" Replace redirected template (Template:Pageviews -> Template:Annual readership)"
editWhy? normally redirects aren't bypassed * Pppery * it has begun... 04:23, 6 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Pppery: I was going to put an extremely simple template together at the title of the redirect, so I retargeted the incoming links. Upon trying to write my extremely simple template I have discovered that I am probably separated from it by a few dozen hours of learning Lua. So it goes, I suppose. jp×g 05:06, 6 November 2022 (UTC)

Signpost pages are now categorised by status
editIt's actually really trivial because we already sort them, just needed to add something to put them into categories. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3ASignpost_draft&type=revision&diff=1120601155&oldid=1120432276 There. Change the category names to whatever you want. D'ye want any other statuses? It currently sorts them as either Category:Wikipedia Signpost articles not yet ready for copyediting, Category:Wikipedia Signpost articles ready for copyediting, or Category:Wikipedia Signpost articles that have been copyedited. I've filtered the first of those categories to only include - well, it's technical how I did it, but basically it checks for "Next issue" in the page name, which removes a bunch of sandbox articles, templates, and long-dead article drafts from old incarnations of the Newsroom.
I haven't made the category pages yet, as there's not much point until they're renamed how you want. MAKE SURE to include {{Possibly empty category}} in the category pages or expect them to be deleted.
Sometimes I forget that I'm one of the only Wikipedians old enough to remember how to do these things. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 21:18, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
- For the record, by the way, if something has a template that gets filled out to show status or to do something, it can probably be categorised by that status using similar techniques to this. Just need to put the desired category into the right "if" (or "yesno" in this case). Also useful for statistics. If, for example, you wanted to know if people were using the fullwidth=yes option, well, you could just add a temporary category (wouldn't even need to make the page for that category, really), give it a couple days to transclude to everything, get the numbers, and then delete the code putting it into the category Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Legal certainty draft
editI've copyedited it, standardised its page name (Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Next issue/Legal certainty) and added it to the list. We could probably put it in as "Opinion", but I'd say that's your call.
In other news, you might want to take a glance at the Essay I wrote, and see if you want it elsewhere (I'd have preferred to do that one as an interview, but, well - did you know I'm the only Wikicup winner never to have their win mentioned in the Signpost? Didn't want to miss this achievement too, and writing it is way easier than complaining about it until someone acts.
I saw some commentary on the Newsroom talk page that someone else has an essay they want to run. If you want to move it to another section, feel free. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.2% of all FPs. Currently celebrating his 600th FP! 04:14, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes
- At Wikidata, an interwiki link can now point to a redirect page if certain conditions are met. This new feature is called sitelinks to redirects. It is needed when one wiki uses one page to cover multiple concepts but another wiki uses more pages to cover the same concepts. Your feedback on the talkpage of the new proposed guideline is welcome. [2]
- The www.wikinews.org, www.wikiversity.org, and www.wikivoyage.org portal pages now use an automated update system. [3]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 November. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 November. It will be on all wikis from 17 November (calendar).
- There will be a new link to directly "Edit template data" on Template pages. [4]
Future changes
- Wikis where mobile DiscussionTools are enabled (these ones) will soon use full CSS styling to display any templates that are placed at the top of talk pages. To adapt these “talk page boxes” for narrow mobile devices you can use media queries, such as in this example. [5]
- Starting in January 2023, Community Tech will be running the Community Wishlist Survey (CWS) every two years. This means that in 2024, there will be no new proposals or voting.

Hope for RfA
editI hope that you will make your RfA (Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/JPxG) go live soon. It has almost been a month since your last edit to the RfA, and the RfA comments here have already been archived to Archive21. Well, good luck when the RfA gets transcluded! Are you so busy that you forgot to transclude the RfA and follow the red instructions at the RfA? GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 04:57, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

- Mathematical formulas shown in SVG image format will no longer have PNG fall-backs for browsers that don't support them. This is part of work to modernise the generation system. Showing only PNG versions was the default option until in February 2018. [8][9][10]
- On some wikis that use flagged revisions, a new checkbox will be added to Special:Contributions that enables you to see only the pending changes by a user. [11]
Future changes
- How media is structured in the parser's HTML output will change early next week at group1 wikis (but not Wikimedia Commons or Meta-Wiki). This change improves the accessibility of content, and makes it easier to write related CSS. You may need to update your site-CSS, or userscripts and gadgets. ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message
editHello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

- Those 33,000 edits have taught me that removing a post often causes far more drama than simply responding and shutting it down with a simple, factual riposte. Use care with indented templates
editIn Your edit of 02:19, 10 December 2022 (UTC) of Wikipedia:Village pump (policy), you introduced multiple instances of
:{{cot}} ... {{cob}}
causing missing end tags and stripped tags lint errors. When you have paired tags like {{cot}}
and {{cob}}
, neither template should be on a line starting with colon (:), asterisk (*) or number (#), to avoid lint errors. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 20:49, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Anomalocaris: Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea those templates would go wild from being indented... as an idle curiosity, what would happen if they were inside a table (or inside other {{cot}}s)? jp×g 20:58, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
The whole point of {{Cot}}
is to collapse paragraphs into one expandable horizontal bar, and you probably wouldn't want to do that in a table, even if it's possible. To my surprise, {{Cot}}
tags can be nested, as shown here:
A "Cot" with a nested "Cot" inside
| ||
---|---|---|
inside one cot
inside one cot after closing an inner cot |
Outside all "Cots"
Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:08, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
Contentious topics procedure adopted
editYou are receiving this message because you are subscribed to updates on the Arbitration Committee's discretionary sanctions review process.
The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:
The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.
The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.
This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.

Tech News
- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 9 January 2023.
Recent changes
- On a user's contributions page, you can filter it for edits with a tag like 'reverted'. Now, you can also filter for all edits that are not tagged like that. This was part of a Community Wishlist 2022 request. [18]
- A new function has been used for gadget developers to add content underneath the title on article pages. This is considered a stable API that should work across all skins. Documentation is available. [19]
- One of our test wikis is now being served from a new infrastructure powered by Kubernetes (read more). More Wikis will switch to this new infrastructure in early 2023. Please test and let us know of any issues. [20]
Problems
- Last week, all wikis had no edit access for 9 minutes. This was caused by a database problem. [21]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week or next week.
- The word "Reply" is very short in some languages, such as Arabic ("ردّ"). This makes the Discussion tools button on talk pages difficult to use. An arrow icon will be added to those languages. This will only be visible to editors who have the Beta Feature turned on. [22] [23]
Future changes
- Edits can be automatically "tagged" by the system software or the Edit filter configuration system. Those tags link to a help page about the tags. Soon they will also link to Recent Changes to let you see other edits tagged this way. This was a Community Wishlist 2022 request. [24]
