@GoingBatty: I've got no clue why the hell that page is showing up in the article categories, although figuring it out seems like a difficult task (it's a transclusion of all my userspace drafts and sandbice). If you can figure it out, you have my permission to go to whatever page is triggering it and fix that -- which article category are you talking about? It should be possible to use PETscan or something to figure out which other userspace pages I hajve that are in the category. jp×g 21:55, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

PetScan only shows User:JPxG/bigindex. However, Special:ExpandTemplates leads me to think that it's because User:JPxG/bigindex includes User:JPxG/Draft21, which redirects to Wu Dao. GoingBatty (talk) 22:16, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes

• English Wikipedia recently set up a gadget for dark mode. You can enable it there, or request help from an interface administrator to set it up on your wiki (instructions and screenshot).
• Category counts are sometimes wrong. They will now be completely recounted at the beginning of every month. [1]

Problems

• A code-change last week to fix a bug with Live Preview may have caused problems with some local gadgets and user-scripts. Any code with skin-specific behaviour for vector should be updated to also check for vector-2022. A code-snippet, global search, and example are available.

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 February. It will be on all wikis from 10 February (calendar).

I think there is a small bug with Oracle; it doesn't count the !vote of the nominator when determining percentage and number of votes. BilledMammal (talk) 19:16, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

@BilledMammal: I guess that's kind of a bug, but it kind of isn't -- every once in a while there are pro forma nominations, or AfDs where the nom changes their mind, so it would be pretty hard to keep track of the edge cases here. jp×g 22:42, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

@Julle: There are a few months where the scripts got messed up, usually due to formatting errors on the archive pages themselves (incorrect transclusions and the like). • In the AbuseFilter extension, the rmspecials() function has been updated so that it does not remove the "space" character. Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses of rmspecials() with rmwhitespace() wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. reFill

Hi JP. Good to meet you. Firstly, thanks for all that you do for Wikipedia! It would be great to have some help with reFill. Perhaps if I start with the background to my involvement. When I became an AfC reviewer I started to use reFill daily as a means to clean up the refs in a draft and quickly identify those which might meet WP:THREE and those which are unlikely to as being self-published, from non-RS etc. ReFill went through a period when it was getting stuck frequently, and attempts to contact the maintainer (the original author) went unanswered. I began to report these outages on Phabricator, and messaged the WMF cloud team on IRC, talking directly to engineers that could access the production environment, inspect logs and restart it. Eventually, the maintainer reappeared briefly (like, for a day), fixed the underlying issue and deployed it. At that time I was able to contact him and we agreed that I should have access to the prod environment. We didn't actually have any handover, and having followed the instructions for the numerous steps to get access to the toolforge environment and eventually in October the GitHub repo, the focus then switched to getting the dev stack installed. I found that most dependencies were to out of date versions and when I tried to use the current versions of those I got into a tangle of breaking changes and incompatibilities. I was getting error after error and increasingly frustrated. It was not helped that my technical background is Windows and .NET, not Linux, and while I like to keep my hand in, I've not been a professional developer since 2012. Initially I tried setting up a VM, then using the Windows Subsystem for Linux, and then User:TheresNoTime offered to help and she wrote these instructions for how to set up a dev environment on Windows. The real blocker to progress on reFill comes down to:

• Me not having a working dev/test environment
• When logged into Putty, it is evident that the production environment is a mess with numerous versions and it is unclear what is what
• Lack of a staging environment where anything deemed potentially ready for prod could be tested by multiple users

So while people could push their fixes to the repo, there's currently no way to test them and safely deploy them. Triaging the issues reported in GitHub (most of which are actually enhancement ideas rather than bug fixes) and doing the same on Phabricator and Talk:ReFill has not been the priority given the inability to do much about the issues. I can see you have Python and JS skills so you may be the perfect person I had hoped would come along. Do you also know Vue, Celery, and Docker by any luck? It would be great to work together on this, perhaps with you leading on the dev side and I can do more on the community side. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 10:25, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

@Curb Safe Charmer: I am a Lunix nerd (I've used it as my primary operating system since 2016 and have set up/run a variety of servers on it since). I've written some stuff in Python and JavaScript, and am currently in the process of figuring out some more front-end stuff (like Vue, React, etc) as well as some web development/deployment stuff (like Docker). I have no idea what Celery is (looks like some sort of task queue/load balancer thing). I'm about to go to bed tonight, but I am going to start trying to look through this stuff tomorrow. I think we should probably set up a page somewhere where we (and maybe other people, if any want to) can mess around and try to figure stuff out -- my talk page is going to get flooded with a bunch of random crap. Do you have any notes, diagrams, et cetera about the way the program is set up? When I write complicated software, I often have a .txt (or a piece of graph paper) with a bunch of boxes and lines on it and random stuff that helps me think about the way it's structured. jp×g 11:06, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

Sounds great. An interest in 'figuring out stuff' and the tenacity to keep going will be useful. When the user submits a request to expand the references in an article, either via the front end or through the API, those requests are queued in the backend as tasks in Celery.

So far, there's stuff at User:TheresNoTime/ReFill, User talk:TheresNoTime/ReFill and older stuff at User:Curb Safe Charmer/Refilldev in addition to the user manual and readme. No diagrams though! I suggest we continue at Wikipedia:Refill/technical discussion which I've created for the purpose if we want to keep things on-wiki. Curb Safe Charmer (talk) 17:09, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Recent changes

• Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [4]
• At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [5]
• You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup class=notpageimage. For example, [[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]. [6]
• There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.

• Community Wishlist Survey results have been published. The ranking of prioritized proposals is also available.

Future changes

• The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [7][8]
• Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [9]
• Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

Discretionary sanctions topic area changes

In a process that began last year with WP:DS2021, the Arbitration Committee is evaluating Discretionary Sanctions (DS) in order to improve it. A larger package of reforms is slated for sometime this year. From the work done so far, it became clear a number of areas may no longer need DS or that some DS areas may be overly broad.

The topics proposed for revocation are:

• Waldorf education
• Ancient Egyptian race controversy
• Scientology
• Landmark worldwide

The topics proposed for a rewording of what is covered under DS are:

Dishonest and malicious behaviour

How dare you first of all falsely accuse me of not explaining my edit, and then revert it again for an entirely spurious reason? Did you even read the material that I removed and that you restored? Partialitarian (talk) 20:55, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

@Partialitarian: The material was included in the article per consensus reached during a talk page discussion in 2020, so I think discussing it there would be better than continuing to blank the entire section. The information is verifiable, and it's not undue, as far as I can tell. jp×g 20:58, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

I am not sure what you are referring to. {{Uw-delete1}} (which was what I put on your talk page) says "recently removed content without adequately explaining why", which is not the same as providing no explanation. jp×g 21:34, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

This person just added unsupported data and prediction to British Asian article. [10]. Recent changes

• When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [12]
• Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [13][14]
• The user group oversight was renamed suppress. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.

Problems

• The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [15]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).

Future changes

• Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
• If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes: successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

An arbitration case regarding Skepticism and coordinated editing has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

• Rp2006 (talk · contribs) is warned against a battleground mentality and further incivility.
• Rp2006 is indefinitely topic banned from edits related to living people associated with or of interest to scientific skepticism, broadly construed. This topic ban may be appealed after six months have elapsed and every six months thereafter.
• A. C. Santacruz (talk · contribs) is reminded to remain collegial in editing and interacting with others.
• Roxy the dog (talk · contribs) is warned to remain collegial in editing and interacting with others.
• GSoW is advised that a presence on English Wikipedia, perhaps as its own WikiProject or as a task force of WikiProject Skepticism, will create more transparency and lessen some of the kinds of suspicion and conflict that preceded this case. It could also provide a place for the GSoW to get community feedback about its training which would increase its effectiveness.
• Editors are reminded that discretionary sanctions for biographies of living people have been authorized since 2014. Editors named in this decision shall be considered aware of these discretionary sanctions under awareness criterion 1.
