be coded appropriately. There are too many templates for a bot's code to have special handling. — JJMC89 23:19, 2 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello, JJMC89,
I usually look over this report nightly but it didn't get issued today. It's a very regularly issued report so I'm not sure what's up. There's another bot, HaleBot, I work with that didn't publish its regularly published report this hour as well so maybe there is a system problem. But I thought I'd let you know. Thanks! Liz Read! - Hi Liz. The bot is offline due to Toolforge maintenance. — JJMC89 02:18, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, I appreciate your prompt response and link to further information. Liz Read! Talk! 05:56, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
NFCC violations on user page
Hello there,
I was wanting to know as to why I'm getting NFCC violations for adding TV/radio station logos on my user page. I may be fully unaware as to why the logos keep getting removed and I just want to know why. I want them there in the first place, instead of getting rid of them. Any help here? TheRolyPoly (talk) 01:14, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
- (talk page watcher) Hi TheRolyPoly. Non-free content can only be used in the article namespace per non-free content use criteria #9; this mean it can't be used on your user page as explained here. You can, if you want, add links to non-free files as explained in WP:COLON, but you can't display them. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:27, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
JJMC89 bot removing wikilinks to images
Hi JJMC89, your bot sometimes removes wikilinks to images, such as from this FfD notice. Could you please look into this? Thanks. Ixfd64 (talk) 23:00, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Ixfd64: Yes, it failed to do what it needed to do. It likely got confused by the syntax in the photo montage. The image itself should have been removed, which I've done now. — JJMC89 23:32, 14 April 2023 (UTC)
Overly blunt?
Hi, JJMC89, how are you? You've slightly surprised me this morning, with this edit and another like it, and I was wondering if there's some technical reason for them that I'm not aware of? In general I try to use the most succinct mark-up that achieves the result, and normally link to Commons cats with {{commonscat}}
, since that seems to do the job. But if there's some additional cost – in server time or something? – in doing that, then I'll change to a wordier alternative. Anyway, you've reminded me that that page is only half-written, thank you! Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:54, 13 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Justlettersandnumbers: I'm well. How about you? The two are not equivalent.
{{nobots}}
prevents all bots from editing the page, while{{bots|deny=username}}
only prevents the specified bot from editing the page. Since only one bot has edited the page, preventing all bots from editing it is unnecessary. — JJMC89 23:26, 14 April 2023 (UTC)- Ah, that makes sense now – I only saw the changes to the commonscat link, and was perplexed. Bot shut down
Hi, I considered it worthwhile to put a temporary block on JJMC89 bot III because of an incorrect date entered at WP:CFDW which was affecting the edit summaries on very many pages. – Fayenatic London 15:01, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Fayenatic london It looks like the date is still wrong on WP:CFDW for those, as it's now 7 days in the future. Do you mean Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2013 April 27? Joseph2302 (talk) 15:10, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Oops, sorry Timrollpickering and JJMC89, my mistake. I then misread the date from that previous CFD. Now I understand: these are reversing out-of-process moves on 19 April 2023 by Materialscientist. Please carry on. – Fayenatic London 15:28, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
File:Esquire magazine April 1968.png
Hi JJMC89, your bot removed File:Esquire magazine April 1968.png from Carl Fischer (photographer) giving the reason No valid non-free use rationale for this page.
I am not the uploader. The image was first used 26 November 2011 on Muhammad Ali in media and popular culture where it has remained unqueried for 12 years.
As submitted by the uploader in the rationale, its use is the same on both articles; "to illustrate the publication of the issue of the magazine in question with the publication name either visible on the image itself or written in the image description above"
Please permit me to restore the image to Carl Fischer (photographer). Thank you. Jamesmcardle(talk) 11:13, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- The removal was correct since there is no valid non-free use rationale present for that page. Use on one page does not mean it is suitable to use on another. — JJMC89 21:15, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
About whitelist a page for WFCC use
Hi, i am editing World Baseball Classic article with some people and WBC has a new trophy that was updated for 2023, the photo is from a press release that was made to promote the update of the trophy and therafore will be used only for the articles about the trophy and the tournament, it was already listed as such on The Trophy Page
I had also made a qustion about it but so far i had no repliers, also the photo bot has edited the image to fit wiki standarts
Do you can fix this problem, it is possible that the bot can whitelist the photo when talking about the tournament?
PS: sorry for put this on archive it was acidental and not intentional Meganinja202 (talk) 01:46, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- There is no such allow list for the bot to ignore policy-violating uses of the image. I have tagged the file for deletion. — JJMC89 21:10, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Why you tagged for deletion? The only possible free photo is from a older version of the trophjy, the use of a such photo can be misleading for the users that are curious about the trophy looks beacuse it is from a older version of the trophy, the trophy went for various updates for 2023 as described on the trophy own page Meganinja202 (talk) 01:53, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- As is stated on the file page, a photo could be taken and freely licensed. — JJMC89 18:37, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed that JJMC89 bot stopped updating this news feed in August 2021. Any particular reason why? Cheers! BD2412 T 18:44, 19 April 2023 (UTC)
- I decided to stop maintaining that task since I would have needed to rewrite Misza13's old Python 2 code to make it work with Python 3 and newer library versions. The declining use made it seem like it wasn't worth my time. You're the first person to say anything about it stopping. — JJMC89 22:01, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Well, the idea is to keep the portal reasonably up to date with law-related news on Wikinews. I would be content to have the task run every month or every six weeks. BD2412 T 22:37, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Reducing the number of times that it runs does not decrease the amount of time that I would need to spend rewriting the code. — JJMC89 18:38, 22 April 2023 (UTC)

Question re JJMC89 bot and "Drafts moved from mainspace" tag
I was wondering if, when JJMC89bot tags a page as {{Drafts moved from mainspace}}, is there any way that it could automatically disable (if existing) or remove (if redlinked) any categories that the draft is in? Given how frequently editors move pages from mainspace to draftspace as an alternative to deletion now, the process of having to clean up WP:DRAFTNOCAT violations has become more time-consuming than it used to be because there are a lot more pages getting moved without the categories being dealt with at the same time and thus there are so many more categories to check each time Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories (2) updates -- so I just wanted to know if it would be possible for the bot to help out since it's already detecting and tagging the moved pages as it is. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 18:33, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- DannyS712 bot should already be doing this when the mover does not use a script like User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft. If DannyS712's bot is not catching all of them, I'd let them know. — JJMC89 18:42, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
Salinger unauthorized short stories
The image I loaded is used strictly to illustrate the cover art in the collection. As to non-free use, how can I reload it so as to use it as such? File:Complete Uncollected Short Stories by J. D. Salinger (1974) vol. 1.jpg CerroFerro (talk) 16:11, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- It looks like you have the wrong article listed in the non-free use rationale – the author's instead of the book's. — JJMC89 18:46, 22 April 2023 (UTC)
- Very well. I'll resubmit it as per the actual article. CerroFerro (talk) 15:44, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Playmaker Media renamed to Curio Pictures
Playmaker Media was renamed to Curio Pictures back in 2022 under Jo Porter and no one has ever renamed the article since. I hope that if you can rename it and create a category named Television series by Curio Pictures and fold the older name Television series by Playmaker Media must be redirected. 85.255.233.108 (talk) 13:38, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
- See WP:RM and WP:CFD for information about the process of moving articles and categories, respectively. — JJMC89 21:19, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
