Helicobacter pylori

Keith D, on the Helicobactor Pylori page you inserted a "this section is empty." It is not clear to me as to which section you are referring. If you can tell me the section, I will try to correct this. Thanks. joflaher (talk) 18:47, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, the problem was created by this edit which incorrectly made a section heading out of some text. An IP editor fixed that problem in this edit but left in the {{empty section}} template that AWB inserted when I made my edit. The problem is fixed and the template can be removed. Trolleybuses in Mexborough and Swinton

Hi Keith, Sorry I deleted your {clear} from the Trolleybuses in Mexborough and Swinton article, but I just assumed I had accidentally copied it in. I am wondering what type of machine you are viewing it on to get just an A next to the route diagram. On my browser, the map only occupies about 40% of the width, and I get almost three paragraphs next to it. If I run my browser in full screen mode, I get part of the fourth paragraph as well. By my calculations, you must have a screen resolution of around 650 px wide, which is surely unusual in this day and age. Is there not some way to say {clear on a low resolution screen}, as the vast swathe of white space looks terrible on a normal monitor? I have moved the map down, but left the clear for the moment. I have also redrawn the map with nearly every terminus on a different row, so I can put all the labels down the right hand side. That cuts it down from about 490 px to 420 px, but I have not published it yet, as it is not quite so elegant. Bob1960evens (talk) 22:38, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I am viewing it on a laptop. Display resolution set to 1366 X 768, though unsure of the actual size as the browser zoom probably alters this. Keith D (talk) 23:48, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
Interesting. I have just tried running Wikipedia on my laptop, which has a resolution of 1280 x 800, and the map still only takes up about half the width of the article area, so plenty of room for the first two paragraphs to fit alongside. Bob1960evens (talk) 07:32, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
I suspect it might be unique to you, as User:YTRK edited the page this morning and removed the clear. Bob1960evens (talk) 12:12, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
May be you could put a {{no wrap}} round the first few of words after the diagram to display after diagram if the problem happens (probably need a hidden comment to say why present if done). On another matter the diagram need some explanation of the numbers/letters which appear on it. Keith D (talk) 12:44, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
There is a paragraph explaining that Rotherham used numbers for their routes, and Mexborough used letters, with an example showing why '9' and 'B' both terminated at Conisbrough Low. Do you think it needs more than that? Bob1960evens (talk) 14:33, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
Probably need something on/near the diagram to explain. I was confused as there appears to be no start point for the routes as I would have expected 2 ends for each route like route C. Keith D (talk) 21:08, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
I am guessing they all terminated in Rotherham town centre, but have not found anything that actually says so, yet. There is no easy way to stick text on a map, as far as I know, and nor is there a caption option, like there is on images, to allow you to stick descriptive text below the map. Bob1960evens (talk) 08:37, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
Update: I have found that the object that produces the numbers can be used to put longer text on, providing it is black on white, rather than white on black. I'll have a go. Bob1960evens (talk) 08:43, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick edit just now to this article that I have also contributed to. Do you think the article is getting to the point where it can be recommended for publication? O-Jay (talk) 16:51, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, a quick scan of the article shows that it needs more sources as there are still sections such as "Features" that are unreferenced. There are some minor layout problems in footer ordering per WP:ORDER but that is easy to fix. Keith D (talk) 17:00, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

CAD Software

Hello, I am a beginner wikipedist. My name is Mariusz, I'm from Poland. I often browse English-language Wikipedia because it is richer than Polish. I decided to edit some articles about CAD software. I'm interested in this. I have worked on many programs professionally. I edited, among others, CAD, ActCAD (transferred from Polish Wikipedia), IntelliCAD, AllyCAD. I've seen in history that you have tremendous experience. Please, join the discussion, review my articles or correct them. I saw you were editing articles in the IT industry. I am asking for your understanding. I need directions. Some wikipedists treat beginners as rubbish. Sometimes I am so annoyed that I would like to leave it. However, I think my knowledge may be useful. Then I think of my grandmother, who is 90 years old. She knew many medicinal plants and was able to use them. I've always wanted to write it down. But I've never had time. Then my grandmother had a stroke. All her knowledge, passed down from generation to generation, sputtered like a bubble. That's why I am asking for help. You wrote: Please do not bite the newcomers. I feel bitten and hunted like animals. Thank you if you take care of my articles.ZengaONE (talk) 22:54, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, looks like you have been followed and a user has sent the articles for deletion. You will need to provide some suitable sources that cover the subject in some depth and are independent of the subject, such as books or magazines that report on the subject. You can list these on the deletion discussion to support your keep vote. Others can then evaluate them before making their vote.
Do not be to disheartened by this as you often have to have a thick skin to keep going. If you make a good case on the deletion discussion and improve the articles they will be kept. Keith D (talk) 23:13, 13 May 2020 (UTC)

Tulisa

Hello, can you please fully protect Tulisa's article as Blueberry72 is vandalising the page by removing the sourced genres? Barnebykerry (talk) 18:07, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

I could but you would need to prove that this a valid action to take. You appear to be in an edit war over a suspected sockpuppet investigation at the moment and so it would not be appropriate to act on this until that investigation concludes. Keith D (talk) 18:16, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
They keep removing R&B and other sourced genres in favour for their preferred genre of pop and saying that the rest of the sources do not mention the genre, when they do. Barnebykerry (talk) 18:24, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

Rayment

Apparently the author of the website to which the {{Rayment}} and the other related tempates link has died (See Talk:Viscount Baltinglass#Leigh Rayment - reference). Whether that is true or not, I know not. However what is true is that the website no longer exists. So I changed the templates to point to a recent archived version of the template see (Template talk:Rayment#Website domain expired).

There has been a long running dispute over whether the website is Wikipedia reliable. It is generally agreed that it is accurate, but in most cases the website does not cite it sources and even when it does it only give what Wikipdia editors describe as general references. Therefor all of the templates have the code to automatically add:

Leigh Rayment's Peerage Pages [self-published source] [better source needed] Or similar

In some of the templates this has been turned off ("commented out")—due to the latest argument over whether the cite is or is not Wikipedia reliable. As the people involved are in the most experienced editors this is a slow disagreement that has been rumbling on for years, and is discussed about once every five years or so.

However if the template is placed in the sections "Further reading" or "External links" then whether or not it is a reliable source is not relevant, so the external links flag is available to turn off the warning when they are activated by default.

The external links flag is tested for wether it is set (exists) or is not set. So what is used as the value to set it does not matter. Some people use "1" because that is what is used in programming, and is my preferred choice, however other are more comfortable with "y" as in ("yes" and "no"). Clearly "o" (oh) would be confusing because: does it mean "on" or "off" or "0" as in "0" and "1"?

I am not very active on Wikipedia at the moment, however an editor had challenged the applicability of Category:Wikipedia articles incorporating an LRPP template as an external link (diff) so a ran an AWB script to check if it should be empty. As you can see there were 130 pages (about 8% of the total) where the template is in the "External links" or "Further reading" sections. I am now running the same script over the other Rayment templates and adding the parameter where appropriate.

BTW now that the website is dead, I suspect that over time the addition of new references using Rayment will diminish, and those in the articles will be gradually replaced with more Wikipedia reliable sources.

-- PBS (talk) 08:20, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

As for the specific example you queried, yes it was a duplicate and yes that was a mistake. If I had noticed it I would have aborted that edit, however two instances it makes no difference to the presentation. I could make the AWB script look for duplicates and skip them, but there are so few of them, that coding it would be (in my judgment) more trouble that it is worth given how few cases link that exist. -- PBS (talk) 08:35, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanation of the situation. Keith D (talk) 13:43, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Help required

Nawab Afridi (talk) 15:46, 17 May 2020 (UTC) Hello Keith D, I am a beginner and I need your guidance how to add links to the aritcle List of Pakistani Peace Laureates. Please I need your guidance.

Hello, unsure what type of links you require. If you mean internal links then just enclose the text you want as a link in square brackets as per [[Name of other article]]. If the article title is not exactly what you want then you can pipe the link [[Name of other article|text to show]]. On the other hand if you mean a reference or external link that is more complicated and depends on how you are editing, either using wikitext or visual editor. Keith D (talk) 15:54, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Nawab Afridi (talk) 18:15, 17 May 2020 (UTC) Thank you very much for the guidance dear Keith D. I have added related links in List of Pakistani Peace Laureates as desired by you. Once again thanks.

Date of publication

Virginia v. John Brown Perhaps you know a better way to handle it, but saying the article cited appeared in the Independent on the 9th is incorrect. That's the date of the reprint. With the materials I have ready access to I can't find the original. deisenbe (talk) 17:02, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

The date on the linked URL is the 9th so it should show that date as that is the source that was consulted. If it was published elsewhere and that was the one you consulted then you need to link to that item not to the article dated the 9th. The cite templates do not allow you to give an approximate date just for a year and cause a cite error. Keith D (talk) 17:10, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Extended confirmed user

Sir why I have not been granted extended confirmed user status even after 500 edits and 30 day tenure? Editor wikip6 (talk) 05:30, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, my guess is that it is on the verge of the 30 day tenure as the account was created on 23 April 2020 at 11:06. Unsure if it is a daily job that changes things over or if it happens automatically. I would check tomorrow to see if the setting is done by a job that is run at a specific time. Keith D (talk) 10:50, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
It is in the list today, so must be an overnight job that sets up the access then it has past the 30 days. Keith D (talk) 10:38, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

List of Pakistani Peace Laureates

Nawab Afridi (talk) 17:08, 25 May 2020 (UTC) Being a moderator, you always checked my page List of Pakistani Peace Laureates and fixed the errors every time for which I was always thankful to you for your support and cooperation but today I just checked my page and have found some other moderator removing the descriptions and ruining my entire page. All my efforts and struggle have been ruined.

Hello I was just correcting errors not checking content. The other person has looked at the content added and determined that some of the additions are copyright which are not allowed to remain. If you are adding material then it should not be copied directly from another source but must be written in your own words. Keith D (talk) 17:14, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

PMC Warning on Christine Holgate's article

Dear @Keith D:,

I received your warning about the quality of the sources used within en:Christine Holgate article. Would you mind clarifying the problem I am facing and suggesting how to fix that problem? Thank you for noticing me that I did something wrong and needed further improvement. I am looking forward to receiving your response! Thank you! --Quinndo (talk) 11:29, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, the problem with the article was that it appeared in the hidden maintenance category Category:CS1 maint: PMC format. This causes a problem with the meta-data for the article, not the display as the cite templates hide the problem. This occurs when one or more of the cite templates have |pmc=PMC123456 where the "PMC" in the parameter value is redundant and needs removing. The details on Category:CS1 maint: PMC format explain how to make the messages visible against the incorrect cite or you can set your preferences - under the Preferences tab set "Show hidden categories" - to see the hidden categories. Keith D (talk) 11:48, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Thankyou for the edit! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mmaro17 (talkcontribs) 08:26, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Your Yo-Yo Ma edit

Your change of Yo-Yo Ma’s biography from “born to Chinese parents” to “”born to Taiwanese parents” cannot be supported by evidence. Ma’s father, Hiao-Tsiun Ma, was born in Zhejiang in then Republic of China, now People’s Republic of China. In 1947, Hiao-Tsiun Ma travelled from China to France where Yo-Yo Ma was born. The fact that Hiao-Tsiun Ma was a citizen of Republic of China which retreated to Taiwan in 1949 doesn’t make him a “Taiwanese” in a modern sense. Ma’s mother was born in Hong Kong, which also doesn’t support your change.

“Taiwanese” is a highly loaded word in contemporary identity politics, and you shall apply it with care and caution. Your personal political orientation shall not decide historical facts.

If you can produce evidence that either Yo-Yo Ma or his father has claimed to be of Taiwanese ancestry, please produce sources.

I hope you will make proper changes on your own.

Please also cross reference Yo-Yo Ma’s Wikipedia entries in other languages.

Thanks.

A concerned Wikipedia user from Toronto, Canada Untimelythoughts (talk) 13:56, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Hello, it was not a political decision in any way it was just that I considered an IP was changing things that I saw as vandalism without investigating the situation further as there appears to be no online reference in the article that supports either one or the other. As it is contentious I would have expected a reference in the article that supports the correct position. May be it is in reference 6 though that is quite a distance from the text in question, but I have no access to that to judge which is correct. Keith D (talk) 18:06, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Starbotton Mike Close item

What type of reference would you like to support the Mike Close addition?

I did try to add a link to youtube but this did not work. Here's Mike winning a championship race in 1986 for proof. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtcwN7XfW44

Also, Mike was F1 World champion in 1977 http://f1stockcars.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Mike-Close-199.jpg

I'd like the addition to be restored since he designed and built cars for other drivers as well as being an accomplished driver himself. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:6415:C800:7C77:6A9D:F655:D707 (talk) 18:47, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello, you would need to create an article for him before adding him to a place article like Starbotton. You would also have to supply a reference on the Starbotton article that mentions him in relation to Starbotton from a reliable source, such as a newspaper article or web site, such as the BBC. Keith D (talk) 19:17, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. It's unlikely that I'm going to find a reference to Mike being from Starbotton on the BBC. It's possible that he might appear in an old stock car meeting programme but I'm unlikely to find an exact reference. It's common knowledge within the stock car community that Mike is/was from Starbotton; check out this video description for someone else who knows where Mike was from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNal_y3YXMI — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:6415:C800:7C77:6A9D:F655:D707 (talk) 19:35, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Article undeletion

Hi Keith:

I'm Nahshon Anderson an artist, writer and African American Transgender. In March, my Wikipedia article was nominated for deletion. In April, it was deleted. Since then, I have received two grants from national arts organizations. Though the grants have not been mentioned in the press (as of yet), I can provide you proof via email. Will you please consider reviewing them to restore my Wikipedia article or are you the wrong person to ask?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Nahshon_Dion_Anderson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shootingrange78 (talkcontribs) 21:55, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello, as the article was deleted via a deletion discussion then the right forum for requesting an undelete would be Wikipedia:Deletion review. You can present the new information that you have for the reviewers to consider under point 3 "if significant new information has come to light since a deletion that would justify recreating the deleted page". As the press information has not been published yet you may be best to wait until it is published before taking that course. The other way may be to contact the deletion closer indicating there is new information and requesting an undelete into draft space so that you can work on the article to include the new information before requesting recreation in main space. Hope this helps. Keith D (talk) 22:34, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

Feedback

What's the feedback about Draft:Gordon Tredgold? If it is okay, how can I submit it? I need your help sir.

Another one is that Draft:Tyler L. Adams has been subjected to numerous correction, I make the final edition four days ago, but up to now nothing has been done on the corrected Draft. Please can you help me to give me feedback about it? Abbas Kwarbai (talk) 05:51, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello, you need to submit the article to articles for creation, just add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page to submit it for consideration. The second one appears not to have been submitted again in this way and is just waiting for you to submit, nothing will happen to it until you submit it, apart from getting deleted as a neglected draft at some point in time.
A suggestion before submitting you need to go through and tidy-up any red error messages in the references section, also, apart from the initial usage, you need to refer to the subject of the article by their surname rather than Christian name. It may be worth reading through and fixing any grammatical/layout errors before submission though if English is not your first language you may not spot these easily and the reviewer may sort these out before accepting. Request for action

I posted a discussion about 1292simon at WP:ANI but no action was taken against him while he was involved in removing content at BMW articles for no reason and the discussion was archived. Espcially at the BMW 5 Series (F10), BMW 5 Series (G30), BMW 3 Series (E36) and BMW 3 Series (E46) articles. As seen on Talk:BMW 5 Series (F10), this user is trying to force his preferred changes to these articles without even attempting to look into the matter. I request you to look into the matter. Thank you. U1 quattro TALK 18:41, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

I have taken a quick look at it appears that there is definitely some edit warring going on here over a long period of time. I would suggest that you re-raise it at wp:ANI giving links to previous discussions that have been held about this as the user appears about 30 times in various ANI discussions, but at a quick glance could not pin point which one you refer to where no action was taken. Keith D (talk) 19:10, 26 June 2020 (UTC)
I was talking in a general sense about BMW articles. This user edits a series of those introducing his preferable changes while not even seeking consensus with others. U1 quattro TALK 01:56, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
You could set up a request for comment on the main BMW page showing the options available, and get input from other editors on the matter. This should enable you to get some indication of the way that should be used on these pages. You can then link to this from each of the individual affected articles.
